Birmingham City have today confirmed the signing of central defender Curtis Davies on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee, reported elsewhere as £3.5 million.

Davies, who has been out of favour at bitter rivals Villa this season, spent over two months on loan at Leicester City before the New Year and has previously made England squads under Fabio Capello.

In Fantasy terms, the move seems to have quashed the potential of David Murphy, priced at 3.9, as a cheap Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defensive option. The left-back won his place in the team after the season-long injury to Scott Dann forced manager Alex McLeish to reshuffle of his backline, with Liam Ridgewell moving from the left to play in the heart with Roger Johnson. It now seems very likely that, with more cover available in the centre, Ridgewell will now return to his full-back role, resigning Murphy to the bench.

Davies himself is by no means a guaranteed starter. Martin Jiranek was handed a rare outing in the 3-1 extra time victory over West Ham in the Carling Cup and duly impressed. The Czech Republic international could therefore be given an extended chance to stake his claim, forcing Davies fight for his place.

Birmingham players are certainly worth keeping an eye on with an interesting run of fixtures on the horizon, including two double Gameweeks (MCY, whm, STK & NEW, N/A, WBA & eve, wig). But with uncertainty over whether Davies will start, Roger Johnson who is priced at 5.1 – just 0.2 more than the new arrival – would be a more reliable choice in defence. Johnson has also picked up 10 Bonus Points this season and found the back of the net on 2 occasions.

Meanwhile, it appears that Alex McLeish still has cash to splash. The Blues are being continually linked with Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins and it has been reported by some sources that he has joined on loan until the end of the season from Rubin Kazan. Martins, who is undoubtedly a talent on his day, would seem likely to be valued at around 6.0 in the FPL game. Whether he would provide stronger scoring potential than Cameron Jerome (5.5) is certainly debatable.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Anyone going with Torres as (C)? I planned it, but i'm having second thoughts about it. I have Nani, Tevez, Adam and Nasri as other potentials for the armband.

i just transfered torres out for RVP to ease my captains choice as i had the same alternativs as you pretty much..

didnt feel comfortable with torres in my team with all this transfer talk going on, he seems like a sensible player with much on his mind already, so dont know. Stuck with tevez when he was in the middle of it, but he is a different kind om cold commited animal..

Hi guys, just wondering which option to perhaps go for here? Nani and RVP would feature in both 😉

    A) Fabs + Odem

    B) Walcott + Berba

    Thanks 🙂

formations are never outdated, only players, right?

with lamps and essien in the middle of it, i am sure it could work out as both ramires and malouda knows when to defend or go forward

According to Balague there is no buy out clause. It would suprise me if there was, I mean do Liverpool have the gravitas of a club who could stipulate such conditions in a contract. I imagine they were just glad to get pen to paper in the first place.

Of course they could have. Doesn't come down to gravitas. We pay him £xxk more a week, a buy out clause gets included to protect the investment. I'm not saying there is one but no reason there can't be.

I reckon 2 or 3 quality players in different areas of the pitch would be better than a shit team feeding an increasingly frustrated quality, proven striker. I think it's a good deal for both parties, if it happens. Chelski's forwards' movement has been preety awful these last few months, not many attackers making intelligent runs etc. etc. It makes sense I guess but would take some balls from Fernando to move..he better get good house security

Allow Drogba the move back to Marseille that he so clearly wants, and play with Torres as the main man upfront.

If Drogba was happy to become a benchwarmer/someone generally awesome to bring off the bench, then that would be ideal, but I doubt he will.

Not much width there though in order to get balls in the box and feed the two boys.
I'd go 4-4-2 just to accommodate the 2 lads up front, but I'm finding it hard to pick a decent midfield. Lampard in a 2 man midfield is a complete disaster

I guess it could work with a midfield four of Malouda Essien Lampard Ramires behind it... Torres could move out to the right with Ramires shifting inside if we're getting overrun in midfield.

I'm convinced. Lamps could drop back to make a 3 man centre mid in times of strife (Arsenal 🙂 ), leaving Malouda free to roam and the full backs pushing on.

Gerrard won't go anywhere. Reina is a total legend and if he goes good luck to him. LFC could make £60m+ selling 2 players which we badly need. Selling our best players is clearly worrying but it's just where we are as a club. Nothing to say we couldn't rebuild.

Enough to have seen the success in America and how they cone to that success. The model the adopted was great for the club and fans. I like the cut of their jib and so far so good. They acted at the right time re the manager. Chose the right caretaker and seem financial sound. That'll do me.

      Sell Tevez?

It's akin to chopping off your testicles to lose some weight!

Make the most of it. You will play next season, it's just highly doubtful that you'll reach these lofty heights.

                  I won't play next season.

My NFL teams suffered badly through neglect.(time spent on here and thinking football)

Excellent. Mark is basing his whole strategy on having his Torres differential. That'll mean he has 3 players out, 1 week after playing his wildcard. 🙂

I'd seriously doubt Torres will play just a few hours after his transfer. He might get a cameo at best.

Vela at 4.4, playing regularly could be a steal. I might bid farewell to Carroll.
