With Wildcards fluttering madly, the timing of the update to our Watchlist player rankings couldn’t be better. You’ll find our current thinking in your sidebar on the frontpage.

Arsenal’s forthcoming run of obliging opponents, coupled with a delicious double in Gameweek 27 is behind their boost to their assets this week. While Samir Nasri has strong coverage in squads across the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, now might be the time to contemplate further Gunners investment with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie and even Johan Djourou earning attention and high placings in our tables.

Joe Hart’s showing at the Emirates that helped to fetch Man City their twelfth clean sheet of the season did little to shake his position atop our Goalkeeper rankings. Hart and City don’t benefit from any double Gameweeks but his fixtures remain favourable enough to see him hold that position. Edwin Van der Sar with two double Gameweeks, is his nearest rival with Wigan’s Al-Habsi providing the most desirable budget option with three home games in the next four to come. Arsenal’s Lucasz Fabianski is back in the Gunners goal and in form with two consecutive clean sheets – his forthcoming opponents, including that kind double in Gameweek 27, appear to offer the potential for him to go on delivering value in the mid-price bracket.

Finding five defenders to recommend at this time is a major task. With Chelsea in continuous decline, Roberto Mancini rotating heavily and Liverpool looking alarmingly frail, the options are largely cut to low and mid-price selections.

United’s Rafael holds on to top spot as he continues to offer value in a relatively solid United backline that has two doubles on the horizon. The Brazilian should be protected from rotation given Gary Neville’s recent performance at West Brom, although John O’Shea (when fit) and Wes Brown could become factors.

Below the United man, Everton’s Seamus Coleman climbs with outstanding form – damaging his team-mate Leighton Baines’ appeal in the process. Coleman now looks to have cemented the right midfield role and provides superb value at 5.0 in the FPL. Wigan’s Antolin Alcaraz is perhaps a punt in our top five, but short-term fixtures and his Bonus Point potential has him climb to third spot. Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley has form but suffers a slight drop as fixtures toughen up. City’s Kolo Toure is now the only secure option within a strong City defence in the FPL and will remain so while Mancini continues to tinker with his full-backs.

Fulham’s Brede Hangeland and the emerging potential of Arsenal’s Johan Djourou are our highest new entries and offer value further down our rankings. There’s every indication that the Swiss defender is holding the centre-back spot in Arsene Wenger’s back four – if that continues at West Ham, expect a climb into our top five in preparation for Arsenal’s continued kind run.

The midfield rankings continue to be fairly settled. The big movement sees Charlie Adam climb into our top five, with Gareth Bale dropping to sixth. We’ve gone for both Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas for Arsenal’s spell which surely promises plenty of goals and assists for the pairing.

Below the big five you can find value in the mid-price with Kevin Nolan and Chris Brunt continuing to offer a degree of consistency. Brunt will enjoy a further climb if he can rediscover form to coincide with the Baggies attractive double home fixtures in Gameweek 27.

Controversially perhaps, Dimitar Berbatov holds on to the top ranking amongst the forwards, despite a recent decline. Wayne Rooney’s fitness is a big factor to the Bulgarian’s form and with him set to return to action this weekend, we would expect Berbatov to start firing again, just in time for United’s double Gameweeks.

Carlos Tevez doesn’t benefit from extra fixtures and subsequently drops to third with Fernando Torres perhaps needing a goal at Blackpool ahead of his three Anfield games in four. Robin Van Persie is the big climber – he presents the alternative for those looking to harness Arsenal’s potential. Although yet to blink on the radar, Van Persie has shown glimpses and has been influential since his return.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To change Berbatov to RvP and avoid the price rise or not? Such a tough question, that .1 is so pretty and wonderful but I do wish to keep Berbi in my team until after the double.

Do you think any of your mates/rivals have no idea about the 2nd WC, and so using it GW27 adds another benefit in that when they find out, it'll be too late? 😉

GW27 also offers the benefit of knowing more about the Carling Cup Final, transfer window has been firmly shut (and know which new signings are starting and how they are playing) plus, it's perfect time to bring in some GW27-28 DGW players in. The more I look at it, the more I see GW27 as the best time to WC.

German magazine 'kicker' is reporting that Bundesliga team TSG Hoffenheim are in negotiations to sign Ryan Babel. (Have they ever watched him?) The article claims that Liverpool are more inclined to let him move abroad than to join rivals such as Birmingham.

He's had double digit scores 3 times, but he's only had a full 90 minutes once, which makes him damned risky.
And when he hasn't had double-digit scores it's been weaksauce.

Only someone without a brain could throw a strop after playing so rubbishly, like he did against City. It was as if he genuinely thought he'd played well that day, and thought that he actually deserved to still be on the pitch.

Well he was dropped for the Everton and Valencia games for several reasons including form. Of course he will play if fit and ready, which he is because on his day he's a world beater.
I'm not sure why you have a problem with that.

In a similar vein. Do you think Wenger was right to bring RVP back at Blackburn when Chamakh was playing well? The game where he got injured.

Chamakh wasn't playing that well. He missed a shitload of chances against Blackpool.

