A gutsy Villa showing exposes the Chelsea frailties at the Bridge to earn a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Down at the DW Stadium meanwhile, Wigan whimper allowing Newcastle to earn a comfortable 1-0 win as another Gameweek closes…

Chelsea lined up as expected with Jeffrey Bruma given his opportunity alongside skipper John Terry. The only one area of doubt surrounded Carlo Ancelotti’s choice at right-back and he decided to rotate here with Paulo Ferreira coming in for Jose Bosingwa. Elsewhere Ramires continued in midfield with Mikel still sidelined.

Ferreira struggled badly and the decision to remove him with 30 minutes left and introduce Bosingwa was roundly cheered by the Stamford Bridge crowd. Bosingwa would appear to be in the box seat for that role, at least while Branislav Ivanovic is forced to fill in alongside Terry.

Defensively Chelsea still have major problems. After fetching a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Bolton, Chelsea looked vulnerable. Carlo Ancelotti’s rearguard has kept just that one shut-out in their last 8 league matches, a record which won’t increase the confidence of Fantasy Managers looking at their defensive assets.

Ancelotti was quick to acknowledge the defensive frailties after the game…

“Obviously i just want to say that Bruma played very well but we are without Alex and Ivanovic, we lost some energy on the high ball. We conceded the second goal for this reason, the third was different because we needed to have more attention in the box.â€

In attacking terms Chelsea did at least find the net three times for the first time since Gameweek 5 back September. That meant more returns for Didier Drogba who has continued to dribble in points of late and maintain his place in many a Fantasy squad. Drogba has now scored or assisted in his last 5 league matches.

Frank Lampard’s return has relieved Drogba of spot-kick duties and it was Lampard who fired home Chelsea’s opener with Florent Malouda drawing the foul for the assist. Lampard has slotted back to a familiar role in the Chelsea engine room and our Members’ OPTA stats suggest that he has already begun to pose a significant goal threat and taken up set-piece duty at corners and free-kicks.

Gerard Houllier reacted to the pressure coming his way by turning to experience against Chelsea. Richard Dunne returned to the back four after impressing in training, shifting Carlos Cuellar to right-back with Eric Lichaj making way. Further forward we saw Emile Heskey return, with Gabby Agbonlahor retaining his place and Marc Albrighton surprisingly dropping to the bench.

Two of Villa’s young hopefuls eventually proved key players on the day however; Albrighton saw action and typically provided the assist for fellow sub Ciaran Clark to nod home the late equalizer. Houlier’s lineup for the home clash with Sunderland will be interesting in regards to Albrighton’s role – it could be that he struggles to break back into the side for several weeks if Agbonlahor shows some form.

Over at the DW Stadium Wigan lined up with Jordi Gomez drafted in to replace the suspended Charles N’Zogbia. Roberto Martinez left the rest of his side intact as Antolin Alcaraz recovered from injury to start.

Martinez described the defeat to Newcastle as “the worst performance of the season†as his side struggled to make an impression on the visitors defence or wrestle any real authority in midfield. Charles N’Zogbia was missed – badly missed.

Wigan travel to the Reebok to face Bolton in midweek – Owen Coyle’s side will be fancying their chances in that one and owners of Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies will surely be holding firm and expecting returns.

Alan Pardew turned to Shola Ameobi to lead his attack in the absence of thigh injury victim Andy Carroll. He pushed Peter Lovenkrands up in support, dropping Wayne Routledge to the bnech and shifting Kevin Nolan to a deeper central midfield role – a significant move for his Fantasy potential.

Ameobi duly delivered a first-half goal to win the game and would seem certain to lead the attack while Carroll remains sidelined. At just 4.2 in the FPL, he could warrant some short-term attention. Carroll could well make a return for Gameweek 23 according to quotes from Alan Pardew in his post-match comments.

Steve Harper returned to the Magpies’ goal in this one and immediately returned a clean sheet – Newcastle’s first in seven league games. Tim Krul is now surely set for bench duty for the remainder of the season with Harper now back on the radar as a 4.3 goalkeeping prospect.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ah good, I've missed Lampard while he's been injured. I always enjoy moaning about his dreadful free kicks.

Unless the free kick is about 40 yards out (like the one yesterday, which was pretty close btw... NAAAAAAAAAT!) Lampard shouldn't be any near the free kick.

He's my second choice, my first being Steven Gerrard but I will only buy Gerrard in the first place if Nani doesn't start.

Can't argue with such a high chance for lots of bonus points.

          Hey bds, been some time.

It all depends on if Nani starts or not, we will have the lineups before deadline, but if he doesn't them I've had it with him for now and will have a punt on Gerrard.

He looked sharp last game and set up plenty of chances for his team mates and had a couple of shots that were not THAT far away. I feel he should have had bonus.

I don't expect him to score 60 points but I think it's a good place for a punt on a player not many have.

Smacks of Milnergate II from last season. Villa had 2 reasonably easy games (WLV and sun from memory), a strong defence, Milner was scoring goals and he was a bonus point darling. It went totally tits up. I would go Nani if he's playing.

There's got to be a decent chance of at least one of the Blackpool matches getting postponed again, right? I'm limiting myself to Adam from BLP, and probably won't captain him.

