A decidedly dull encounter at Anfield saw Liverpool grind out another three points and continue their mini-resurgence with a 1-0 victory over a battling Fulham. Elsewhere, the Carling Cup proved far more eventful, as Birmingham City edged out West Ham in extra time to progress to the final and hand us Fantasy Managers new fixture conundrums to unravel.

Liverpool’s win was their second victory in the space of five days, propelling them up to 7th in the Premier League and leaving them targeting a previously unimaginable European spot. In Fantasy terms many of their assets are slowly edging back onto our radars as possible differentials, although the blank for Fernando Torres will have bitterly disappointed his hopeful owners.

Kenny Dalglish employed a 4-5-1 with Torres supported on the flanks by Max Rodriquez on the left and Dirk Kuyt on the right, the returning Steven Gerrard worked in tandem with Raul Meireles; both seemed to play the box-to-box central midfield role and generally took control of the halfway line with neither afraid to attack. Christian Poulsen, who was in for the injured Lucas Leiva, played deeper protecting the back four.

Having failed to keep a clean sheet for 6 Premier League games, Liverpool have now earned consecutive shut-outs. With Martin Kelly, seemingly, a nailed-on starter, the right-back’s 4.3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation is now looking immensely attractive. Kelly was again impressive and continues to draw plaudits while Glen Johnson has looked effective enough at left-back.

Raul Meireles has become a Bonus Point darling in recent weeks; the Portuguese International picked up another maximum last night, giving him 8 over the last three fixtures. In Gameweek 24 he picked up a total of 19 FPL points, notching a goal and an assist at Wolves. With just 1.6% ownership and a price of 6.8, he remains a realistic candidate for our watchlists.

Fulham continue to be a difficult outfit to break down and have conceded just 3 goals in their last 6 league outings, earning them 3 clean sheets in the process. Investment in their back four needs to be carefully considered however; with a couple of tricky games on the horizon (NEW, avl, CHE, mcy, BLA, Eve) they will find it hard to maintain their current run of defensive form. David Stockdale, priced at 3.9 in the FPL has proved an excellent short-term prospect between the sticks; it will be interesting to see if Mark Schwarzer can reclaim his place once he has returned from the Asian Cup.

For all their gritty defensive form, Fulham are still finding goals hard to come by. Moussa Dembele remains an interesting prospect however. The Belgian was awarded 2 bonus points last night as his influence on Fulham’s attacking play remains strong. If he can start to muster goals and assists, he certainly has the potential to be a decent option in the budget bracket as an FPL bench forward. Again however, Fulham’s tough run of opponents has to be considered.

Over in the Carling Cup, Alex McLeish made wholesale changes to his midfield with Alexander Hleb and Keith Fahey dropped and David Bentley cup-tied, in came Lee Bowyer, Craig Gardner and Sebastian Larsson. The 3-1 victory saw Bowyer and Gardner both claim goals, whilst Larsson also impressed. Following the disappointing 5-0 loss to Manchester United, McLeish may choose to keep his cup heroes in his starting XI for the FA Cup tie with Coventry.

Despite our Birmingham triple Gameweek hopes being dashed by their progress to the Carling Final, Birmingham’s key assets should still be looked at as potential point grabbers for their double home fixtures in Gameweek 27. As we stated in our earlier article, Birmingham follow this up with a blank fixture in Gameweek 28 and then another double in Gameweek 29.

Gardner and Larsson both started and impressed last night and they could be cheap FPL options, although McLeish continues to rotate in midfield areas and, right now, there appears little security on offer. Defensive targets, with Roger Johnson perhaps the key figure having scored two goals over recent matches, look to be more solid considerations.

On that front, the selection of Martin Jiranek at centre-back, allowing Liam Ridgewell to move to left-back, meant that David Murphy dropped to the bench. We were lining Murphy up as a potential bargain over the rest of the season given that he was earning starts following the season-long injury to Scott Dann; Murphy is priced at just 3.9 in the FPL. However, Jiranek was singled out for praise by McLeish and could now hold his starting role.

“We felt that Martin deserved his chance. Maybe I’ve been too cautious not giving him more playing time. I thought he was magnificent tonight.”

You can pick up the Czech for 4.5 in the FPL but the uncertainty surrounding his starts and those of Murphy, will likely discourage investment; hardly desirable as we approach Birmingham’s double Gameweek.

It's weird the lack of FFS members cup talk, I'm looking forward to it as long as I qualify this time! Should be a bit different to the others where anyone can sign up and enter, probably means it will be tougher too with only the hardcore entering it.

