Exceeding most if not all pre-season projections, Sunderland’s defence will end 2010 with 9 clean sheets to their name, ranking them up there with Chelsea and Man City.

It is no surprise given that record, that three of the top six defenders for “Value (Season)”* are Sunderland players, Ahmed Elmomahady (14.2), Nedum Onuoha (13.8), and Phil Bardsley (13.1). Owning a Black Cats defender has become an economical, if not necessary, way to pursue the elusive defensive returns, with roughly 30% of the FPL teams currently owning one of these three defenders.

Onuoha has proved a popular selection, despite being the most expensive option in Steve Bruce’s back four, but a recent hamstring injury has de-railed his bandwagon. Elmomahady meanwhile, is less expensive at 4.8 but lost his role on the right of midfield, only to be recently reinstalled at right-back following injuries. He’s a far less secure and attractive option in that role. Which leaves Phil Bardsley, the least expensive of the options at 4.5 and a player who has taken his opportunity this season to cement a left-back role and emerge a prime Fantasy target as the Sunderland fixture list continues to fall favourably.

A warm story for the holidays, Bardsley was benched at the end of last season and then only had 1 appearance for 45 minutes in the first five games of this season. But a pre-season stint in a boxing gym is credited with improvements to his fitness and primed him to seize the opportunity presented by Kieran Richardson’s early season hamstring injury. The result is that he has started every game since Gamewek 6, being subbed on only one occasion, and is enjoying one of his best seasons.

In reality, Bardsley should be viewed as a reliable and economical purchase and one of the Fantasy surprises of the season. Tempered expectations are warranted, but our Members can see for themselves how Bardsley’s OPTA stats offer some promise of offensive returns, confirming that he has had a high level of involvement in terms of touches of the ball and key passes.

Onuoha’s absence may present some short-term options and/or create some defensive frailties, but with the fixtures largely showing different shades of blue (BLA, avl, NEW, blp, CHE, stk), owning a Sunderland defender or goalkeeper Craig Gordon, has to be given very serious consideration, with a strong case being made for selecting Bardsley for the Gameweek’s ahead.

[*] A handy tool for determining how to spread one’s funds between players and positions, “Value (Season)” is calculated by dividing the total number of points that a player has scored by the player’s current price.

Do you have any money left or are you all spent up?

Personally I'd say a Elmander for Tevez swap would be best, otherwise it seems all good. Possible ones to downgrade are Evra to Rafael or Bale to Adam to fund such a way. Otherwise your team look pretty grand.

Have to agree with you that it is wonderful to see fellow anti social people spending time away from the crowds.

All very true, which could cause some pain this week but by next they should all be back and fighting fit.

It's just that your attack look slightly weak compared to the rest of your team. Adam makes sense due to the double gw so if that makes the money up then it's the best way forward.

I suppose there's only one way to go then. People seem to be murmuring that Chelsea have turned a corner and they're going to be golden once again so it could be a totally inspired choice and fool be me. It's just I am a whore when it comes to consistency and with my recent descent into madness with getting Torres in I'm sticking to the mantra of consistency.

not much I'm afraid, he did say that macheda, fletcher and the twins (fabio and rafael) were all at the Hyatt (and so presumably in the team/squad), which may mean that berbs is rested. All guesswork at the moment I am afraid.

Will let you know if there's any further developments in the morning but don't think I am going to hear anything further tonight, as his last text message was incredibly incoherent!

I would like to think that we all help each other out as much as possible as we all have our respective leagues to win...so more than happy to share any info I get...maybe the morning papers will also be able to help (I have asked my mate to let me know who, if anyone, got horrendously pissed) - may influence SAF's 'rotation' policy...

got lost on the last page..

    My team is..

    Foster (Jussi)

    Kolarov, Krygiakos, Bardsley, Foley (Carr)
    Nani, Nasri, VDV, MGP (Barton)
    Drogba, Tevez (Carroll)

Foley has come on for Carroll at the moment..

Concerned about Big Greek and Agger situation and Liverpool’s ordinary performance against Wolves. Considering Rafael or Skrtel for him.. Not sure which way to go. Rafa has potential rotation issues but looks in strong form where as Skrtel is secure but Liverpool struggling for cleansheets and scoring..

Any other thoughts guys?? I’m stumped on this one..

    Foster (Krul)
    Kolarov Vidic Krygiakos (Salcido, Simpson)
    Fabregas Nasri Nani (Adam)
    Tevez Elmander Carroll
0.5m in bank - no free trades left.

With Nani, Carroll, Tevez all possible/probable outs and rotation risks I think I will take a 4 point hit before Lockout to try and strengthen my team and give myself a chance of fielding an XI this GW.

That doesn't mean too much though, position can be acquired through luck as much as from skill.

The only reason I would not play a Liverpool defender is that if Wolves were slightly more efficient infront of net they could have had a few past Liverpool, and Bolton are slightly better infront of goal. Sunderland have been consistantly strong this season and you can always hope on attacking returns from Coleman. My logic atleast.

If there's a wildcard coming up for you, it's a decent enough punt. Look at the Team News section to see what his chances of starting are.

If you'll have to get him out using a manual transfer, then I'd forget about it.

I have to agree. I see Rooney as going through a transition from a out and out striker to more of an advanced midfield place where he will boss the play. Rooney seems to be improving once more and is by no means a destroyed player even if he isn't worth having as a fantasy prospect anymore.

I've just taken Torres out so I'm in no doubt he'll teach me a lesson and find amazing form against Bolton and you're most probably right about Rooney, the time you take him out will be the time he gets played in 4-5-1 and destroys an opponent.

Doesn't it always seem the way.

I'd give Tevez the armband with form for the vice captain so it goes to Berbs if he doesn't play.

But Malouda against a weak Villa isn't an overly bad option either.
