The return of Kenny Dalglish to top flight football was somewhat overshadowed by a couple of flashpoints and Howard Webb decisions that ultimately decided the outcome of the FA Cup Third Round‘s top billing match at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, it was business as usual, with only Leicester’s home draw against Man City coming close to replicating the Cup shocks of the previous day…

Dalglish made five changes from Roy Hodgson’s last Liverpool line-up, with a possible hint to his future thinking. Paul Konchesky- who suffered a dead leg against Blackburn and was unable for selection- and Sotirios Kyrgiakos were both replaced by Fabio Aurelio and Dan Agger respectively in the back four. Up front, Dalglish chose to select Fernando Torres as a lone striker, with Steven Gerrard playing in the hole behind. A 4-2-3-1 formation allowed Raul Meireles to return from injury and operate in his favoured central midfield position.

Gerrard’s straight red card for a needless two-footed challenge on Michael Carrick means he will miss the next three games for Liverpool, including this Wednesday’s trip to Blackpool, the Merseyside derby at Anfield and the first of the club’s double Gameweek 24, away to Wolves. He’ll be back just in time for a run that reads (FUL, STK, che, WIG, whm).

A knock kept Nemanja Vidic out of the Man United team, meaning Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans were the home team’s centre halves. Wayne Rooney was still unavailable, meaning Dimitar Berbatov was again partnered by Javier Hernandez up front. The Bulgarian won a somewhat disputed penalty 30 seconds into the game, allowing Ryan Giggs to score the game’s only goal, to ensure King Kenny’s return was an unhappy one.

Tottenham took to the field against Charlton with, arguably, just three first-teamers on the field (Michael Dawson, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Jermain Defoe) as Harry Redknapp gave this season’s star performers Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart well-earned rests. Left winger Andros Townsend had a debut to remember, grabbing the opener before Defoe’s double sealed a straightforward victory for the hosts. The match would seem to have little outcome on Tottenham’s next league outing when they host United at the Lane.

Carlo Ancelotti dropped Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda and Michael Essien to the bench for the visit of Ipswich, with Ashley Cole missing out completely. Frank Lampard showed the past few months of injury haven’t lessened his hunger for goals, grabbing a double in the holders’ 7-0 rout, as did Daniel Sturridge. The victory will no doubt be morale-boosting for Ancelotti’s side as they look to climb back into the Champions League placings over the next few weeks. It’s Blackburn at the Bridge next for Chelsea and you can expect the likes of Drogba, Malouda and Essien to return for that one.

Man City’s visit to Leicester saw a change of formation for Roberto Mancini’s side, as they lined up 4-4-2 to face old boss Sven Goran Erickson at the Walkers Stadium. Mancini made six changes from the side that drew at Arsenal, with Aleksander Kolarov and Jerome Boateng starting at full-back. James Milner began for the second consecutive game, scoring and assisting in the 2-2 draw. The likes of Patrick Vieira, Jo and Shaun Wright-Phillips got rare outings for the visitors, though the latter lasted only 45 minutes before being hauled off. None of that trio seem likely to make an impression on the teamsheet for City’s next league outing at home to Wolves.

    WC team lads?

    Stockdale, Foster

    Rafael, Djouro, Simpson, SchawX, Hangeland

    VDV, Nani, Fabs, Lamps, Adam

    Odemwingi, Tevez, DJ

    or

    with

    Nasri, Nani, Lamps, Adam, Brunt

    Tevez, V Persie, Odemwingi

Hate not having Fabs, apart from that 2nd one looks much better? (defence and keeper the same)

I don't see the need for Lamps during this period. No dgw till 28, worse fixtures, worse form...much better off with Fabs.

Fixtures and form unfortunately don't agree with you.

You have to go Fabregas over Lampard.

If you can, try and get both!

If he wasn't a differential he'd be scoring well - so yes 😛 The problem is do you want him before or after he stops being a differential.

But to be honest, I'd rather have Cesc/some low budget striker than Nasri/RvP in option B. That gets you both Lampard and Cesc. That's if you back Lampard to come right.

