Messrs Hodgson, Houllier, Grant and Ancelotti suffered restless nights as Wednesday defeats left all four teetering on the brink. In contrast, Alex Ferguson surely slept like a baby, as City and the woodwork denied a fluid Arsenal at the Emirates…

Arsenal played some sparkling football, struck the woodwork twice and drew some superb stops from Joe Hart in the City goal. Their heavyweight Fantasy talent – Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie were all prominent on the night. Arsenal’s forthcoming fixtures are now very strong and include a double Gameweek with two home matches against Wolves and Stoke in Gameweek 27. Heavy investment in their attacking talent looks likely.

Johan Djourou was once again selected ahead of Sebastien Schillaci and subsequently earned a second consecutive clean sheet and second 2 point Bonus haul. Djourou looks to have nudged ahead of Schillaci in the pecking order and at just 4.2 in the FPL, he is offering a value route to Arsenal defensive returns. As long as Thomas Vermaelen remains sidelined and Arsene Wenger stays out of the transfer market, he looks a decent prospect.

Bacary Sagna’s straight red card for violent conduct will see him serve a three-match ban but he will only miss one league match. Sagna will sit out the FA Cup tie against Leeds, the Carling Cup semi-final with Ipswich and the league trip to West Ham.

Pablo Zabaleta’s rather unfortunate dismissal in the “incident” with Sagna will earn him a three-match ban, subject to a possible appeal from City. The full-back will miss the FA Cup tie with Leicester this weekend and league matches with Wolves and Villa. His absence could well allow Aleksandar Kolarov to earn a recall at left-back.

Roy Hodgson made an array of changes to his Liverpool starting lineup, perhaps surprisingly recalling both Paul Konchesky and Sotirios Kyrgiakos. The latter was badly at fault for Benjani’s opener and Blackburn’s second and was replaced on 51 minutes with the benched Dan Agger introduce. His arrival failed to settle a Liverpool defence that looked simply woeful and was exposed on several occasions by the Rovers attack.

In attacking terms Liverpool were similarly disappointing. Hodgson set his side out to carry more threat but they failed to turn possession into clean cut chances. Steven Gerrard’s typically did his best to drag the visitors back into the game but his spooned penalty summed up another awful night for Hodgson.

Despite the fine win, few Fantasy Managers are likely to be considering Blackburn’s assets with Morten Gamst-Pedersen now simmering. The Norwegian – a popular target a few Gameweek’s back, has now gone 7 starts without a goal and, despite the assist last night, his remaining owners will surely be shifting him out in favour of a double Gameweek alternative.

Chelsea’s dredful decline continued with defeat at Molineux. They managed just 3 attempts on target on all night and were unable to break down peg back the early goal from George Elokobi. It’s now just 1 clean sheet in the last 7 league games. In attacking terms the stats are just as damming – Carlo Ancelotti’s side have scored just 9 goals in their last 11, and 3 of those came in Sunday’s 3-3 with Villa. Their returns continue to look limited at both ends of the field.

Rafael Van der Vaart again confirmed his status as a Fantasy heavyweight with another goal, his ninth of the season, in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat at Goodison. The Dutchman fired in multiple efforts and was a instrumental in the visitors’ set-piece routines – emphasising his importance and value for Fantasy Managers.

Gareth Bale was withdrawn by Harry Redknapp on 59 minutes of the match – the official line is that the Welshman had suffered “a number of knocks” and was generally fatigued after the hectic Christmas programme. Bale will surely earn a rest in the FA Cup tie with Charlton.

Seamus Coleman once more stood out as an “out of position” asset with a third goal of the season, his second in his last 3 starts. Coleman enjoyed a superb evening and fetched the maximum 3 Bonus Points as a result. He looks to have cemented the role on the right-flank right now and, despite not having a double Gameweek to come, he could earn further investment over the next few weeks.

Emile Heskey’s red for violent conduct in Villa’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland will put him out of league matches with Birmingham and Man City. His absence could see Gabby Agbonlahor shifted to a lone striker role which in turn could re-introduce Marc Albrighton to the starting lineup. The winger was on the bench again last night, only seeing action late on.

Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley is another defensive option that raised his profile last night. He claimed his first goal of the season – a belting 25-yard effort, coupled with yet another clean sheet – Sunderland’s twelfth of the season. The win came at a cost for Steve Bruce’s side – David Meyler, having just returned from a long-term knee injury, sustained a blow to the same joint and faces another layoff; there are fears that he has damaged his cruciate knee ligament once again. More significantly for Fantasy Managers, Danny Welbeck sustained a hamstring injury. Bruce fears the worst on both counts…

“Meyler is a bad one…It is his cruciate ligament on the same knee as he did before and that is him out for six months at the very least…We will have to wait and see with Danny. He is going for a scan and I would not like to guess before we have the results, but that does not look like a good one either.”

Sunderland face Newcastle next and nobody could have foreseen Leon Best’s impact for them against West Ham last night. Best came in for Shola Ameobi who suffered a knock in training and duly grabbed a hat-trick in the 5-0 win. Best had not previously scored for Newcastle in a competitive match. He will look to keep his starting role at Stevenage in the FA Cup but did get withdrawn with a slight injury having sealed his hat-trick.

Kevin Nolan was a more familiar name on the scoresheet for the Magpies – his goal and assist saw him blink on the Fantasy radar once again. That was Nolan’s ninth of the season as he continues to consistently provide returns from midfield for an FPL fee of 6.1. He will surely come into consideration in the coming weeks with Newcastle’s double to come in Gameweek 27.

Cheick Tiote and Steven Taylor also picked up knocks in last night’s game – the latter was forced off just after half-time, missing out on the Newcastle clean sheet. Both are immediate doubts for the weekend Cup tie.

Wigan earned a point at the Reebok with Ronnie Stam notching his first goal for the Latics. The result came at a cost with Chris Kirkland suffering concussion and, more significantly, Tom Cleverley sustaining a hamstring injury with Roberto Martinez already concerned

“Tom [Cleverley] felt his hamstring straight away and that’s bad news. We have to see what the degree of the soft tissue injury is. He is a young man so I hope it shouldn’t be too long.”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Starting to ponder what my Wild Card team will look like. This is what I’ve got so far:

    Hart, Gordon
    Coleman, Bardsley, Hangeland, Rafael, Djourou
Fabregas, Nani, Van der Vaart, Etherington, Barton
    Tevez, Berbatov, Carroll

Leaving 1.6 in the bank to make any necessary upgrades.

    What do you think?

To make Fantasy football more interesting, do you think it'd be a good idea to give the the person playing the game responsiblity and they can spend their money on 5 forwards and 3 midfielders for example?

      Nope - makes it easier.

The only change I'd make is the auto-captain. We should pick a captain and nominate a reserve. If neither play, tough.

It just gives you slightly more flexibility throughout the season and more space for a differential. Tell me there's never been a time when you've wanted a player in your team but there's been no space?

If your desperate to play 3-5-2 and decide on that, with this you'll beable to buy your two dead-certs in attack and then 6 players in midfield to rotate?

But this doesn't make it more interesting! Just means you can pick all of VDV, Fab, Nasri, Nani, Cahill and Bale if you want instead of making a decision.

Are you the type of person who takes over other clubs on Football Manager just to sell their best players to your main team?

How about you sell your players for the value they are, no 50% sell-on-fee?

That'd make playing your WildCard early/during an international break very tempting indeed.

Well they could do it on total passes or pass accuracy, that would give the interesting dilemma of picking a DEF MID who would be likely to get the bonus or do you risk going for a more attacking mid for the assists or goal potential.
That way at least it would be a quantifiable amount, and it would stop the farce of players like Routledge getting it for twenty mins of ineffective football

Well maybe they should base it on something else so. Some sort of a rating system which we could all see. So we know why a certain player got a bp or didn't.

I'd like to be able to name a captain and vice-captain. If neither plays, it should then go on Value. We could manage without the Form option, which sometimes gives some very strange results.

I don't have a problem with the bonus point system or the transfers, to be honest with you.

I don't like the auto captain idea because, if neither play in that gameweek its not your fault so why should you be penalized for it?

