Steve Bruce failed to avenge his October St James’ Park thrashing, Man United kept up their unbeaten league season and Kenny Dalglish continued his win-less start to his second stint as Liverpool boss in a day where all four Premier League matches failed to produce a single victor…..

Nedum Onouha recovered from a hamstring injury to take his place in the Sunderland back four again, though Lee Cattermole and Danny Welbeck remain sidelined for the Black Cats. Steve Bruce’s side were poor throughout and only a late Asamoah Gyan goal prevented bitter rivals Newcastle from doing the double over them this season. Elmohamady was fielded in right midfield and picked up 2 Bonus Points, his first such award since game week 9.

With Andy Carroll still out injured, Alan Pardew welcomed back Shola Ameobi and the forward grabbed an assist for Kevin Nolan’s cheeky opener in the Tyne Wear derby. Proving they can perform without midfield warrior Cheik Tiote, Newcastle were perhaps unlucky to hold out for a win, though Nolan’s Fantasy Owners will no doubt be delighted with a 10 point return from the Toon skipper.

Alex McLeish showed his faith in David Bentley by giving the on-loan Spurs man a place in Birmingham’s starting XI for the visit of Aston Villa. An injury to Cameron Jerome saw Matt Derbyshire line up as the lone forward for McLeish’s side, as Nikola Zigic warmed the bench yet again. Seb Larsson, linked with an imminent move away from St Andrews, missed out through an ongoing groin and hip injury.

David Murphy came in at left-back and Liam Ridgewell moved to centre half as Big Eck confirmed Scott Dann will probably miss the rest of the season with a serious hamstring problem. Murphy grabbed the assist for Roger Johnson’s goal as the hosts took the lead through a scrappy free-kick. Johnson also picked up 2 FPL Bonus Points for his toils.

Ashley Young’s one-match suspension allowed John Carew a rare chance up front for Gerard Houllier’s side. Kyle Walker continued to impress at right-back, with plenty of surging runs and dangerous balls into the box delivered from the flank. His partnership with Marc Albrighton down the Villa right looks promising for Houllier. Having struck the bar three times in the first half, Villa also had a centre half to thank for their solitary goal, with James Collins (who also got the maximum 3 Bonus Points) firing home to deny to Birmingham a win, unsurprisingly following a cross from the right.

Martin Kelly has now started in all three games at right-back since Kenny Dalglish’s return to Anfield, with Glen Johnson filling in at left-back, despite the availabilty of Fabio Aurelio. Paul Konchesky didn’t even make the bench, suggesting his first-team opportunities are likely to be few and far between under the new regime. A stomach illness saw Daniel Agger taken off at half-time to be replaced by Sotirios Kyrgiakos in the Reds’ back four.

Steven Gerrard’s suspension meant Dirk Kuyt was on spot kick duties and the Dutchman obliged, with the vital equaliser in the 2-2 Merseyside derby draw. In addition to the penalty, Kuyt’s assist for Raul Meireles’ opener was enough to grab him the 3 Bonus Points, with Meireles being awarded 2. Fernando Torres looked lively up front, particularly in the first half, a factor that will please his Fantasy Owners ahead of the upcoming double game week. His six goal attempts were equalled only by Hugo Rodallega and James Morrison all weekend.

An impressive performance in the heart of the Everton defence saw Sylvian Distin also grab the equaliser for David Moyes’ side as they fought back superbly after a poor first half showing. Jermaine Beckford grabbed only his third goal of the season to put the visitors ahead but Moyes was denied a famous win as Tim Howard conceded a penalty for Liverpool to make it 2-2. Howard had a great game overall, though, making nine saves to repel the Liverpool attack time and again.

Having suffered defensively for the majority of the season, Spurs chalked up their third consecutive clean sheet at White Hart Lane. There’s no coincidence that this is down to the return from injury of Michael Dawson, as Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded one in four home games since his comeback. Redknapp chose to field Peter Crouch as a lone striker for the visit of Man United, throwing Jermain Defoe on when United were reduced to ten men after Rafael’s red card. Luka Modric once again picked up the three Bonus Points and had been awarded 14 (3 X 4, 2 X 1) in Spurs last five home games.

Nemanja Vidic was a rock at the back for United, as their unbeaten run was extended to 21 games. United rarely threatened going forward, with Nani being withdrawn just after the hour mark following an anonymous performance at right wing. Rafael’s two yellow cards mean he will now miss the first of United’s matches in the upcoming double game week, at home to Birmingham. United are unable to appeal a red card for two yellow card offences under FA rules. There’s also reports suggesting that the FA will look into Rafael’s actions as he left the pitch following the dismissal with possible discplinary action taken. Other articles this morning state that the FA will overlook this if the events are not included in referee Mike Dean’s report.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

          🙂

          I'm sure they're great!

