Chelsea’s poor form continues as they crash out the FA Cup in round four, leaving Europe as their only real crack at silverware this season. Birmingham keep up their great cup form, Stoke blow away Brighton and an unimpressive Man United XI see off a Crawley side that will no doubt be patronised as “plucky” in many of this morning’s broadsheets.

Carlo Ancelotti dropped Nicolas Anelka and Michael Essien to the bench for Chelsea’s fourth-round replay at home to Everton and, with both January big-money signings ineligible, Didier Drogba returned to the starting line-up, in a game that also saw Yury Zhirkov return from a calf injury sustained back in November. Chelsea continued their recent goal-shy ways, however, failing to score within the 90 minutes for the third game in succession. Frank Lampard’s goal at the end of the first period of extra-time looked like clinching victory, but a fantastic Leighton Baines free-kick with one minute of the match left took the game to penalties. Misses from Anelka and Ashley Cole allowed Phil Neville to step forward and knock the holders out the cup.

As Andy has previously mentioned, this Chelsea loss has a significant knock-on effect in terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL). With Ancelotti’s side now out of the FA Cup, this upcoming gameweek 28 will see Man United playing twice; first away to Wigan on Saturday afternoon before travelling to Stamford Bridge three days later for the showdown with the champions.This game will be Chelsea’s next domestic match and Ancelotti will surely have his title-holders fired-up for such an occasion. A Scouting the Doubles piece on this is imminent.

Following Everton’s limp display at Bolton last gameweek, David Moyes made three changes to his starting XI for the Stamford Bridge showdown, with Phil Jagielka, Leon Osman and Jermaine Beckford earning recalls. With only one clean sheet in their last sixteen league games, Everton haven’t exactly been offering much in defensive Fantasy Returns, but this gutsy showing will hearten those who are considering any Toffees defenders for their kind upcoming run of league fixtures. Moyes’ team will no doubt be buoyed by this victory and Everton -sitting just three points off the drop zone- will now need to push on and bring this form to the league.

With next week’s Carling Cup Final undoubtedly in mind, Alex McLeish made eight changes from last midweek’s league match with Newcastle for Birmingham’s home tie against Sheffield Wednesday. Ben Foster, Craig Gardner, David Bentley and Nikola Zigic were all benched, with Cameron Jerome partnering Obafemi Martins up front for the first time. After Jean Beausejour grabbed the game’s opener, Martins found the net for the first time in a Birmingham shirt and left-back David Murphy grabbed the third.

Alexander Hleb looks like facing Cup Final heartbreak against his former club, though. Having supplied the assist for Birmingham’s first two goals, he was then stretchered from the field with a knee injury before the half hour mark and replaced by Bentley. McLeish has indicated the midfielder will have a scan in the next 24 hours, with the club currently unsure of the severity.

Matthew Etherington passed a late fitness test on his back to take a place in the Stoke starting line-up for the home match with Brighton, but lasted just 38 minutes before being replaced. Tony Pulis rested Dean Whitehead and played John Carew up front with Jonathan Walters, meaning both Ricardo Fuller and Kenwyne Jones sat on the bench. The front pair rewarded their manager’s faith with a goal apiece, with Walters also grabbing an assist for Ryan Shawcross’ third.

Man United’s starting XI at home to Crawley bore little resemblance to their usual line-up, with only Rafael a regular starter, in a team that also included the likes of Michael Carrick, Anderson and Javier Hernandez. Anderson, struggling with a knock from early on, was replaced at the end of the first 45 minutes by Wayne Rooney, whose only contribution was collecting a yellow card late on. Sir Alex Ferguson must be hugely disappointed by the performances of his fringe players, with not one of them managing to impress in a thoroughly uneventful Old Trafford match.

    Anyone care to comment,

    My team is linked I haven't made a transfer and have one free, I can rest VDV, VP and Fabs, and still just get 11 for this game week, the only person on the bench I can afford to get rid of is Fabs as his price didn't increase too much
    I'm tempted not to bother making a sub this week , I have Vidic and Nani for Man utd cover but I have to play all my defenders anyone have a good idea if I should just do noting?

      I think you have a solid team. You should save the transfer. I don't really see any pressing needs.