I do like the idea that they did in the world cup game we played in the summer, where you could gamble and pick a different captain overnight.

But it'd only work on gameweeks where the games were staged over several games and not everyone would have representation from the teams playing on the following days.

So, basically, I'm saying it ain't broke so don't try to fix it.

Any non-Brunt owners thinking of bringing him in for GW23?

The 'problem' is he has a nice DGW for GW27, which would mean keeping him in your WC team before considering letting him go when WBA's fixtures become quite tough from GW28 onwards:

stoke birmingham ARSENAL LIVERPOOL sunderland CHELSEA tottenham

But until then it looks a decent transfer.

I didn't really copy/paste it, I just looked at it really really hard til I could remember it.

I agree Chamakh, I don't like this WC. But thats because I'm top of most of my leagues and don't really feel I need it atm. It's going to be a big boost for those lower down though, so maybe tightening the gap is a good thing overall.

I'm guessing it was introduced to accommodate the real life transfer window, which is why I don't really understand people playing it before the Jan window shuts (unless you have 4/5 non-starters in your team).

At a guess, I'd say Leon Best, Kevin Nolan, Simon Davies, VDV, Coleman, Bardsley, Hangeland (ie the players that did well last week) will all rise by 0.2 by the start of GW23. There will be loads of players that rise by 0.1.

The one thing that reassures me is that it looks like a tough job for all those wilcarders out there to get an equally good double gameweek team out for GW 27, what with only 3 free transfers available between gw 24 and then.

I have 8 or so players for doubles in gw 24 so I think I'll be fine...

It's worth considering GW26 for your wildcard, as the week after Arsenals DGW they probably won't have a game due to the Carling Cup Final.

Therefore you may need a double saved transfer to field a decent team in GW28, (Double transfers don't carry after wildcards) be it benching or selling your Gooners ??

Yeah same. I guess making some money could be nice, but with that DGW in week 27 and the transfer window open I think I'm going to hold fire and save it.

First stab at possible Wild Card. Thoughts?

    Hart, Gordon
    Coleman, Bardsley, Hangeland, Rafael, Djourou
Fabregas, Nani, Van der Vaart, Etherington, Barton
    Tevez, Berbatov, Carroll

Leaves 1.6 in the bank to make any necessary upgrades.

Like it very much, but on Djourou, who is good, ..... I am never going to take a 60/40 or 80/20 player again, burned by Kolarov and Kyrgiakos. You get one guy hurt (Carroll for example) and then your second backup doesn't play (Djourou) and it's a bother..... or you think about taking a four point hit- when you get these last minute BS reports about knocks and whatever on your other "solid" players..

Jimmy-- you have Berbs, so to me he is almost an 80/20 player, absolutely great, but missed three of 20 GW (unexpectedly for new, casual players like me), so I wouldn't combine Djourou with him, but I am just cautious.

I was on holiday in Mexico first couple of weeks in December, then never really got back into it over Xmas. Weirdly, after getting back to work, I'm no here a lot more often...

I do have to say that the huge randomness of this season is rather disillusioning though. I'm not playing nearly as heavily as I normally would (no idea what I'm going to do with my WC, which is not like me at all). Anynoe else a bit fed up?

Its just been crazy. Every decision seems to be the wrong one, injuries, rested players, players blowing hot and cold all teh tie (step forward Elmander, Berbatov, Brunt, etc etc). The best policy seems to be to pick a team and then do sod all.

Very. Especially after having such a good time of it last season.

And to top it all off my mini-league rivals packed it in after only a few weeks, so I've been doing a lot more staring at my overall score.

We should do our own awards. Make up about 15 - 20 awards and just take a vote over a period of a week and at the end of the week announce the winners.

Just 5 at the moment. Varney, Torres, Konchesky, Adam, Vidic.

But I could be doing Drog > Berbatov so that'll make it 6, with another free transfer.

no to 2-5 pts a week ferguson.
no to "potential" Kolorov...you could be waiting until gwk 38 for his potential to shine.

Use the 1.2 to upgrade one of those. Adam/Barton instad of Ferguson perhaps
      Yes to the rest

Agree with Jonty on Kolarov and Ferguson, plus I would think about a cheap 2nd goalie, if you get Hart, not Foster, to free up value to use elsewhere. Then you will play Hart every week unless hurt.

