Gameweek 26 saw 256 fantasy managers battle it out in the first round of the Members Paddy Power Cup. With scores spanning a range of 78 points and an incredible average score of 75, heavy defeats were the order of the round, and ties decided by the slightest of margins evoked more heartbreak than normal. To see the full list of results click here, for a brief round-up of the highs and lows of the first round read on…

We had a total of nine centurions in the round, with Mark on the end of an absolute tonking from one of them:

  1. Civan 103 – 52 Mike
  2. Dick Fran Dyke 101 – 40 Ham
  3. Goose 104 – 66 CROUCHINHO
  4. Walky Talky 100 – 75 Chuckie
  5. stebwfc 107 – 86 alex234
  6. RafaMC 108 – 47 Mark
  7. Aldershot Rejects 102 – 78 AliMcGlashan
  8. fiacloir 105 – 85 Jimmers
  9. xabi_14 100 – 86 n1jimmy

Although achieving the top score in the round, RafaMC didn’t  inflict the heaviest defeat on poor Mark. That title goes to Cesc no Drogs who put the lowest scorer of the round, NuttyWutty, to the sword 93 – 30, putting a whopping 63 points between them. The fifth fixture on that list between stebwfc and alex234 was the highest aggregate scoring match-up of the round.

Drubbings aside, and there were six fixtures decided by just a single point. MagNanimous, biegs, Gavin, Boofstein, Dangeroussnails and Write Home, edged out bantamstu, Peter, kieran0426, Johnny Unitas, fudokung and Attila the Bum respectively.

Closer still was trisonetwo‘s 86 – 86 draw with tomcon, with the former advancing thanks to his superior overall rank.

The luckiest manager of the round is probably Geraldo1977, who squeezed into the second round with the lowest score good enough to get a win, as he saw off the aptly-named Cannon Fodder, 54 – 50.

At the other end of that spectrum, was Zizo and soulman27, who must bemused as to how they haven’t made the next round after losing 95 – 90 to Vanilla Kush F.C. and 94 – 90 to our very own Granville, respectively.

Although I think another extremely unlucky manager was Akers, who lost to pompeyfan somehow.

Congratulations to the 128 fantasy mangers progressing to the second round. The fixtures for the next stage will be announced in an article at the end of the week.

The prizes for the competition, provided by Paddy Power, are a free £150 bet for the winner, £75 for the runner-up and £50 for third place.

I have 5 out for GW28 as it stands (Stockdale/Foster, Murphy, Djourou, VDV, RVP).

    Would you -

    a) save the free transfer to use 2 in GW28?
    b) use the free transfer on a Birmingham, Tottenham or Arsenal player then take a 4 point hit in GW28 to field 11?
    c) use the free transfer on a DGW player that also plays in GW28 (Shawcross or Huth probably)?
    d) I don't understand / care

.7m in the bank so funds don't quite stretch unfortunately.

I'm thinking Djourou may be back GW29 while Murphy is not getting a look in with Ridgewell restored to LB, so Murphy out should be the priority.

I'm half hoping for VDV to be injured to free up funds then I'd take a 4 point hit this week.

Djourou out Huth in is the obvious and correct move for most.

But what about those of us who already own Huth!?

He is a big CB in a team that plays the ball into the box a lot. 2 goals and a assit in a single game shows the impact he has. So you aren't just relying on clean sheets for points. IN a season with so few clean sheets, he is the first name in my defence

Plus think about the opportunities he is going to get against Arsenal without Djourou in that second DGW fixture. Can't see Stoke not getting a few from set-pieces and Delap throw-ins in that game and Huth would be the favourite to do so.

He has the potential for attacking points.

He has a double in GW27.

He actually plays in GW28 too.

He's a nice easy replacement for frantic Djourou owners. Get him in, sometimes you don't need to box clever.

It's those of us who already have Huth that are left with a poser on Djourou...

At least you allready have the 19 odd pts that Huth scored the last gw. I would take that anyday of the week. Getting rid of Djourou is the easy part.

Is berba worth getting rid of due to fixtures?

    instead you can have
saha, zigic or bent who have doubles with better chances of scoring

Bent doesn't have a double as far as I can tell, but it's a case of whether you think Everton will do well at Bolton and Saha stays fit and firing for the DGW.

Zigic could outscore Berbs without actually scoring if he plays both Birmingham's DGWs.

My take on Huth is this - this season clean sheets are rarer than hen's teeth, so look for defenders who are most likely to give you attacking points. Huth (and Kolorov) fit the bill more than anyone else I can think of.

Yes - that's my defence....as my fifth option, I'm gambling on Chelsea's new signing Luiz. Their fixtures get easier, and he is a reasonably cheap route into their defence

its out of Nani, VDV and Tevez. I have the same problem. Currently VDV is benched for me if only playing one game. One game, post Champs league and away is not as convincing as one Tevez game against his old club and one Nani game at OT.

Good financial state or not I doubt they would turn down that kind of money.

Not sure about Arsenal being a better club.

                  30,000 word count right?
It would be somewhat biased, in that I view him as a reformed character and footballing general whereas most others see him as a mental yob.
An article that is worth considering is the best club sides of all time - mine would without a doubt be Milan 89/90

Am I crazy for thinking of taking a 1 week punt on Arshavin if VDV is unfit? I know he's been playing rubbish but with Nasri out and Rosiscky having an awful game the other day I think he might play both games of the double.

    Present front 8 is
    Fabregas/Young A/Lampard/Gardner/Nani
    Rooney/Bent/Vela

what do you think is the best course of action to do,
    a - make transfer(s)
    or
b - stick with (as can field good 11 GW28+), who to bench this week?

Kelly Johnson R Huth (Kolarov, Coleman)
    Adam Nani Walcott Nolan (VdV)
    RvP Tevez Odemwingie
    5.2 in the bank

I`ll have 8 DGW players and planning to do Walcott -> Cahill next week to be able to field 11. I`m not sure about Huth yet as I have Begovic too..you reckon he is a "must have"? Would still like to have a ManU defender but it would have to be instead of Huth. Any improvements?

I should give a reason as well. Barton is better value than Bentley, on penalties and will play every game. He also plays gw 28 as well. Brunt and Odem is WBA overkill double or not. Also Brunt appears to have done nothing for about two months now.

Odem is on pens. Brunt does pop his crosses over still and takes some free kicks. But there's definitely better mid prospects. Check his stats and ask yourself will there really be a dramatic turnaround over the next two games.

It was only really going to be for this GW though, was planning on bringing in Cahill the week after?

Or you think it would be better to go for someone like Barton/Etheringotn? or maybe Bently?Gardner? Would mean i would have 3 Birmingham players but i could transfer out 1 then and still be fit to field a full 11.

You need to ask yourself the question that if your form was to have a dramatic turnaround then who would you want to be playing if you were Brunt and would you prefer to be home or away????

or perhaps tevez to odem and then buy tevez back next gameweek? could be a stupid move but could also generate more points... all depending on what mood berb is in... don't know... nice rank by the way!

Thanks I had Berba for more than 10 GW and always he had 2pts for me, so Tevez stays, other options are DVD or Nani out.

In the same boat, can not believe it. Now I am thinking between Kolarov and Coleman. Walker to the bench IMO.

Can see Kol be rotated to keep backline tight. Coming on for a one-pointer if Man U take the lead.

If he does start can see lots of time and space for Nani as Kol bombs forward.

    For next week:

    Huth or Carr?

    Etherington or Bentley?

    Adam or Jarvis?

    Any combination of the above?

    Cheers!
