Man United again suffered the first-half blues only to recover in time to claim a safe passage into the last sixteen. Villa keep up their winning run, Birmingham taste further cup joy, whilst the rest suffer stalemates which have, thankfully, already been re-scheduled for Fantasy Managers to plan around.

The holders fielded, arguably, their strongest available line-up for the trip to Everton, with Frank Lampard recovering from injury to take his place in the Chelsea starting XI. Carlo Ancelotti’s side had Petr Cech to thank for keeping them in the cup, with a string of saves repelling the home team, as substitute Salomon Kalou snatched an equaliser to deny Everton a deserved victory.

According to the BBC site, the Chelsea-Everton replay is scheduled for Saturday February 19, the same week as the Fifth Round games. The effect, if any, on the Premier League fixtures is not yet fully known but this back-up in games could cause potential havoc down the line.

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov started for only the second time since November for Everton, suggesting the departure of Steven Pienaar may lead to increased game time for the Russian. A groin injury to Victor Anichebe gave Jack Rodwell a place in David Moyes’ starting XI, with Louis Saha given the nod ahead of Jermain Beckford up front. Saha’s goal just after the hour mark certainly vindicated Moyes’ decision to start him, and his opening goal was the Frenchman’s seventh in eight games against Ancelotti’s side.

Gerard Houllier rang the changes for Aston Villa’s home tie with Blackburn, with half his key personnel -Ashley Young, Stewart Downing, Stilyan Petrov, James Collins and Richard Dunne- either benched or missing out altogether. Fantasy Owners of Marc Albrighton may have cause for concern, though, as the youngster was omitted for the second game in a row. Right-back Kyle Walker recovered from injury to return to the starting line-up for Villa.

Ciaran Clark scored the opener for the hosts and clearly has an eye for goal; the young defender has scored three goals in only thirteen league appearances this season. Robert Pires grabbed his first goal for Villa and Nathan Delfouneso made it three to send Blackburn spiralling out of the cup. A straight red card for left-back Nathan Baker means he will miss the next three matches for Houllier’s side, who have now won three games on the spin.

Blackburn took a strong side to Villa Park, but Roque Santa Cruz lasted just ten minutes before succumbing to a hamstring injury, though Steve Kean said after the match that he’s optimistic the injury isn’t too serious. Nikola Kalinic, on as a replacement, wasted little time in making his mark, grabbing the equaliser just eight minutes after taking the field. Despite playing against ten men for nigh on half an hour, Kean’s men couldn’t take advantage and can now concentrate on the league for the remainder of the season.

After his side’s midweek Carling Cup exploits, Alex McLeish made wholesale changes for Birmingham’s game with Coventry. Nikola Zigic and Kevin Phillips led the line for Big Eck’s team, with the likes of Ben Foster and Craig Gardner getting a well-earned rest. McLeish chose to play David Bentley on the left, and by all accounts the on-loan man had a impressive game, grabbing a goal his performance deserved. Birmingham went two down but fought back to score three goals for the second home game in a row. Phillips’ winner showed he’s lost none of his eye for goal, despite a distinct lack of first team minutes this term.

In a Bolton debut that delighted Owen Coyle, David Wheater partnered Zat Knight in central defence for the top-flight showdown with Wigan. Gary Cahill sat on the bench, which led to suggestions that he could be heading out of the Reebok before the transfer window closes on Monday night. Otherwise, Coyle named pretty much a full-strength side, as Bolton (without a win in their last 5 league games) went looking for a morale-boosting win. A bore goalless draw, however, means they have failed to score in their last three games and the Trotters will now travel to the DW Stadium for the replay on Wednesday February 16.

Wigan, still without the inspirational Antolin Alcaraz in defence and devoid of Ali Al-Habsi due to the loan deal with his parent club, managed, nevertheless, to keep a clean sheet at Bolton. Roberto Martinez made eight changes to the side that lost at home midweek to Aston Villa and -with both Charles N’Zogbia and Hugo Rodallega not even making the bench- a spirited performance earned the visitors the above-mentioned replay.

Man United almost came undone at Southampton but showed a resilience that pretty much sums up their season so far. Sir Alex Ferguson played a second-string back-four and goalkeeper and fielded Michael Owen with Javier Hernandez up front, and, similar to their midweek game at Blackpool, United were poor in the first period.

Fergie held his hands up after the game and admitted his tactics -playing a diamond in midfield to match Southampton’s shape- were one of the reasons his side struggled. Darron Gibson started in midfield but once again was replaced early in the second half, with Ryan Giggs and Nani coming on to help win the game. Both Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney had the day off, watching on from the bench as Owen and Hernandez grabbed a goal apiece to break Saints hearts.

It's horrible watching Cesc score in all cup competitions. Need him to start banging them in in the league, he won't be a differential much longer.

Funny how these arguments about Bendtner start every time he plays, and then every time he plays he's involved in at least one goal.

Ok do you really believe that movement and passing at the level Arsenal play at is that easy that no credit is due for it.

