With speculation rife over manager Avram Grant’s job security, inadequate performances leading to lacklustre results and a spot in the relegation zone being almost omnipresent; it is fair to say that West Ham have had a grim season. Since Grant waved what appeared to be a farewell to the Hammers crowd following the 3-0 loss to Arsenal however, Premier League results have turned a corner. The 2-2 draw away at Everton and a 3-1 victory on the road at Blackpool in midweek suggested that the Hammers are on the up.

Recent signings have also provided a boost and the deal that brought Robbie Keane from London rivals Tottenham until the end of the season looks set to be the most significant.

Since Rafael Van der Vaart’s arrival at Spurs, Harry Redknapp has often played just one striker and with Keane behind Jermaine Defoe, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko in the hierarchy, the Irishman found his opportunities limited, mustering just a handful of appearances this season.

The Ireland captain certainly feels he still has what it takes to compete in the Premier League though:

“I feel I have plenty left to offer at the highest level for at least the next four or five years.”

He lived up to his word and failed to disappoint on his debut for the Hammers by grabbing a goal a Blackpool. Under Grant, Keane looks assured of starts and has a hunger that could well prove vital to West Ham’s survival chances. He could also us Fantasy Managers some unlikely potential for the run-in.

The Statistics

After bursting onto the scene with Wolves as a teenager, where after 3 seasons he scored 29 goals in 87 appearances, he was snapped up by Coventry and once again impressed. After a few seasons of being passed around between Inter Milan and Leeds United, it was his fifth club Tottenham where Keane finally settled.

Moving to Spurs from Leeds for £7 million saw Keane find a home and some consistency, staying at White Hart Lane for six years; playing 197 Premier League games and scoring 80 goals in the process. It was the 2007/2008 season where he was most prolific in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) terms; Keane scored 162 points which included 15 goals, 7 assists and 22 bonus points.

The last two seasons have seen Keane lose some of his Premier League consistency. This could be blamed on his disastrous £22.3 million move to Liverpool, where he never really settled. Life at Anfield was short lived and, after just 19 appearances and 5 goals, he returned to Spurs. Since then he has fallen behind other strikers and form has never really come his way. A loan move to Celtic was slightly more fruitful though, that saw him find the back of the net on 16 occasions in 19 appearances.

The transfer fees Robbie Keane has amassed throughout his career add up to around £75 million.

The Prospects

Due to Keane’s limited chances over the past year or so, his FPL transfer value has plunged dramatically from 8.5 last season to a current price of 4.8. Although it feels like he’s been around for ever, Keane is only 30-years-old and if he captures the form he is capable of then the Irishman could potentially be a steal.

With his reported £70,000 a week wages, it is very likely that Keane will be one of the first names on the West Ham teamsheet and, by popping up with a goal on his debut, he has already demonstrated his worth. His price and potential will certainly appeal to those who play a 3-5-2 and require a cheap bench option up front.

Keane’s arrival as well as the as yet untested attacking recruit Demba Ba, seem to have pushed Carlton Cole way down the Upton Park ladder. In an interview, post-Blackpool victory, Grant praised his new look team and effectively cemented their starting roles in the coming weeks:

“They are intelligent players and it is easier to play the football that we like with these sort of players, They play the football that we like, because they like to pass the ball and play intelligently, so it was easy for them to come in and help us to get the victory. They had a good partnership [Piquionne and Keane]. You have to remember that behind them that Scotty [Parker] and Mark [Noble] did a good job too. When everybody is doing well and playing our football, we have good team.”

The Hammers have a mixed bag of fixtures on the horizon (BIR, wba, LIV, STK, tot, MUN) with some tricky clashes against Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United. But with new found momentum behind them and the need to push out of the lowly depths of the relegation zone, Keane and West Ham could well earn results and offer decent returns.

    What are the chances of Djourou playing both DGW games?

    Anyone know if Wenger's intimated that he's now ahead of Squillaci (who I think is now back)?

