[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles

Having beaten West Ham and subsequently climbed out of the drop zone, Birmingham will be looking to take advantage of two home fixtures in the upcoming double Gameweek 27. The club may have the Carling Cup Final with Arsenal just around the corner, but the games against Stoke this weekend, then Newcastle the following Tuesday, are just as important to their season as the Wembley run-out.

With Birmingham also playing two matches in Gameweek 29 there will be plenty of Fantasy investment in McLeish’s men, though with no league match in Gameweek 28, careful planning will be needed, particularly for those bringing in two or three Birmingham players.

The Prospects

Birmingham have had a real problem keeping clean sheets in recent times, with the West Ham shut-out, perhaps surprisingly, their first in ten league matches. They may have lost just twice in the league at St Andrews, but a closer look shows they have won only one of their last seven home games; they’ve also averaged just goal per game in home matches this season.

The January window has allowed McLeish to add quality to the first team, though, with the acquisition of David Bentley and Obafemi Martins adding proven Premier League talent to the ranks. Martins will be expected to add much-needed firepower and competition up front, and he could now be unleashed by McLeish having cut through visa red tape and help boost Birmingham’s goal-fetching credentials.

Their first opponents Stoke have failed to score in their last two games on the road and have one of the worst away records in the league, losing eight of twelve away from the Britannia. Having said that, they don’t lose by big margins and have conceded only 18 goals, that’s just a couple more than Man United.

Birmingham will then face a Newcastle side who, despite their brilliant comeback against Arsenal, are a team struggling for form. Alan Pardew’s outfit have failed to win any of their last four games and have one victory and one clean sheet in their four games on the road under their new manager.

Birmingham will fancy their chances of two home wins then, and prospects look pretty decent for returns from both ends of the field.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper “Save†points means Ben Foster is always more likely to get higher returns than any of the Birmingham back four; at present, he has scored 18 more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points than highest-scoring defender Roger Johnson, illustrating his far superior Fantasy consistency. Foster is already the second highest owned goalkeeper; plenty more are set to draft him in before next weekend with his price currently settled at 5.2 in the FPL.

Anyone intent on transferring-in a Birmingham defender, however, could do worse than picking up the aforementioned Roger Johnson. The centre-half has been the most consistent performer in the back four; as well as claiming 2 goals this term, Johnson has been awarded 13 of the 16 Bonus Points given to Birmingham defenders in the season. Johnson can be acquired for 5.1 right now.

Top scorer and club penalty-taker, Craig Gardner has been one of the true successes of this season, following his move from Aston Villa. Gardner grabbed the goal that clinched the Blues’ Cup Final spot and has been a real talisman for McLeish’s side. He’s not one to reap the Bonus Points though. David Bentley has already clocked up more Bonus in four starts for Birmingham than Gardner has all season. Bentley has made the right-wing berth his own since the loan move from Spurs and has shown signs of mirroring his Blackburn form from a couple of years back. His Bonus potential and the consistency of his delivery from the right-flank certainly makes him a consideration.

Cheeky Punt

As mentioned in Sunday’s Scout Notes, Nikola Zigic’s record, when given 90 minutes, is actually fairly respectable; he’s taken part in seven full league games and returned 4 goals and 2 assists, including one in each of his last two starts. McLeish praised him after the vital West Ham win, suggesting that the towering hitman, priced at just 5.3 in the FPL, is finally getting to grips with the English game and is beginning to look like a fixture in the starting XI.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Gentlemen, my current team is;

    Szczesny (Stockdale)
    Coleman, Evra, Toure, (Hangeland, Clark)
    Nani, Adam, VDV, Brunt (Ferguson)
    Rooney, Torres, DJ

Thinking of taking Nani and Rooney out for Fabs and RVP for the DGW, but then United have a double GW the next week – So completely stuck for ideas – Chasing the top pack in my league (I’m 4th and 30 points behind). Any suggestions would be much welcomed!!!

Man Utd's double is not confirmed yet. If Chelsea beat Everton in the FA cup replay then it's just the 1 game for Man Utd and no gameweek for Chelsea.

