Scout Picks

With the FA Cup weekend a distant memory, it’s time for Premier League managers to calm the rotation, restore the big guns and get back down to business. The Scout Picks follows suit as another Gameweek rolls into view for the Friday evening treatment…

The Defence

Joe Hart
The City keeper presents an awfully expensive option but, along with Kolo Toure, the most secure route if you’re looking to hoover up City clean sheets. With Wolves at Eastlands this weekend, Hart looks good for yet another shut-out and with a lack of security elsewhere in Roberto Mancini’s back four, duly gets the nod in the Picks.

Jose Bosingwa
The Chelsea back four is far from a sure bet when it comes to defensive returns these days, but Bosingwa is relatively cheap, looks certain to play and presents a significant threat going forward on the right flank. A Stamford Bridge encounter with Blackburn promises returns at one end, if not two.

Roger Johnson
While Liam Ridgewell has emerged as a more potent goal threat, the stats show that Johnson has had more efforts on goal and is overdue further attacking returns. He’s also more prominent when it comes to Fantasy Premier League Bonus and against a Villa side lacking both Emile Heskey and Ashley Young, he could well emerge with a shut-out and Bonus this weekend.

Robert Huth
The big Stoke defender has proven his attacking threat at set-pieces with handsome goal returns this season. Huth will get a workout against the muscular Bolton attack, but that could see him stand out and capture some Bonus Points. Plenty of potential for returns at both ends then.

Antolin Alcaraz
A gamble given the likely return of Moussa Dembele to the visiting Fulham attack, Alcaraz is nonetheless the dominant figure in the Wigan defence and has every chance of returning Bonus with or without a home cleanie for Roberto Martinez’ side.

The Midfield

Chris Brunt
While Blackpool will turn up at the Hawthorns with the influential Charlie Adam in midfield, the Baggies have Brunt to orchestrate matters for them and he could well come out on top in a game that promises goals. Brunt’s delivery from open play and set-pieces will be a feature and if the Baggies can pull off a result, he could deny Adam yet more Bonus returns. With Roberto Di Matteo handing him the captaincy today, we must just see the Irishman rise to the occasion.

Samir Nasri
The Nasri vs Cesc Fabregas debate rages on and it could well be time to consider drafting both into our lineups to solve the issue. For now Nasri will suffice for the Picks as Arsenal travel to Upton Park to face a West Ham side which will battle but should concede at least a couple to the fluid Arsenal attack. Both Nasri and Fabregas could well be in the points but, with the Frenchman’s price considerably kinder, it makes sense to bank on him to inflict the damage and boost his goal tally further.

Nani
The United winger remains the key Fantasy midfielder as he continues to demonstrate a consistent level of scoring that belies his early career at Old Trafford. The clash with Spurs at White Hart Lane could well see goals with the home side possessing plenty to test Alex Ferguson’s rearguard. The visitors may need at least a couple to come away with something and that will surely mean that Nani will again be amongst the points.

Charlie Adam
While it’s a risk throwing in two players from the same match, Adam’s form is so strong, his case for inclusion is overwhelming. The battle with Brunt for superiority in midfield should be a fascinating one and I’m tipping both to emerge from the weekend clash with returns. Adam has peppered the opponent’s goal over the last two Gameweeks and he is well overdue a return for such attacking intent.

The Forwards

Carlos Tevez
Even with the introduction of Eric Dzeko as a unknown variable, Tevez looks an irresistible option at home to a Wolves defence that will surely grant him ample opportunities to fetch further Fantasy returns.

Fernando Torres
Kenny’s big hope with Steven Gerrard suspended, Torres will go into the Merseyside derby having scored his first goal under Dalglish at Blackpool in midweek. Back at Anfield, Torres promises to be an even bigger threat and with our Members’ statistics showing an impressive goal threat over his last three matches, Torres looks good for returns against an Everton defence that will be without the influential Phil Jagielka.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sharing my team for the weekend:

    Hart (Harper)
    Kolarov Coleman Skrtel
    Adam Nani VDV Nasri Barton
    Tevez(c) Torres

    Bench: Rafael, Simpson, Welbeck.

Since Kolarov was rested the last game I am hoping he gets at least some game time this week so I'm playing him. I know we're all waiting and probably getting tired of Kolarov, and especially having Hart now I doubt he will will remain for my WC. Let's hope he proves me wrong this week.