    I want to bring him in, but only if he's likely to play...

      I'd say a reasonable chance since Verm is back the following week for the Barce game, no need to rest Djourou.

                Perhaps the assumption that someone asking an idiotic question is an idiot is an unfair generalisation, for which I apologise.

                However, I make the point for the benefit of the masses, perhaps if we attach a stigme to the asking of the question people will eventually stop answering it.

    Morning people,

    Looking for some advice. I am wildcarding next week and have one free transfer for this week which I may aswell use. Pretty happy with my team overall for this week but there must be something I can do to strengthen for one week only?

    Team is...

    Gordon (Kingson)
    Coleman Walker Rafael (Hangeland, Enrique)
    Nani Walcott VdV Adam (Bale)
    RVP Bent Tevez

    Current options...

    a) Gordon -> Hart / VDS (money no object)
    b) Bale -> £10.2m midfielder - Silva? Cahill? (Would mean benching Adam)

    Cheers

    Hi guys,

    With upcoming fixtures in mind I really have no idea what to do with my team this week. Just slowly catching up on the mini league leaders lately and got to keep that momentum going. Any ideas?

    Foster, Gordon

    Rafael, Coleman, Alcaraz, Kelly, Djourou

    Fabregas, Nani, VDV, Brunt, Adam

    Torres, Tevez, Campbell

    2.8 in bank

    Wanted to get rid of Torres (possibly for Van Persie) due to fact I think he’ll be benched first few games and looks like they’re now not playing GW28. But neither is RVP…damn.

    Also worries about Rafael/Alcaraz injuries and don’t want to be left with playing Kelly at Chelsea. Worth a 4 pointer? Cheers

    Current team:
    Al-Habsi (Foster)
    Vidic, Hangeland, Coleman, (Djourou)(Kelly)
    Fabs, Nani, VDV, Adam, Dempsey
    VPersie, Tevez, (Campbell)

    I think I should first address FUL players, Hangeland -> Kolarov?
    Or is there a better move to do (with 0.1 in the bank)?

        ok, i will attempt to be helpful. 1 free transfer? what the dealio? if you have a free one, Im backing tevez as captain, so Id bring him in for rooney. Luiz may take Bosingwas spot, normally Id say you could start Bos and if he doesnt start, your bench player could take his place. but theres a chance, as Luiz is new, that he is subbed on for a spell, and I fear Boswinga out of the defenders could be subbed off. Maybe too much crystal ball speculation but Id go Adam.

          Morning, I L F. 🙂 No, I do not. Both teams in the double are lightning fast, and the games will pass him by, in my opinion. In addition, I think he's been "sussed" by opposing managers ...

    In oreder to get the WC team I really want I need to make 0.4m in trades over the week 27 window before finally confirming my team.

    Due to so many using their wildcard week 27 I imagine there will be immense transfer activity during week 27 that could allow me to acheive this. However, who do people think will think will go up 0.2 in that period for me to make profit? (not Fabs, RVP or Adam as will be keeping those so cannot cash in on the profit).

        Suprised at your opinion on this TM. I reckon at least 25% of the entire game will be WC'ing this week. There will be unprecedented transfer activity that could well cause some serious NTI shifts.

            I think your confusing FFS with the entire Game. by your reckoning just under 600,000 people will wild card. Not a chance, at least 1 mil if not more arent even playing anymore. Going by the generic nature of the teams everywhere a very large number of people already have. I think youll find its around 100k at most and thats over egging it.

              No i'm not.

              Have taken account that 50% of people just don't bother with their temas and that in the leagues I am playing (all the players in which are active) approx 50% have saved their wildcards until this week. Hence 25%.

      even though they dont have doubles for GW27, i could see Suarez or Torres rising twice if they have monster games this weekend. Something about new players or guys on new teams that makes people want to buy.

