Mick McCarthy’s side go into their double Gameweek fresh from shattering Man United’s unbeaten record with last weekend’s 2-1 victory at Molineux. That fine result and performance again demonstrated how Wolves have raised their game against the big sides this season, having already earned 1-0 wins over Chelsea and Liverpool. It’s against relegation rivals and mid-table mediocrity that Wolves have struggled; that’s the reason behind their lowly position in the table.

Despite confidence gleaned from the United win, Fantasy Managers are unlikely to give more than passing glance at what’s on offer from McCarthy’s squad. With a trip to the Emirates coming this weekend however, one can’t help but wonder if Wolves can capitilise on a fragile Arsenal defence, with Arsene Wenger’s side likely to have one eye on their Champions League with Barcelona four day’s later.

The daunting trip to North London is followed by a Black Country derby match against managerless rivals West Brom – a totally unpredictable scenario if ever there was one.

The Prospects

Wolves have the worst away record in the division with just a single win, 9 goals scored and 24 conceded. That makes pretty chilling reading going into two consecutive away matches.

Their one victory did however come against Liverpool at Anfield, a result that was surely a significant nail in Roy Hodgson’s coffin and a victory that Wolves will surely cling to as they approach the clash with the Gunners. Wolves have lost the four away trips that followed the Liverpool win, conceding 10 goals in the process. The omens don’t look good for the visit to Arsenal then, given that Wenger’s side have won 4 of their last 5 home matches and have averaged 2 goals a game in that spell.

Arsenal’s Champions League ambitions may well be a distraction and we could see rest and rotation in practice. Wenger could still field the likes of Nicklas Bendtner and Marouane Chamakh however – players who will be eager to impress and who will be expected to have the talent to inflict damage on a suspect Wolves back four.

The derby match with West Brom eight days on surely offers a better prospect. Goals look likely here, with the Baggies having scored 10 and conceded 10 in their previous 5 home matches. West Brom will face West Ham the week before and much will depend on their confidence following that encounter, plus of course, the impact of a new manager – should he be in place by February 20.

One factor to consider before losing total interest in Wolves as a prospect – they are one of three sides who follow their double fixture with a home match. Wolves will take on Blackpool at Molineux in Gameweek 28, a fixture that promises attacking returns for those brave enough to take the gamble.

The Likely Lads

Matt Jarvis has been Wolves’ biggest Fantasy earner this season, but his simmering form has completely wilted of late and his assist for George Elokobi’s goal against United was his first Fantasy points since Gameweek 15. A return to form? Maybe, butNenad Milijas looks the stronger goal threat from midfield. The Serbian international regularly contributes a couple of goal attempts a game, as our Members can see via their OPTA stats. He is also a major factor at direct free-kicks.

Kevin Doyle is as close as you get to a form player amongst McCarthy’s squad – his 2 goals and 4 Bonus Points in his last 4 league starts hints that, if anyone is to emerge from the double Gameweek with profit, it will be the Irishman. Whether Fantasy Managers will find room for the 5.0 investment up front is another matter entirely.

While potential looks limited going forward, defensively Wolves look a bleak prospect. Any investment in this area would need to hope for attacking points, and with Jody Craddock still sidelined through injury and Kevin Foley also fighting back to fitness, there’s no obvious candidate. Ronald Zubar has posed the biggest goal threat of late, although it was George Elokobi who proved decisive in the win over United.

Cheeky Punt

Jamie O’Hara has arrived at Molineux on loan and, although he’s short of match fitness, he chipped in with a goal attempt on target against United and 2 blocked efforts in a 58 minute appearance. With 2 goals, 4 assists and an impressive 25 Bonus Points to his name at Portsmouth last season, O’Hara has pedigree and could be a factor over the two games.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      1. It won't happen at all unless Arsenal want it to happen and Spurs want it to happen and the TV works out. Nevermind the FA Cup. Arsenal had the chance of a break in a run of 8 consecutive games 3/4 days apart. So it's not all that likely.
      2. FA Cup

Neither thing will be reslolved in a positive way (guaranteed to take place) until after this week's deadline so forget them now.

