Having beaten West Ham and subsequently climbed out of the drop zone, Birmingham will be looking to take advantage of two home fixtures in the upcoming double Gameweek 27. The club may have the Carling Cup Final with Arsenal just around the corner, but the games against Stoke this weekend, then Newcastle the following Tuesday, are just as important to their season as the Wembley run-out.

With Birmingham also playing two matches in Gameweek 29 there will be plenty of Fantasy investment in McLeish’s men, though with no league match in Gameweek 28, careful planning will be needed, particularly for those bringing in two or three Birmingham players.

The Prospects

Birmingham have had a real problem keeping clean sheets in recent times, with the West Ham shut-out, perhaps surprisingly, their first in ten league matches. They may have lost just twice in the league at St Andrews, but a closer look shows they have won only one of their last seven home games; they’ve also averaged just goal per game in home matches this season.

The January window has allowed McLeish to add quality to the first team, though, with the acquisition of David Bentley and Obafemi Martins adding proven Premier League talent to the ranks. Martins will be expected to add much-needed firepower and competition up front, and he could now be unleashed by McLeish having cut through visa red tape and help boost Birmingham’s goal-fetching credentials.

Their first opponents Stoke have failed to score in their last two games on the road and have one of the worst away records in the league, losing eight of twelve away from the Britannia. Having said that, they don’t lose by big margins and have conceded only 18 goals, that’s just a couple more than Man United.

Birmingham will then face a Newcastle side who, despite their brilliant comeback against Arsenal, are a team struggling for form. Alan Pardew’s outfit have failed to win any of their last four games and have one victory and one clean sheet in their four games on the road under their new manager.

Birmingham will fancy their chances of two home wins then, and prospects look pretty decent for returns from both ends of the field.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper “Save” points means Ben Foster is always more likely to get higher returns than any of the Birmingham back four; at present, he has scored 18 more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points than highest-scoring defender Roger Johnson, illustrating his far superior Fantasy consistency. Foster is already the second highest owned goalkeeper; plenty more are set to draft him in before next weekend with his price currently settled at 5.2 in the FPL.

Anyone intent on transferring-in a Birmingham defender, however, could do worse than picking up the aforementioned Roger Johnson. The centre-half has been the most consistent performer in the back four; as well as claiming 2 goals this term, Johnson has been awarded 13 of the 16 Bonus Points given to Birmingham defenders in the season. Johnson can be acquired for 5.1 right now.

Top scorer and club penalty-taker, Craig Gardner has been one of the true successes of this season, following his move from Aston Villa. Gardner grabbed the goal that clinched the Blues’ Cup Final spot and has been a real talisman for McLeish’s side. He’s not one to reap the Bonus Points though. David Bentley has already clocked up more Bonus in four starts for Birmingham than Gardner has all season. Bentley has made the right-wing berth his own since the loan move from Spurs and has shown signs of mirroring his Blackburn form from a couple of years back. His Bonus potential and the consistency of his delivery from the right-flank certainly makes him a consideration.

Cheeky Punt

As mentioned in Sunday’s Scout Notes, Nikola Zigic’s record, when given 90 minutes, is actually fairly respectable; he’s taken part in seven full league games and returned 4 goals and 2 assists, including one in each of his last two starts. McLeish praised him after the vital West Ham win, suggesting that the towering hitman, priced at just 5.3 in the FPL, is finally getting to grips with the English game and is beginning to look like a fixture in the starting XI.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

in exactly the same spot at the moment FW.
Altho i'm currently playing Kelly over Tevez & Berba. Im just haunted by the Emirates performance from Mancini.
Got a feeling i'll buckle and play Tevez and Nani in the end. Kelly 1st Sub, Berna 2nd.

Absolute madness to put Kelly on the bench... home against Wigan, it's not just a great chance of a clean sheet but attacking points as well.

OK chaps. After much agonising. RMWCT:
    Foster (Begovic)
Huth Kelly Rafel R Johnson Coleman
    Arsh Fab Lennon Barton Nani
    RVP Berb Odem

I then take a four point hit Arsh to Cahill and RVP to Saha to field 11 in GW28.
After the Everton DGW I switch Saha to Tevez and maybe Lennon to VDV.

Thoughts? I'm not sure on Arsh but he's a decent differential in my mini league. Considering giving him the armband but that's a HUGE gamble. Not entirely convinced by Lennon either.

Am I mad in thinking of bringing in Rafael for Vidic in my WC team?

Man U fixtures don't look great but I can also see them getting clean sheets in these games. If I go ahead with the above, can free up 2.4m extra...

    Thoughts please !

I think there are better options out there for the next 3 weeks.
R.Johnson? If you want an attacking wing back...then how about either Baines or Walker. Both have decent fixtures coming up.

At the moment I my WC team is

        Foster/Robinson
        Vidic/Kelly/Carr/Coleman/Kolarov
        Nani/Cesc/Adam/Barton/Walcott
        RVP/Tevez/Odemwingie

Getting rid of Vidic could enable me to upgrade Carr to R Johnson (my main rival has him) or also upgrade Coleman to Baines. Walker I have not looked at, but he looks a good prospect.

Thinking also getting rid of Vidic enables me to have more free cash if I want to upgrade Adam due to his yellow cards...