I think the bench order for at least the first two is a much of muchness. I don't think NEW or MAN UTD will keep clean sheets and having both Skrtel and Coleman playing might mean I lose points, so I'm hoping for Coleman goal/assist to at least even that out somewhat. I got Hart in this week for the season.

My only question is regarding Skrtel, would anyone play Rafael ahead of him or would you agree with me?

Agreed. First thing that struck me as odd as well. Play wellbeck, if he's not fit chances are he won't even play 5 mins and you can have Barton come in for him if you like.

What is the minimum amount of transfers one would make using a wilcard?
At the moment I am leaving a midfield of Bale - VDV - Nani - Adam -Nasri and also keeping Boswinga, Coleman, Evatt, Rafael and Berba.
Bringing in Hart, Gordon, Elmo, Sturridge and Tevez.

    Silly?

Barring injuries I may only be changing 3 players when I use mine. No point making changes for the sake of making changes. Then again if I have a bad week I might have 15 newbies on Monday.

Djourou/Alcaraz/Hughes - or keep Konchesky till next week and have Jara as first DEF sub if he doesnt play (Hutton would be last sub)

I went with Skrtel in the end (I think Liverpools fixtures are way better than Wigans, and arguably much better than Fulhams). If I didn't have the extra for Skrtel I would have chanced Kelly, Dalglish picked him out individually for praise today - he SHOULD [note not definitely] be good to start.

G'wan Catmac. To be honest I can see why Liverpool defenders are persona non grata in most peoples team but looking at their relative fixtures I think they have a chance to reverse their fortunes a bit.
Kelly has been one of the few decent players and has started the last two, I honestly expect him to start the derby. I have nothing a 100% nailed on to base that on only judgement and Dalglish praising him today.

thanks guys. I've got arguments for Kelly, Hughes and Alcaraz - none for Djourou though which is quite odd seeing the number of RMT posts he's been in.

I'm going to sleep on it, but sorry Katie I think it's a toss up between Hughes and Kelly. It's the fixtures that are swaying me but I may live to regret it. πŸ™‚

Any of the 3 you mentioned would be fine.

Alcaraz and Hughes give you a DGW next week, but one of Wigans games will be against Arsenal.

If you don't have any Fulham defenders then I'd say go for Hughes as his DGW fixtures next week (STK, Liv) look the most favourable in terms of potential cleanies.

I'm thinking of an early (or earlier than planned) WC to get rid - but then I also have Konch, Carroll, Carson, Odem, Drogba and Kolarov who may or may not start (at least three of them definitely won't) - so it makes my decision a little easier.

Everyone looks good on youtube though. I think it's certainly not a terrible gamble, but it is a gamble nonetheless. While Tevez is about it seems to be a gamble not worth taking imo. I'm gonna wait a few weeks and if he does well i'm seriously considering doubling up on him and Tevez.

Will want to see how he does in England and where he fits in first though.

Tevez should win on gametime over RVP.

Look at RVP's last few weeks, he has been used sparingly. Wenger has also said he will only use him sparingly. I think Wenger will use him in he big games but rotate him with Chamakh alot of the time too.

I'd need a few weeks more to convince me he will play enough to have him. I know it's contrary to popular opinion on here but it makes sense

Forgot to mention this is short term with my WC still to play. He was rested in the Cup so I'm sure I can get 1 or 2 good games out of him before all Arsenal's weekend/midweek games in a row begin.

Like you say I want to wait and see what happens at City.

I know it's an early gamble but i'd go Walker personally.

Said it before but him going out on loan only makes sense if he is going to play games and get experience. He did well at QPR (was first choice), they really wanted to get him back but couldn't get him. For spurs to loan him to villa over QPR where he was basically guaranteed gametime i think it's fair to assume Villa offered some assurances that he would play regularly.

Well Walker is considered the better of the two Kyle's by everyone i have spoken too and i've seen alot of Kyle Naughton recently (Leicester season ticket holder).

Naughton is absolutely quality, gets down the wing loads, always on the overlap whipping balls in and breaking into the box. In fairness i've not seen much of Walker but i'm led to believe he is very similar in style, but better - which sounds awesome to me.

For 4m i'm planning on WC'ing him in as my cheapie

The guy is the real deal, I have seen him play in the bundesliga. People say Balotelli had awesome potential but hasn't lived up to it,well Balotelli has "potential", Dzeko has the "talent".