    Foster, Begovic,
    Rafael, Bardsley, Coleman, Djourou, Kelly
Fabregas, Nani, Van der Vaart, Etherington, Adam
    Tevez, Berbatov, Van Persie

Found a way round without getting rid of tevez,
    downgrade VDS to Harper/Begovic
    do Zabaleta to Rafael
    and Nasri to Fab.

Gives me 0.3 left in bank and a team of:

    Repost from previous article...

After doing the WC last GW I was planning to do no transfers. But I have been keeping Carroll (yeah – rookie mistake) and seeing the news that he out for probably quite a bit longer now with still no definitive return, I think I will be forced to bring in Odemwingie in. Correct thinking?
(and yes - I finally linked my team)

I'd had Carroll since the start, and I sold him last week. This latest news on his injury means he's got to go. After a long lay-off he might take a couple of games to get his full fitness and sharpness back.

Yeah - that is what I am thinking. I was hoping he'd be back for the DGW - but the recent news was the final straw. Should have done it in the WC, but better late than never. I would have got Bent if I had enough money in the bank, so Odemwingie has to be it I think.

    robinson ; foster
    rafael ; djorou ; kelly ; walker ; coleman
    dempsey ; nani ; vdv ; adam ; fabs
    rooney ; rvp; carroll

carroll-> odemwingie already made yesterday gw25

I’m thinking about making the following moves:

    a)
    gw25 rooney-> tevez -4
    gw26 dempsey-> cahill walker-> murphy (needed to make the dempsey->cahill move) -4
    gw27 adam -> brunt (if i have the funds by then… i need +0,1)

    b)
    gw25 no more moves
    gw26 dempsey- cahill
    gw27 cahill-brunt
gw29 brunt – cahill adam- furguson

    A. i get an 8 point hit, but i get tevez which could be a diferential, because I think it has some nice fixtures, and could do some good scores. and I get murphy who seems to be more probable to play all games rather than walker, who I still didn’t understand what happened.

    B. I get no points hit, but don’t get much of a diferential.

is it silly to plan with such advance???i would appreciate some aadvice

The generic WC teams are very interesting indeed. Many with no Chelsea coverage, little (if any) man City defensive coverage.Arsenal attacking coverage and far too much emphasis on high-priced attackers in RVP, Berbs, Tevez et al.
The cost to the health of fantasy managers could be emmense as teams need adopting to a more balanced team.

The other thing that strikes me is the cheap defenders in which there are a few that you can say are very possibly prone to rotation in Djourou, Kelly, Walker, Rafeal et al.

          Just my thoughts.

Hey man, appreciate your response and understand your point. how would you say I could better balance my team?

I agree that my team is very imbalanced towards the attack, but that's because I feel winning points is based much more on the individual in midfield and attack, whereas defence is more of a team thing.

What I mean is, a defender could be a very average, or even bad player, but if the other defenders (who may cost much more) play well enough, he'll still get 4 points for a clean sheet, regardless. However, if a midfielder or a striker gets nothing if he underperforms.

This is why I'm inclined to spend most of my money on proven, albeit expensive, point-scorers in midfield and striker, and settle for lesser defenders who can still be carried to points by their team. I'm not saying it's the right approach, just trying to justify my side of the debate!

ok to add something different to the generic ffs wc team, heres my planned team for next week if carrolls fit

    foster/gomes
    carr/johnson/baines/dawson/bramble
    vdv/etherington/barton/cahill/fabregas
    bent/tevez/carroll

spurs have kept 3 cleanies in a row at home since dawson returned and they rotate perfectly with birmingham apart from gwk28

Problem is you can only want to play foster or gomes for the double – and then have no keeper the next week (also both of spurs DGW fixtures are away)

spurs arsenal will probably be rescheduled for midweek when utd play chelsea so itll fall within gwk28 if it doesnt ill rethink

for the double gwk27 id play foster carr johnson and dawson

Not bad, I'm really Surprised by the lack of love for Young around, I honestly feel Villa will kick on, he basically plays up front, on all set pieces, super fixtures. He's in my WC team for sure.

I'm thinking of WC again around 30 when's their a shift in fixtures a bit again and Dawson will definatly be on watchlist then, they have some great fixtures towards the end of the season and of always back them at home.

