[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles

Having beaten West Ham and subsequently climbed out of the drop zone, Birmingham will be looking to take advantage of two home fixtures in the upcoming double Gameweek 27. The club may have the Carling Cup Final with Arsenal just around the corner, but the games against Stoke this weekend, then Newcastle the following Tuesday, are just as important to their season as the Wembley run-out.

With Birmingham also playing two matches in Gameweek 29 there will be plenty of Fantasy investment in McLeish’s men, though with no league match in Gameweek 28, careful planning will be needed, particularly for those bringing in two or three Birmingham players.

The Prospects

Birmingham have had a real problem keeping clean sheets in recent times, with the West Ham shut-out, perhaps surprisingly, their first in ten league matches. They may have lost just twice in the league at St Andrews, but a closer look shows they have won only one of their last seven home games; they’ve also averaged just goal per game in home matches this season.

The January window has allowed McLeish to add quality to the first team, though, with the acquisition of David Bentley and Obafemi Martins adding proven Premier League talent to the ranks. Martins will be expected to add much-needed firepower and competition up front, and he could now be unleashed by McLeish having cut through visa red tape and help boost Birmingham’s goal-fetching credentials.

Their first opponents Stoke have failed to score in their last two games on the road and have one of the worst away records in the league, losing eight of twelve away from the Britannia. Having said that, they don’t lose by big margins and have conceded only 18 goals, that’s just a couple more than Man United.

Birmingham will then face a Newcastle side who, despite their brilliant comeback against Arsenal, are a team struggling for form. Alan Pardew’s outfit have failed to win any of their last four games and have one victory and one clean sheet in their four games on the road under their new manager.

Birmingham will fancy their chances of two home wins then, and prospects look pretty decent for returns from both ends of the field.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper “Save†points means Ben Foster is always more likely to get higher returns than any of the Birmingham back four; at present, he has scored 18 more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points than highest-scoring defender Roger Johnson, illustrating his far superior Fantasy consistency. Foster is already the second highest owned goalkeeper; plenty more are set to draft him in before next weekend with his price currently settled at 5.2 in the FPL.

Anyone intent on transferring-in a Birmingham defender, however, could do worse than picking up the aforementioned Roger Johnson. The centre-half has been the most consistent performer in the back four; as well as claiming 2 goals this term, Johnson has been awarded 13 of the 16 Bonus Points given to Birmingham defenders in the season. Johnson can be acquired for 5.1 right now.

Top scorer and club penalty-taker, Craig Gardner has been one of the true successes of this season, following his move from Aston Villa. Gardner grabbed the goal that clinched the Blues’ Cup Final spot and has been a real talisman for McLeish’s side. He’s not one to reap the Bonus Points though. David Bentley has already clocked up more Bonus in four starts for Birmingham than Gardner has all season. Bentley has made the right-wing berth his own since the loan move from Spurs and has shown signs of mirroring his Blackburn form from a couple of years back. His Bonus potential and the consistency of his delivery from the right-flank certainly makes him a consideration.

Cheeky Punt

As mentioned in Sunday’s Scout Notes, Nikola Zigic’s record, when given 90 minutes, is actually fairly respectable; he’s taken part in seven full league games and returned 4 goals and 2 assists, including one in each of his last two starts. McLeish praised him after the vital West Ham win, suggesting that the towering hitman, priced at just 5.3 in the FPL, is finally getting to grips with the English game and is beginning to look like a fixture in the starting XI.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Who to bench out of Cahill, Fab, Adam, Young, Nani, Tavez, RVP and Odemwinge.

Tempted to drop Tevez but is that crazy after a hatrick?

I just said to kiggs85 at the bottom of last page - No way I would buy in Adam now. You could end up with 2 games from him until GW 31 with one being Chelsea at home.

Even a Birmingham player would get you 4 games, 3 at home with their blank.