          West Ham wont be a pushover. But their defence is porous. Which is why I'm guessing you want to keep Kuyt.

          VDV is the main man at Sp*rs. Yes his form has been poor recently. Kuyt isn't the focal point of Liverpool's attack.

      You definitely want Tevez for the upcoming fixtures, more so than VdV, So I'd say A. Hopefully Kuyt does something in the mean time.

      VDV has pretty good fixtures in future, if you can wait to see if Cahill returns to form and/or VDV gets injured again maybe do that. Of course if you can't field 11 then maybe you have to do it, but like the lads said get rid of Kuyt

          I'm not feeling Utd defenders for the double.... Vidic and Evra are so expensive and Rafael isn't at all guaranteed to play.

          I'll probably do RVP > Rooney, and have Nani (c).

        Just watching that video, he was absolutely all over Messi, especially in the second half.

        I reckon he'll go on to become a serious centre back, one of the best in the league. He reads the game well, is quick and is very competent in possession. He just needs to get a little stronger to be properly competitive in the Premier League.

      I have the same (as millions of others do) predicament. Nani has an immense return for his goals/assists...but...chelsea away. I can see him doing something at wigan, but not so much at the bridge. Tevez against fulham, i'd fancy him for a goal. I have opted for tevez, only coz chelsea away is a shi**y place for most.

    As Taz was looking for a new football shirt on the previous page: Back in 1974, the German TV programme "Das aktuelle Sportstudio" had a surreal report about how the Bundesliga's kits might be made that little bit more exciting.

    The first part of the piece shows a disgruntled Günter Netzer staring at existing first-team shirts. But after 45 seconds, a fashion expert and his team of helpers are invited to display some radical new designs - using the medium of interpretative dance. The new kits never caught on, but, y'know, they really should have done:

    I have 10 active players this week (although 3 Man Utd DGW players) with one free transfer.

    I think Cesc --> Cahill is the obvious transer.

    I don't think that I want to transfer out any of my Ars/Tot players (VDV, RVP and Djourou).

    Just bring in Cahill and hope everyone plays?

      Gives me a double gw player that rotates perfeclty well Home/Away with Foster until gw38.

        Two problems as I see it:

        Utd don't keep too many cleenies.

        Added to this, VDS becomes poor value but more significantly, prohibits flashing the cash elsewhere on more point-inducing players.

        Thirdly, you should be picking the best team out there not determined by who your opponent has.

        Naughty, naughty.

    a) Djourou -> Walker
    b) Stockdale & Fabs -> VDS & Cahill (4 point hit)

    a) means i can potentially field 10 and have 2 doubles in GW28 and 2 doubles in GW29 before my 1 free transfer that week

        Haha, just read them after I posted this... I'm very undecided - given my lack of starters and doublers for GW28/29 I'm swaying towards b) above. Losing Fabs is an issue for me (especially as an Arsenal fan), but with Nasri and Walcott both viable options i may just do Adam -> one of them around GW30

          Look Cahill I think everyone will do, so that's prob a given especially with fixtures for everton.

          I agree with jafa, that Manu prob won't keep many CS away from home but what are your other options? A cheap keeper. But if the keeper does not keep a CS then you lose -2 on the trsfr.

          I'm still not sure and busy playing with my team at the moment. Maybe I go back to my original thought of not playing a keeper this week and spending my 2 free transfer on changing my midfield.

          Big Q is who will score more: a keeper or a midfielder. Im trying to think longterm, and saying I'm never going to play my reserve keeper after this week, but my 2 midfielders that im bringing in will play from now until gw 38.

            Look at it this way: You can never guarantee your newly transferred keeper will keep a clean sheet, and you're not going to use transfers you don't have to on your keeper. But what you can do is plan your keeper combo for the remainder of the season with a fair degree of confidence that a goalie who's currently first choice will probably play every game...

            And therefore you don't have to redeem the 4 points immediately, but look at it over the whole season.

              I think what I like about b) is that for 4 points I effectively have 3 starters (VDS x2 and Cahill) vs none (Stockdale & Fabs). Add to the mix that VDS and Foster rotate perfectly to the end of the season and I think it's a decent move. Even if they only get 2 points each (unlikely be that bad) then i'll be +2 points net of the hit.

