The return of Kenny Dalglish to top flight football was somewhat overshadowed by a couple of flashpoints and Howard Webb decisions that ultimately decided the outcome of the FA Cup Third Round‘s top billing match at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, it was business as usual, with only Leicester’s home draw against Man City coming close to replicating the Cup shocks of the previous day…

Dalglish made five changes from Roy Hodgson’s last Liverpool line-up, with a possible hint to his future thinking. Paul Konchesky- who suffered a dead leg against Blackburn and was unable for selection- and Sotirios Kyrgiakos were both replaced by Fabio Aurelio and Dan Agger respectively in the back four. Up front, Dalglish chose to select Fernando Torres as a lone striker, with Steven Gerrard playing in the hole behind. A 4-2-3-1 formation allowed Raul Meireles to return from injury and operate in his favoured central midfield position.

Gerrard’s straight red card for a needless two-footed challenge on Michael Carrick means he will miss the next three games for Liverpool, including this Wednesday’s trip to Blackpool, the Merseyside derby at Anfield and the first of the club’s double Gameweek 24, away to Wolves. He’ll be back just in time for a run that reads (FUL, STK, che, WIG, whm).

A knock kept Nemanja Vidic out of the Man United team, meaning Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans were the home team’s centre halves. Wayne Rooney was still unavailable, meaning Dimitar Berbatov was again partnered by Javier Hernandez up front. The Bulgarian won a somewhat disputed penalty 30 seconds into the game, allowing Ryan Giggs to score the game’s only goal, to ensure King Kenny’s return was an unhappy one.

Tottenham took to the field against Charlton with, arguably, just three first-teamers on the field (Michael Dawson, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Jermain Defoe) as Harry Redknapp gave this season’s star performers Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart well-earned rests. Left winger Andros Townsend had a debut to remember, grabbing the opener before Defoe’s double sealed a straightforward victory for the hosts. The match would seem to have little outcome on Tottenham’s next league outing when they host United at the Lane.

Carlo Ancelotti dropped Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda and Michael Essien to the bench for the visit of Ipswich, with Ashley Cole missing out completely. Frank Lampard showed the past few months of injury haven’t lessened his hunger for goals, grabbing a double in the holders’ 7-0 rout, as did Daniel Sturridge. The victory will no doubt be morale-boosting for Ancelotti’s side as they look to climb back into the Champions League placings over the next few weeks. It’s Blackburn at the Bridge next for Chelsea and you can expect the likes of Drogba, Malouda and Essien to return for that one.

Man City’s visit to Leicester saw a change of formation for Roberto Mancini’s side, as they lined up 4-4-2 to face old boss Sven Goran Erickson at the Walkers Stadium. Mancini made six changes from the side that drew at Arsenal, with Aleksander Kolarov and Jerome Boateng starting at full-back. James Milner began for the second consecutive game, scoring and assisting in the 2-2 draw. The likes of Patrick Vieira, Jo and Shaun Wright-Phillips got rare outings for the visitors, though the latter lasted only 45 minutes before being hauled off. None of that trio seem likely to make an impression on the teamsheet for City’s next league outing at home to Wolves.

    Help me out guys:

    1. Hart + Zog + VanP (0.1 to spare)

    or

    2. Begovich + Lamps + DJC (0.5 to spare)

    It's gotta be 1. surely?

I'm sorry but this is utter rubbish. You can't know this and it's a little short sighted to think that ALL premier league games will get the strongest squad.

I'd be t alot of money that he will be rested for a PL game before too long.

I love Zog - great fixtures / bonus magnet / fresh after a rest
        and just dropped in price.
I need diffs hence VanP and Lamps in my thinking.
Begovich - agree entirely - was looking for a good DGW goalie for 27

Its basically a 'Brucie Bonus' anyway as in any other season you'd have to take points hits to do it and Fabs is pretty much a must have now.

They recently changed to a new back four and they've done really well.

      Pantsil, Baird, Hangeland, Hughes.

      I think they're fairly safe.

Biggest risk is Baird. Salcido had his place, but since they lost 3-1 at home to West Ham he's fallen out of favor.

I'd get Pantsil. Got a few bonus points, and at 4.5 is good value.

Salcido has been at fault for a lot of goals, and ever since Baird came into the side Fulham's has picked up. I think Baird is safe for the time being.

I've been messing around with it and I can get him and Fabregas into a reasonably strong side

                Begovic, Al-Habsi

                Bardsley, Simpson, Djourou, Rafael, Coleman

                Lampard, Fabregas, Nani, VdV, Barton

                Carroll, Berbatov, RVP

The main reason I'm thinking of him is that I really cant see any of the rivals above me in the mini-league getting him, so he could be a high potential diff in my league. I might change one of Berbatov or RVP for Dzeko if he is similarly priced.

