Exceeding most if not all pre-season projections, Sunderland’s defence will end 2010 with 9 clean sheets to their name, ranking them up there with Chelsea and Man City.

It is no surprise given that record, that three of the top six defenders for “Value (Season)”* are Sunderland players, Ahmed Elmomahady (14.2), Nedum Onuoha (13.8), and Phil Bardsley (13.1). Owning a Black Cats defender has become an economical, if not necessary, way to pursue the elusive defensive returns, with roughly 30% of the FPL teams currently owning one of these three defenders.

Onuoha has proved a popular selection, despite being the most expensive option in Steve Bruce’s back four, but a recent hamstring injury has de-railed his bandwagon. Elmomahady meanwhile, is less expensive at 4.8 but lost his role on the right of midfield, only to be recently reinstalled at right-back following injuries. He’s a far less secure and attractive option in that role. Which leaves Phil Bardsley, the least expensive of the options at 4.5 and a player who has taken his opportunity this season to cement a left-back role and emerge a prime Fantasy target as the Sunderland fixture list continues to fall favourably.

A warm story for the holidays, Bardsley was benched at the end of last season and then only had 1 appearance for 45 minutes in the first five games of this season. But a pre-season stint in a boxing gym is credited with improvements to his fitness and primed him to seize the opportunity presented by Kieran Richardson’s early season hamstring injury. The result is that he has started every game since Gamewek 6, being subbed on only one occasion, and is enjoying one of his best seasons.

In reality, Bardsley should be viewed as a reliable and economical purchase and one of the Fantasy surprises of the season. Tempered expectations are warranted, but our Members can see for themselves how Bardsley’s OPTA stats offer some promise of offensive returns, confirming that he has had a high level of involvement in terms of touches of the ball and key passes.

Onuoha’s absence may present some short-term options and/or create some defensive frailties, but with the fixtures largely showing different shades of blue (BLA, avl, NEW, blp, CHE, stk), owning a Sunderland defender or goalkeeper Craig Gordon, has to be given very serious consideration, with a strong case being made for selecting Bardsley for the Gameweek’s ahead.

[*] A handy tool for determining how to spread one’s funds between players and positions, “Value (Season)” is calculated by dividing the total number of points that a player has scored by the player’s current price.

For every two points he goes up after you buy him, you only get to sell him for one extra. So, you bought him at either 8.5 or 8.6.

    Schwarzer
    Kolarov / Rafael / Coleman
    Nasri / Gerrard / VdV / Nani
    K Davies / Ebanks-Blake / Bent

Subs: Robinson / Hughes / Skrtel / Etherington

1 free transfer, 0.6 mil. Pretty sure I'll do 2 transfers as I have so many players with rest/injury potential:

    a) K Davies/Nani >> Berbatov/Henderson
    b) Ebanks-blake/Gerrard >> Berbatov/Essien
    c) K Davies >> Rodallega

Pretty sure I'm going to use my wildcard week 22, so it's a really short term move.

    Nani,VDV,Giggs,Nasri,Yaya
    Carroll,Torres,Bent

What do you suggest? Have had some 30 pointers and a 25 pt for GW20...I was thinking Evatt for Baines and Lamps for Nani..

Going to Captain Kolarov this week. Have I gone mad?

I was going to captain Torres, but I don't trust Liverpool to do well against Bolton. I can't do Nani, because if he doesn't play the auto cap will go to either Torres or Coleman. I'm not convinced Tevez will play the full 90 and I think he could well start as a sub.

Kolarov has a good chance of a cleanie and probably has more attacking/assisting threat than most City Midfielders I would say.

Hi - woukd anyone please mind having a look at my team (linked) and give me any thoughts on what to do this gw. I am worried about being able to field 11 given injury to carroll and nani and jara suspension and possible rotation worries elsewhere.

I have 1 free transfe but not averse to taking 4 point hit and have 1.1 in bank. Was thinking of carroll to berba and vidic to bardsley - is that wise or better to wait and see what position is re carroll?

    Any other suggestions gratefully received

I do hope this Carroll 'month out' thing is true. I've been itching for an excuse to drop him. Saves waiting for his points to slow down, which they HAVE to at some point. Last weeks two pointer coupled with this injury seems perfect timing. 🙂

    Two options.

    1) Make half-drunken transfers now.

    2) Go to bed and TRY to get up before 11 tomorrow....

Last drunk transfer I made was Elmander -> Bent (C) when he got the assist in the crap week. Which was a decent one, all sober transfers recently have resulted in huge red arrows....

