It is being reported that Sunderland striker Darren Bent is the subject of a bid from Aston Villa, believed to be around £18 million which could later rise to £24 million. It was also reported that the England international has handed in a transfer request and is keen to finalise a move away from the North East club – Sunderland have now confirmed the written request. Bent has been with the Black Cats for 18 months after joining from Tottenham and has scored 36 goals in 62 games.

The proposed move seems a bizarre one at first glance, with Sunderland performing above all expectations and sitting pretty in the Premier League in sixth. This will probably not change too much as far as Bent’s Fantasy potential is concerned; it could be argued that a switch to Villa, who are currently underachieving in 17th, is a move sideways rather than forward. But if the striker’s attitude towards life at the Stadium of Light is in question, perhaps new pastures will see him rediscover the kind of form which saw him fire 24 league goals last term and see him emerge as a major Fantasy consideration.

The move would certainly have an impact on Asamoah Gyan who, until somebody else is brought in, will surely play a more prominent role for Steve Bruce’s side. With guaranteed game time, Gyan, the scorer of Sunderland’s equaliser against Newcastle on Sunday, looks a more attractive option at 6.9m in the FPL and an ownership of 2.8%.

This news of Bent’s possible transfer is just breaking. We can only wait for further developments on what could be the most significant switch between two Premier League clubs in the January window.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Let's open out the discussion a bit. My main wildcard dilemma is one that other people have also raised in different forms - are there more points to be gained by investing in your third striker or in a high-priced midfielder?

In my case, using both sides of the paper and showing all calculations in full, is the best long-term option:

    a) Nasri & RvP
    b) Fabregas & Rodallega (=> Carroll, when fit)?

tried to do both (see below) by having cheapie defense and 1 v cheap midfielder (which is fine i think as can't play all mid/forwards anyway)

I'd say RVP is about to start showing returns. And I'm not saying that because of the weekend, I said it before (captained him in the Sky game).

Looking at his fixtures, it looks good for him. Confidence is high, and I'd guess he does better against weaker teams, where Fabregas would be more useful to unlock difficult defences.

Fabregas could do good, but with a lack of big budget in-form strikers, I'd expect a VP bandwagon.

views on WC team? Also with GW27/ long-term in mind

    Stockdale/Al Habsi

Rafael Djourou Kelly Coleman Murphy(or Carr)
    Fabs VdV Adam Nani Cleverley
    Tevez Berbs Torres

Then Torres>RVP soon, freeing up bit of money to upgrade defense (and transfer out Stockdale when Schwarzer back)

Appreciate this might be a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' kind of a comment but does anyone know how likely it is that RVP will start the next league game against Wigan?
Just a little skeptical as Arsenal play Leeds in the FA Cup before then.
Thinking of doing Varney - RVP for a 4 point hit.

    Yay or nay?

MF what do u think are the chances or RVP getting rested in the league when the champions league gets going again? Surely RVP will be on the bench for a favourable league and Chamahk will play when the Barca game is round the corner?

The FA Cup rounds are immediately after the Barca games, so unless Arsenal draw someone like United or Stratford Hotspur, he'll be rested for those, rather than league games.

Wenger usually rotates after CL games, so those could easily be the ones he misses out on.

Exactly. Should we get really, really, really lucky and somehow scrape through, things might change.

It all depends on injuries and how far we get in other competitions.

I'd expect him to be rested against Leeds (who I still assume are a really dirty side, although they probably haven't been since the 70s), and to play against Wigan.

I've said so many times on here that i'm (as yet) unconvinced RVP will start all league games as people are saying.

Pretty sure Wenger wants silverware this year and is taking both cups seriously. Starting Chamakh over RVP should still leave them with enough to beat Wigan - i wouldn't be surprised if he plays his strongest team against Leeds, but that's not to say i think it will happen.

It's so hard to call but it feels like there is an element of people believing what they want to believe when they say with conviction that RVP will start every league game and be rested in every cup game.