Like you say, not all about goals. Doyle's a decent player who has the misfortune to player for Wolves. I disagree that Odem's obviously better than him.

Doyle scored 13 goals in 06/07. Probably about what Odem will manage this season.

For DGW no way, but in all seriousness, if you look at the season ticker, it's not the best but there's only one non-blue game. I'm actually considering one Wolves player to balance out all the hefty midfielders needing cash to pay for.

    Current strikeforce for GW27 is:

    Tevez, Odem, DJ Campbell

Tempted to get in RVP for Campbell but with threat of RVP rotation tempted to stick with DJ. SO votes please:

    1) Stick with DJ Campbell
    2) Change to RVP (would mean also Djouru > Another DEF)

      nzogs to young
      djourou to huth
cant see crap rooney scoring so at worse thats -2
nzog crap fixtures surely young will outscore
djourou possibly only 1 game ,huth 2 games -2
so it feels like a 4 point hit at the very worse ,downside thght id got rid of kneejerkitis ,seems not ,will seek help, good luck with your decision.

Not to debate a decision you've already made, but in that scenario it's not a 4 point hit as actually 4 less points over all than you would have got if you hadn't done anything. You take a hit in the hope/expectation that you'll make more than that back. For example, even if Djourou only plays the second game, he's probably got more chance of a CS than Huth does in both his games, and the chances of other returns from him a pretty low odds. But then again, he could get another massive one and Djourou doesn't play at all, so each to their own. Good luck to you.

Although going with my gut had me captain VDV over Tevez last week so who knows...

It's funny that in the early days of the Byrds and Dylan that bands were expected to the hits of the day when they played live, as well as their own songs, hence why so many of them released their versions of the same songs as singles. Bizarre to think in America what was being played on East Coast radio, the kids on the West Coast may never have heard. How different to instant global access to everything. Anyway....

Hits are more likely to work in DGW's cos (except for defenders) you only lose 2 points if they play twice against a player without 2 games (or zero points if you would have less than 11 players playing otherwise)

Probably Sagna for clean sheets and the slight possibility of attacking points. But this isn't an easy DGW to predict for defenders. Huth for an attacking defender, but he may not get a cleanie. Birmingham have great matchups, so Roger Johnson's an option, but last week's clean sheet was their first since the beginning of November.

Guess I'd say Sagna, Johnson, Huth, in that order.

I wouldn't bank on Djourou playing both matches. BBC site says he hopes to be fit for the weekend but this doesn't look like a direct quote from the player, but rather the Swiss FA - and this might be a misinterpretation as I've read elsewhere that they claim he 'could' be training again in 7 days. If this is the case it looks like he'll be missing for the weekend. Walcott has a couple of days before he rises in price so I'd advise keeping Djourou in for now but consider swapping out if it looks like he's definitely missing the Sunderland match.

Interesting reply, thanks. Worth considering though that if I got rid I wouldn't be playing a DGW player in his place so playing one game out of two wouldn't actually be that bad a consequence, especially considered in light of the rotation risk of, for example, Walcott, who would be able to come in in midfield. I'm gonna go have a lie down...

    Just been doing some stats.

WBA have scored 10 goals in their last 5 home games, Wolves and Wham have both conceded 10. Makes Odem wingie seem a lot more attractive.

What's the word on Gordon gents? serious knee injury, surely must be to pull out of international duty. Or is it one of them where he just can't be arsed to play for Scotland and faked it?

I only wildcarded him last week, i'd hate to have to take a 4 point hit to ship him out if he's out for a long period of time.

Oh crap, I'd missed the injury news (if it's real). I did hear however that Bruce was upset with his last performance and he wasn't guaranteed to be number 1. I brought him in two, with I'd looked elsewhere now.

When is Nasri back? I think the only way fab would be rested for the 2nd match is if nasri is fit to fill in his place. my other opinion is that fabs may well play both matches if they lose to barca, as wenger will realise that the league is more likely. RVP i think is a good candidate for rest though, as arsenal have good cover for him. Although RVP even if he only plays the 1 match will still score well anyway.
