A gutsy Villa showing exposes the Chelsea frailties at the Bridge to earn a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Down at the DW Stadium meanwhile, Wigan whimper allowing Newcastle to earn a comfortable 1-0 win as another Gameweek closes…

Chelsea lined up as expected with Jeffrey Bruma given his opportunity alongside skipper John Terry. The only one area of doubt surrounded Carlo Ancelotti’s choice at right-back and he decided to rotate here with Paulo Ferreira coming in for Jose Bosingwa. Elsewhere Ramires continued in midfield with Mikel still sidelined.

Ferreira struggled badly and the decision to remove him with 30 minutes left and introduce Bosingwa was roundly cheered by the Stamford Bridge crowd. Bosingwa would appear to be in the box seat for that role, at least while Branislav Ivanovic is forced to fill in alongside Terry.

Defensively Chelsea still have major problems. After fetching a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Bolton, Chelsea looked vulnerable. Carlo Ancelotti’s rearguard has kept just that one shut-out in their last 8 league matches, a record which won’t increase the confidence of Fantasy Managers looking at their defensive assets.

Ancelotti was quick to acknowledge the defensive frailties after the game…

“Obviously i just want to say that Bruma played very well but we are without Alex and Ivanovic, we lost some energy on the high ball. We conceded the second goal for this reason, the third was different because we needed to have more attention in the box.”

In attacking terms Chelsea did at least find the net three times for the first time since Gameweek 5 back September. That meant more returns for Didier Drogba who has continued to dribble in points of late and maintain his place in many a Fantasy squad. Drogba has now scored or assisted in his last 5 league matches.

Frank Lampard’s return has relieved Drogba of spot-kick duties and it was Lampard who fired home Chelsea’s opener with Florent Malouda drawing the foul for the assist. Lampard has slotted back to a familiar role in the Chelsea engine room and our Members’ OPTA stats suggest that he has already begun to pose a significant goal threat and taken up set-piece duty at corners and free-kicks.

Gerard Houllier reacted to the pressure coming his way by turning to experience against Chelsea. Richard Dunne returned to the back four after impressing in training, shifting Carlos Cuellar to right-back with Eric Lichaj making way. Further forward we saw Emile Heskey return, with Gabby Agbonlahor retaining his place and Marc Albrighton surprisingly dropping to the bench.

Two of Villa’s young hopefuls eventually proved key players on the day however; Albrighton saw action and typically provided the assist for fellow sub Ciaran Clark to nod home the late equalizer. Houlier’s lineup for the home clash with Sunderland will be interesting in regards to Albrighton’s role – it could be that he struggles to break back into the side for several weeks if Agbonlahor shows some form.

Over at the DW Stadium Wigan lined up with Jordi Gomez drafted in to replace the suspended Charles N’Zogbia. Roberto Martinez left the rest of his side intact as Antolin Alcaraz recovered from injury to start.

Martinez described the defeat to Newcastle as “the worst performance of the season” as his side struggled to make an impression on the visitors defence or wrestle any real authority in midfield. Charles N’Zogbia was missed – badly missed.

Wigan travel to the Reebok to face Bolton in midweek – Owen Coyle’s side will be fancying their chances in that one and owners of Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies will surely be holding firm and expecting returns.

Alan Pardew turned to Shola Ameobi to lead his attack in the absence of thigh injury victim Andy Carroll. He pushed Peter Lovenkrands up in support, dropping Wayne Routledge to the bnech and shifting Kevin Nolan to a deeper central midfield role – a significant move for his Fantasy potential.

Ameobi duly delivered a first-half goal to win the game and would seem certain to lead the attack while Carroll remains sidelined. At just 4.2 in the FPL, he could warrant some short-term attention. Carroll could well make a return for Gameweek 23 according to quotes from Alan Pardew in his post-match comments.

Steve Harper returned to the Magpies’ goal in this one and immediately returned a clean sheet – Newcastle’s first in seven league games. Tim Krul is now surely set for bench duty for the remainder of the season with Harper now back on the radar as a 4.3 goalkeeping prospect.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Last two gameweeks have proper killed me.
    Argh.
Thinking about Captaining Varney over Adam...
Varney has scored over 3 points in 10 out of 15 games.
4/5 of those games where he didn't score over 3 were away.
He has an average of 4.5 points per game.
Charlie has scored over 3 points in 10 out of 17 games.
3/7 of those games where he didn't score over 3 were home.
He has an average of 4.8 points per game.

    What do you guys think?

I think you are trying to justify picking Varney over Adam with numbers. I do not think it is a way around it, cpt Varney is a bigger gamble. You risk losing out on Adam's points, if you are lucky, you might get a differential.

I only have Adam for the DGW - worth a hit to bring in someone else? I'm reluctant to bring in a defender as could end up with minus points. Any other midfielder from either Pool worth considering (can't afford Gerrard? Don't want to lose Carroll for say Varney/Campbell as will cost me too much to get him back.

Hypothetical question, who would you captain if it wasn't for the matter of the 'pool v 'pool game. I think some of us are getting a little over excited about this game. Adam isn't that great at home, Liverpool ain't that great away from home.

I'm thinking Nani will be a better option fitness permitting?

Lads, Its been so long since a DGW, I have forgot something.

If a defender concedes 3 in 1 game and 1 in the other. Does that add up to 4 in FPL terms, so -2? Or is it just the -1?

Liverpool have a DGW now (GW 22) and also in 2 weeks time (GW 24).

    Blackburn - Liverpool
    Blackpool - Liverpool
    Liverpool - Everton
    Wolves - Liverpool
    Liverpool - Fulham

While Chelsea have no DGW`s, their fixtures:

    Wolves - Chelsea
    Chelsea - Blackburn
    Bolton - Chelsea

For no hit, really not worth it to bring Torres into the team for Drogba for these couple of GW`s ? Then take a WC after GW24 and get Drogba back?