This Gerrard Red has put a big spanner in my plans.

Who is the best replacement for him over the next 3-4 GWs?

Currently thinking Lampard as a decent differential - either that or Nasri.

Already have Fabregas, Nani, VDV, Adam in midfield.

The Coleman debate is an interesting one. For what it's worth, even if he is no longer first choice right midfield if (and it's a big if) all the other options are available to Moyes, I find it hard to believe Hibbett will keep him out of the team at right-back - and he'd still be good value as a defender.

Phil Neville is also our captain, so I don't see Coleman usurping him at RB, unless of course he moves to MF which he has done on occasion - it's pretty packed there at the moment, and Fellaini is doing well at DM.

I find the debate quite typical of this site. There always seems to be someone stirring up something about how someone is going to be rested or rotated. That someone usually WANTS the player to be rotated more than there is real substance to it.

I had Coleman, and in the 4 games that I had him, he only started twice, and played for 64 mins in one of those games... I am talking about personal experience and opinion. He is in great form atm. BUT for me, if he has one bad game, and Moyes has the whole squad available to him, then he MAY find himself on the bench for a couple of games. I didn't mean to offend anyone...

Apart from when you called dbronaldo retarded lol.

Personally, I don't think Coleman will get rotated now that he's really starting to break through. There's normally one of these players per season that come in around mid-season, play very well and hold their place. Last season it was Bale, the season before it was Baines.

I can see a lot of similarities with Coleman this season, and while there is a risk of rotation, by not getting him, you're risking missing out on a potential goldmine.

I don't see where this Coleman rotation talk is coming from either. Since he was rested 6 games ago he's played 90 minutes 5 times and 75 minutes the other time (the Man City game, that was clearly a tactical sub). He's one of the top wingers in the Prem at the minute. This from a player that Moyes must have meant to introduce gradually into the team - he got his chance through injuries and took it.

Of course, if he starts playing crap, then he could be dropped. Same goes for nearly every player!

Let me explain. On his form he won't lose his place. Number one:- Neville and Hibbert were both injured at some stage, enter Coleman. Fellaini was out for half the season, Enter Coleman, Arteta was banned for 3 games when Fellaini came back, Enter Coleman, Cahill was out injured for 2 weeks, enter Coleman, Pienaar was injured, enter Coleman. Cahill at Asia cup for a month, enter Coleman. Osman been out a long time too. IF he loses FORM, and the others are all fully fit, it is quite possible and is my OPINION that he may miss 3/4 games. I like him, I had him before (1 90 game in 4), I hope he doesn't get rotated.

I'm with you on this one, Jono. While Coleman is playing out of his skin Moyes will continue to play him RM, but he's by no means sure of his starting position. (By that I mean I don't think Moyes considers him a first choice regular.)

you would be transferrring out 1 rotation risk for another at this stage. Might be worth holding onto Kolarov for now and changing him in your WC, we might know Mancini first choice back 4 a bit better by then. K Toure is the best option if u want to transfer right now...

Pondering the use of the WC this week after a few poor gameweeks. With the players I want to bring in I will most likely have to press the button before tonights price changes.

    Just looking for opinions........

    Midfield plan is...

Lamps, Nani, Bale, Adam and either Nasri or Fabs

    Forward plan is...

Tevez, Carroll and either Drogs or Berbatov

The dilema I face is that depending on my choice I can have Fabs/Berbatov with 0.1m in bank or Nasri/Drogba with 0.6m in bank.

The extra 0.5m could be used to upgrade the defence.

    Any thoughts welcome ???

        I'm not even religous. lol

I do need to take a risk as I'm having to make up some ground in a couple of leagues that I want to do well in (money-related of course)

I reckon Lamps could be a risk that could pay off bigtime especially if Chelsea are to start getting back into the title race. I would keep Drogba over Berbs if the funds were not an issue but trying to get in Lamps, Fabs and VDV to join up with Nani along with holding onto Tevez is proving to be a financial mystery that I'm struggling to solve.

I have downgraded at the back but still have some decent players. If I cut back any more it would be foolish I my behalf.

