[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles

Having beaten West Ham and subsequently climbed out of the drop zone, Birmingham will be looking to take advantage of two home fixtures in the upcoming double Gameweek 27. The club may have the Carling Cup Final with Arsenal just around the corner, but the games against Stoke this weekend, then Newcastle the following Tuesday, are just as important to their season as the Wembley run-out.

With Birmingham also playing two matches in Gameweek 29 there will be plenty of Fantasy investment in McLeish’s men, though with no league match in Gameweek 28, careful planning will be needed, particularly for those bringing in two or three Birmingham players.

The Prospects

Birmingham have had a real problem keeping clean sheets in recent times, with the West Ham shut-out, perhaps surprisingly, their first in ten league matches. They may have lost just twice in the league at St Andrews, but a closer look shows they have won only one of their last seven home games; they’ve also averaged just goal per game in home matches this season.

The January window has allowed McLeish to add quality to the first team, though, with the acquisition of David Bentley and Obafemi Martins adding proven Premier League talent to the ranks. Martins will be expected to add much-needed firepower and competition up front, and he could now be unleashed by McLeish having cut through visa red tape and help boost Birmingham’s goal-fetching credentials.

Their first opponents Stoke have failed to score in their last two games on the road and have one of the worst away records in the league, losing eight of twelve away from the Britannia. Having said that, they don’t lose by big margins and have conceded only 18 goals, that’s just a couple more than Man United.

Birmingham will then face a Newcastle side who, despite their brilliant comeback against Arsenal, are a team struggling for form. Alan Pardew’s outfit have failed to win any of their last four games and have one victory and one clean sheet in their four games on the road under their new manager.

Birmingham will fancy their chances of two home wins then, and prospects look pretty decent for returns from both ends of the field.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper “Save” points means Ben Foster is always more likely to get higher returns than any of the Birmingham back four; at present, he has scored 18 more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points than highest-scoring defender Roger Johnson, illustrating his far superior Fantasy consistency. Foster is already the second highest owned goalkeeper; plenty more are set to draft him in before next weekend with his price currently settled at 5.2 in the FPL.

Anyone intent on transferring-in a Birmingham defender, however, could do worse than picking up the aforementioned Roger Johnson. The centre-half has been the most consistent performer in the back four; as well as claiming 2 goals this term, Johnson has been awarded 13 of the 16 Bonus Points given to Birmingham defenders in the season. Johnson can be acquired for 5.1 right now.

Top scorer and club penalty-taker, Craig Gardner has been one of the true successes of this season, following his move from Aston Villa. Gardner grabbed the goal that clinched the Blues’ Cup Final spot and has been a real talisman for McLeish’s side. He’s not one to reap the Bonus Points though. David Bentley has already clocked up more Bonus in four starts for Birmingham than Gardner has all season. Bentley has made the right-wing berth his own since the loan move from Spurs and has shown signs of mirroring his Blackburn form from a couple of years back. His Bonus potential and the consistency of his delivery from the right-flank certainly makes him a consideration.

Cheeky Punt

As mentioned in Sunday’s Scout Notes, Nikola Zigic’s record, when given 90 minutes, is actually fairly respectable; he’s taken part in seven full league games and returned 4 goals and 2 assists, including one in each of his last two starts. McLeish praised him after the vital West Ham win, suggesting that the towering hitman, priced at just 5.3 in the FPL, is finally getting to grips with the English game and is beginning to look like a fixture in the starting XI.

Cant decide whether or not to do Berba OUT Odem IN.
I want to bring in Cahill next week and will need to take a 4pt hit then anyway to free up the cash.

In same boat... think I will do it.... would need to take hit to field 11 then though if no ARS / TOT in 28. I'll just have to hope it goes ahead 🙂 safest is to do nothing and save transfer... but as dell boy says....

    Fab. Wal. Lennon/VDV. Barton. Adam/Brunt

True but surely it's a case of do or die. Having said that no-one in the mini league's gonna have 11 DGWers with a WC next week so might just go with the run of the mill DGW11. Jesus as if worrying about my own team wasn't bad enough. Going for the max weekly score is a nice distraction though

Yes. I noticed my router has been acting up recently and streaming HD movies(wireless connection to the sky router)is not as fast as i would like. I'm thinking of switching to the 200mbs Ethernet Homeplug.I was hoping anyone here moved from wireless connection to the homeplug solution

          I have.

The office (or broom cupboard) at home was as far away from the wireless router as you could get and so had it dropping out all the time.

I originally ran an ethernet cable through the loft and back down into the office however I've since bought some relatively cheap (£50 or so) Powerline adapters and had no problems with them what so ever.

If it's on the same ring main then it should be OK, although they don't like to work if you use extension cables - they have to go directly into the wall, which can be a pain.
I found it more reliable to use a Catz wireless network adapter.

    Nani
    VDV
    Adam

Choose 2 of the 3 to play.

Each has a downside; Nani only plays one game against hard opponents, Adams on 9 yellow cards, and VDV might not play at all (but if he does will probs get 10 points)

    Thoughts?!