I suppose, it's more the Lampard & Fabregas bit I'm thinking about rather than the full lineup, part of me thinks having those two will be a game saver for me, the other half of me thinks that I am playing last years game and I should spread the money around.
In the end I think I'll probably go with them, I have a couple of weeks to see how Lampard is doing after the injury which will help.

Yeah very similar to what I get if I go with Lamps.
Personally I like it - but it's balls out mate - you're flying by the seat of your pants with those goalies.
      Front 8 are brilliant though.
I've decided to pull back a bit and beef up my defence with Hart in goal. Swapping Lamps for Zog and Carroll for VanP.
Also have Hangeland instead of Dann for the next 4 or so weeks - better fixtures.

I thought the same about the keepers though I may give it a go - it should see me through till GW27 after which I can review the team as a whole again and maybe do Berbatov to Odemwingie (nice fixtures & double gw for wba) and upgrade the keeper.

Although that 0.6 will probably come in handy at some stage later on...

I wouldn't worry about playing Hart even in the hardest games, the 0-3 game against Arsenal is the only game against a 'top' side that they've conceded in all season.

Drogba dropped! Again. Damn I am loosing to much value recently (Konchesky), officially worried. I was contemplating WC only due to price drops. I know I will be furious when I will miss 0.1-0.2 like this GW for Nzog.

Price changes aside, lets talk Fabregas. wham, WIG are really "scary fixtures", going without him. I think he is best captain this GW. So what to do and I believe a lot of the lads are in same boat. Going with Nasri only, or Fabs is near to a huge point haul? Bring him now or leave it??? That will means N Zog has to bring the points in mean time. But captain dilemma is Huhhhhh!!!!!

    - have to get rid of torres before his double gw (actually replacement in my starting 11 would be nzog and he might not lose that many point for torres in that double gw after all? (captaining nani)).

Very good team.. How do Blackpool and Wigan's fixtures rotate? Because you'll have to bench either Adam or N'Zog most weeks, and if they their good fixtures coincide then you could have some problems.

      Good.

      I like it.

I don't think Evatt is worth the extra money though. I got him to catch a price rise. Intend to get Eardley instead.

Not so sure I like the goalies though. Can you afford Begovic?

From my experience its not good to have 3 expensive forwards. I know a lot of lads will disagree with me, but its up to you. I would prefer Rodalega or Carrol upfront instead of RVP. RVP can be added later on IMO. I like your midfield its a nice one, only Nasri is missing but so what. Defense: I would add WBA defender for last bench option cause of theirs fixtures and double in GW 27. Also I think I am gonna miss Gjorou cause I want attacking Arsenal spot.

Sorry that I am late I was ofline but hope you will read it and if I find u online I will remind u.

      My bad....

'You can play 2 transfer wildcards a season. One wildcard can be played at anytime, the other can only be used between Gameweeks 23 and 27. This extra wildcard will be available after the start of Gameweek 22 (4 Jan 19:30) up to the Gameweek 27 deadline (12 Feb 11:30). All transfers made in the Gameweek your wildcard is played will be without points deduction. You play your wild card when confirming transfers.'

Not sure how I missed that.

That's why you should have decent subs, and the risk of more than one player getting injured or dismissed that couldn't be cured by a simple transfer is unlikely.

I keep seeing these names in WC teams:

    Rafael, Coleman, Djourou, 2 x Blackpool/Newcastle cheapie

This is so short term it's unreal. What you have there is a recipe for 4 collective points from your defence when they're dropped without warning.

Buy a Hangeland, Toure, Vidic, etc. to go with the value picks so that you're not left with only 10 men playing one weekend.

(Oh, and it's a case of do as I say rather than as I do ;-))

I think Coleman has established himself, Rafael is looking more secure in the RB role for United leaving a cheap way in to their defence. Djourou fair enough but apparently Vermaelen has had another injury set back so a calculated risk, nothing wrong with a 3.9 nailed on starter.
Other than that you're bang on. 😉

I don't for a second think Rafael is secure. The swagger that kid walks around with having not yet achieved anything in the game is unbelievable. SAF is simply giving his O'Faithful O'Shea a holiday. Champions League fixtures will unsettle the best laid plans, and that goes for Djourou too. Wenger could easily bring in a centre half in the next couple of weeks (for selfish team reasons, I'm hoping it's Samba).

Coleman should be safe and he's been a star, but I always have a quick glance at Everton's team sheet in any case, so that suggests he's not as certain as I'd like him to be. Would be in my WC squad at this point in time without any doubt mind.

