Liverpool football club confirmed the inevitable this morning with the announcement that Roy Hodgson has left the club “by mutual consent” (why can’t we just say sacked?). The official word from Liverpool’s new owner John Henry is as follows…

“We are grateful for Roy’s efforts over the past six months, but both parties thought it in the best interests of the club that he stand down from his position as team manager. We wish him all the best for the future.”

The departure of Hodgson was becoming more a case of when and not if over recent weeks and months, the home loss to Wolves was seen as the final straw by many but the late home win against Bolton seemed to offer Hogdson another late reprieve. Days later Blackburn so resolutely trumped Liverpool on Wednesday by three goals to one that the writing was quite literally on the wall…

What this now means is that [many of] the Liverpool fans now get what they wanted back in the summer with the added announcement that Kenny Dalglish has been granted temporary charge of team affairs. Dalglish starts with the FA Cup trip to Old Trafford and will stay in charge through to the end of the season. Club chairman Tom Werner said…

“No one who cares for this great club has been happy with the way this season has unfolded and we have examined options and considered at length what is best for us going forward. Kenny will bring considerable experience to the position and provide management and leadership for the rest of the season.”

Fans and Fantasy Managers alike were getting frustrated with the tactics employed by the now incumbent manager so it will be interesting to track exactly how the Merseyside legend attempts to bring his club back from the brink, having not managed for the past decade the size of task on his hands must not be under-estimated.

In Fantasy Football terms, Liverpool have a decent run of games (EVE, wlv/FUL, STK, che, WIG) having been Frisked just days ago which, in combination with the impetus often following a new managerial appointment, may provide renewed vigour when it comes to investing in a Liverpool side that has disappointed more often than not to date. With the club in the midst of their own double-gameweek, and with an FA Cup tie to play tomorrow, managers will have time to assess how and if anything has clearly changed over these two games before we enter our next gameweek.

The picture of Liverpool’s defence will have many questions that need answering as the likes of Konchesky and Aurelio will be vying for their new managers favour and Daniel Agger hoping to get a smoother ride than he seemingly faced under Hodgson. The 12% of Fernando Torres owners and 10% of Steven Gerrard proprietors will be hoping King Kenny also adopts a more attacking formation last seen in the Benitez era which will be built around Liverpool’s two star players as opposed to the rugged 4-4-2 we have been seeing somewhat stifle them this season.

Those already on the Liverpool bandwagon hope the club will bring a spark with them to Blackpool on Wednesday to boost their first double-gameweek of the season; but for now, we wait, and watch.

Holden isn't strictly a holding midfielder, and neither is Diamé. I'd lap up a bit of Nigel De Jong though....

I slipped back into not rating Mikel once again... He showed so much promise at the start of the season, but he's been dire for a few months now. He's been at fault for a fair few goals recently.

Interested to see how Konch fairs in the shake up. Who will we ( Camoli the Clown) buy. Will Torres actually look bothered, what defence will Kenny play......? So many unanswered questions. Overall, the decision was inevitable so I support the owners. Attendances had dropped to an unsustainable level. Good luck at West Ham Woy.

Isn't the whole point of having a director of football (or whatever Comolli's official title is) that you pick the DoF first, and then he plays a massive part in choosing the new manager? Ideally getting someone will be able to work under a DoF. So the new manager will know the deal when he arrives and will presumably be happy with the situation.

Most the problems with DoFs come when their is already a manager there, and someone like Comolli then comes in and starts interfering.

Good signings, and I was probably being harsh, a little uninformed and listening to the press too much. He has made some terrible signings as well and always leaves under a bit of a cloud of blame. No smoke without fire. I suppose he did buy superstar Eboue and also Kolo. Although Wenger always gets credited with the Kolo buy and polishing that turd, so who knows.

So you're saying that just because Woy was in charge, Stevie G basically couldn't give a toss about winning games for the club he loves oh so dearly. But now Dalglish is back, Stevie's well up for it?! Nonsense.

There probably will be a short-term gain, as there usually is with a new manager. But the lack of quality in the squad will show once again.

Dagleish coming back bears all the same hallmarks as
the return of Howard Kendall, Malcolm Allison, Kevin Keegan to their respective clubs. It rarely works out.

                  Are you just reading wikipedia?

"Dalglish expressed his enforced departure as his only regret of his time on Tyneside, having hitherto rebuilt the reserve side scrapped by predecessor Keegan and signed a number of players, including Nolberto Solano, Gary Speed and Shay Given, who would remain fixtures of the team into the 2000s."

How is it relevant? Joe Royle won the FA Cup 15 years ago, but if a Premiership club employed him now I wouldn't think he would be a success.