I dislike Torres (Screamed some really bad words to him from row 2 behind the goal at the opening game at WHL last season) but 5 fixtures vs 3.. this one should be close?

      Mathematically speaking, if Torres is on average at least 60% as likely to score as Drogba in a single game, then it's worth it i.e. ( 5 x 6 pts = 30 & 3 x 10 pts = 30)

Going on form I would probably still back Drogba.

Just two players in the top 50 have any experience of finishing above 10k in previous seasons, and only a few more have ever broken the top 50k.

There's a chance that a few could have changed their usernames this season (as I did last season), but apart from that, they're all casual players and first-timers.

That would never have happened last season.

Which is odd because it's only chelsea who aren't performing to last seasons levels out of the top 5 teams. I think most people are really happy with their teams pre Gw, then are left scratching their heads with scraping 30 points by the end.

My new tactic is to double up defenders, just need to decide which the second club will be post WC. Sunderland and titus shambles is current fav.

i would probably captain VDV simply based on his strong form and i think everton are struggling at home. there is a risk that he will get rested but i personally think he is to important for spurs

Keeper - Irrelevant as both will probably concede
Defence - Looks fine to me.

Good plan to be honest, i have taken an 8 point hit after dropping 400,000ish places in the last 3 game weeks. Living the FPL dream at the moment. Just hope that Evatt, Adams and Varney all do something and that Torres (who i have had for a while) finally gets some goals away from home over the coming weeks.

Because he is shit? and so are the liverpool defence at the moment? 8 pointers suck major but tbh could be a differential over the coming weeks even 4 points from each player per double game week going to pay back instantly.

it depends on the news your getting in, theres a long wait from this gameweek to the next gameweek, its like the international break, lots of decreases and increases, if the news says he will be back for the sunderland match then it wont decrease much, if hes a massive doubt then the passive players will see the red flag and get rid

I mentioned this yesterday so please read again

for all the people taking hits for defenders and wildcarding next GW don't

simple maths... they player your transfering out needs to score 4 points less than the player your transfering in just to break even.

Blackpool aren't known for keeping clean sheets.

If your transfering a player out whos not going to play then its possible the defender your transfering in could also lose points. just because they are playing 2 games they have as much chance in gaining points as losing points.

If your transfering a defender and not playing your wildcard till the last GW then it's worth it as mid term they have home games and a good run with another double game week

Please take this into account and if your taking a hit for a blackpool defender and then wildcarding just remember its not automatically going to get your -4 points back

if you've given up on this game why are you still here? and the amount of people who are asking should i do a 4 pointer for Evatt etc its unreal so rather than bitching a moaning why don't you actually give something helpful to this site rather than bitching about other peoples post, someone early even asked how the scoring works so not everyones like us knowing how it all works, some people just look at the double and think, 2 games should get me more points. how about you grow up and just because your crap at this game doesn't mean you have to be immature

Also, Nasri has not given anyone a reason to transfer him yet. I love Fabregas but can't imagine spending so much for what is currently little difference. I do however believe that in the future when Fab is 100% that he will outscore Nasri. Time and injuries will tell I guess.

i already have fabregas (kept faith i know tut tut) so im taking nasri out for adam and upgrading bent to torres, if i had nasri i would keep him and sort fabregas out when i use my wildcard, think the majority of the players have bigger problems than nasri

(Hypothically if Nani plays this week)

    Nasri -> Gerrard
    Bent -> Varney

Then switching Nasri back in the following week?

Any further thoughts or suggestions for my team? linked

It's probably worth keeping Gerrard considering he has another double gameweek in week 24. You also need to consider how much you bought the other midfielders for but...

Van Der Vaarts next 3 gameweeks are tougher when compared to Nasris. Obviously Nasris is harder this week but...

Yet again another way of looking at it argghh! Good point though, would certainly be scared of losing 0.6 on Nani but feel his price may drop a bit more. Would only lose 0.1 on Nasri and you have a good point with VDV and he will probably get rested. The only thing that is keeping me from transferring him is he seems to score no matter what!

        Cheers for opinion

Oh and ship Foley/Ivanovic for Skrtel/Evatt I'd say.

Chance of them outscoring 2 pool games away to Chelsea/Not playing is limited. Also probably needed considering I doubt Kolarov or Coleman will keep a clean sheet this week. Atleast that way you can put Rafael/Skrtel/Evatt out.

Hmmm tempting yes.... If I am to take a punt on something involving points hit it would have to be a midfielder as clean sheets are generally pretty hard to come by in any game.

        1. I feel Liverpool will concede in both games. Skrtel could score though.
        2. If Chelsea dont finally keep a clean sheet against Wolves I will ship Ivanovic out.
        3. Kolarov, simply for attacking potential IF he plays and Im guessing he wont.
        4. Similiar reason for Coleman and probably not willing to sell him just yet, has hit good form.

I really am confused on what to do. 8 point hit and future potential with double gameweeks
        Get Gerrard, Varney and Evatt
        for Nani/Nasri, Bent and Foley???

        Thoughts

Aye in fairness Anderson has been excellent in that position of late but he can't play every game. More worrying for us is how reliant we are on Nani.

Sir Alex has not forgotten how his team was destroyed by Kaka and Milan in the UCL a few years ago

      Red arrow, just! 😉

Nah, nice. I'm personally keeping Carroll, can't stand looking at my team with more Blackpool players other than Charlie Adam in it if honest. I'd probably play Coleman ahead of Givet..