Coleman's returns are worth it even factoring in that he might have the odd game off. But Moyes has been hyping him lately and it's not like Everton have loads of players knockign on the door - he should be fine.

Rafael has been one of United's standout performers this season. Again, i'm not convinced he will start every game but with the money saved on him compared to Vidic i'll take that, i'm happy enough with my bench most weeks that i don't mind one player not starting

That's my point really Cocoon, I'm happy having 2 defenders that might be rotated, but 3, 4,..?

There's nothing more annoying as seeing one of your defender's team keep a clean sheet only for said defender not to be playing! More often than not, a rival will have paid the bucks for the regular starter.

I'm not saying they should be expensive, just have a reliable starter in with the bargain / form players.

See tosey's defence above, Dann, Bramble and Turner aren't expensive but they're all appear to be first teamers when fit.

I suppose it depends on how well you can use the additional funds. If Lampard starts scoring in the Prem then I can see many trying to shoe horn Frank, Cesc, Nani, VDV, Tevez and Berbatov into their WC teams.

I have just had seriously bad luck with the more expensive defenders this season starting when I took out Alex against arsenal between rotation and bad timing I have been hammered looking at the moment at

Taylor S, Crainey, Djourou, Alcaraz, Foley Total shite I know lol but at least anything I get is a bonus and my attacking players are fairly good all out attack from here on in methinks will upgrade one though when I give Rodallega or Torres the boot after their respected doubles.

When I look to bring in a stiker, I check to see who is up against Newcastle, Blackpool, Arsenal, Wigan and Wolves! 😉

It's not quite that bad but 12 to 18 points each week from you defence doesn't half make a difference when a striker or mid fails to produce.

lol I am the same but the one that broke the camels back was brining in Rafael to double up with Vidic last week and stoke scored their first goal at old trafford in 50 years and a close second was when I had Torres(c), the greek and the konk(I know two pool def) against Wolves a few weeks back and rivals had foley and he came off their bench time to have fun with the game now methinks before I lose the hair on my head.

True, it's been a funny ol'season. I dropped Foley last week for Aurelio thinking Wolves would lose by 2 or 3 🙂

Can't get greedy though, he's come of the bench a couple of times with the odd goal. Just have to play the percentages.

The first three are all solid at the moment.

Rafael has the United RB position. He's getting forward quite a lot, and to be honest, he's been good defensively too, so unless he goes on an absolutely terrible run of form, he looks fairly safe. 5.8 into the ManUtd defense is also too good to pass up.

He's also a good choice because there are loads of alternatives at a similar price point in case of emergency. Bosingwa, Kolarov, Skrtel floating around.

Coleman is out of position. For that alone, he should be considered. Add in the fact that he plays for an Everton team in good form and you've got yourself a bargain. He's also scored 3 goals in 4 games. Pretty much a must-have if he continues to start and there's no reason why he won't. Alternatives at that price include Dawson, Hughes and Dann, I wouldn't mind any of those.

Djourou is looking better and better every game. At 4.2, he's an absolute steal looking at Arsenal's run. Combined with their current CB injury crisis and his own decent form, there's no reason to think he will be dropped. He might even be first choice when all CBs are fit. At worse, you can always shift him for a Birmingham defender and get Fabianski in over Foster.

1 cheap defender is a given, and who better than Blackpool who have double gameweeks coming up?

I wasn't arguing the merits of picking each individual player, but having 3 or 4 of Rafael, Coleman, Djourou and Kolarov (everyone's love child until shock! horror! he missed a game), will lead to extra transfers later and run the risk of fielding less than 11 players one gameweek.

Nasty dilemma! Berbs against his former side.

The decision could be taken out of your hands if Fergie packs the midfield and plays Anderson in behind Rooney. He'll want to stifle the creativity of Modric and VDV. SAF would probably settle for a point at White Hart Lane given Spurs' form.

I've worried about this too, don't think many others still have their wildcard though!

Would be pretty dumb for them to have them as seperate things and use your default one first regardless. I imagine that it's a case of the two wildcard's aren't distinguished in any way, just that to use both, one must be used in january.

tosey RE Bir/Sun rotation i like it and will prob go

    foster/gordon
    dann/bardsely

GW28, 36 & 38 are iffy, but still decent rotation until the end of the season. good spot.

there r better rotations out there but these 2 teams keep cleanies often

i tried wolves bolton at start who had perfect rotation and u jus end up pisd off when they concede in a home banker

I'm happy with that, as bought foster for 4.5 and think gordon is one ofthe best keepers in britain.

Aye i got that for having knight for 4 GWs.

    Pantsil away to Wigan

Ask yourself the question 10 times and if you come up with the answer as Coleman, you really shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a computer to play FPL.