Should be a fun day attempting to balance the books before the deadline.

Kolarov was just the same at Lazio - slow, very weak defensively, and lacking accuracy with his many crosses and shots. Always looked as though he would deliver more than he did and would be more suited to a midfield or wingback role.

Actually Kolarov's free kicks have been absolutely woeful. Corners not much better. Just like many other good players (Rooney, Torres, RVP - the list is long) he seems to be suffering from not having a proper pre season because of the World Cup.

All that being said I have no idea how Mancini will use him, I just think he's been shit every single time I've watched him for City.

Mancini clearly won't give up on him though..

It all depends on what approach Mancini takes with him. Either he keeps playing him so he can adapt to the PL faster, if so he'd presumably play Wolves.

Or Mancini will take him out of the firing line for a bit, letting Zabaleta - who is on excellent form - play in the process.

I fear it will be the latter.

              Exactly.

My knowledge on Mancini and City is far too small to really know what will happen, but my guess would be the latter.

I'll keep him if I don't wildcard though, maybe he'll get lucky with one of his shots sooner rather than later.

If I wildcard I'm looking to double up on City's defence though, with Hart and Toure.

=> out for 4 weeks but so cheap he could stay on my bench unless you think there is a although I need some exposure to Man City defense, I am getting increasingly pissed off by him. He played in FA Cup. Is it worth giving him another shot?
    4/ Konchesky
=> do you think he will play under Kenny? Did not play against Man U. Maybe the Blackpool game will provide more light on Kenny's options.

Do you think it worth spending 4 pts on either 2/ 3/ or 4/ this week?

Personally I think Aurelio is a far better option at LB at Konchesky, so find it very hard to see Konchesky starting many games for the rest of the season, other than in Europe

What are the best defending options right now? Hangeland, Djourou, Coleman?

As Aurelio has only just returned from injury I can see konchesky starting this one if he has got over the injury that kept him out of the squad at the weekend – but long term I see Aurelio at LB (even though he is arguably a player that can provide something in left midfield, which is a real area of weakness in the Liverpool team)

          Yes, yes and yes

Konch is my transfer out this week. He probably won't play v Blackpool, and that's annoying. If Kenny had arrived a week earlier and booted him off the team before Blackburn, I'd have had MGP off the bench for 5.

Any South African cricket fans around ?

What do you think of Francois du Plessis?

Good provincial cricketer, but untested internationally. Has been around some time in the domestic scene and a little up and down - currently in great form though. I have my doubts about his international credentials. Mainly a powerful batsman (at 4/5), bowls part time leggies and will get hammered by good international batsmen.

Get Djourou in there over Fabianski - who you can drop to al'Habsi or another cheap gk - Foster is a great pick most gw's anyway.

Also try get Bardsley or Bramble for Crainey, Sunderland are much better defensively. Something like:
      Foster/al'Habsi
      Djourou/Coleman/Rafael/Bardsley/Simpson

          Possibly

But I'd play Foster over Fabianski nearly every gameweek, so you're wasting budget there. And Djourou offers good Arsenal coverage and with Bardsley you have decent cover if Djourou doesn't play.

I think you would then still have the budget to do Djourou -> Hangeland if he stops playing

If you have the budget - go for it 🙂

But if you start Coleman/Rafael/Djourou - you're leaving a 5.6 defender on the bench, that's wasted budget.

                  Blackpool can't defend.

I'd only get Hangeland if I intended starting him every gameweek.

Your latest post is good, but it depends how you intend using Hangeland, if he's a starter with Djourou on the bench - fine. If not then you're better off with a cheaper option.

Upgrade RvP - Drogba comes into the fold.

Foster -> Hart is another defensive option you could take.

        huh?

Most people plan their WC's, so if your current plan has no spare budget - in 2 weeks you're likely to be short once prices rise.

So your interpretation of the message is that he wants to know how much of his current value he should keep aside while planning a team now? That makes some sense, but I didn't understand that from the initial post!

