The return of Kenny Dalglish to top flight football was somewhat overshadowed by a couple of flashpoints and Howard Webb decisions that ultimately decided the outcome of the FA Cup Third Round‘s top billing match at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, it was business as usual, with only Leicester’s home draw against Man City coming close to replicating the Cup shocks of the previous day…

Dalglish made five changes from Roy Hodgson’s last Liverpool line-up, with a possible hint to his future thinking. Paul Konchesky- who suffered a dead leg against Blackburn and was unable for selection- and Sotirios Kyrgiakos were both replaced by Fabio Aurelio and Dan Agger respectively in the back four. Up front, Dalglish chose to select Fernando Torres as a lone striker, with Steven Gerrard playing in the hole behind. A 4-2-3-1 formation allowed Raul Meireles to return from injury and operate in his favoured central midfield position.

Gerrard’s straight red card for a needless two-footed challenge on Michael Carrick means he will miss the next three games for Liverpool, including this Wednesday’s trip to Blackpool, the Merseyside derby at Anfield and the first of the club’s double Gameweek 24, away to Wolves. He’ll be back just in time for a run that reads (FUL, STK, che, WIG, whm).

A knock kept Nemanja Vidic out of the Man United team, meaning Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans were the home team’s centre halves. Wayne Rooney was still unavailable, meaning Dimitar Berbatov was again partnered by Javier Hernandez up front. The Bulgarian won a somewhat disputed penalty 30 seconds into the game, allowing Ryan Giggs to score the game’s only goal, to ensure King Kenny’s return was an unhappy one.

Tottenham took to the field against Charlton with, arguably, just three first-teamers on the field (Michael Dawson, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Jermain Defoe) as Harry Redknapp gave this season’s star performers Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart well-earned rests. Left winger Andros Townsend had a debut to remember, grabbing the opener before Defoe’s double sealed a straightforward victory for the hosts. The match would seem to have little outcome on Tottenham’s next league outing when they host United at the Lane.

Carlo Ancelotti dropped Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda and Michael Essien to the bench for the visit of Ipswich, with Ashley Cole missing out completely. Frank Lampard showed the past few months of injury haven’t lessened his hunger for goals, grabbing a double in the holders’ 7-0 rout, as did Daniel Sturridge. The victory will no doubt be morale-boosting for Ancelotti’s side as they look to climb back into the Champions League placings over the next few weeks. It’s Blackburn at the Bridge next for Chelsea and you can expect the likes of Drogba, Malouda and Essien to return for that one.

Man City’s visit to Leicester saw a change of formation for Roberto Mancini’s side, as they lined up 4-4-2 to face old boss Sven Goran Erickson at the Walkers Stadium. Mancini made six changes from the side that drew at Arsenal, with Aleksander Kolarov and Jerome Boateng starting at full-back. James Milner began for the second consecutive game, scoring and assisting in the 2-2 draw. The likes of Patrick Vieira, Jo and Shaun Wright-Phillips got rare outings for the visitors, though the latter lasted only 45 minutes before being hauled off. None of that trio seem likely to make an impression on the teamsheet for City’s next league outing at home to Wolves.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        It isnt about Injury...

Whenever a Player flag changes[Yellow/red back to Grey] he becomes protected!

I think thats how it works

    Hi Guys,

I'm planning to WC in GW26 or DGW27. I can change from the current:

    -Reina -Carson
    Rafael Evatt -Vidic -Elmo -Kyrgiakos
    VdV Nani Nasri -Albrighton -Adam
    Tevez Drogba Carroll

to the new one with a great front seven + not so bad defence:

    FOSTER (KINGSON)
Rafael Evatt DJOUROU FOLEY DANN (->COLEMAN in GW30)
    VdV Nani Nasri FABREGAS FERGUSON
    Tevez Drogba Carroll

Which of the following you could advise:
    1. Good team, go for it.
    2. Sell Fabregas/Nasri and strengthen the defence (I actually liked the idea of having Vidic AND Rafael until the end of the season)
    3. Other ideas

    Opinions welcome.

Being away in India for 3 weeks over Christmas has really screwed me over! I've not been able to keep in touch, and despite making a couple of transfers when I managed to find an internet connection, I've fallen from the top of my mini league and slipped down from the 20,000s to the 70,000s. This brings with it an urge to knee jerk...