Who are the rest of your options? I'd bench Nani personally, if you have Adam don't see the sense in benching him because he might get a booking. And VDV even if it's just Blackpool away it's still better than Man City at home.

    Harper (Hart)
    Huth R.Johnson Simpson (Kelly, Vidic)
    Nani VDV Adam Fabregas (Nzog)
    Odem, Tevez, RVP

been mulling the simpson vs kelly choice in my head as well. Im going to put simpson in. Maybe he only gets 3 points and kelly 6, but id rather flush those 3 points than see newcastle finagle a CS out of one their games, or pool somehow leak a goal.

andy carroll is a good shout in that price range once he returns. i might just bench odem until carroll is back. otherwise maybe a newcastle forward, or shift a midfielder for a cheaper one and upgrade odem for a more expensive striker. i dont think there are a lot of strikers in that price range to get good points hauls as there are midfielders.

Arsenal Tottenham will have to have their game rearranged from 26th Feb(GW28). Now Arsenal have these fixtures:

          12th Feb - Wolves (GW27)
          16th Feb - Barcelona
          19th Feb - FA Cup 5th Round
          22nd Feb - Stoke (GW27)
27th Feb - Carling cup Final
          1st March/2nd March - No Fixture Planned
          5th March - Sunderland (GW29)
          8th March - Barcelona
          12th March - FA Cup 6th Round

So as you can see there is a spare slot on 1st March/2nd March for a fixture. Now if Arsenal or Tottenham get to the 5th round and draw their game this would mean this Date would be for the replay so Arsenal Vs Tottenham will not happen in GW28. If they don't have to face a replay the game could happen. I must stress this is not definite. It as something that could happen as Chelsea Vs Manchester United is on March 1st so they could easily put Arsenal Vs Tottenham there.

The Gunners have conceded a goal every 251 minutes of PL football with Johan Djourou in the side this season. Without him, they have conceded a goal every 54 minutes.

Afternoon gents, hopefully i can trouble someone for some advice!

I have 0.3 in the bank and want to make 2 transfers only this week. My ideal was mgp >> bentley and dj campbell >> odemwingie. but i'm 0.1 short.

So as a compromise is mgp >> bentley and adam >> brunt a good shout? I like west broms double a lot and wanted to get in on a birmingham outfield player too.

this would give me the following team with 7 dgw players:
    foster
    evra, coleman, djourou (injured possibly)
    fabs, nani, brunt/adam, bentley
    tevez, rvp, dj campbell

bench (stockdale, a young, foley, bardsley)

    any comments please?

No keeper next week. And no free transfer because you'll need it to sort out an outfield player or play 10 (9 if Adam is suspended)

Thanks for everything Charlie, you've been a good contributor to my team but i've had an offer I just can't refuse. Joey is on Pens and corners, allows me to get Fabs in and isn't such a dirty b@****d that he is going to miss 2 games any time soon.

    It's been a pleasure.

BTW, before you go could you just make sure you pick up a yellow on Saturday. Thanks

and Rafael van der Vaart could be rested for this Saturday's match at Sunderland in order to be fit for Milan after straining his calf against Bolton. http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_6743124,00.html

It's a tough one. If he doesn't pick up a yellow at the weekend then he'll play both and could easily have a huge haul. Seems far from unlikely really.

But going forward the yellow card is imminent so for planning ahead i think getting rid does seem sensible, even if it could hurt this week.

It's a good side, Baines over Coleman is a bit wasteful. Everton don't get cleanies and 7m is a lot. I had him for weeks and he did OK for me, just expected a bit more for his price.

I'm in support of losing VDV. An injury doubt, no Bale or Modric and a Milan game on the horizon are justifications enough.

Yeah like. Good for upcoming weeks especially in Baines, Kolarov and Walker playing so advanced up the field within games. Keen on the Ashley Young thing in that Villa have great fixtures and it really is a potential for Villa to rattle in a few at Blackpool and hopefully Young being instrumental in those affairs.
      Keepers rotate well and midfield.
Only slight concern is injury/suspension could result in you taking a point hit in GW28 but there again, we might all be in the same boat!!

Agreed. Would be very suprised if he didn't get a booking. Think he is chasing a lot more shadows now with the energy levels in the Blackpool team going down due to the fixture back log. Don't think it would have helped that he played midweek.

Quite an fpl conundrum Chelsea atm. Overpriced and inconsistent but also the only team other than arsenal that can deliver regular 3/4 goal hauls against mid-table teams home or away.
I'm planning to bring in torres (who looks ridiculous in a blue shirt btw) for gw 29. Yeah he's expensive and there's plenty of good value around but the way the fixtures line up screams goals galore - blp, MCY, sto, WIG, wba, WHM, TOT. And probably 2 dgw's in there.
Looking at a forward line of rvp, tevez, torres from gw29.
What do you guys reckon? Surely there will be some huge scores, too expensive to be considered a must have (chelsea attacker)?

Ok, feel free to rip this wildcard team to shreds, but here we go:

        Rafael, Kelly, Coleman, Walker, Kolarov
        VDV, Fabregas, Nani, Brunt, Adam

Putting Fabregas in leaves me with 0.0 in the bank - so would you leave Walcott in instead?
