With speculation rife over manager Avram Grant’s job security, inadequate performances leading to lacklustre results and a spot in the relegation zone being almost omnipresent; it is fair to say that West Ham have had a grim season. Since Grant waved what appeared to be a farewell to the Hammers crowd following the 3-0 loss to Arsenal however, Premier League results have turned a corner. The 2-2 draw away at Everton and a 3-1 victory on the road at Blackpool in midweek suggested that the Hammers are on the up.

Recent signings have also provided a boost and the deal that brought Robbie Keane from London rivals Tottenham until the end of the season looks set to be the most significant.

Since Rafael Van der Vaart’s arrival at Spurs, Harry Redknapp has often played just one striker and with Keane behind Jermaine Defoe, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko in the hierarchy, the Irishman found his opportunities limited, mustering just a handful of appearances this season.

The Ireland captain certainly feels he still has what it takes to compete in the Premier League though:

“I feel I have plenty left to offer at the highest level for at least the next four or five years.”

He lived up to his word and failed to disappoint on his debut for the Hammers by grabbing a goal a Blackpool. Under Grant, Keane looks assured of starts and has a hunger that could well prove vital to West Ham’s survival chances. He could also us Fantasy Managers some unlikely potential for the run-in.

The Statistics

After bursting onto the scene with Wolves as a teenager, where after 3 seasons he scored 29 goals in 87 appearances, he was snapped up by Coventry and once again impressed. After a few seasons of being passed around between Inter Milan and Leeds United, it was his fifth club Tottenham where Keane finally settled.

Moving to Spurs from Leeds for £7 million saw Keane find a home and some consistency, staying at White Hart Lane for six years; playing 197 Premier League games and scoring 80 goals in the process. It was the 2007/2008 season where he was most prolific in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) terms; Keane scored 162 points which included 15 goals, 7 assists and 22 bonus points.

The last two seasons have seen Keane lose some of his Premier League consistency. This could be blamed on his disastrous £22.3 million move to Liverpool, where he never really settled. Life at Anfield was short lived and, after just 19 appearances and 5 goals, he returned to Spurs. Since then he has fallen behind other strikers and form has never really come his way. A loan move to Celtic was slightly more fruitful though, that saw him find the back of the net on 16 occasions in 19 appearances.

The transfer fees Robbie Keane has amassed throughout his career add up to around £75 million.

The Prospects

Due to Keane’s limited chances over the past year or so, his FPL transfer value has plunged dramatically from 8.5 last season to a current price of 4.8. Although it feels like he’s been around for ever, Keane is only 30-years-old and if he captures the form he is capable of then the Irishman could potentially be a steal.

With his reported £70,000 a week wages, it is very likely that Keane will be one of the first names on the West Ham teamsheet and, by popping up with a goal on his debut, he has already demonstrated his worth. His price and potential will certainly appeal to those who play a 3-5-2 and require a cheap bench option up front.

Keane’s arrival as well as the as yet untested attacking recruit Demba Ba, seem to have pushed Carlton Cole way down the Upton Park ladder. In an interview, post-Blackpool victory, Grant praised his new look team and effectively cemented their starting roles in the coming weeks:

“They are intelligent players and it is easier to play the football that we like with these sort of players, They play the football that we like, because they like to pass the ball and play intelligently, so it was easy for them to come in and help us to get the victory. They had a good partnership [Piquionne and Keane]. You have to remember that behind them that Scotty [Parker] and Mark [Noble] did a good job too. When everybody is doing well and playing our football, we have good team.”

The Hammers have a mixed bag of fixtures on the horizon (BIR, wba, LIV, STK, tot, MUN) with some tricky clashes against Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United. But with new found momentum behind them and the need to push out of the lowly depths of the relegation zone, Keane and West Ham could well earn results and offer decent returns.

    Morning Ladyboi's and girls.

For the first time in a while I've found my team pick problem free this week. Apart from who to start...

    Foster (away - West Ham)
    Begovic (Home - Sunderland)

I appreciate that Begovic is not a 100% nailed on starter, but I can always start him and Foster come in if he does not play.

Why do you say he is not 100% nailed on?

I'd go Begovic anyway, West Ham are looking pretty useful in front of goal at the minute, I cant see a clean sheet in that game

      one week or long term?

are you trying to catch up in points or stave off your opponent?

overall id go bent, but if you want to protect a lead, with so many berbatov owners, he could prevent an opponent trying to catch up when he has one of those 3-4 goal games. bent is better to make up ground and has better fixtures.

Fabianski's out for the rest of the season and Stockdale may not play another game so yes you need new keepers. Other than that I'd prioritise a new midfielder over downgrading Evra this week.

