Birmingham City have today confirmed the signing of central defender Curtis Davies on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee, reported elsewhere as £3.5 million.

Davies, who has been out of favour at bitter rivals Villa this season, spent over two months on loan at Leicester City before the New Year and has previously made England squads under Fabio Capello.

In Fantasy terms, the move seems to have quashed the potential of David Murphy, priced at 3.9, as a cheap Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defensive option. The left-back won his place in the team after the season-long injury to Scott Dann forced manager Alex McLeish to reshuffle of his backline, with Liam Ridgewell moving from the left to play in the heart with Roger Johnson. It now seems very likely that, with more cover available in the centre, Ridgewell will now return to his full-back role, resigning Murphy to the bench.

Davies himself is by no means a guaranteed starter. Martin Jiranek was handed a rare outing in the 3-1 extra time victory over West Ham in the Carling Cup and duly impressed. The Czech Republic international could therefore be given an extended chance to stake his claim, forcing Davies fight for his place.

Birmingham players are certainly worth keeping an eye on with an interesting run of fixtures on the horizon, including two double Gameweeks (MCY, whm, STK & NEW, N/A, WBA & eve, wig). But with uncertainty over whether Davies will start, Roger Johnson who is priced at 5.1 – just 0.2 more than the new arrival – would be a more reliable choice in defence. Johnson has also picked up 10 Bonus Points this season and found the back of the net on 2 occasions.

Meanwhile, it appears that Alex McLeish still has cash to splash. The Blues are being continually linked with Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins and it has been reported by some sources that he has joined on loan until the end of the season from Rubin Kazan. Martins, who is undoubtedly a talent on his day, would seem likely to be valued at around 6.0 in the FPL game. Whether he would provide stronger scoring potential than Cameron Jerome (5.5) is certainly debatable.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

So is anyone sticking Vela in their team?

He is class and with starts could be good? And at 4.4 could be steal/allow more money into the midfield.

WBA fixtures aren't bad either, with arguably the best double gameweek. Will he start?

He will do well at West Brom, don't listen to the knockers on here, hes a good player who has had the confidence drained out of him by a manager playing him out wide or giving him odd mins here and there.

Hopefully he will be played as a striker and his mojo will return.

He should do, I'd personally play him up front on his own with Odemwingie behind with a free role. I hear he doesn't like playing up front on his own or anywhere other than as a striker in a 442 though?

Ive seen him a fair bit and he always looked shocking up top on his own or out wide, the only times he looked like he had something was when he played upfront with Bendtner a couple of years ago in the CC.

He needs to feed of a striker I think, not sure if he will be good trying to be the main man but will be good playing off a target man I think.

You don't have anyone like that though so it will be interesting to see how he fits in.

I would also add that Henry was a winger and not much of a goalscorer before he came to Arsenal. Different leagues require different demands, some players are up to it and some players are not.

Henry was actually a striker at youth level that got turned into a winger and then got moved back again at Arsenal.

This is true. Wenger moved him wide at Monaco because he was a Michael Owen type with nothing more than pace and an eye for goal.

By the time he picked him back up at Arsenal, he felt Henry had learned enough to be a more complete forward.

Yeah, Bergkamp's failed spell at Inter always intrigues me. Although many a good player can underachieve in a league...take Forlan, there are probably some people out there who'd consider him a cr*p player because he didn't do in the EPL..
              Interesting topic.

Forlan has improved his game tenfold since he left United and if Spurs pick him up I think he'll be a success. He always was a good player just needs a playing system that works for him, it just didn't work out for him at United. Veron is another example.

Kezman is the classic example when anyone ever moves from Holland to England, but it's always glazed over that Kezman is Robbie Fowler. He lacks anything beyond and ability to put the ball in the net.

Most teams don't make that mistake any more, and look for more complete strikers, especially from other leagues. Unless they're managed by Gareth Southgate.

Kezman didn't really stand a chance of succeeding, he was axed pretty quickly while Drogba was given the season to adjust when he was just as bad.

                Chelsea ruined him.

I dont think he will have the impact that VDV has had immediately. VDV had been playing at a higher level so it was easier to adjust. Some of the defending in Holland is pretty basic and makes La Liga look like Serie A of the 90s.

He may be a success but I doubt it will happen immediately. If i remember rightly then Kezman had a better goals per game ratio than Van nistlepiss and Ronaldo.

I currently have Rooney RVP and Torres up front. Looking to despatch with Rooney for a value striker. This will free up funds to bring in Cahill for the DGW. I am thinking Odem, DJ or maybe even Vela.

DJ has a great game this week and a decent DGW. The West Brom strikers have the better DGW.

If I bring Cambell in I will probably bring in brunt later for the DGW

Is this a sound strategy and what are your preferences?

    Quickfire round.

    a) Odem
    b) DJ
    c) Vela

    Cheers

If Torres does stay I think he's going to be captain for me, up front with Suarez he should thrive imo. On Fabregas at the moment though, going to stick with him unless Torres 100% stays!

i transfered out torres today for RVP

my problem after great gameweeks like this, i seem to think that everything i touch turns into gold, only to experience after that i am like king midas in reverse, everything i touch turns to shit, so probably torres will be on fire alongside suarez

70p to get in the Kippax.

I was the northern end, off Bury New Rd next to Prestwich.
Me too, stretford paddock 90p standing on me tippie toes. Double edged sword when we scored, I knew I would end up in a massive crush and about 50 steps further down the end.
Stood in the Kippax, red side though on a few occassions. There was once a massive crush in there and they opened the front railing gate and allowed us to move over to the far corner of Platt Lane on the benches.

              I don't think so.

Don't know but you've got it. Was trying to think of a generic team from last year. Just shows how much changes in one season!!

Funny, that's still Jon Reeson's starting 11 for this week. Still living off the glory days. 🙂

    Need to review my defence:

Williamson, Huth, R Johnson, Elmahamdy and Rafael. Thinking of selling Rafael 5.7, but for who....Cheers

Smart money would be on Vidic if you can afford.

Nah. I'd probably invest in a defender soon. Their back line is looking tidy these days

    Evening guys

Used my WC last week, thought I wouldn't make any changes for awhile, but have heard Nasri or Walcott carrying knocks and risk of rotation!

    Here's my team.

    Hart
    Vidic, Onuoha, Huth
    Walcott, Nasri, Nani, Adam
    Berbs, RVP, Tevez(C)

    Carson, Jara, Ferguson, Coleman

I have 0.1 in the kitty, thinking of taking Walcott out because my bench is poor and can't afford Walcott to miss the game or to only play for 20-odd mins. Thinking of bringing either Dempsey or Meireles.

    What do you think?

Should I save this change and stockpile, or is there a better change I can make?

    Cheers!

Keep in mind GW27...this should be a points fest like last week, so set yourself up for this. Birmingham have 3 games..

True Jim. Need a guaranteed starter for this week who's likey to get a goal or assist. Then probably bring Theo back for GW27...

What about Wilshere, if Nasri and Walcott are not likely to get a game

Btw, due to progress in the cup B'ham dont have 3 games now. They have DGW, blank week, then another DGW.

Meireles certainly is on a roll, I dont think Dempsey will do much after this next game, maybe Brunt, he has a sick run of games..

        Point taken.

I had Brunt in before I used the WC. He was getting rubbish points, had to drop. I keep thinking about bringing in Y. Toure. He can score a goal or two

Will Arsenal play in GW28. Still time, but if you have 2 Gooner midfielders you might need to watch this...just a thought