It's a great deal of business to them, although they probably don't know it yet. They have a perfectly able replacement for him in Gyan and they'll be able to strengthen elsewhere when the opportunity arises.

It's an incredible deal for Sunderland! They've easily looked at their best this season with Gyan and Welbeck playing up front together, and trying to accommodate all 3 players into the side hasn't worked at all.

I just wonder if this transfer means that Welbeck may end up permanently being a Sunderland player.

great deal for sunderland i reckon. They badly need a midfield leader, a couple of them. Gyan is as good as Bent i reckon. 18 million could buy some fantastic midfield talent, which they need much more than Bent right now

Yeah but with Dann out for the long-haul their defence might be a bit dodgy and with their lack of goals I'm not sure who would be worth bringing though. Triple game week is very tempting though.

Bentley looked fantastic now brum against Villa.

Also they only lost their clean sheet against Villa due to a deflected shot, not bad defending or goalkeeping.

Looking at playing my WC in GW26/27 and keen to get at least 2 Arsenal players in but massively concerned with rotation over this fixture period...

    12th Feb - Wolves (Home)
    16th Feb - Barca (Home)
    22nd Feb - Stoke (Home)
    26th Feb - Spurs (Away)

With both the Wolves and Stoke games just 4 days each prior to MASSIVE games for Arsenal is anyone else a little concerned that the likes of Fabs, Nasri and RVP may start these 'easy' home games against Wolves and Stoke on the bench and only given game time if the likes of Arshavin, Rosicky, Chamakh etc. are struggling to do the business or alternatively start the game but brought off early at 2-0 after 'the job is done'.

Bearing this in mind which 2/3 Arsenal players are least likely to be rested for the Stoke and Wolves games?

No responses? I think this is a very good point, although it is difficult to take it seriously coming from The Duck of Doom 🙂

I think the best bet is to second guess what Wenger thinks is his strongest side and assume he'll field this against Barcelona. I think he'll want to play key players against Wolves with a view to taking them off earlier, but I suppose we can expect a reserve team against Stoke. Hmmm.

    Afternoon!

Please feel free to query my sanity over the following transfers for the Double GW this weekend.

Tevez and Carroll out for Berbatov and Agbonlahor. For one week only mind.

Not sure if Tevez will have two, great weeks consecutively and Carroll coming back from injury are the factors I'm swaying towards taking a punt.

    Please help!! : )

    Dear Gerard Houllier

Seeing as you're in the mood to lash out crazy cash on pretty average at best strikers, let me bring to your attention a certain Xisco. Haha no he is not some kind of DJ or exotic dancer, he is an extremely average (some say below average) striker expertly scouted by footballs favourite midget Dennis Wise! Bet that has you salivating, and if you want a player of the calibre of Salif Daio to relive your glory days look no further than yorkshire pudding Alan Smith.

You can have them both, and while it's you I'll even add £10m to the asking price so you don't have to carry all that heavy cash around with you. Always a shrewd dealer you Gerard!

God knows why? I really do worry about the state of education! 😕
Wellesley 1815 refers to Britain's greatest soldier and all round good chap Sir Arthur Wellesley and the 1815 bit refers to his tw@tting of the Frenchies at Waterloo.
Couldn't think of anything else at the time and so went with that.

Wellesley1815. If you ask Greg when you see him he'll add you to the FFScout XI. (Provided you are not a striker as gloryhounds Akers and Greg have already snaffled those positions). You can be a right back, we only have a slow Glen Johnson there at the moment 🙂

If Bent goes to Villa, I'll definitely be considering Gyan. And Welbeck.

I dare say it, this transfer window is actually starting to liven up a bit. Was a complete no-show last year.

To WC or not to WC that is the question.

My plan to have lots of DGWers this week through natural means has imploded spectacularly - Gerrard, Konch, Rafael all not playing both games, leaves me with just DJ, Adam and Nani.

Plus I also have Drogba and Kolarov.

Was going to wait till GW26, but Arsenal fixture logjam is making loading up on Arsenal players that week a bit more risky. And the plum DGWers in GW27 (Everton and Arsenal) have got good fixtures this week too, so why not just get them in now anyway?

Yes, talked myself into it. Any feedback?
