A pre-Christmas scribble rounds-up the latest from around the Premier League camps, with considerations for owners of the Everton back four, the Baggies Brunt, Liverpool’s big Greek and a disgruntled Chris Samba…

Reports suggest that Everton have lost the significant influence of Phil Jagielka over the Christmas period. The centre-back limped off with a thigh injury in the win over City on Monday night and follow-ups have stated that he’ll be out, possibly until the end of January. With John Heitinga also struggling with a knee injury that has kept him out of the last three, David Moyes now faces fielding a makeshift centre-back pairing over the busy holiday programme. Tony Hibbert may come in alongside Sylvain Distin, with skipper Phil Neville also an option.

Either way, for Fantasy Managers this is bad news – not just for Jagielka owners but also for those holding the talents of Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman. Everton host Birmingham at Goodison on Boxing Day and follow that with trips to struggling West Ham and the inconsistent Stoke. Clean sheets may be off the agenda with Jagielka sidelined, so Baines and Coleman may have to go on producing attacking returns to reward investment.

Roberto Di Matteo received a boost earlier this week with news that striker Peter Odemwingie will be fit to return from a knee injury to make the trip to Bolton. The Nigerian will be a starter in an expected 4-5-1 at the Reebok and comes back onto the Fantasy radar as a result. However, there was less encouraging news on Chris Brunt. The Irishman, so influential for the Baggies this term, is still struggling with ongoing groin problems and has failed to train so far this week. While he will be expected to make the Bolton game, West Brom have made it clear that he will need to be nursed through the hectic Christmas programme. Di Matteo had this to say on Brunt, with clear indication that he will need to juggle his resources…

“Brunt didn’t train yesterday….He still has problems with his groin. He’s been struggling with it for a while. Over Christmas we don’t look too far ahead. We will go into the next game with the best available team and a team that we think can win. Then we will see what happens in that game in terms of how we come through, but the fact that we play again 48 hours later is going to have an impact on selection.â€

Brunt owners need to be wary – it looks highly likely that he’ll need a rest between Gameweeks 19 and 21 given the fact that he’s clearly struggling to recover and train in between matches.

Roy Hodgson has announced that both Steven Gerrard and Dan Agger are fit to be in contention for the trip to Blackpool on Boxing Day, should the game go ahead. Gerrard’s return is a welcome one for Fantasy Managers; it not only gives us another midfield heavyweight to consider, it could also help to ignite Fernando Torres as a potential factor in the Fantasy season.

Just how Hodgson includes Gerrard is unclear. There is a suggestion that he will break up the blossoming Lucas/Raul Meireles partnership in midfield, although he could also throw Gerrard in behind Torres and drop David Nogog to the bench. That would seem a more likely scenario away from home…

“It won’t be a headache to put Steven back in but it will require me to make a decision. We’ve got many more players fit now which is fantastic because going into this stage of the season with just two injured players is an incredible tribute to the work our sports science people, the physios and the doctors have done.â€

Agger’s return is less welcome in Fantasy terms. The Dane’s availability will cloud the issue within a Liverpool back four that has a kind run of opponents ahead of them. Just as Sotirios Kygiakos appeared to be offering the potential of defensive and attacking returns, the Greek is now far from assured of his starting role over the coming matches. Agger seems unlikely to be thrown straight in at Blackpool but, given the turnaround of matches, he will surely be a factor over Liverpool’s Christmas programme. Paul Konchesky now looks the safer bet – although he too is under threat from Fabio Aurelio if Hodgson decides he needs to rest legs.

Chris Samba’s chances of starting the Ewood encounter with Stoke on Boxing Day remain in doubt. The Rovers skipper is not only carrying an ankle knock sustained in the 1-1 draw with West Ham, he is also involved in an off-field dispute with the club over the sacking of Sam Allardyce. Samba spoke out this week on the departure of Big Sam, amidst the suggestion that he will be slapping in a transfer request…

“If this is the way the club’s going to be run from now on, I don’t want to be part of it and I want to leave. As captain it’s very difficult to say this but I’ve thought long and hard about it. Nobody in football understands the decision to sack Sam.”