    1) So what's the deal on Kolarov? Is he dropped, rotated, what? Best to ditch? Looking at getting Coleman back in as it appears he's now first choice.
    2) Is Rafael really a guaranteed first teamer for the foreseeable future worthy of downgrading from Vidic for free up funds for to go from Brunt to Nasri (I have Fab...)?
    3) Djourou now first choice for Arsenal? Seems like I must get on him.

I can see my entire defence being revamped via a WC, I'm thinking Fabio Aurelio is likely to start ahead of Konchesky at Dalglish's Liverpool, but the DGW next week is a temptation for Skrtel.

There are some who get frustrated at him but if you look at our recent goals, he's played a part in a lot of them, i don't know what else they want from him. Hes done more then Rosicky, Denilson etc.. yet gets the flack for coming across as lazy.

He was playing pretty well at the beginning of the season. In fact in the first four or five games, I'd say he was your best player.

But since then he's been pretty poor in general, which is a shame because I've always liked him quite a lot.

Any thoughts, I'm thinking out outting Tevez as I think he might be rotation risk now. Oh and before you start on my pool players I think will improve in defense, maybe not attack, although Aurelio is on corners/free kicks.

I disagree I think if you have Foster you have one up on Hart owners value for money and all that.

One WC team did have Hart...but then I wanted fat frank so had to lose him. I've not played it yet, still toying with changes. The other team was:

        Hart Carson
        Coleman Huth Vidic Hangeland Djourou
        Nani Nasri Brunt VDV Adam
        Tevez Berbatov Varney

Just think Foster is better Value for money atm while having played two games less and has a double coming up.

Plus you save that money and use it for players you will actually captain I admit though worrying how hart is getting on is a pain in the ass but use the money wisely and I believe you have one up on those who go with Hart.

Thanks. I'd prefer to have Fabs or Fat Frank than Hart although the second team is perhaps more versatile over-all. Tough one.

Any wildcard team without Fabregas should be redone.

Look at changing Givet, Robinson, Campbell, Lampard and Nasri.

      You can do better.

          Don't like Malouda.

If you're going to get Hart, you might as well get Kingson or someone bargain basement because you'll want to play Hart every game.

Downgrade Malouda and get someone better than Campbell.

Much better looking than your original effort though.

In the 74 World Cup (I think, maybe 78), Cruyff wore two stripes on his Dutch shirt rather than the adidas three because of a conflict with his other sponsor.

His form in the last few weeks has actually been fairly good.

A double figure score could easily see him become the top scoring player in the game again.. The noobs can't look past that sort of thing. He'd be straight back into plenty sides...

Better to spread the risk I'd say, especially considering they play so many games in the next few weeks. There are good alternatives around.

You only really want 3 when they have their double gameweek.

Depends how much of a risk you want. Nasri is safer but owned by everyone. Could be a good time to get RvP, but I'm sure you're aware of all the potential pitfalls with him.

There are more reliable mids than forwards, so I'd choose RvP to open up a mid slot for someone else.

What do people think to my WC team? (I will do sometime after GW24 but before GW27):

    Foster - Gordon
    Rafael - Bardsley - Coleman - Dann - Djorou
    Fabregas - Nani - VDV - Brunt - Adam
    Drogba - Tevez - Carroll

I like the fact that I have got the "main man" from each of the top 5 sides (why have Nasri when you can have Fabs, same for Bale / VDV), two good mid-priced mids that I can rotate as necessary and change for similiar priced options to suit fixtures (NZog, Ethers and the like) and my defence is not reliant on players from the likes of Blackpool, Wigan, WBA or Wolves

    Thanks!

Foster - Begovic for a start. They rotate decently and it gives you options.

Doubling on Sunderland definitely not recommended considering their fixtures. Bramble or Bardsley if you must have some coverage. I'd just avoid them entirely. Get Fulham instead. They have good short-term fixtures, and have kept 2 clean sheets in their last 3 with a new defensive lineup.

Drogba you can do without until GW 28 and maybe even later. Get a ManUtd attacker instead.

Foster / Gordon also rotates very well if you ook at the fixtures, plus I would back Sunderland to get more clean sheets than Stoke (11-5 so far this season)

On Drogba - yes my actual WC team will probably include Van Persie and then change to Drogba in GW28 as you said (I put Drogba in the team quoted as VP would be a short term move only)

Still not convinced about Lampard but I am always nervous when I have not got Drog in my team!!