        Agree with Suarez - imagine there will be a large amount of Liverpool fans getting him in just for the sake of it, but if he scores on Sun may well see a huge rush.

        Torres not so sure as is so highly priced that difficult for players to get him in team, especially considering Chelsea fixtures.

        Was thinking considering DGW, following may make 0.2 -

        Foster
        Bently
        Fergusson
        Brunt
        Odem
        Walcott
        Djorou

    Torres for captain? Chelsea are undefeated at Stamford Bridge in 60 of 78 games (76.92%) in all comps versus Liverpool and the blues have scored 140 times in those 78 games (1.79 gpg) compared to Liverpool's 80 (1.03 gpg)

      Here u go mate,

      Arsenal Tottenham will have to have their game rearranged from 26th Feb(GW28). Now Arsenal have these fixtures:

      * 12th Feb - Wolves (GW27)
      * 16th Feb - Barcelona
      * 19th Feb - FA Cup 5th Round
      * 22nd Feb - Stoke (GW27)
      * 27th Feb - Carling cup Final
      * 1st March/2nd March - No Fixture Planned
      * 5th March - Sunderland (GW29)
      * 8th March - Barcelona
      * 12th March - FA Cup 6th Round

      So as you can see there is a spare slot on 1st March/2nd March for a fixture. Now if Arsenal or Tottenham get to the 5th round and draw their game this would mean this Date would be for the replay so Arsenal Vs Tottenham will not happen in GW28. If they don't have to face a replay the game could happen. I must stress this is not definite. It as something that could happen as Chelsea Vs Manchester United is on March 1st so they could easily put Arsenal Vs Tottenham there.

      I hope this has helped.

      Daniel

            Think Walcott will be a better shout this weekend as I think it's going to take Holloway another game to realise that Reid and Adam in the same midfield is not going to work.

            I just don't think there is enough graft in Reid to make the space that Adam requires made for him to make his passes. Also, Blackpool's midfield will be too easily played through leading to a lack of possesion for Adam to utilise and gain his BPs.

          He got a poxy goal to be fair, Daniel you should most definitely bench Adam and play Walcott this weekend if that is the decision you have to make, Walcott vs Newcastle should do better than Adam v City at home.

              Kolarov/Baines/Vidic
              Nani/Adam/VDV/Walcott/N'Zogbia
              Rooney/RVP(C)

              Foster/Bardsley/Simpson/DJ Campbell

              I am considering a 4 point hit for N'Zogbia OUT Cahill or Young IN, but am happy enough with pre WC team, Rooney finally paid off! I needed a bit of luck from him

    Back to my analysis paralysis hypothesis about this site. Many of the Noobs and general casuals have no idea about cancelled games in GW 28, and here we are, I am certainly, holding off on my WC until next week to see if the game is rescheduled or what, whereas many are oblivious and will have their teams loaded with Arsenal/Spurs/Brums and the Arsenal v Spurs game will get put back into GW 28 maybe, and bingo, I have spent a week working out how I will deal with the cancellation and all ramifications of same.

    So, with that in mind, does anyone know are we likely to know about the rescheduled game next week?

        I generally mean first time/casual players who check in and out and benefit from auto captain/auto subs, and fortuitous Anelka captaining for 10 weeks at a time!

        I just think it's ironic how much time we all spend on here, looking at our teams, and how things can go completely belly up even with all that planning, whereas the more casuals are oblivous to same.

      I am on my WC this week and will build around Spurs and Arsenal players with the proviso that I have two free transfers for GW28 if this game is not rescheduled.

      Two things, though. Even if the match was rescheduled within GW28, would you want up to 6 Arsenal/Spurs players when they would be H2H and the potential for returns would therefore, be possibly be reduced?
      Furthermore, a decision when this game will be played will have to be agreed with the police and what notice do the police require?

      strong team. save the transfer. i might consider coleman over rafael or nzogbia over adam, but I think its close and Id probably feel more comfy going Adam. Whos your 2nd keeper? if its someone with a decent home fixture I may consider over foster.