Samba’s stance will have taken the shine off for Steve Kean who was yesterday confirmed as Rovers boss for the rest of the season. Kean’s first task will surely be to address the issue with his skipper ahead of the weekend. If fit and with Phil Jones sidelined, you would expect Samba to start, but given his outburst against new owners Venkys, who know what pressures Kean will be under when it comes to naming his side against Stoke. We may well see Gael Givet alongside Ryan Nelsen, with Martin Olsson drafted in at left-back.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If Samba is allowed to leave, the Chickenshiters and Kean will lose what little credibility they have. He will stay.

    Krul / Foster
    Vidic / A.Cole / Coleman / Kolarov / Konchescky
    Nani / YaYa / MGP / Jarvis / Bale
    Drogs / Carroll / Bent

I'd like another heavy hitter in MF, VdV? At the risk of downgrading one of your (very strong) defenders.

S'pose, Vidic was only to be a temp purchase anyway,
could do Vidic to Rafael and Jarvis to VDV/Nasri.
Is Nasri still the same beast with Fabs back?

Since the main Christmas celebrations starts on Christmas Eve in Sweden it's usually a pretty good day for last minute shopping if you know what to buy. Stores are pretty much empty. On the other hand I'm pretty happy that I don't have to go to any stores today.

I was rather miffed yesterday though when I went to two separate Systembolaget stores (Systembolaget = swedish alcohol monopoly) only to find that almost all the good brands of julöl (Christmas beer) was out! Luckily there were four bottles of norwegian Nögne in the last store so I'll manage with that.

Otherwise I'm cooking some ham, spareribs, "brown cabbage" and making some lamb sausages today. The pickled herring, gravlax, cheese cake (swedish kind) and the other stuff that I'm supposed to make is already finished.
There you go, a short essay on my Christmas preparations for you while you wait for some more FPL related news.

Merry Christmas and if anybody have any advice on how to handle the Samba situation it would be much appreciated.

I guess you have a lot of differentials...

VdV is a points machine so I would at getting him in (even if your opponents do to, he's just that good at the moment).

Try get Gordon next week as your GK, and possibly look at Odwingie/Welbeck over Bent to free up cash to make mid transfers.

This is my 1st season in FPL but am I missing something? Liverpool have only won 1 of the last 5 away games and only kept 1 clean sheet. OK so "it's only Blackpool" but they've scored 11 in the last 5 home games?

Their cleanie record stands up well in comparison to most teams in recent weeks, and they've got a few "easy" home games coming up in which Johnson and Kyrg are well placed to get something at the other end.

I agree but clean sheets are only happening at home. Don't get me wrong, I've got Reina and Kyrgiakos myself but I'm not convinced that the problems away from home have been fixed yet. Understand the attacking potential but I think Liverpool are more likely to concede than Kyrgiakos is to score.............now i've said that he'll get a hat trick if i bench him grrr

i'm benching kyrgiakos even though he may score two headers, that's because i expect liverpool to concede and i'd rather bank on my defenders clean sheet potenial rather than their goal/assist potential, it's more predictable and less random with a measure of control.

i'll be playing greek in the home games certainly.

Happy with my squad this week. My only concern is the Blackpool vs Liverpool clash of the ‘pools game, the Met Office weather site (most accurate weather site on the web, by the way http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/we.....ther.html) does not forecast anything of concern yet the frozen pitch debacle remains an issue. Has anyone heard any news regarding the blackpool pitch? The major websites don’t have anything conclusive. Do blackpool’s groundsmen play fantasy football and are a member of this site? I wish!

    Fabianski, al-habsi
    Konchesky, Bardsley, Salgado, Kolarov, Foley
    Barton, Malouda, Nasri, VDV, Nani
    Carroll, Torres, Tevez.

I was going to do Malouda>Cahill and Barton>Yaya.
However, Cahill will obviously be going away, so it seems silly to waste a transfer on getting him in.

Dont understand all this Kolarov love. Most of the time people on here are highly critical of players like Modric Arteta etc who are great but dont score any points. He does take loads of shots on but has scored naff all! Essien often has the most shots for Chelski but no one suggests getting him in. Think this is just another Bosselli special imo.