Far simpler to just make a team on your current budget and make changes later if necessary. If you're WCing in GW25 you'll change your mind 20 times before then anyway. That's why I say it's overthinking things.

True, but I think there are key players you want, and if you're unsure about price rises you may play your WC early.

I assume he has a team for the DGW in 24 that he wants out of with the WC. WC then could be screwed if all prices rise, now to decide whether to lose GW24 team to get preferred long-term team 🙂

Okay that was my understanding too, so my 1st answer stands. With Gerrard out and protection ending I'm sure Fabregas will go up 0.1 or 0.2 on his own by then, good Lampard performance could do likewise.

I'm unsure now if they mean they are doing a transfer before GW25 and want to have money left over before they play WC, or if they want to know how much money to leave spare when they play the WC for future transfers in the weeks after.

Bad thing about wildcarding later is that all the players you will want for GW27 are going to be more expensive by then.

I don’t understand - it doesn’t matter as when you’re wildcarding as you can then select any player at any price that fits the total money you have available

thats my point. if i've already planned for the players i want to get with the budget i have, i don't want to think of alternatives and change my team just because i can't afford them in the future.

Obviously it will inevitably happen, so my team that i want for gw 25, i want to plan it now but leave a little spare for potential risers.

        You guys follow ?

As a question of interest - what would it change?

Different team and then everyone here is correct in saying its a pointless question.

Or is it an earlier WC. You are gambling either way then.

How on earth is it a pointless question ? :s

you still don't understand what i'm asking do you?

I'm asking how much spare money should i leave in my wc plan for gw 25, so that when i execute my gw 25 wc plan, i will still be able to get all the players i want, even if 1 or 2 have gone up in that time, because i had change in the bank when i planned it.

No one can tell you, Demi. If you want Coleman, Lampard and Fab, then you'll get them regardless. It would just mean downgrading elsewhere in a player you don't want as much.

Leaving money spare will only help you in your head, as you have no way of knowing if you're leaving too much or not enough.

Might go for Al-Habsi to go alongside Foster instead of Begovic. They rotate probably just as good as Foster does with Begovic and Al-Habsi has a double next week.. Begovic does have a double GW27 but I'd play Foster over him anyway.

anyone else looking at gwk 25 for a few last minute punts? utd home to villa may well see hernandez start and well know the utd team by the deadline, tempted to keep 2 freebies back for that week

also we'll know if rvp is starting for arsenal too

could be worth saving transfers for that especially if you're wildcarding after that gwk like i plan to

Or worth wildcarding that week as GW24 will be most likely to see some big price rising depending on performaces.

Why are most people choosing Bardsley over Elmo? Is it simply for the price? Isn't elmo still playing OOP?

Elmo is the Inspector Clouseau of the PL. No one can figure out how he does it and it defies all logic but he gets great results.

Elmo is a rotation risk, I think he's playing at RB while the entire Sunderland defence is in the physioroom.

so this is what i've come up with for my wc

    gw 25:

    hart/foster

    coleman/rafael/carr(dann)/bardsley/tamas or Djourou

    nani/nasri/yaya/vdv/brunt

    rooney/Odemwingie/tevez

heavy on the west brom for the double game week on gw 27
also plan to swap nani for fabregas just for the double game week
and Odemwingie will be swapped for carroll eventually

I'm in the same boat - bought Foster at 4.5 at the beginning of the season, got Hart in while I had 4.5 burning a hole in my pocket, can't bring myself to get rid of Foster now...

Don't like the Nani to Fabs swap. Get them both in your team since you want them all season.

i'll consider dropping foster for a budget keeper.

and i'm not sure i want both fabs and nani all season. I've taken a gamble and decided not to rely on fabs, since most my rivals have him. I've done well so far capitalizing on some key differentials. I'll definitely be thinking about it though.

      thanks for the help

I get the feeling you're spending too much on bench defenders (Huth and Hangeland? - Djourou is more likely to start in your team than the others - scroll up for all my views on this).

I think i'll rather have the defenders benched than the money just sitting in the bank, lots of fixtures coming up and some players would get injured so the plan is to have a good bench in every game
