A night of FA Cup replays saw the Premier League second-string get another run-out. When Man City are involved however, there’s no such thing as fringe players, as Mancini rotated riches to re-establish David Silva’s marriage with Carlos Tevez to devastating effect; a plucky Leicester City the latest to come out worst in another goal-strewn Eastlands encounter…

Roberto Mancini suggested that he’d make changes to his City lineup for the replay with Leicester and so it proved. Kolo Toure, Nigel De Jong, Edin Dzeko, and Gareth Barry all dropped out for this one with Joleon Lescott, James Milner, David Silva, and Patrick Vieira all handed starts. Interestingly, Mancini left his full-backs untouched as both Pablo Zabaleta and Aleksandar Kolarov held their starting roles – that might suggest that the Italian has now decided on this pairing as his first choice – the lineup for the Villa game should reveal more on that.

David Silva made a return to the starting lineup then after earning a recall to the bench in Saturday’s win over Wolves. Silva showed his class in the first-half with a pinpoint pass to feed Adam Johnson; the England man duly dispatched City’s second from 18-yards to send a further message to his manager but, in truth, Johnson should have notched further goals and made a bigger statement. Silva meanwhile ended the game with two assists and looks assured for a starting role at Villa.

Carlos Tevez started then when perhaps this seemed a timely occasion to hand him a rest. The City skipper didn’t take long to show his qualities however, blasting home a rasping volley to give the home side the lead on 15 minutes. The night then took a twist for Tevez as he conspired to miss his second consecutive penalty after the break. Tevez also fluffed from 12-yards in the recent win over Blackpool and there’s now every possibility that he could surrender spot-kick duties in the league. A slight concern for buoyant Tevez owners.

Kolarov delivered the goal he has been threatening in the league by sealing City’s win with a 20-yard effort late on. His owners will hope that that strike will be enough to cement his start for the trip to Villa Park, although it must be considered that, with Villa’s wide men such a threat, Mancini may opt for Micah Richards or Jerome Boateng at right-back, with the reliable Zabaleta switching to the left.

Indeed, Mancini spent much of his post-match analysis picking apart his team’s defending, suggesting that he will surely shake-up his back four again at Villa.

“It’s great – but only for the supporters! I’d enjoy it if we scored four goals and did not concede any, but every time it’s two goals, three goals. We must improve…If you keep conceding in each game, you will get to the moment when you don’t score enough to win. Because of this, we have to improve.”

Wolves’ 5-0 demolition in front of a paltry 10,000 at Molineux provided some respite from their Premeir League struggles. Mick McCarthy was able to welcome back Jody Craddock and Karl Henry following lengthy injury lay-offs, they came into the starting lineup at the expense of Christophe Berra and Nenad Milijas. The changes didn’t end there as Marcus Hahnemann replaced Wayne Hennessey in goal, while Steven Mouyokolo and Geoffrey Mujangi Bia came in for Stephen Ward and Matt Jarvis; Mouyokolo took up a role at left-back. McCarthy will likely shuffle again for the home clash with Liverpool this weekend – Henry and Craddock will be expected to keep their starting roles which may well see Berra or Richard Stearman at the back, and Milijas in midfield, miss out.

Wolves will face Stoke City in the fourth round – they came through their replay with Cardiff with the aid of extra-time. Jonathan Walters grabbed both the goals for Tony Pulis’ men.

The Stoke boss made no less than 10 changes to the side that inflicted defeat on Bolton at the Britannia. The inclusion of Mamady Sidibe on the bench was perhaps the most notable – Pulis is a big fan of the lofty striker and we can expect him to figure in league matches over the next month. Ironically, the only player who retained his starting role – Danny Higginbotham, picked up an injury and was forced off on 10 minutes – he will be a doubt for the trip to Fulham with Danny Collins likely to return to the league lineup if he fails to make it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

A villa fan on here the other day said hes first choice defender altogether not just first choice right back. I think that was an overstatement but id say it does mean hes going to start. If youre trying to save money with a cheapo though getting murphy from birmingham would be my recommendation