Couldn't agree more. He's coming out of my WC team. Not going to get sucked in by the double gameweek blindness, as you say over tyhe next 4 GWs will be restricted to two maybe three games and with the Arsenal/Spurs/Brum no GW28 issue it's just not worth having the risk in there.

However almost 6,00 have transferred him in today already. Hoping the mugs keep going so he goes up again before I boot him out Saturday morning.

But you have two keepers so as long as one of them is it shouldn't be a problem. Presumably most people thinkign about changing keepers are on a WC too so they can just get in someone else with a good fixture next week.

If you want a differential for the sake of having a differential then you're on to a loser imo.

If you get a differential in it should be on merit - it's certainly not better if you don't think they will score as well. I don't personally think keepers are where you're gonna make you're ground up either imo.

R Johnson, Huth , Kelly, Vidic
    Adam, Etherington, Brunt
    Odemwingie, Tevez, RVP
    (Nani, Coleman, Richardson)

What do u guys think? Prob gonna captain RVP but wary that he may not play both games other option is Odemwingie i spose.

Odemwingie is a risky, but potentially great choice.

I'm so tempted to ride the rollercoaster, but unfortunately, I'm not in a postition (either top or close second) in my minileagues to take risks.

Slow and steady for me, unfortunately.

:/ Perhaps Kelly out of all of them. But I'm not sure I'd bother, that's a good line up.

Vidic's fixtures are tough, and he's less effective without Rio, but I guess it depends when you bought them all.

I got 538 in first 13 weeks and 827 in the second 13. Still another 12 to go though so I might end up doing crap again 🙂

Then for gw 29 Odem > Saha

Yes, VDV long term, but i'll get him in after Spurs get dumped out ECL by Milan. At mo he is struggling to make first leg of Milan game and so with there being finite places for Spurs/Arsenal/Brum players due to GW28 i'm not prepared to waste one of those with a player who isn't going to play this weekend.

    Advice needed! Current team:

      This are my current concerns:

      1. Don't like Al Habsi as a rotating keeper

      2. Feel like my defence could use one more 'bankable' player

      3. Brunt is really pissing me off. I know he has a double GW but I'm sick of him just getting 2pts for 90 mins and occasionally losing a point through a yellow card. I wonder if WBA are in disarray with managerial situation too.

      4. Is Berbatov now in his 'cooling off' period?

      5. Injury situation of Djourou, VDV and RVP.

I can't understand the Huth love. At the moment i have him in my WC team because i'm hoping to get a double rise out of him, but i'd rather take him out and play Coleman i reckon.

Stoke could easily get a complete hiding at Arsenal and come out of it with their defenders on minus points. Then you have an away trip to Brum where i don't expect they'll score.

Am i missing something? Or are people just expecting them to do better against these teams?

I have Walker, Kolarov and Coleman for next week. Realistically i could get Huth in for either RJohnson or Kelly but i don't think Huth will outscore either of them over the next couple fo weeks and i have Begovic for next week too.

GW 28, home to WBA is the main value of having Huth at the moment, they've conceded at least 2 in their last 9 games.
Slim pickings for that GW and with the odd goal/assist maybe in the DGW with outside CS chances he's the best all-rounder for the next 2 weeks for me in defence.

Its still a double though, and he is a goal threat. Also – look beyond to the dreaded GW28, he has a nice fixture, whereas a number of other dgw teams have no fixture. Also fixtures for next 3 are good. your view is slighlty blinkered

See above, i've got Kolorov, Walker and Coleman for next week.

I will probably be fielding 10 anyway but the only way that would change with a defensive switch is to go with Huth over RJohnson, but i'd bet on RJohnson to outscore Huth over the next 2 gameweeks even with his blank, and then he has the double in 29 too so he is definitely in for me.

OK, I made my changes for this week (in the end I decided against too many DGW-Players - hope that doesn't bite me in the ****)

Please give me your thoughts about this team:

    Coleman, Huth, Cathcart, (Dejourou), (Bardsley)
    VDV, Meireles, Adam, Fabregas, (Nani)
    RVP (C), Berbartov, Tevez