      ^Agreed. Coleman and Baines both have similar points return potential and Young/Lennon would be pushed to outscore Adam by 4 given his Bonus appeal.

    Dzeko guaranteed to start this weekend for City? Cant afford Tevez with my current setup but dont want to miss out on City's weekend fixture with WBA.

      No Balotelli still or Johnson for a while so think he will be nailed on with Silva behind? (though haven't watched them for ages!)

      In circumstances where you can't afford Tevez, my next option would be Silva, I would suggest N'Zogbia OUT Silva IN, good fixtures, and he is always simmering on the cusp of good points. For some reason I am not convinced City will blow West Brom away this weekend, and while I would be confident of a Tevez goal or two, I wouldn't be the same for Dzeko, but that's just me!

    I think the captaincy is not enough discussed here. It is the most important decision for FF.

    I see here a lot of lads are certain on DVD or Tevez but I personally think that Fabs is the best option. Who are everybody captaining and why?

      tevez, i agree fabs is safer, he has the highest floor but tevez definitely has the highest ceiling and I want to captain a hattrick just once, just ONCE!!!

        I changed From RVP to Tevez this morning, surely he has to have highest odds on a goal haul.

      Really difficult decision this week in that I have a number of options. Coleman, Tevez, VDV, Fabs, RVP and Nani are to mind and I struggling to make a firm decision. ATM, Tevez looks the outstanding candidate in that WBA are awful in defence and he is on pens and always viable for Boni plus Citeh are very strong in attack at the moment.
      Probably not go with Coleman as I perceive Everton conceeding and then would require an assist/goal to make up for the shortfall. VDV is key to Spurs but no certainty that Spurs will win this one whilst Arsenal at Newcastle is another of those games in which you would not be over suprised if Newcastle pulled off a victory. Nani, ermmm, well he's my No 2 candidate in that I feel an unbeaten Man U will win and he will be key in thier result.
      However, Tevez keeps it as he is at home against a weak WBA, on pens and reliable for those bonus points.

      Torres. I feel the service is going to be better. He is going to have someone up front with him instead of being stranded. And I do not think LFC's back line can match up with Chelsea front line. Its a risk as on paper Tevez,VDV and Fabs looks amazing, but the kind of risk that has given me 5 green arrows :).

    Considering Berba -> for Torres or even Dzeko (would give me Tevez and Dzeko up front for one week only) Is that crazy? Got 2 frees to use before WC next GW..

    Right, so late night WC planning last night. I think I have the perfect back 7 that needs no subbing (injuries permitting) Between weeks 26-33, then need a slight change 34-38

    Midfield good until 28 then two freebies

    Foster/Begovic (for a change!)
    Huth/Walker/Coleman/Djourou/Ridgewell
    VDV/Fabs/Nani/AYoung/Adam
    Tevez/RVP/Odemwingie

    wk 28 VDV or Fabs to Cahill and or Etherington
    and or RVP to Bent

    wk 29 Odem to Dembele

      Very similar to mine.

      Friedel, Foster
      RJohnson, Walker, Coleman, Huth, Sagna
      Fabs, VdV, Nani, Brunt, Adam
      Tevez, RvP, Odemwingie

      If Ars-Tot is on
      GW28 transfers: Sagna->Wolves defender, Brunt->Cahill
      otherwise
      GW28 transfers: Sagna->Wolves defender, Fabs->Cahill
      (and then get Fabs back for Brunt in one of the following weeks)

    Tevez, because Man City is the team most likely to score that I have any players from. Tevez is involved in a huge % of Man City's goals.

      My main rival in IKTS puts both his banker and insurance on the same fixture every single week.Can someone explain this strange tactic to me?It seems to be working though,because he is sitting in the top 2k atm.

        This is done because if your banker goes wrong it's minus 20 or 30, whereas a normal wrong result is only minus 10
