With speculation rife over manager Avram Grant’s job security, inadequate performances leading to lacklustre results and a spot in the relegation zone being almost omnipresent; it is fair to say that West Ham have had a grim season. Since Grant waved what appeared to be a farewell to the Hammers crowd following the 3-0 loss to Arsenal however, Premier League results have turned a corner. The 2-2 draw away at Everton and a 3-1 victory on the road at Blackpool in midweek suggested that the Hammers are on the up.

Recent signings have also provided a boost and the deal that brought Robbie Keane from London rivals Tottenham until the end of the season looks set to be the most significant.

Since Rafael Van der Vaart’s arrival at Spurs, Harry Redknapp has often played just one striker and with Keane behind Jermaine Defoe, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko in the hierarchy, the Irishman found his opportunities limited, mustering just a handful of appearances this season.

The Ireland captain certainly feels he still has what it takes to compete in the Premier League though:

“I feel I have plenty left to offer at the highest level for at least the next four or five years.”

He lived up to his word and failed to disappoint on his debut for the Hammers by grabbing a goal a Blackpool. Under Grant, Keane looks assured of starts and has a hunger that could well prove vital to West Ham’s survival chances. He could also us Fantasy Managers some unlikely potential for the run-in.

The Statistics

After bursting onto the scene with Wolves as a teenager, where after 3 seasons he scored 29 goals in 87 appearances, he was snapped up by Coventry and once again impressed. After a few seasons of being passed around between Inter Milan and Leeds United, it was his fifth club Tottenham where Keane finally settled.

Moving to Spurs from Leeds for £7 million saw Keane find a home and some consistency, staying at White Hart Lane for six years; playing 197 Premier League games and scoring 80 goals in the process. It was the 2007/2008 season where he was most prolific in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) terms; Keane scored 162 points which included 15 goals, 7 assists and 22 bonus points.

The last two seasons have seen Keane lose some of his Premier League consistency. This could be blamed on his disastrous £22.3 million move to Liverpool, where he never really settled. Life at Anfield was short lived and, after just 19 appearances and 5 goals, he returned to Spurs. Since then he has fallen behind other strikers and form has never really come his way. A loan move to Celtic was slightly more fruitful though, that saw him find the back of the net on 16 occasions in 19 appearances.

The transfer fees Robbie Keane has amassed throughout his career add up to around £75 million.

The Prospects

Due to Keane’s limited chances over the past year or so, his FPL transfer value has plunged dramatically from 8.5 last season to a current price of 4.8. Although it feels like he’s been around for ever, Keane is only 30-years-old and if he captures the form he is capable of then the Irishman could potentially be a steal.

With his reported £70,000 a week wages, it is very likely that Keane will be one of the first names on the West Ham teamsheet and, by popping up with a goal on his debut, he has already demonstrated his worth. His price and potential will certainly appeal to those who play a 3-5-2 and require a cheap bench option up front.

Keane’s arrival as well as the as yet untested attacking recruit Demba Ba, seem to have pushed Carlton Cole way down the Upton Park ladder. In an interview, post-Blackpool victory, Grant praised his new look team and effectively cemented their starting roles in the coming weeks:

“They are intelligent players and it is easier to play the football that we like with these sort of players, They play the football that we like, because they like to pass the ball and play intelligently, so it was easy for them to come in and help us to get the victory. They had a good partnership [Piquionne and Keane]. You have to remember that behind them that Scotty [Parker] and Mark [Noble] did a good job too. When everybody is doing well and playing our football, we have good team.”

The Hammers have a mixed bag of fixtures on the horizon (BIR, wba, LIV, STK, tot, MUN) with some tricky clashes against Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United. But with new found momentum behind them and the need to push out of the lowly depths of the relegation zone, Keane and West Ham could well earn results and offer decent returns.

    My team for this week:

    Foster,
    Rafael, Coleman, Huth, Djourou
    Fabregas, Nani, Van der Vaart,
    Tevez(c), Berbatov, Van Persie

Bench: Al Habsi, Adam, Brunt, Kelly

Do you agree with who I’ve benched and who I’ve captained?