Bloody Crainey is a millstone around my neck. He has done sweet FA for me since I got him, so much for putting faith in stats! 😉
Anyway I was going to take Bale out for Walcott (I think Bale is due a drop in price and with my wildcard yet to be played I need every 0.1). As a little straw poll what do people consider the best option to be:

    a) Just take Crainey out (I need to replace him to field a defence)
    b) Bale out Walcott in today to beat the price drop
    c) Take both Crainey AND Bale out to beat the price drop at 4 point loss and beating price rise of Crainey's replacement.
    d) Wait until the last moment, possibly losing cash on both Bale and Crainey.

Well I suppose but it is an incredibly ropey defence, but seeing as its been incredibly ropey all season it wouldnt be much different:

            Jaask
            Knight, Rafael, Skrtel.

Doubling on Bolton at home to Wolves. Risky but not 4 point riskworthy maybe.

Well I'm wildcarding before Gw27 so Bale is out either way and I'm reasonably pleased to let him go. Don't fancy him AND VdV anymore. I'm pretty pleased with my prospective lineup, still tweaking here and there though, but happy it is quite different (though not disturbingly different) to most RMWCT's I've seen lately.

Makes it easier to get likes of Cahill for me later on maybe for VDV.

      4. bale to walcott, bale has dodgy back and Arry will be keen to give Pienaar a try on left, also 2 CL games for them so not nailed on to start even if fit. walcott rot risk too but he usually plays him at home to open up poorer teams.

Plus away they not as free scoring, plus away games after CL games have been a real hurdle even for united in the days of Ronaldo, tevez, roons and berb all doin well so go for it imo.

Hands up if you think this is the worst fpl season in history? Completely impossible to try to predict anything. When it seems like a side has consistency, they go to pot. Stats have been almost completely useless to base transfer decisions on. I’d say this year has been about 90% luck.

On the plus side – it has been a really great year to actually watch and enjoy the football itself!

Can't argue there, what makes it more annoying though is that for the first six weeks or so it was pretty predictable (Utd and Chelsea doing well etc), and I did well back then. All gone tits up since.
I can't remember a season where it was almost impossible to predict who will get relegated though, I'm still really worried about Newcastle.

I know a few who are doing fairly well & know pretty much FA about football. Makes it a bit frustrating to say the least. Knowledge is power, pah to that this season.

That’s a good point – someone in one of my mini leagues is not far off the lead and has made about 3 transfers all season. It’s the season of the casual manager for sure – damn that emergency captain rule!

Same here. Guy in my minileague is in the top 14K. He took an 8 point hit in GW3 and quit.

It's been my worst season ranking-wise - but I wouldn't classify it a poor season just because I've not been doing as well. You have to say fair play to those who have been making the correct calls, and as such this season is not really any different from any other.

I really really hated this year until this week 🙂

Hopefully the teams ive backed can keep their consistency of late going.

A bit of a different wildcard side. Not playing it until GW27 so not urgent, but I would welcome a bit of another perspective.

      Begovic, Gordon
      Coleman, Rafael, Alex, Ivanovic, Simpson
      Young, Meireles, VDV, Nani, Nasri
      RVP, Odemwingie, Tevez

Carroll comes in for Odemwingie as soon as he is fit again.

Good call on Young. I'm thinking how to get him in to my post-WC team.

It was either him or Cahill but the extra 1m saved swung it in Youngs favour.
Oh and I'm just going to look at RVP and Berbatov as interchangeable dependant on fixtures. That solves that dilemma 🙂

If Adam leaves BLP, then I'll do Adam>Young (funded by Torres>RvP and something else). Will be annoying if he doesn't go, as I'll hold on and have to shift either VDV or Nani. So hope Adam does move.

Good team AtB, but the last few weeks would make me uncertain of Rafael. Maybe he's getting his bad luck out the way all at once?

Definitely keeping an eye on him anyway, he's worrying me.
I know what you mean about Adam, in fact for GW27 he'll probably be in there somewhere. He's sort of annoying me, there are better players in better teams I want to pick, but he keeps getting points and having nice fixtures the inconsiderate prick. I know that makes no sense at all, but basically I want him to move clubs so I don't have to worry about him anymore. 🙂

Of the two I'm all for Young (thankfully otherwise that could be an awkward sentence to phrase). He takes penalties, and more importantly isn't one of the precious three striker slots.
Besides I really like Makoun and think his industry will allow Young more attacking freedom.... I hope so anyway.

Anyone thinking of bringing in any Chelsea players? Wondering of Malouda for Dempsey is a silly idea?

Lamps hasn't been too convincing since his return and Malouda looks like sitting as a 3rd striker. Another week is probs a good call as fulham have some decent fixtures left but he is currently residing on my bench.