Maybe shuffle pack to have terry or ivanovic instead of djourou and get nasri instead of walcott if you still cant get fabs. You may aswell just have foster and myhill as your keepers. Foster has a possible triple gameweek coming up and is pretty much fixture proof anyway so that allows you to have the cheapest possible starting keeper in myhill to raise a bit more cash

Ive heard hes going to play for sure. Its interesting you mention a cheap defender because i was just having a better look at your team and i think you should have at least one minimum price player in there to raise money elsewhere. I nearly always play three at the back and im going to have murphy from birmingham, simpson from newcastle and myhill from west brom. All cost 3.9 allowing more money for my big players. This is just my personal tactic however, alot of people like to have an even spread of cash throughout their team

Honestly you'll get nothing but frustration out of walcott. Wenger just has something against the poor lad im sure. He scores two games in a row then gets dropped without explanation season after season. Its like the bermuda triangle or girls, i dont think anyone will ever figure it out

yea i know as a gooner its fustrating, hes trying to please all his players, walcott always looks out of play though don't you think, he has the potential to be similar to Henry with his runs behind the defence which hes showed with some of his goals

Yeah totally, i personally dont think he could equal the footballing god that is thierry henry but he could definitely be similar. An in form walcott is fantastic, literally unstoppable. I think we need to get a petition going telling wenger to stop being so protective with his players.

To be honest i don't think any of them would score particularly well (bearing in mind the 4point hit). I'd probably play Bardsley and take the likelihood of a two pointer - that one isn't gonna make or break your gameweek either way i don't think, so in those kinda situations i'd never bother taking a hit.

would you keep konch in the starting lineup regardless then, bardsley 1st defender sub? even if konch doesnt start 1st game, could start home to fulham instead of bardsley away to blackpool, slim chance of konch getting subbed on, and even so, it would be likely a 1 point difference if Bardsley gets the expected 2.

The only worry is if Bardsley pops up with a goal or an assist (or the unlikely clean sheet). I suppose there is risk either way so i'd probably do as you say and start Konch.

Really can't decide who to bench out of:

    Nani|VDV|Dempsey|Adam|MGP
    Tevez|Rooney|Varney

Obviously not going to bench any of the DGW players and I'd say it's a pretty tight race between the rest. Leaning towards MGP but WBA at home could generate a few points.

    Any thoughts?

it all boils down to, who do you think will score more points, MGP or VDV? toite is banned and carrol a doubt newcastle are lacking, toite been key to breaking up the chances, although they may struggle against a better playing side....MGP, well inconsistent imo

I'm trying not to get overly seduced by DGW players. It seems to me that Nasri (or Fabs or RVP) might be a better transfer in this week than the more punt-ish DGW players (kuyt, hangeland, dempsey etc). What do you think?

Yes. I bought Salcido a few weeks ago with this double gameweek in mind but he has not kicked a ball since after being seemingly made a scapegoat by Sparky. Great transfer that turned out to be! Haven’t had a chance to rid myself of him yet either.

What's the best combination for Man U and Birmingham cover? I’ll probably have Murphy as a fifth defender in each case.

    Foster + Begovic + Rafael = 14.7

    Van der Sar + 3.9 keeper + Carr = 14.6

I’m leaning towards the second option as Rafael might get rotated (and is banned for a game!) and I can always pick Myhill as a keeper and hope he plays the double in week 27 and Villa at home in week 35 when Man are at Arsenal. Other than that I’d pay VdS all the way.

On the flip side Rafael should got more attacking points than Carr and Foster more save points so option one seems riskier (rotation) but if it works should/might score more points.

Anyone got any thinking on which is the best way forward?

For a club of their size, I think that's the best policy. Kuszak is 29 in March and according to good old wikipedia has made 60 first team appearances in his entire career. That's not good enough.

gota be B with hangeland, you dont want to tie your money down in a defender

thanks for your input, it's 1-2 to b then...still not convinced though. Main problem actually is that I find really hard to drop one of tevez, torres, berba and rvp.
Would be tevez, but would lose too much so there's no point in that.

I just wish this season ends...