What d'ya think? Also nice ranking this year ! 🙂

Don't particularly like the article, except for that bit about Bendtner. Did anyone see the game last night? Most of the time that player is inept in the box, then he comes deeper and deeper for the ball giving it away all the time with a lousy first touch. I defy anyone without an agenda to rate him highly enough to play in a top 4 side.

He's not good enough for a top 4 team yet imo. But i think he could get there (in fairness he could probably do a job at spurs though 😉 ).

I think the problem with the Bendy debate is that people always take up the two extremes, i.e. either he's terrible, or incredible.

Honestly he's neither but i think he is a decent player who shows glimpses of being very good. He obviously has it in him but needs to develop alot as well.

            I haven't seen anyone say he's incredible.
I agree he's not terrible and could easily play in the premier league for a mid table club. I'm just not sure he could ever 'get there'. His touch isn't good enough and other than good heading ability I don't see that much else.

Then why the 'I defy anyone without an agenda to rate him highly enough to play in a top 4 side.' comment?

That goal he scored a few weeks ago shows that he has it in him. I think he's good at holding up the ball and getting in to space as well.

It looks great. Its obvious you have a very high team value. Defence is perfect IMO. Midfield is again very strong however you are of course liable if Fabregas hits form.

For this week alone I would have Odem ahead of Bent, but Bent for the long term.

I am a bit worried over Fabregas getting in on the points, but after having him in for such a time and getting nothing I'm giving up on him. Walcott is also getting stats similar to a striker so seems like a short to medium term better option. Time will tell.

I was considering Odem but I'm not overly keen on putting a player in with the intention of removing him the week after, also West Brom's current situation creates too much uncertainty for my liking.

I'd probably go with B. Birmingham have a solid defence at home, Walcott is playing well at the moment as has a decent chance of cleaning up and Bent is consistent and has to be feeling good after his goal for England.

            Foster/Begovic
            Walker/Kolarov/Kelly/Johnson/Coleman
            VdV/Young/Cahill/Walcott/Nani
            Tevez/RvP/Bent

Don't know if you missed it above, but there it is.

I'm keeping Nani in, while his immediate fixtures aren't great it isn't long until Man U have BOL/whm/FUL/new/EVE. I don't really consider them bad fixtures. I'd also lose 1 mil if I took him out and would have a certain difficulty getting him back in.

Better than Rafael maybe. Fray Bentos made a silly comment there, 3 United players is not a fail, although I would prefer 2 myself. They are defeated just once this season and irresepective of the opposition you can correctly expect your United players to return a solid to nice points haul.

Have to agree with Bentos that 3 United players is too many considering their fixtures. I've personally gone with Bent over Berbatov, Villa have good fixtures and Bent is consistent.
I'd personally remove Brunt for someone like Bentley but that's just because I feel there's too much uncertainty around West Brom and how they'll come out of losing their manager.

      Otherwise it seems pretty decent.

i agree he may get a goal, but the odds of more than one goal or assist vs pool keeping a CS at home vs wigan. Id say the CS is 50/50 as a conservative estimate and tevez involved in more than 1 score is about 5 to 1

A gut feeling is OK, but there is no reason logically to say that Wigan the lowest scoring team in the division will score against a Liverpool side at Anfield with 4 clean sheets in a row.

Not much in it - Tevez 15/8 to score, Nani 13/5 - but Nani gets you more points if he scores (and for a clean sheet). I don't have Tevez but I do have Rooney (11/8), and I'm still undecided.

Well, the thing is, it will be quite dry. Usually I make a jus with the pan juice, deglazed with some sherry vinegar, and adding the butter from the spinach.

But that's not enough for the mash really. Chps are kind of better.

Sounds good but you'll be hungry an hour after you've eaten it. Thai Red chicken curry - now you're talkin. Mmmm...chicken...

Guys back From Holiday, and after missing 3 weeks of football and news - was wondering what the malouda situation was - is he now bench fodder as Torres anelka and Drogs are leading the line?

        SHould i get rid asap??

carlo's diamond formation produced nothing, maybe a different formation will mean malouda back in the mix, but i wouldnt wait around for it if I could help it.

In fairness that is a question you could ask about the entire Chelsea team at the moment, but yes find someone with DGWs and scoring now, not in ancient history.

Played my second WC in GW25 with this GW in mind so I would have 2 free transfers to play after this week is over.

Hoping that VDV and Djourou are both fine and I can then use my two freebies to adjust my team post GW 27

        Foster (Begovic)
Djourou, R Johnson, Kelly (Vidic, Coleman)
        Fabs, VDV, Adam, Nani (Brunt)
        Berba, Odem, RVP (c)

        Djourou- R Johnson
        VdV- Walcott
        NZog- Brunt for minus 4.

Idiocy? Should have another 2 free transfers to sort things out next week if Arse/Spurs game isn't going ahead...

How are you getting 2 free transfers back in one week? The Arsenal/Spurs game is NOT going ahead at the moment. The IF is whether it might be scheduled to fit in were Arsenal not to draw in the Cup. It's not been pencilled in as a prospect yet.

I have 3 free transfers now. You can only use 2 per gameweek. My understanding was that the 3rd free transfer carries over to the following week. I could be wrong though. I haven't been in this situation before!

:-D, it's just a bit of fun, prefer just talking to people rather than being an Arsene Voyer on their teams. I'm some where in the 80K, going for my 6th green arrow in a row though and had 9 in the last 11wks, happy days.