How do you think in the first place Bendtner created a chance for himself to shoot which led to the first goal or got goal side of a player to force the foul for the pen?

I'm sorry but: a.) this was against Huddersfield and b.) if he's even remotely near PL quality then getting goalside of a defender shouldn't really be classed as a great achievement......

No, I just get pissed off when people continually have a go at him, despite him playing well - and being involved in goals - virtually every time he plays.

He was single handedly keeping Arsenal in the title race for a period last season too.

                    Apparently so.

If a goal is scored against Stoke it is automatically better, apparently.

This is one of the most stupid arguments i've seen on the board to be honest. If you genuinely thin that goal being scored against Ipswich detracts from the quality of it then you're not the type to be persuaded by a valid reasoned argument.

its like hitting head against a brick wall.

As i was saying to MF few weeks back which RBJ didnt understand or like its the Micheal Carrick appreciation type fan v the rest.

If you dont see what he does (which the media and most fans arent that into football to care about ) then everyone can be slated as sh#T

Movement, link play and creating chances are not deemed important to majority of football fans

Therefore Bendtner is sh"T. But even goin on goals scored only barometer of performance his record is as good if not better than many many strikers

Today was not any of his better games to be honest, and I do think he's a good player. Could have easily had a hat trick if he would have been a bit more alert.

I mean I don't want to argue with 2 assists, but as I've slated Rooney all year when getting his assists I think I'll have to say Bendtner was bad today. He was.

Arsenal create so many chances that 'he should be scoring loads' but with Rooney he's apparently playing well, it's just his role isn't to score goals.

Some of the united fans double standards (not you) is pretty shocking.

I think the whole Rooney discussion is damaged beyond repair. We've basically lost our ability to judge him fairly, every one of us.

The ones saying he's playing well or is close to finding his form are delusional though, he's doing the same job out on the wing that Valon Behrami could do for Manchester United.

Speaking of which, it's amusing how West Ham went into the transfer window promising loads of signings, and all they've achieved is losing their best player.

Thats why its best to leave bias at the door and talk about his 200k plus wages and only 3 goals and 9 assists for United in nearly a year.

There is only one way to view his form when you look at it that way.

And he has probably played a small proportion of them games on the wing.

Most Overrated player in the premier league?

For me it is Milner. I just dont see what he is good at other than working hard (which to me is the sign of a bad player when his redeeming feature is his workrate a la Kuyt)

*Insert any member of the England world cup squad bar Ashley Cole*

Probably John Terry. Was quite amusing yesterday to see him lose teh first 2 contests v Saha yesterday.

Then Saha scored against him again.

Terry is one of the best defenders in the league and has been since 2001. I've lost count of the amount of times he's made the forwards of Arsenal(Henry included), United and Liverpool look absolutely shit.

Not kidding you at all Gargamel. Obviously he's prone to error now as he's getting on a bit and he was never the fastest in the first place but his overall understanding and reading of the game is second to none, and has been for some time.
Re: Bendtner: I don't rate him but some people do. I'm not calling anyone an idiot. I was just talking about how you can't really say anyone is shit these days without a heat map thrown back in your face, which is annoying when you watch these guys week in , week out for a number of years. It's all opinion, nobody's an idiot.

Terry is only "rated" in England.
There I said what many non english people know very well.

The only thing i can agree on is that he has been in the league since 2001.
Not many others can say that and those that can are better.

And of all the players he has played with over the years they have all been bette than him easily and dont make stupid last ditch hero tackles cos they were caught out time and time again.
Deasilly, Carvalho, Gallas, Campbell, Rio, Alex and now Ivanonic have all played better than him over the years with him.

He just happend to get the headlines cos he is decent in the opposition box

And just watch the Germany for confirmation for his poor decision making while playing Klose who although being a very good player didnt have much match sharpness going into that game

DB - you say Terry is only rated in England. Well how come he was in the UEFA team of the year in 2004, 2007, 2008 & 2009.

I really dislike the way you give your "opinions" and back them up by saying people outisde of England think this. Do you represent the rest of the world?

i said many people outside of england think this.

Which from my experiences is very true. While the likes of Cole , Scholes, Shearer were held in high regard for there ability and performances in top level games many of my friends from many nations, team mates again in different countries and foreign press have often joked about how overated Beckham and Terry are with little to show regarding top level performances .

Uefa teams of the year are farcical at best and have included many dodgy selections. The fact that Terry plays for 2 very commerical teams in the most publiced league in the world helps him massively.

I dont think he is crap or anything but just above average and lucky to had the career he has had.
He has been at fault for so many important goals.

But more importantly has failed at the highest level on numerous occasions. The recent world cup providing the best example where he got the limelight for some dogy defending against a mediocre slovenia team and yet was destroyed when the push came to the shove.

I think to suggest Terry is among the best defenders of his generation is an insult to the Cannavarso, Nestas, Rio, Vidic, Puyol, Ayala's, Thurams, etc etc

Who have performed immensely in the toughest of situations. He is grossly over rated in my opinion

So Terry is only reated in England?

