A decidedly dull encounter at Anfield saw Liverpool grind out another three points and continue their mini-resurgence with a 1-0 victory over a battling Fulham. Elsewhere, the Carling Cup proved far more eventful, as Birmingham City edged out West Ham in extra time to progress to the final and hand us Fantasy Managers new fixture conundrums to unravel.

Liverpool’s win was their second victory in the space of five days, propelling them up to 7th in the Premier League and leaving them targeting a previously unimaginable European spot. In Fantasy terms many of their assets are slowly edging back onto our radars as possible differentials, although the blank for Fernando Torres will have bitterly disappointed his hopeful owners.

Kenny Dalglish employed a 4-5-1 with Torres supported on the flanks by Max Rodriquez on the left and Dirk Kuyt on the right, the returning Steven Gerrard worked in tandem with Raul Meireles; both seemed to play the box-to-box central midfield role and generally took control of the halfway line with neither afraid to attack. Christian Poulsen, who was in for the injured Lucas Leiva, played deeper protecting the back four.

Having failed to keep a clean sheet for 6 Premier League games, Liverpool have now earned consecutive shut-outs. With Martin Kelly, seemingly, a nailed-on starter, the right-back’s 4.3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation is now looking immensely attractive. Kelly was again impressive and continues to draw plaudits while Glen Johnson has looked effective enough at left-back.

Raul Meireles has become a Bonus Point darling in recent weeks; the Portuguese International picked up another maximum last night, giving him 8 over the last three fixtures. In Gameweek 24 he picked up a total of 19 FPL points, notching a goal and an assist at Wolves. With just 1.6% ownership and a price of 6.8, he remains a realistic candidate for our watchlists.

Fulham continue to be a difficult outfit to break down and have conceded just 3 goals in their last 6 league outings, earning them 3 clean sheets in the process. Investment in their back four needs to be carefully considered however; with a couple of tricky games on the horizon (NEW, avl, CHE, mcy, BLA, Eve) they will find it hard to maintain their current run of defensive form. David Stockdale, priced at 3.9 in the FPL has proved an excellent short-term prospect between the sticks; it will be interesting to see if Mark Schwarzer can reclaim his place once he has returned from the Asian Cup.

For all their gritty defensive form, Fulham are still finding goals hard to come by. Moussa Dembele remains an interesting prospect however. The Belgian was awarded 2 bonus points last night as his influence on Fulham’s attacking play remains strong. If he can start to muster goals and assists, he certainly has the potential to be a decent option in the budget bracket as an FPL bench forward. Again however, Fulham’s tough run of opponents has to be considered.

Over in the Carling Cup, Alex McLeish made wholesale changes to his midfield with Alexander Hleb and Keith Fahey dropped and David Bentley cup-tied, in came Lee Bowyer, Craig Gardner and Sebastian Larsson. The 3-1 victory saw Bowyer and Gardner both claim goals, whilst Larsson also impressed. Following the disappointing 5-0 loss to Manchester United, McLeish may choose to keep his cup heroes in his starting XI for the FA Cup tie with Coventry.

Despite our Birmingham triple Gameweek hopes being dashed by their progress to the Carling Final, Birmingham’s key assets should still be looked at as potential point grabbers for their double home fixtures in Gameweek 27. As we stated in our earlier article, Birmingham follow this up with a blank fixture in Gameweek 28 and then another double in Gameweek 29.

Gardner and Larsson both started and impressed last night and they could be cheap FPL options, although McLeish continues to rotate in midfield areas and, right now, there appears little security on offer. Defensive targets, with Roger Johnson perhaps the key figure having scored two goals over recent matches, look to be more solid considerations.

On that front, the selection of Martin Jiranek at centre-back, allowing Liam Ridgewell to move to left-back, meant that David Murphy dropped to the bench. We were lining Murphy up as a potential bargain over the rest of the season given that he was earning starts following the season-long injury to Scott Dann; Murphy is priced at just 3.9 in the FPL. However, Jiranek was singled out for praise by McLeish and could now hold his starting role.

“We felt that Martin deserved his chance. Maybe I’ve been too cautious not giving him more playing time. I thought he was magnificent tonight.”

You can pick up the Czech for 4.5 in the FPL but the uncertainty surrounding his starts and those of Murphy, will likely discourage investment; hardly desirable as we approach Birmingham’s double Gameweek.

Nani, A Young, Fabregas, Adam, VDV

    Van Persie, Tevez, Berbatov

No Chelsea players ok? Could have Malouda or Lampard at the expense of a striker instead of Young.

Last season it really paid off when you went with the poll every week.. this year it seems like it's best to go with the second or third best choice 😛 It might be because of the randomness of this season, but it could also be because of the site's popularity.

possibly. you aren't palnning toleave him out after the double though are you. tottenham have a great run of fixtures after the dgw so he's worth just sticking in imo. like the arsenal lot he should be under threat in the first dgw game, but that still leaves blackpool which could easily be double figures for him. the jury is still out on him and defoe. in theiry i very much agree with your thoughts that defoe will cripple him a bit but so far in the brief time they've played together vdv has still done well

If I spent 12.5 on him I would consider getting rid, but to be honest he is one of the two best value midfielders in the game. Possibly Cahill or Young might match him until the end of the season but I still think VdV is the better of the three.
I'm keeping him AND getting Young. I just have to let the Fabregas dream go. 😥

Have to bench one out of these three this gameweek:

    A) DJ Campbell (home vs West Ham)
    B) Nasri (home vs Everton)
    C) VdV (away vs Blackburn)

    What say you?