How does Dalglish signing Gary Speed just before being sacked imply that he's going to do a good job at Liverpool, having done nothing more in the Premiership than punditry since then?

he may not do well, but it can't get worse than hodgson. if you were watching the tactics from roy you would know what i mean. i have to watch it week in week out and it's dire. those same players had a completely different approach under Rafa. its become like a game of ping pong 😀

In what way, that Shearer had never managed a single game before and Dalglish had won numerous trophies as a manager and has been a student of the game for decades already? There's a bit of a difference.

i don't think kenny is the long term answer, but he most certainly could get more out of the players than hodgson. remember this same team was not nearly as bad under rafa. hodgson has taken a poor mess from rafa and made it into a joke. i'm sure if roy did the same to your club you would be a bit sad. the football and tactics are some of the most woeful stuff i've ever seen.

Hodgson didn't mess Liverpool up, they were in a state when he got there. It's unfair to make him a scapegoat. Liverpool were hardly improving under Rafa, so it's not hard to imagine they'd have been just as bad.

he won the league 3 times with liverpool, twice runner up. he won it once with blackburn, and once runner up. he also finished runner up with newcastle. That's just the league, never mind all the FA Cup achievements.

He bought the league with Blackburn and managed the best squad in the league which had enough driven individuals to keep the ship moving.

He then left the team as it nose dived.
Moved to money blackburn won the league left and then made a disaster out of Newcastle and Celtic.

Everyone who isn't a Liverpool fan with their pro Roy stance is seriously mid-guided. It wasn't Rafa's team, it was Roy's, he was responsible for the team he chose to manage. Rafa's 7th place team wasn't great granted but no where near as bad as now. Only one major change, the manager. He sold Masch, probably forced to, and brought in crap. His transfer targets are Carlton Cole amongst others. He is a good guy and will do fine somewhere but this wasn't for him clearly. Attendances had dropped to an all time low and we cannot afford for that to continue. The owners hands were tied. Will Kenny achieve miracles? No. Will he be there long term? No. The rebuild begins again, with new owners who will choose their man. My cup is half full.

Masherano wanting to leave goin back a long way. Long b4 Roy came .
And so obviouisly the team is worse add to the fact none of your players are on form, torres doesnt care and is injured and Carragher is out.

So how again would the situation be any better than last year when you have a worse squad, off form players and injured experienced players?

And oh finally the other teams like Sunderland , Bolton , City , Spurs have all improved again.

And on Masherano again He left so late it gave Roy like over a week to find an available replacement with little money as he had no money from Hicks and Gillet and then the windowe closes

And 10 of the team midweek were "rafas team" which did well to finish 7th last season after loses to the likes of Reading, pompey etc.

Db, Blackburn bought the PL, Kenny managed the process. Same can be said for ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal. It took every team money, more money than most around them. It still takes a good manager to make it work. Or will you credit Fergie, Wenger, Mourinho and Ancelotti with buying the PL?

None of the managers you mentioned have bad records like Kenny does like at Newcastle and Celtic when the money pit was taken away

There are huge question marks over his ability.

Wenger , Ancelloti, Fergie and Mourinho all started at small clubs with no money and proved themselves able

Kenny was given the best job in the land with the best players.

Then he got the best job with the biggest kitty.

When he was finally given 2 jobs which needed work and didnt have the help he was accustomed to he failed so badly he has been out of work for over a decade.

Best job in the land? He was player manager, hardly a dream for anyone. The job of 2 men, he won the double that season.

Anyway Roy's bum bandit, King Kenny is temporary. So why go so in depth into questioning him. Irrelevant. He will be caretaker boss for 18 games.

By the way, if he does better with Rafa's team, does that make him a better manager than your boyfriend Roy?

db ronaldo, i can assure you if hodgson took over from fergie and started playing this ping pong football, you'd not want him there. the approach from the players has changed to a dire state. i can tell you the wolves, stoke, northampton, blackpool, blackburn managers would've much preferred having liverpools squad than their own. Roy has failed miserably, and the style of play is more worrying than the results. take a look at reinas distribution under 2 different managers. would you like united doing this?

Who gives a **** about honesty, it was a dishonarable thing to do on the field of play. My estimation of him has gone down loads now that I know 100% he's a diver. What's worse (for Arsenal) is that there's every chance a ref on hearing that will use it against him next time he goes tumbling in the box.

To be honest, I can't understand why he did it.... People had barely even mentioned the dive (apart from the razor sharp Jamsiep) and now his comments are just going to draw extra attention to the incident.

It's amusingly ironic how Walcott basically used the phrase that most Arsenal fans hate the most:

He's I'm not that sort of player!

    RM(WC)T, for GW24 onwards:

    Foster, Hart
    Hangeland, Coleman, Rafael, Dhojour, Bardsley
    VDV, Nani, Fabregas, Adam, N'Zogbia
    Rooney Carroll Tevez

Not particularly liking this new wildcard cause it is going to be tough to find any real differentials but this is the best i can come up with at the moment.

Ah you have to be honest in these things. They were very good, I'm just disappointed as I thought that the one thing we could do well with people like Smith, Barton etc is put up a fight (in terms of football, not actually a brawl - though I'd say I'd fancy Newcastle United to win a mortal combat Premier League tournament, imagine Walcott versus Andy Carroll round one)