I think Tevez is a must have this week-end.

1/Given the patchy fixtures (I want to avoid 3 ARS players in GW 28) and likely rotation of RVP anyway, does it make sense to do RVP->TEVEZ now?

2/I can also see Coleman scoring this week-end for Everton. Does it also make sense to do PAINSTIL->COLEMAN?

    Would you do 1, 2 or 1+2 for a 4 pt hit.

Just an observation(slightly obvious one at that) from a few teams posted on here but does everyone have at least two out of Nani, Adam and Van Der Vart in their midfield? I have 3 at the minute but as a differential am taking Van Der Vart out after this gw. But is there any other mids at say 9 under who will outscore these 3 in the forthccoming weeks. Personally I think Nani is a must have playing at the top side in the league n being the main provider until Valencia cmes back at least. I think Adam might fall away in form a bit too. Then again Ive said that before n too often never had him in my team. Anyways my risky differential in place of Van der Vart will be Arteta n not Cahill!!

I'd say most have Nani too.

Arteta is playing too deep to score well in FPL - and he's obviously doing a good job there for Moyes because he's been there for weeks and weeks.

Cahill is a much better choice imho; what about Merieles? (sp?) Cheap, and reasonable fixtures after this week if you disregard Man Utd.

VdV has an away double coming up, don't forget (and could still play Ars on GW28)

I feel i need to get Tevez back in for this GW to go alongside RVP and Berbs which means finally getting rid of Carroll at a .5 mil loss. The best way I can see to do this is Carroll > Tevez. Hangeland > Baird (made .1 mil on Hangeland)...

Is this worth or 4 point hit? or do I just get rid Berbs for Tevez (at snother .4 loss)

Following on from the debate on captains by Daniel.f and my decision to choose Tevez, here are some basic facts. Man City will score against WBA this weekend and surely Tevez will play.
So in the games in which TEVEZ HAS PLAYED AND CITEH HAVE SCORED, Man City have scored 31 goals of which Tevez has scored 15 goals, 5 assists and 24 bonus points. I am happy to proceed with Tevez as captain based on those stats ( which I accept are slightly fudged for the basis of my statement).

That Man City will score and Tevez will play are assumptions rather than facts - fair assumptions mind you.

That said I do like those stats on Man City goals. The only problem is they don't reflect the new role tevez is playing now with Dzeko in the team and the stats that are available for that aren't developed enough to rely upon.

Modric -> Lennon looks a nice and easy transfer.
Lennon has started the last 3 games. I can also keep Lennon in for the next GW, I don't expect Modric to be back by then.

Going for a 5-man midfield with massive points potential:
    Walcott-Ethers-Nani(C)-Adam-Lennon

Trying to prepare for Double GW bonanza...

Forwards and Midfield look fine as they are, but i've got major keeper frailties and could do with revamping my back line, any suggestions would be greatly apreciated!!

    Current team for GW26:

    Al-Habsi
    Djourou, Hangeland, Coleman
Fabregas, Adam, Nani, Van der Vaart
    Van Persie, Tevez(C), Berbatov

    Bench: Stockdale, Brunt, Bardsley, Kelly

well you have to do it now or next week anyway. Dempsey has rubbish fixtures now, stockdale and nasri wont play and theres better value out there than alcaraz so I would do it. Get some birmingham and arsenal for there doubles I rekon.

Convention would say save your transfer for the DGW. However Nasri may well drop in price again before then and/or your target rise in price.

Think about who you would prefer out of Theo and Ethers for the combination of GWs 26 and 27 and get whichever of those you want in this week.

Both Theo and Ethers have doubts over whether they will play all three, for me i'd go Theo as Arsenal fixtures over the three games are nicer.

I actually think my point is always valid, we all see, and post, the "my buddy hasn't looked at his team for 6 weeks and had Carew captain and now he plays for Stoke and has scored!" kindof posts, my point was simply that, speaking from my own point of view, someone who enjoys playing the game and posting on here, the luck of the casual player quite often trumps the perparation and obssessing on here, I have no problem saying I spend alot of time on this game.