              Being without Fabs is a risk, but if i decide to get him back in I could do it in a couple of weeks.

    Thanks Teddy. Got 2 free transfers and thinking
    Carr -> Coleman
    Fab -> Cahil

    That gives me 10 playing with VDV, RVP, and Djourou on bench. Or else I can take a 4 point hit to field 11 players, which I can do by doing RVP -> Rooney

    good morning. afraid ive succumbed to PET syndrome (post-early transfer syndrome). a roll of the dice im sure will be mocked by the masses.
    2 free transfers made: Rvp/fabs out, cahill/rooney in.

    GW28 Myhill (for his one and only appearance)

    Huth, Coleman, Kelly, Simpson

    Nani(C), Cahill, Adam

    Rooney, Berbatov, Tevez

    (Szczesny, Brunt, VDV, Carr)

    GW29 RVP back if still healthy for either Berbs or rooney. 14 DGWers from GWs 27-29 with no hits, having used 2nd WC in GW25. enough in bank to drop brunt for nasri by GW30.

    Did i pass?

      Unless I mis-read, but no plan to get Cesc back in? Bold move. I'd go for Berba->RVP for the GW29 trade by the way. Does Arsenal's draw yesterday affect any EPL games? Because it might result in Arsenal getting another DGW at the expense of a week.

              nasri has missed 4 of the last 5, coincidence? Nasri when in the squad is just as effective as fabs when it comes to points scored per game. I love fabs too, but hes just too damn expensive in a season where cheaper options are just as consistent.

                I'm with you, fuzzo. I do love having Fab, but Nasri is the cheaper and potentially higher point scoring option. Plus this blank GW gives a good opportunity to remove Fab and get Nasri back in (wouldn't normally waste a transfer on a sideways move between team-mates).

      If helps I am also considering doing RVP and Fabs out for Cahill and Rooney. Then RVP back next GW. But then I will have bencing headache every week, so I hope for a GW 28 yellow for Adam 😉 . I think I might go with that plan but instead selling RVP selling Odemwingie even he has a game. In the future I will probably have to sell him for a hit surely cause he is waste of space.

      The ultimate dilemma nowadays is Fabregas vs Rooney. Nobody knows the real answer IMO.

    Is anyone to fussed about United coverage for this week?

    Wigan are playing well lately so that won't be easy and as bad as Chelsea are surely it won't be a points fest although i said that about the Manchester Derby and Nani messed me up.

    At the minute i have just Nani, if anything i'll bring in a defender or maybe Rooney.

      I've got Vidic and Nani. I'm unsure about Vidic, he won't get many points over the next 3 games (Wigan, Chelsea and Liverpool). Even if you did get Man Utd coverage, they've got a tough game next week as well as the Chelsea game. I don't think it's totally neccesary.

        This is what is putting me off, Berba is value option but these are not games i fancy him to be scoring in.

          I think your last 10 or so words answers your question. It's not worth it and there's better value out there (Bent, even Sturridge if you want)

            I have to have Rooney. 2 games it means at least 4 points. And I will have 10 players instead so its no brainier bringing him in.

              Rooney is a much stronger case than Berba, it would just mean losing Tevez which i don't itend to be doing again.

      im all in on united for the double. Im not sure the investment will pay off but here's my thinking. We have all geared our squads to DGWers over the past several weeks. Some have payed off, some havent. Some people have two or 3 brum players, in some cases multiple blackpool, stoke etc. Some thought brunt was a great play with 2 easy home fixtures, some thought a guy like simpson should be benched with 2 road fixtures vs an option like kelly. (this would be me) Point being, you never know, but what is a certainty is thats its 2 games, twice as much time to do damage, and united are top of the table, a team more reliable to expect fantasy returns than most of the league. So why not take a risk if youre willing to have multiple players from a much less successful team. I apologize fo rnot stating this better, Im still a lil crocked.

    Why am I considering putting a $10 flutter on FC Copenhagen to beat Chelsea at $6.25? I must be losing my mind.

    Actually, it might work out...

      Nahhhh FC are pretty much defensive. Less then 2.5 goals is the real bet IMO. IT could be draw at the most. I can't see it FC wining.