He was voted best defender in the champions league 2005 & 2008.

PFA player of the year 2005.

Named in the Fifa all star squad for the world cup of 2006.

            Made the Fifpro world 11 in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009.

Named in the Uefa team of the year 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009.

The same Fifa who are as corrupt as the day is long and the same Uefa who included Adam Johnson in this years short list for Uefa team in the year.

Think their are far better judges of players than Uefa and Fifa.

And finally the Fifa world cup squad is so large nearly 3 teams fit in it.

Like in 2006 both Cannarvo and Terry on paper were included.
While in reality Cannarvo produced possibly the best display in the history of world cups of any defenders to lead italy to the trophy while Terry lost in the last 8 amongst many an average display.

There is a middle ground here, Terry is a good example of a typical English centreback. Like a good Steven Taylor he is brave, strong and good in the air. Vidic is in a similar mould, but personally I think Vidic is better than Terry.

I prefer a defender like Woodgate or Carvalho though, more a thinking defender rather than a bombastic type.

This clip shows everything that is paradoxically great and bad about John Terry

I prefer the Vidic's of the defending world tbh.....

Though obviously you need one of each in a balanced defence....

True that. The thinking one is more important and harder to find though, Woodgate managed to make Andy O'Brien look like a good defender for a couple of seasons, I think Chelsea look far more vulnerable without Carvalho, and United always look ropey without Ferdinand.

Yo JP, hitting WC myself, am thinking:

    Nasri OUT Meireles IN
    N'Zogbia/Adam OUT Brunt IN
    Campbell OUT Odemwingie IN
    Torres OUT RVP IN
    Rooney OUT Tevez IN
Baines OUT Coleman IN (you have Coleman right?)

Not sure about Adam > Brunt, and Liverpool's fixtures aren't great after the Stoke game, so not sure about Meireles either....

      Foster Begovic
      Kolarov Djourou R.Johnson Coleman Jara
Fabregas VDV Nani Adam 9.8 mid
      RVP Tevez Odemwingie

That's what I'm looking at at the moment. Ashley Young is tempting, but I'm not sure about 'only' have 9 doublers for week 27.

Not too keen on Chelsea's fixtures though. Two tough away games, and Utd and Liverpool at home, plus no double.

Cahill is definitely an option, if he is going to definitely play against Blackpool then I may go for him. He did excellently for me earlier in the season.

Id probably get a cheaper midfielder with your 9.8 and use the excess to sort out that defence. Staying loyal to jara is nonsensical, even with an 'easy' double. And kolorov well hes just became a bit of a joke really hasnt he? Doubling up on brum defence would be good if they still had a triple but id say an unneccesary risk for only a double. Unless of course you plan on playing begovic for stokes unfavourable double which is my opinion not likely to yield much points.

I like doubling up on Birmingham for weeks 27 and 29, and hopefully the rest of my defence can cover for week 28.

You're probably right about Jara and the midfielder. Other than Malouda there aren't actually many players around 9.8, so whoever I get will probably allow me to upgrade Jara.

          I'm definitely keeping Kolarov though.

Much more importantly than the usual form of B-string Bendy, Shava had a much better game today - should have had an assist if NB could hit a barn door, as well as making a crucial goal-saving tackle.

Jamsiep "Funny how these arguments about Bendtner start every time he plays, and then every time he plays he’s involved in at least one goal"

Don't you do the same with Kalou? He's the same as Bendtner, gets lots of chances because of his movement, and is often involved in goals when he plays so how is it that Bendtner is class and Kalou isn't?

What are the merits of doing it now with no real stand out fixtures and couple of teams having 1 decent fixture left Liverpool and Utd) then fixtures getting tougher?

        international games in between though.

27 is gonna be the big scoring one. Surely it's best to be able to make transfers right up until the deadline for that one so can take account all injuried/team news and see how any last minute signings fit in?

I've already triggered it, so no point worrying about that now!

If I didn't WC then I'd probably have to take an 8 point hit to get rid of Rooney, Torres and Nasri... If I have to take an 8 point hit for week 27 because of injuries, then so be it, it's no different to take the hit now.

That's what I reckon as well.

But you have to keep an eye on the fixtures, if there's too many doubles in GW27 from teams who then aren't playing in GW28 I may play it for GW26 and then have some transfers saved for GW28

I thought that too but when you look at GW27, those teams with doubles also have very favourable fixtures in GW's 25 & 26 meaning waiting until GW27 could mean you have missed some decent points from the likes of RVP, Fabs, Berbs, Adam, VDV etc...

Couple that with price changes, injuries and the ongoing transfer saga's the more i think about the more i believe now is the right time to WC.

    Al-Habsi, Tevez, Kelly, Evra.

Only going for Huth cos he has a nice home game against Sunderland GW26, then the double which is just a bonus plus then he'll have us at home GW28, when others won't have a game.
