The calm before the storm? Right now we’re still waiting for the £50 million Fernando Torres bomb to go off, while the fuse looks to be burning away nicely on Andy Carroll’s proposed transfer to Anfield as his £35 million replacement. Incredible stuff if it comes off.

Right now we have to be content with just a couple of moves, the most significant of which appears to be Blackpool’s signing of Andy Reid from Sunderland. Yesterday it was reported that Ian Holloway had targeted the impish Irishman as a possible replacement for Charlie Adam who is of course coveted by Liverpool.

Could Dalglish swoop for the Blackpool playmaker to help ease the loss of Torres? It’s just one of many unanswered questions right now on what is proving to be a deadline day full of big speculation, although typically, nothing much has happened just yet.

According to Opta, in the Premier League this season, Carroll has more goals than Torres (11 to nine), more assists (three to two) and the time lapse between goals is less (148 mins per goal compared to 211 mins per goal). The Newcastle striker's shooting accuracy is worse than Torres however, with 43% of his shots hitting the target compared to the Spaniard's 52%.

I actually think Newcastle are right in rejecting the offer. They could still get into Europe (which would never happen without Carroll)and that money would never be spent before the deadline.

Plus, now the 35 million has been offered by a club that puts carroll in an entirely new financial league- therefore they can fleece another club in the summer.

Although if Carroll DOES want to leave that changes things to an extent

    garg regarding torres joing being good for bosingwa (was having to use my dodgy phone so couldnt even find your reply let alone reply to it) basically like with man city i think wing backs could become crucial for chelsea with drogba and torres, making bosingwa's case for selection stronger. i think ancelotti will pick a formation based on his personnel in which case they dont really have 2 wide midfielders (just malouda) and also they have a wealth of talent in the central areas (essien, lamps, ramires, mikel, mceachran) so a narrower diamond may be ancelotti's solution to try and get the best out of torres and drogba.

1652: Wow. A twist in the Andy Carroll saga - and it's a biggie - despite reports earlier that Newcastle had accepted a Liverpool bid for the 22-year-old striker (see 1513), it seems they actually rejected the Reds' second offer too. Just SIX HOURS of the transfer window left for the two clubs to work that one out - and how much does it rely on Fernando Torres completing his move to Chelsea too. We will find out, soon enough...

  Yep off he goes. Going to be a long bloody season for us now. No time for an adequate replacement, and I really can't see Ashley re-investing more than 10% of the money into the club.
  Bad for us and shows Liverpool's desperation, why didn't they sign the accomplished real deal in Forlan to reunite him with Suarez?

      Forlan is uninjured and has the class to push Liverpool for a UEFA spot at least.
      He also knows and works well with Suarez and is a better player than Andy Carroll. From what I gather new regulations to be enforced in the near future will make spending such money difficult and they could sign someone better than Carroll when they come to pass.
      
      In the interests of peace, seeing as all we tend to do is wind each other up, how about you just stop replying to my posts and I'll stop replying to yours? I don't enjoy these eternal back and forths, it isn't the reason I come on here.

        But why would Forlan want to come back to England to try and qualify for Europe where at Madrid he has already won the Europa league and then went on to win the best player at the World Cup.
        
        Its not exactly something that would appeal to a player of that class with that experience to play for a team who are trying to get into Europa league