This is my masterplan: Wildcard for next week, then use my 1 free transfer to get 11 players out in GW28. Tell me what you reckon:

Foster (for DGW)/ VdS (for GW28)

    Huth/Simpson/Walker/Coleman/Koscielny

    Nani/Fabs/VdV/Brunt/Adam

    Tevez/Odimwinge/Torres

In the meantime got 2 freebies this week I may as well use, thinking Berba out for Torres or even Dzeko (would give me Tevez and Dzeko up front for 1 week only) And Zat Knight out for a Citeh defender, probs Koralov

    Any thoughts appreciated!

It's very easy to get caught up in this dgw-fixture chasing malarkey. I don't see BIR keeping a cs...ever. Everyone should have Bardsley, Coleman and Kelly. More than proved their worth.
Not sure what your issue with Bergovic and Scezny are. They rotate perfectly till season's end and Schesny is unaffected from 28 as you can play Bergovic instead.

They rotate perfectly if they play, which they aren't guaranteed to do. With keepers that cheap it's not easy to chop and change and you'll probably have to use 2 transfers if one starts getting rotated. Bardsley is overpriced and has had his lucky goals already, Kelly yes but not for a few weeks, Coleman fine but not for 27.

Bergovic plays league, Sorensen in da cup. Whinger has stated that Schhnzny plays as no 1.
Got Barsdley for 4.3 so most have missed the value but Sunderland are keeping cs against all and sundry.
Coleman is a season keeper particularly with the fix coming up. My vote for OOP of the season.

I'm not arguing about Coleman, I got him at 4.4 - I'm just not going to play him in 27!

Wenger's statement was ambiguous and he talks a lot of crap at the best of times.

Sorenson has played one cup game since his long term injury, that's it, you can't infer from that that's his entire role for the rest of the season.

I agree about Sunderland CS, I just don't fancy Bardsley, and I prefer Huth to Begovic.

Going to do N'Zog to Bentley either this week or next,
Can't decide if Blackburn at home is harder than West Ham away.
What do people think hold on to Zog for a week?

I don't care about the fixture, I would ALWAYS play N'Zogbia over Bentley (except for Bentley's doubles).

      Keep N'Zogbia for a week.

If you've got Odem up front, I honestly think Bentley is worth a stab. Brunt is totally off the boil at the moment, I've completely ruled him out. Thomas is looking decent, but I'd be happy with just Odem. Walcott could do well, but I'd be worried about rotation. Bentley is coming off the back of a great game against City with an assist and 3bp, by all accounts he ran the show from midfield. If you can hang on to him for DGW a couple of weeks later, even better.

I watched the West Brom game, and Brunt was very unlucky not to score and not to get an assist. He may not have produced in Fantasy points for a few weeks, but I'm still keeping him for the DGW.
I see interest in Bentley. He seems to be on free kicks but I'm also tempted by Gardner (on pens)

    Hi People,

    Some advice if possible!

This is my team and has been for two weeks and scored highly. However, i think it maybe time to axe berba using my free transfer. Your thoughts?

This is how my team would look this week if nothing changed

    Gordon (jaaskelainen

    Rafael, Coleman, (Djourou), Kelly, (Foley)

    Adam, Yaya, VDV, Walcott, (Dempsey)

Berba, Wazza ‘hooker lover’ rooney, Tevez (c)

I'd upgrade Yaya. Depending on your money, I'd go for one of the following: T. Cahill, A. Young, Meireles.

I think I'd keep both Berbs and Rooney was I in your shoes. It seems they're taking turns on scoring now.

Thanks - really can't decide whether to keep Foster or get Szczesny. I'm thinking Djourou's place could be gone with Vermaelen coming back so a keeper a better option, and Brum can't seem to keep a clean sheet anymore.

In all fairness their home games since their last CS has been: Tot, ManU, Ars, Villa, ManC.
A part from Villa I would not expect that any CS:s from any those games.

Currently have Rooney and Berbatov and one of them is going for Tevez. Who would you ditch?

Back to the topic of this report, is there any hope for Robbie Keane do we think? I know it's West Ham, but he doesn't half get in the right place at the right time.

Ps - Anyone else think he completely sliced that shot/goal vs. Blackpool. So lucky it bent like a banana into the corner rather than wide!

        All right.

Do they have some injuries or so, because Wilkinson has started the last 8 games?

My defence is already in tatters only 1 week after the wildcard and a Stoke def could really help me out.

last season and the one before, Wilkinson would play 5-6 games then not play for a while. He's not assured but I wouldn't be too concerned putting him in either. I've gone for Huth seeing as he's scored 5 this season
