Chelsea’s poor form continues as they crash out the FA Cup in round four, leaving Europe as their only real crack at silverware this season. Birmingham keep up their great cup form, Stoke blow away Brighton and an unimpressive Man United XI see off a Crawley side that will no doubt be patronised as “plucky” in many of this morning’s broadsheets.

Carlo Ancelotti dropped Nicolas Anelka and Michael Essien to the bench for Chelsea’s fourth-round replay at home to Everton and, with both January big-money signings ineligible, Didier Drogba returned to the starting line-up, in a game that also saw Yury Zhirkov return from a calf injury sustained back in November. Chelsea continued their recent goal-shy ways, however, failing to score within the 90 minutes for the third game in succession. Frank Lampard’s goal at the end of the first period of extra-time looked like clinching victory, but a fantastic Leighton Baines free-kick with one minute of the match left took the game to penalties. Misses from Anelka and Ashley Cole allowed Phil Neville to step forward and knock the holders out the cup.

As Andy has previously mentioned, this Chelsea loss has a significant knock-on effect in terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL). With Ancelotti’s side now out of the FA Cup, this upcoming gameweek 28 will see Man United playing twice; first away to Wigan on Saturday afternoon before travelling to Stamford Bridge three days later for the showdown with the champions. This game will be Chelsea’s next domestic match and Ancelotti will surely have his title-holders fired-up for such an occasion. A Scouting the Doubles piece on this is imminent.

Following Everton’s limp display at Bolton last gameweek, David Moyes made three changes to his starting XI for the Stamford Bridge showdown, with Phil Jagielka, Leon Osman and Jermaine Beckford earning recalls. With only one clean sheet in their last sixteen league games, Everton haven’t exactly been offering much in defensive Fantasy Returns, but this gutsy showing will hearten those who are considering any Toffees defenders for their kind upcoming run of league fixtures. Moyes’ team will no doubt be buoyed by this victory and Everton -sitting just three points off the drop zone- will now need to push on and bring this form to the league.

With next week’s Carling Cup Final undoubtedly in mind, Alex McLeish made eight changes from last midweek’s league match with Newcastle for Birmingham’s home tie against Sheffield Wednesday. Ben Foster, Craig Gardner, David Bentley and Nikola Zigic were all benched, with Cameron Jerome partnering Obafemi Martins up front for the first time. After Jean Beausejour grabbed the game’s opener, Martins found the net for the first time in a Birmingham shirt and left-back David Murphy grabbed the third.

Alexander Hleb looks like facing Cup Final heartbreak against his former club, though. Having supplied the assist for Birmingham’s first two goals, he was then stretchered from the field with a knee injury before the half hour mark and replaced by Bentley. McLeish has indicated the midfielder will have a scan in the next 24 hours, with the club currently unsure of the severity.

Matthew Etherington passed a late fitness test on his back to take a place in the Stoke starting line-up for the home match with Brighton, but lasted just 38 minutes before being replaced. Tony Pulis rested Dean Whitehead and played John Carew up front with Jonathan Walters, meaning both Ricardo Fuller and Kenwyne Jones sat on the bench. The front pair rewarded their manager’s faith with a goal apiece, with Walters also grabbing an assist for Ryan Shawcross’ third.

Man United’s starting XI at home to Crawley bore little resemblance to their usual line-up, with only Rafael a regular starter, in a team that also included the likes of Michael Carrick, Anderson and Javier Hernandez. Anderson, struggling with a knock from early on, was replaced at the end of the first 45 minutes by Wayne Rooney, whose only contribution was collecting a yellow card late on. Sir Alex Ferguson must be hugely disappointed by the performances of his fringe players, with not one of them managing to impress in a thoroughly uneventful Old Trafford match.

    My current team for GW28:

    Begovic (Foster)
    Huth | Coleman | Simpson | Rafael | Carr
    Cahill | Nani | Young
    Odemwingie | Tevez
    Sub: RVP | Fabregas | Walcott

    As you can see I only have 10 players playing, so the question is, is it worth it bringing in O'Shea or Smalling in for Carr or Giggs or Fletcher for Walcott for this GW?

      i brought rooney in for RVP. had two free transfers and will bring RVP right back in next GW (assuming health). At this stage of the season, I can afford to lose the .3 on RVP, which may drop to .2 if enough get rid during his blank. Maybe im nuts but thats my gameplan.