Oh, I saw a WC request a few pages ago which included Myhill. I don't understand Myhill at 3.9, I am too much of a newbie to figure that out-- is he about to take over as number one at WB? Even Stockdale at 3.9 would be better IMHO. He plays a bit in the interim.

Quite a lot of people seem to be fans of rotating cheap keepers. Has anyone done a comparison to see if any home/away rotating keepers vs playing Foster every game so far?

My problem is that Foster doesn't seem to rotate great, but I don't want to drop him particularly.

Hart would clearly beat any rotation but I think I've missed the boat on that one with his cost.

Foster rotated pretty well with Harper/Krul early season, but I suspect those who rotated him with Jaask after the Krul rotation stopped working would have been better off with just playing Foster.

As for future rotations with Foster, Gordon works best (apart frmo Friedel who no-one seems to be into for obvious reasons) from GW28 to 36, but Camzy doesn't like Gordon so I don't imagine you'll go for it 🙂

        Ha, very amusing.

Yeah I was rotating him with Carson, that didn't work out too well.

I am considering Gordon, but I'm still not convinced the extra 0.5 or whatever is worth it over just playing Foster every week. Plus of course Camzy would not approve 🙂

It kind of depends on your defenders too though, and I'm not sure I can be bothered to plan in that much detail.

Well if you do decide you do want to rotate home/away it's Gordon or Friedel for my money, for what it's worth I certainly think it's worth 0.5.

Yeah just seen your keepers, it's obviously working for you.

I will have a closer look at their rotation. Someone was saying earlier that Home/away is not necessarily the way forward and it's more about oppo, which I tend to agree with.

My thinking is that I'll have my hands full making fixture/opponent related changes with my outfield players, with the keepers I prefer to just pick two decent defensive teams and rotate home and away for weeks, I'd rather not use up transfers trying to keep keepers on top of the fixtures.

Thanks, it'll all go tits up any day now.

At the moment I'm undecided on Kolarov, if he's going to regularly hold down that LB spot then yes, the other target I've got in that price range is Bosingwa but he's a similar rotation risk. Presumably with Zabaletta suspended (pending appeal) Kolarov will get a couple of games including home to Wolves, so I'll keep him in for now and re-assess before gw24.

Yeah, I'm starting to think he was too good to be true after all though. City defence is a pain in the ar*e.

Bosingwa is a punt too far I reckon. Rotation risk in a leaky defence. Could improve with Alex back though.

As a Baines owner I'm fully aware that I've got just two defender berths left for that week. If West Ham can recreate last night's match I predict three assists, clean sheet and 2 bonus pts for Leighton.

Barbatov > RVP, Etherington >Nasri, Barton > Adam
Then change the defence around a little, and cheaper goalkeepers.

But I would generally put more into my attack and less into defence.

    Wenger Tweet:

“It will be good to have Kieran back and Eboue will play as Sagna is suspended.

“I cannot give you the team yet. I have somewhere in my mind that I will make changes but I don’t know who will play.

“From last night, we have no serious injuries. I believe that Nasri and Van Persie could be short for Saturday. They have kicks - Van Persie on the hip and Nasri on the ankle. It is a question of days.

“They have a chance to recover in time. But [anyway] I will certainly rest Van Persie and maybe Nasri.”

Can I just say that it sucks having to wait a week for one game. We were spoiled over the Christmas!

It seems a lot of people are getting berbatov. He is actually my favourite player but i wouldnt touch him in fantasy terms. It is a fact, that an agreement has been made between himself and alex ferguson that he will often be dropped in favour of a one man up approach in certain matches. Why would you gamble on that?

      Nope.

Undeniably though, he's certainly had his moments this year.

Haha sorry stating it as an 'agreement' makes it sound official i should perhaps have said theyve 'came to an understanding' i cant find the exact quote but alex ferguson said in an interview in recent weeks words to this effect 'berbatov understands that for the good of the team he may have to be dropped in certain games and he accepts this' - not a quote just from my memory