Considering most people on here at the time were criticising Wenger for not bring RVP & Fabregas back earlier, I'm not sure how you can turn that one around.

I don't have a problem with Fergie playing Rooney when fit, i have a problem of people always comparing managers to Fergie and saying 'Fergie wouldn't do this' Like the guy in the article is doing.

Yes he probably was right because Van Persie had a few good cameo appearances and did get an assist before going off injured. Chamakh is also new to the Prem and probably did need a rest at some point.

SAF made no attempt to buy Torres from Atletico Madrid when he was available. He wouldn't drop him because he would never have bought him in the first place.

Torres is injury prone, lets his head drop when he or his team mates are playing badly, and does not put enough effort in. Over-rated.

By the way, you suggest that Fergie saw him as injury prone, I'm not sure how that's possible. His injury record in Spain was very good.

Rafa just kept rushing him back after injury at Liverpool, and it's taken it's toll.

I think SAF's view was that he would struggle with the physical nature of the Prem. OK, he hasn't struggled strength-wise (see Torres v Vidic), but he has been injured enough to suggest that maybe SAF was right.

I do rate Torres, but think that he is over-rated.

                    Torres 1530 minutes.

Yes, well, you've got me there 🙂 Given his fitness record, you would rather have Torres than Rooney at Arsenal? OK.

My main point was that Torres is far too injury-prone. Saying that when he's fit he's brilliant doesn't really matter, if he is not fully fit half the time.

Louie - how many of those 97 times was he fully fit, though? Apart from the season when Liverpool were so close to winning the title, I don't think he's had a big enough influence on their team.

I am a bit wary of the watchlist at the moment having brought in Salcido on the back of it a few weeks ago...he hasn't played since! Meanwhile, my watchlist-less rival brought in Aaron Hughes the same GW who promptly scored after 5 minutes and as played each game since picking up a couple of clean sheets along the way!!

Talking of Fabs+Nasri, with Nani, Adam, VDV as the 3 'must have' for the next 4 GWs, out of those, who else do you feel are good midfield purchases?

I'll throw a few more picks into the hat... NZogbia, Dempsey, Yaya Toure, Brunt.

    Discuss... 🙂

I'm guessing he's not protected anymore since he's been playing for a while now. Total FPL is sometimes lost with this protection thing. But the price rise is hard to predict because you can't know when the NTI has been reseted.

I'm trying to save the WC until after the next DGW. But I'm thinking of this post-WC team:

    Foster Begovic
    Coleman Samba Djourou ..... .....
    Nasri Fabregas Nani Adam VdV
    Tevez Carroll .....

Which players would you then have picked for the last 3 spots? With 20,3 in the bank. I want some City cover in defence (but difficult due to the rotation), but that is the only thing I have decided..

Yeah, I was wondering that too. My problem is that if if doesn't play I could be stuck with Foley.

I really don't think Hodgson will be there next week so Konchesky is pretty much irrelevant now as far as I'm concerned.

Foley, Cole and Hangeland are the only 3 nailed on defenders I have now and, clearly, Foley is not a reliable source of defensive points.

Cole will have to go too, but he appears to have a decent shot at a cleanie in GW23 and is nailed on so there's no point shifting him this week.

The question is whether I leave the defence till I wildcard and gamble that Kolarov will start next weekend or bugger up my long term plan to do 0 hits this week and then change Cashley to any def up to £5.6 (sadly not enough for Rafael) and do Nasri to Fabs?

It's not so much who's capable of scoring big, it's who's capable of scoring big on a regular basis. Because he's in a team with Cahill and Baines, and because they've been far more consistent, it would make more sense to captain them.

It sounds trite, but slow and steady wins the race.
It's generally better to try and get a good score than gamble wildly, because, as it's a long shot, by definition, if you hit it big one week, there will be 5 you didn't.

And that one gameweek when Coleman gets 20 points is not going to catch up to someone who has made safer choicess and averaged 8 points every week (before doubling) from their captain

            20, 2, 3, 3, 2 = 60 x2 = 60

            8, 8, 8, 8, 8 = 40 x2 = 80

I know I just see Coleman the better option. At he given time the three best Everton players to have are:

              Coleman
              Cahill
              Baines

I'm not including Arteta as he has been poor this season. Ok let's say that Everton have two home games that are both very winnable and good clean sheet prospects. I just feel that if Everton were to get 1 clean sheet, Coleman is much more likely to get attacking points than Baines considerign Coleman is basically a winger.

Is VdV to Nasri a stupid move until gw 27 when I will use my wildcard?

Will lose 0,3 m value in selling VdV now and bring him in for gw 27.

If Arsenal did have a good keeper what would you rate them defensively? I can't say for sure, but I still don't think it would make a massive different to clean sheets.

Even Vermaelen who everyone says is amazing, is always down the other end of the pitch.

Therefore, Arsenal defenders tend to be attacking, vulnerable on the break, and the best goalkeeper in the world can't be expected to deal single handedly with attacks like that.

Have I just made that up or do I have a point?