Not unless the weather takes a turn for the worse? It seems okay at the moment, a lot warmer than it was.

Adam seems like the obvious choice to me, even if he just turns up and doesn't get booked he's got 4 points - more than my captain has had a lot of weeks.

If blackpool can grab at least a couple of goals or any kind of result in these two games (very likely in my eyes), then you're looking at a good return. If he does well in both you're looking at merkage.

Twice the games, twice the chance of success.

Don't take Elmander out when he faces a poor Wigan road team missing N'Zog.

Don't chase this week's DGW. Look at DGW in week 24. If you're taking Cashley out (as I'm considering) then get in someone solid and reliable who you could play every week.

If you want a Liv defender I'd do Skrtel for £5.6m instead of Cole and maybe do Tevez to Torres until WC time as you'd expect City to struggle against Arsenal and you have Drogs as cover.

Birmingham don't have much attacking threat so I think a cleanie could well be on the cards. I still don't think it's worth the transfer getting a defender in. As far as I'm concerned getting Adam in with my free transfer is enough. I don't want to be taking a 4-point hit for a player I will have to shift after this week

Go for Skrtel, hodgson has played him in every game this season so he's a better option. Agger i don't think will play all 3 games in 8 days because of his fitness, and its a possibility he may be used against united in the FA Cup. I would expect skrtel and johnson to play all 3 games, but the other defenders will rotate.

        Why not sell Foster?

Birmingham aren't exactly lighting the PL up, and he doesn't rotate well with many keepers for the remaining games. You can get Fabianski for the same price, and he not only has a substantially better run of fixtures, but also a better team in front of him.

          He's just slow and overrated.

But if he plays against Wolves, he'll be on corners, so maybe he'll stay on for 60 this time!

I got a question - I bought Bale, Adam and DJ Campbell for GW 22, and my team is :
    Begovic
    Huth, Terry, Coleman
    Bale, VDV, Malouda, Adam
    Tevez, Drogba, DJ
    -------
    Foster, R.Johnson, Etherington, Elmohamady

Should I bench Coleman for Elmohamady and whom to give a (C) ??

If only one or two of his chances went the other way and I'm sure he would be a nailed on starter, such a shame. I was watching videos earlier of him knocking out referees with powerful shots to the face.

Why is everyone so sure he won't start? he's been a regular up until now.

they spent a lot of money on Kolarov, so what's the point in buying someone you don't trust against any winger with a bit of pace?

Of course, Mancini's alternative is to play Milner ahead of David Silva, who neglects any kind of duty around covering his full-back.

Yes i think he will. He has not missed a minute for us this season as Roy tends to favour him. If he is left out, I would be surprised. The only liverpool defenders i would consider are skrtel and johnson as they will play all games, the others its a gamble. I actually took kyro out myself this week, for skrtel. i think agger was brilliant this week and will keep his place instead of kyro, but agger might not play the last game because he's not as fit enough to play 3 games in a week.

WC in GW 24 is my big recommendation, and use stop-gap transfers until then.

Your team is actually different but decent.

Obviously, defense is your big weakness. Kolarov, Bosingwa and Givet aren't good.

Considering who you might field at the back this week, I'd get rid of Kolarov and get Skrtel. He'll be good until GW 25 minimum.

I wouldn't rush to take out Lampard. He has two relatively good games coming up, and at his price, he could be a real differential for you.

The whole fixture structure sort of changes in GW 24. ManUtd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Blackpool really get a big boost from it, so by then, you'll be able to tell if keeping Lampard or having a Chelsea player is worth it. Keep Carroll as well considering the strength of your midfield, losing that sort of value has to be for a good reason.

Tevez (11.2 selling price) out Torres in.

I know Tevez has Wolves at home next but we all saw how are City at home. Awful. I will be ready for and for the second double. Planning to use WC after GW 24 and to go heavy on Ars and Tot.

I'm thinking of a possible bit of daftness..

MGP > Kuyt for a 4 point hit.

Kuyt isn't great value, until you add Liverpool's 2 x DGWs and then he becomes one of the best players to consider. He hasn't been dropped in quite a while, so one would think he's doing enough for Hodgson.

I don't like him because he messes up the flexibility of the team.

8.7 is a very annoying price. Neither mid price nor high end which means replacing him becomes difficult. You'll want someone very good to keep in that mid-high end price bracket like Van Der Vaart.

Thats a bloody good ranking, and consistent too Camzy, nice one!
I started off OK but its been crap since then, Im hoping DGW will help!

Yeah I have VDV and Nani too. Liverpool have some nice games until the backend of WC time where I'd be starting a fresh anyway.

at 8.7 VDV is a much better option - he takes setpieces and penalties and is playing for a very offesive team in Spurs.

Aye I already have VDV. I'm just thinking MGP out for Kuyt could work well. Not sure whether it's worth a hit though.

Anyone thinking of not having any DGW players, just purely to make a bold statement?

Haha, well I'd have considered Adam without any DGWs, so bringing him in for NZogbia last week was a no brainer for me.

I already had Konchesky and Torres, and brought Varney in. I guess it's a no from me, but will only have 4. Some will no doubt have 6.

6 is silly i think, but we'll see! I may have 3, perhaps more for the second DGW but 6..hhmmm!