Torres is a get rid, I would do:

      Torres>RVP
      DJ>Odemwingie

I think DJ is a little prone to rotation is all, otherwise I wouldn't suggest transferring DGW for DGW.

      Hope this helps!

Gotta say despite two home games, I have failed to get motivated by the Birmingham players. Inconsistent, inability to score or clean sheets relates to just the one player from BCFC in Carr. Cheap offering with maybe the potential of a cleanie, if i'm lucky.

    Good article, Sir P.

GW28 was a problem, so with that identified another Brum player may come in from GW29. Other problem I see, is that the likes of Nani, Tevez et al are benched (especially this GW) in favour of inferior players fromBrum. Not over keen on that.

As for clean sheets, Birmingham are eighth in PL behind 1 Manchester City 26 12
            2 Sunderland 26 11
            3 Chelsea 25 11
            4 Man Utd 25 10
            5 Liverpool 26 10
            6 Fulham 26 9
            7 Arsenal 25 8
            8 Birmingham 24 7

with 6 clean sheets from thier first 14 games and just once in thier last 10.

Nice, I had Foster for the first 13, replaced him with Gordon and transferred him back in for GW 26. Obviously I still missed a load of his cleanies due to them coming away but still.

Carr is enough for me as well. Don't think they'll keep a cleanie this week. The Stoke away game had 5 goals in it and I can see the Toons score as well. If I'm wrong I have at least one defender to minimize my point losses...

just like to own up to being the biggest idiot ever this week whilst doing my wildcard under the influence of alcohol. Thought it would be fun to transfer some players out and see how much money I had accumulated but then realised I wanted to keep some, have lost 0.4 on coleman and have had to lose VDV for the time being as well. A complete and utter pr**k!!!

schoolboy though and cant believe I have done it. The omens are not good for this week, currently have the standard choice of:
        Foster (begovic)
        Kelly/R Johnson/Huth (Coleman) (Kolarov)
        Fabs/Walcott/Adam/Barton (Nani)
        Tevez/Wingie(c)/RVP

im also not too worried about ditching nani, if rooney hits form and with valencia and park returning i think he wont deliver that much

my WC was used during transfer deadline. When it looked guaranteed Adam was going to Liverpool, I WC'ed him out. Lost .2 bringing him back in. Not nearly as catastrophic as your case it would seem, but should provide some comfort knowing we all make mistakes. Now if you ever do that again, no sympathy from me, and you should resign from fantasy football. 🙂

Next week I'm going to be short of a keeper who is playing and because I have Stockdale, want to keep Foster and don't have any spare cash I need to ship someone out before I can get Begovic.

I've already used my free transfers this week to get Huth and Barton so I need to drop 4pts to do so and I figure it's better doing it this week to get a DGW player in to soften any blow. But WHO?

Johnson is the most obvious choice for Hangelaand but it will still leave me short of players next week if the Arsenal v Spurs game doesn't get scheduled for next week.

pls tell me how i can improve this team for this dgw

    foster (begovic)
    kelly kolarov coleman (djourou evatt)
    nani adam meireles vdv (n’zogbia)
    tevez rvp odemwingie(c)x

any changes? i am worried as i only have 4 dgw players of which 2 are unlikely to play both games

as such, i was thinking of brining in lennon for vdv? also should i start djourou? or bring in huth and start him over coleman as djourou will be a doubt, plus arsenal don’t look so solid after last week!!1???

    thx

You can just use 1 transfer he means and gain back a second one to have 2 next week.

He means get Carr in this week. If you only use 1 of your 2 frees, you'll have 2 again next week to deal with the missing GW players.

This DGW and blanks in Gw28 are killing me.

Kind of settled on taking a 4 point hit.

    What would you do?
    A:
Kingson - Szczesny (begovic as second keeper)
    Hangeland - Roger J
    Nzog - Adam / Etherington

    B:
    Hangeland - Roger J
    Dempsey - Etherington / Adam
Nzog - Walcott (hope that arsenal get the GW28 fixture).

Would you choose Adam infront of Ethers despite the booking issue?

    Input very much appreciated.

No way I would buy in Adam now. You could end up with 2 games from him until GW 31 with one being Chelsea at home.