I've not looked at that site for a while, but I remember it as bad to the point of laughable. 'Our experts predict' and all that. Made much worse by the fact the guy behind it was on here under two different accounts saying how good it was and how bad (often inaccurate was the phrase used, I think) FFS is.

Were there really many people on here predicting big points for VDV away to Newcastle?

I have looked at it a few times and sometimes it is way out But one useful feature is that you can see immediately your teams for the next 4 weeks ahead which is quite helpful for doing WCs etc

    Hey, you know Championship Manager?

I played it once, and I didn't understand how to play, but you get to buy and sell people right? I think the one I played, you could declare your interest in someone, and people say they're interested in joining your club. But nothing ever happens.

Secondly, is it possible to create a good team from unheard of players (like Blackpool) or is it all about Galactico's?

Thirdly, I can't remember, but can you create a team from scratch? And do you have to pick players like "he's a left winger" or can you play people OOP?

    Thanks in advance.

Well the old championship manager used to be brilliant, and then I believe the people behind that went on to make Football Manager leaving Championship Manager as a faded shell of its former illustrious self. I have FM2011 and I have guided Newcastle to 12th so far (its January in my game), its good but its a bit of a chore at times.
As for players it's all about the stats.

I used to be on it for hours on end but this new one is a lot of work, can only do about an hour or so at a time. Enjoyable though, you do have some good moments. I had a classical Newcastle style match against Man Utd where I went 3-1 up and they scored twice in the 89th and 90th mins to draw.
Oh you can bollock or praise your players at halftime and fulltime too.

No, very realistically most of the players are prissy little bitches who start whining and whining if you bollock them for playing 4/10 at home to Blackpool.
Oh and you have to haggle with their agents over contracts and the agent demands fees etc I imagine it is pretty realistic.

could you start by making a really defensive team and surviving your first season (ala Birmingham) and then investing in attacking players?

Do you get champions league places (and the money that goes with it)?

Do you get bargain players that pull more weight than expected?

If Charlie boy goes to Liverpool I'd probably go Ferguson and Young.

But that's not the point, is it Soop? You identify players who could score well in future, and one of the best ways of doing that is seeing who has been coming close to good scores lately. Otherwise you just pick your team on whoever has the most points so far.

Every player needs to have that bit of luck on his side so that the shot goes in rather than hitting the post, but you don't identify who will benefit most from the luck by just looking at past stats.

As it turns out, Kolarov hasn't scored well, but he's come close with a lot of shots. That's why people spoke about him highly.

Yeah, I'll give you that, but while you can identify players who are potentially good, if a player actually scores 2 points per game on average, I say it's time to look elsewhere.

Even if he does score 2 goals next week, I'd rather look for someone who's going to score a bit less, but every week.

Yeah, but if the Bellamy deal from the summer, where City refused to play ball with any potential rivals (e.g. Spurs) - forcing him to drop down a division to Cardiff - is anything to go by, then I won't hold my breath. City are so rich they don't need to bow to player power. Unless by any chance he's a free agent this Summer, which would be handy!

No I appreciate that, but Man City and Blackburn are bad enough but the idea that England's biggest football team becomes a mere plaything of people who don't know or care about football is reprehensible.
It would probably destroy the Premier League too as Man Utd and Man City enter the sillymoney stratosphere building teams of galaticos. Urgh.
I would definitely turn ABU I'm sorry to say, I don't like Man City any more (and they used to be one of my favourite teams)

I know what you mean - the last group that were thinking of buying us were made up of Goldman Sachs bankers and the like. The kind of people who can afford £1billion for a football club are not going to be very nice people, I would have thought.

It's the law in German football that all clubs must be at least 50% owned by the fans - sensible idea (although teams like Wigan might struggle...).

How substantial is the guardian? I don't read papers, I mean is it more than likely going to be some Andy Gray exclusive or actual big news?

The Guardian and the Murdoch group have been engaged in a kind of corporate/journalistic warfare over the News of the World phone tapping, it's the Guardian not dropping it that has lead to new criminal investigation, Coulson quitting etc... They are not friends, so there could be an Andy Gray angle - but I'd be disappointed

      Cesc Fabregas...

Overrated, overpriced with a bloated value of 11.8m that could be used in the frontline department which is bursting at the seams with options. At best will continue to return modest but consistent enough returns...

      OR

Sleeper hit, slight differential (9% ownership) and on the verge of a spectacular gameweek or two. Absolute essential for GW27 and bound to finally show some value for his outlay.

      Discuss.

I've got him. Not bad, but he hasn't shown value yet.
Accoding to the people that watch football, he's been playing well and been unlucky not to score.

I could use the money elsewhere, but I think I'll keep him for the DGW, sell him for the blank, and get him back after.