Have two frees and want to bring in DGW defenders, deciding between:

    A. Vidic + Walker
    B. Any two of Hangeland/Skrtel/Alcaraz

Exact same as mine bar Fabregas for me is Nasri, I am benching Nasri, would be alot harder if it was Fabregas, alot of people having this dilemma and exact same front 7-8.

Wigan have not been blown away recently, but it is the Emirates, tough one, I would probably rest Campbell over Fabs, because it just looks all wrong to have him benched at home to Wigan, also, how often have people been blinded by the bright flashing lights of "DGW"'s, only for single GW folk to easily outscore them

I know, obviously not going to bench Fabs, it would be suicide.

Think I'm just going to play VdV and get rid of Campbell, he's good value but I'll be benching him most weeks having Adam aswel and Odemwingie has nice fixtures with a nice double GW27..

wow genuinely shocked by this darren bent news. completely out of the blue.i think 18mil is the peak any team should pay for him and that's still pushing it, he doesn't bring enough to the party other than his goals to justify a higher price imo.

"Birmingham have revealed that financial reasons are behind their decision not to pursue a deal for Tottenham striker Robbie Keane"

Why would he still be demanding ridiculous wages given his record now?

Surely he's not exactly short after the amount of transfers and signing on fee's he must have had on top of obscene wages?!

did pretty well at Rangers or whatever.
I'd have left him there for a bit.

Harry's a propper hardass though, can't believe he'd let keane go for 4m. especially with Bent being 24m.

It just doesn't make sense. Look at Torres and RVP.

He was a decent enough player once. Just hasn't really settled anywhere.

Darren Bent could smash that record the way he's going though. £4mil + £16 mil + £12mil + £24 mil. Robbie Keane in his pomp was better than Bent.

Although the Spurs/Liverpool transfers don't count as full fees as the first was never paid off before the second happened.

Aye, it was a complete punt. I was convinced Lampard would run up a cricket score against Blackburn. He did, but unfortunately it was an Australian one 🙁

          Chelsea were very poor again.
And it looks like the arrival of Dzeko will help Tevez's fantasy returns rather than hinder them. I think I will get rid of Lamps this week, together with Dzeko, and bring in a couple of doublers. Kneejerker!

    Rooney Torres Berbatov

Good. A week of not watching the little scrote mouth off at referees, wave imaginary cards and tackle like Paul Scholes' demented little brother.

Obvioulsy thought about doing both, but taking 4 pt hits are like going to sausage parties on a friday night.

Anyone care to talk me into my first 4 pt hit in ages?

I just don't see N'Zogbia/Dempsey scoring 7 more points than Brunt/Barton. and 7 more would be a wash

Gah. Really want to get Gyan in now, but I'd have to sell Rafael for a 4.1m defender.

I'm hearing Alan Smith has broken his ankle, pretty much ensuring he is out for the rest of the season.
I may question his talent, but fair play to the lad he WALKED off the pitch under his own steam, not many of todays jessie players would have done that!

Who's Alan Smith? Former Leeds United talisman up front, broken by Man Utd and forced to become a ball winning midfielder then flogged to Newcastle when he became shit? Also suffered some horrendous injuries? That Alan Smith?
        He was good once.

Too dumb to realise it was broken? If brains were taxed, he'd get a refund.

Broke my ankle three times playing rugby. The second time, I was fair f*cking screaming for the ambulance. They had me pumped full of morphine before they even left the field.

Being a northern lad I would have run it off after a little rub of the magic sponge.
I would have then had a few pints of best bitter, a hotpot, a quick methodical rut with the wife (no pleasure on either side mind) and took the whippet for a walk.
If I happened to bump into the Doc I might ask him if the duct-tape needs changing but I reckon its grand. Probably supposed to sniff like that.

🙂 Put it this way - the ambulance guy took one look and threw up. His mate said: "Lucky you were wearing two pairs of socks."

              Stoopid bloody game, rugby.

Same ankle he did at Utd? When the Liverpool 'fans' were trying to roll over the ambulance that was taking him to hospital.
