Exceeding most if not all pre-season projections, Sunderland’s defence will end 2010 with 9 clean sheets to their name, ranking them up there with Chelsea and Man City.

It is no surprise given that record, that three of the top six defenders for “Value (Season)”* are Sunderland players, Ahmed Elmomahady (14.2), Nedum Onuoha (13.8), and Phil Bardsley (13.1). Owning a Black Cats defender has become an economical, if not necessary, way to pursue the elusive defensive returns, with roughly 30% of the FPL teams currently owning one of these three defenders.

Onuoha has proved a popular selection, despite being the most expensive option in Steve Bruce’s back four, but a recent hamstring injury has de-railed his bandwagon. Elmomahady meanwhile, is less expensive at 4.8 but lost his role on the right of midfield, only to be recently reinstalled at right-back following injuries. He’s a far less secure and attractive option in that role. Which leaves Phil Bardsley, the least expensive of the options at 4.5 and a player who has taken his opportunity this season to cement a left-back role and emerge a prime Fantasy target as the Sunderland fixture list continues to fall favourably.

A warm story for the holidays, Bardsley was benched at the end of last season and then only had 1 appearance for 45 minutes in the first five games of this season. But a pre-season stint in a boxing gym is credited with improvements to his fitness and primed him to seize the opportunity presented by Kieran Richardson’s early season hamstring injury. The result is that he has started every game since Gamewek 6, being subbed on only one occasion, and is enjoying one of his best seasons.

In reality, Bardsley should be viewed as a reliable and economical purchase and one of the Fantasy surprises of the season. Tempered expectations are warranted, but our Members can see for themselves how Bardsley’s OPTA stats offer some promise of offensive returns, confirming that he has had a high level of involvement in terms of touches of the ball and key passes.

Onuoha’s absence may present some short-term options and/or create some defensive frailties, but with the fixtures largely showing different shades of blue (BLA, avl, NEW, blp, CHE, stk), owning a Sunderland defender or goalkeeper Craig Gordon, has to be given very serious consideration, with a strong case being made for selecting Bardsley for the Gameweek’s ahead.

[*] A handy tool for determining how to spread one’s funds between players and positions, “Value (Season)” is calculated by dividing the total number of points that a player has scored by the player’s current price.

I'd either get Odem in next GW or see if you can upgrade to Berbs.

    Morning. Happy New Year!

I'm replacing Carroll till WC (I'll only lose 0.2 max as not had him since start).

Wellbeck looks good this GW but finding it hard to resist Blackpools forthcoming doubles from next week onwards.

So the question is: DJ or Varney out of the Blackpool front line? Seems to me not much in it but leaning towards Varney as seems to also assist more. But then DJ on form right now.

    Opinions welsome.

I am still umming and ahhing over my possible 4 point hit to try and avoid the 9 player situation that killed me last week. Salcido seems to be the main contender for the chop (probably going to bench and keep Carroll).

Coleman, Huth (even though he will miss this week), Elmo, Bardsley, Nelson seem to be the main contenders.

The probable shortlist is Coleman or Bardsley. Flip of a coin?

It's a tough one because of the potential for Sunderland cleansheets. And I might be forced into a change with Kyrgiakos depending on Liverpool's setup. But I am willing to wait a week on that one - which might involve a switch over to Skrtel.

    repost

I’m taking out carroll next week. I can sell him at 6, he will fall by atleast by .3 (looking at the rate at which VDV rose and majority of carroll owners will ship him out)..and get him back at 6.2.

Varney or DJ cambell? I must admit i haven’t watched much of blackpool.

The greater the length of time the more likely people will jump off and cause his price to drop making his cheaper to get back. VdV was like that for me. That said, I think I am going to keep him for now (I bought him at 5.8, so would "only" need a 0.4 drop to be able to get him back at the same price I sell him for).

My maths is bad but I see it as this.

When you sell him, you have put 0.6m into your team to spend on other players.

When you buy him back you have to spend 0.6m more than you sold him for

      so you are break even?!

If his price falls you win.

Carroll -> DJ Campbell to take advantage of all the double GWs coming up? Good move? Shame they've got City today.

You putting Campbell ahead of Varney then, since they almost have the same price?

Yeah, no reason though. Varney better? I don't really know who the stand-out Blackpool players are apart from Adam.

I'm going to get rid of N'Zogbia but I want to put in a risky player so he may off.

I think I shall go for A.Johnson! Anybody have any other sneaky picks for this week only?

Scotty Parker. 1 goal, 3 bps - buggu it.

If he had more long-term potential I'd get him.

I've got N'Zogbia to Parker just for this week and then I'll bring in Adam for the dgw. Make sense?

I am also toying with Yaya Toure as a one-off (instead of Parker). Can't decide. Will he be rested? He came off early enough v Villa which suggests he might start today...

2 trades instead of one? Parker better have a good week in that case & hopefully no more injuries.

What do you reckon TM? Parker or Yaya for this week?

If it's Parker then he'll bite the dust for Adam next gw. If it's Yaya then I could keep him and bin MGP for Adam instead.

Parker looks the better choice to me. Neither player will get near my side this season though. Adam could easily score well this week.

I don't think I'll be selling Carroll today without some very firm info on how long he's out for. If it's only 2 GWs (has the FA cup break to recover) it would be stupid to sell.

Agree. I had him for 5.0m, so will lose 0.8m on him.

That's a lot ain't it. Worth waiting indeed when you stand to lose that kind of money.

Anyway he looks a big tough bugger (apart from the pony tail!).

        I'd be hopeful he'll make a quick recovery. 🙂

Wait unless you're really struggling to field 11. If he's not out for a month and you sell, you might not be able to get him back.

Length hard to say. Month predicted but you know how these things can increase of decrease without warning.

Personally, if I had him from the start I'd keep him at least for now till there's news on his progress.

I am indeed struggling to get 11 fit players on the park. I was thinking of getting in Kolarov for Kyrgiakos..Is it worthe the gamble? The only hitch is that Kolrov doesn't start allt he games

After last week when Mancini swept the rug out, it's hard to say for definite. I think Kolarov will start since he was rested last game, but would be a slight gamble doing that transfer.

There is a chance Kolarov doesn't play and Kyriagkos does. Although I do expect the big Greek to be dropped.

Happy New Year folks. Can somebody dig their crystal ball out and tell me if Berbatov is going to play today? I'm debating taking a 4 pointer on Caroll, I've had him since 5m so it could be a bit of a hit but I'm concerned that I may have to rely on Simpson or Evatt to get me some points if Nani does't play!

In my team, Carroll and Onuoha def. not playing. Who to bring on from the bench?
    Kyrgiakos
    Barton
    Cahill (bolton)

No brainer choosing Barton I suppose, but I can't pick the Liverpool/Bolton game. I think they're both going to score.