Don’t usually do these, but am fairly stuck.

A.Bent and Silva > Tevez and Adam (-4)
B.N’Zogbia and Torres > Tevez and Adam (-4)
    C.Torres > Tevez

A and C force me to play Rafael.

    Thoughts?
    Can I survive without Tevez?

      Option A is stupid.
Option C leaves you with N'zogbia.(don't have certain nonstarters in squad)
Option B is the best of the three.

However, I can't see the logic in Mancini changing Tuesdays starting XI. Midweek they have Arsenal, my way of thinking is that tomorrows game is the perfect opportunity to give that XI another run out and leave Kolo Toure,Tevez,Kolorov etc tucked up ready for the Gooners. But then I'm not in charge at Eastlands. Hope that helps in some small way.

Bent, Silva and Torres all have reasonable home fixtures this week. Nzogbia is worth hanging onto seeing as he is only going to miss 2 gwks.

Playing Rafael is no bad thing in the circumstances with Utd looking strong at weakening WBA.

Personally I wouldn't do any transfers (I never do hits) this week and make your double transfer next week. I don't know the rest of your team but Fabregas, Adam and Tevez are all essential in my opinion.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!

Big problems this game week (again). Just what a need after last weeks disaster (24pts).

    PROBABLY OUT
    Carrol
    Nani
    Salcido

    POSSIBLY OUT
    Konchesky (dropped)
    Gerrard (injured)
    VDV (rested)

Any suggestions? It looks like Baird will probably keep his place so i'll probably replace salcido. But with who? 5.3 mill. I've got one eye on the DGW. I would go with a fulham or blackpool defender but they have spurs and blackpool but they have really bad fixtures this week. Is it worth leaving it a week and possibly playing with 10 (or less) men? Or look outside the DGW?

    Here's my current team:

    Gordon (Foster)
Kolarov | Konchesky | Rafael | Coleman (Simpson)
Bale | Cahill | Nasri | Nani (Lee)
    Drogba | Tevez (c) (Carroll)

One free transfer and 0.1 in the bank

My original plan was to save a transfer this week and transfer in VDV and C.Adam for Lee and Cahill next week. With the news of Carroll out and Nani a doubt, I would be short of coverage in my subs with only Simpson coming in, which I wouldn't like.

    Am thinking of the following
    1. Lee out for 5.1 mid - maybe Cleverly?
    2. Cahill out for VDV and Lee out for C.Adam - this would mean taking a hit but I fancy VDV to do well (if he plays today) and getting in Adam in time for next week's DGW
    3. Save the transfer for next week and hope Nani plays today

    Any comments would be appreciated!

I have a feeling I am going to have 10 players playing for the 3rd week running. I can either replace one of the players I think won't play or replace a playing one with one who has better scoring potential imo. Decisions decisions...

I had a similar decision to make. Do I replace Jarvis for someone better, or do I get rid of Huth, who's banned and then has Man United away the following week? I took the short-term option and subbed out Huth for Bruma.

It all depends how good the two players are. Jarvis could get something against West Ham, even if he isn't an ideal choice, so he stayed.

I know its a gamble. I'm gonna use the wildcard in two weeks time. I can field a good 3-man defence until then without using Bruma again. And for this week he's a 4.5 million starter in the defence most likely to keep a cleanie.

If he gets a cleanie this week, then it'll have been a success.

What a way to kick off 2011. Carroll out for a month? Ouch.

Only the people who transfer early get punished though. Waiting always has it's advantages outside the money game.

I replied to your post.If you haven't traded you can cover the Carroll loss if you decide to sell or if you have squad depth you just bench him. It's 4.30pm on a stinking hot day here. No alcohol in the system atm.

No need for a reply, but thanks anyway. I'm just thinking out loud.

I think i might just do nothing and go in the game with 12 players and hope for the best. Bench NZog/Carrol. If anyone gets rotated/dropped i'm in for a shocker.

Worried Adams 2 home games gets canned due to freeze next gw.

Fair enough, you joining the 2 leagues I set up? You would be in the top 40 of the Xmas League or will your rivals get too suspicious?

Seems like it is a bit of a relay. Get Fabregas back and Nani/Tevez are out and get them back (well maybe) and Carroll is out. Suppose it is the nature of the game. Almost need a couple of extra bench players!

I think Carroll being out makes the game 10 times more interesting. 54% own him & the way they react to the news will be interesting if a month is correct.

No standout replacements. Maybe Varney. This news annoys me, it's adds an extra transfer onto a hectic list.