I don't think it's a fair comparison in the case of Modric. Modric rarely gets in poisiotn to score or assist, Kolarov does plus he's got cleanie potential.

But he is a defender playing in one of the better defensive sides. In theory he'll pick up plenty of clean sheet points and as he is on corners and free kicks as well as having a licence to roam forward, he has potential for more.

A little selective there. One of those games he got sent off (unlikely to happen every week) and if you'd picked 5 games back then you'd have included a clean sheet.

And Toure has returned 0.75 ppg for his last 4. Bottom line is that Man City will get more clean sheets than most other teams and Kolarov will benefit from that as well as a good chance that attacking returns will start flowing. This game is more about what will happen next gameweek than last gameweek. We can use the past to predict the future but we need to look at more than just raw figures for goals, points and assists.

Yes, because City are on a bad run, Toure isn't scoring any better, He is secure of his place, and as soon as Man City learn how to keep a cleanie again, he will be getting 6 points a game, and he is only 5.7, with possible attacking returns. On your wildcard, make sure you do Toure -> Kolarov, whats the point of having Toure when you have a cheaper, more attacking alternative.

Watched the game on Monday and thought Kolarov was shite Never took on his man gave the ball away and most of his shots were way off target Trying to get some debate going as to whether he really is a good FF prospect and simply pointing out that he seems to be a bit of a band wagon who hasnt actually produced anything yet.

"most of his shots were way off target"

Kolarov's shooting from the Everton game. He had 6 shots, excellent for a defender. 3 blocked, 1 on target and 2 off target. I remember those 2, one was a freekick that just missed and the other was a low drive that also just went wide. None of his shots were way off target.

If anyone fancies a little Christmas competition I've set up a 3 gameweek league over on Ubecha. It starts on Boxing Day and runs to the New Years games. £10 entry, no wildcards. May the best team win...

Yeah natch. One of the best midfielders to have imo. VDV, Nani, Nasri, Cahill (til Asian Cup) + Brunt or Adam or Nzog or Yaya to make up the numbers. Even when Fabs has been fit he has linked up well and scored goals and FF points.

Sorry for the repost but really need some opinions.Who's the better buy?Rafael or Kolarov???I'm thinking of doing Greek->Rafael and Adam->VdV(both free).Team is as follows:

        Foster,Krul,
        Greek,Samba,Coleman,Jara,D.Collins,
        Nani,Nasri,Cahill,Barton,Adam,
        Drog,Tevez,Elmander.(3.4 in bank)

Sound plan? Also does anyone know if VdV is going up tonight??If I do those two transfers,I am left with 0.0 in the bank,so can't afford anyone going up or dropping in price. If he is rising tonight,I might have to risk doing an early transfer.

I am looking to get both in, this week Rafael is the better option, so next week, or in the near future, get rid of Samba and bring in Kolarov.

It's impossible to know for sure because the price mechanisms are not publicly known, but generally if his ownership has gone up by 0.2-0.3% then he's in danger of getting more expensive.

It's all part of the game - you have to either get in early or wait it out and take the risk his price goes up.

whats wrong with that? do you think in some weird way if you select players they have a higher chance of producing or by not choosing them they won't do anything?

They are unlikely to both have good GWs though are they. He's obviously gambling on Citeh keeping out Newcastle and trying to optimise his points for this week. In this case i don't actually agree but it's hardly ideal to have your players playing against each other.

if player carrol is likely to score more points then ferguson he should be chosen based on that.

if hart has a better chance of keeping a clean sheet than krul he should also be chosen.

how does it help to play against the odds?

point is that it doesnt so it bascially throws out the dont select players who are playing each other thing.

if you do that you will have many gameweeks where you either get a very high score or very low score and overall based on odds you're likely not to do well.

"if you do that you will have many gameweeks where you either get a very high score or very low score"

Spot on. But isn't that part of the skill of this game? Trying to analyse how the matches will unfold and then gain an advantage by (for example) benching Carroll when most others will be playing him? Like i said above i don't agree in this case and i will be playing Carroll.