        Yeah I'm just not sure that two away games against Wigan and Chelsea warrants me investing in a third ManU player even if I otherwise would field only 10 players.

      Ok, found it. skysports.com saying he should be ok for Arsenal. Was kind of hoping he'd be out for GW28 so Nani and Cahill in for a 4pt hit would be a no-brainer.

    Anyone else not really paying attention to the United double? They're both away games and one is against Chelsea. I've got Nani and I think that's enough. I can't see them keeping two clean sheets and scoring too many goals. Just my thoughts.

      im paying attention. There seems to be as much interest in investing in brum players, everton players. Before GW27, all kinds of players from stoke/wolves/spurs. I hada DGWer with 2 away games, didnt look attractive. Lad goes by the name Danny Simpson. On my friggin bench with 12 points. So am I going to max out on united, while others disregard or struggle to field 11. They are top of the table, at wigan doesnt exactly scare me, I expect more returns than a home match against half the teams in the league. And Chelsea are poor right now.

    Anyone else a little concerned about no Utd coverage for DGW?

    I could field 11 but have the option of:

    Fab > Nani, or
    RVP > Rooney.

    It would be short term - some value loss issues but I'm not too worried.

    Either of them good moves?

    No 42 in the world shot this down on the last report - anyone else think the below IS worth a 4 point hit given I can only field 11 at present?

    Stockdale & Fabs -> VDS & Cahill

    It will give me the potential to field 11 with an extra doubler (VDS) in GW28 and also an extra doubler(Cahill) in GW29. Trying to avoid hits, but this one actually seems a pretty worthwhile one on the face of it? Thoughts?

        Need to save 1.9m after doing stockdale -> VDS...any suggestions for the other transfer? Would make sense to get rid of one of VDV, Fabs or RVP so that I can field 11. Would lose value on VDV and RVP so Fabs seems the easiest to let go - would leave me with 10m for a mid if so....if not Cahill, who??

      Todays game should give some insight into Wengers team selection for Wednesday.

      Personally, with an opportunity to win the title this year, i dont see Wenger resting key players VS stoke.

      Arshavin seems the most likely to get minutes out of that lot but he may have to settle for a starting place on the bench.

    So is this United double changing anyone's view on taking a hit to field 11 players? I'm now thinking that playing 10 with two doublers is like playing a team of 12, so might just not take the hit.

      Who are your two? I have Rafael & Nani. The first won't play both matches and nani doesn't tend to return big points on the road. Am thinking about a -4. Would hate to end up playinr 5-3-2 with my average defence & Howard.

        Thinking Nani and Berbatov. I agree that I'm not expecting much from either, but if you take a 4 point hit to field 11 then that player has to get at least 4 to make it worthwhile. So I'm thinking about just taking a few extra United points and be happy.

      Djourou -> Walker
      Odemwingie -> Rooney

      It will only cost 4 points and I think it could prove to be worth it. I cant quite afford to do just the Fabregas and Odem transfers 🙁

      Thats what im doing mate anyway - ill have 11 players and 2 doubles (Rooney c) if it helps you.

        Annoying when you can't quite do what you want for the sake of a few .1s! How about Berbatov instead of Rooney, then save the hit? Although obviously then you're only playing 10 (with two doublers).

            Ah, that is a good point actually, I forgot about SAF liking to play 4-5-1 against the big teams, especially away. Thanks for the reminder. Although, remember he has played Berb as that lone striker before, with Rooney providing from the wing, but unlikely at the moment.

      Yes I'm thinking about it.

      I actually think they're two decent games for Utd. They should beat Wigan comfortably and, right now, Chealsea really are no match for Utd.

      If Rafael was definitely nailed on I'd get him in but I definitely will get Rooney.

      I may do Rooney to RVP (only lose 0.2 on it) instead of Rooney for Odem, which would give me 11 for G28. But I'd have to get RVP back the following week.

      Also think Baines, Coleman, Saha and Fellaini are the best Everton players to get for the double. Not sure Cahill worth it. I'd rather spend the money getting VdV back for GW29.

    Stockdale to Vds to field 11, 14 with doublers. Seems very meh but could work out

    Not that tempted by Rooney or Berbatov given the Chelsea away game after and I need a keeper. Bir and United seem to rotate pretty well and VDS should play remainder of season as its his last so is prob the cheapest way into United defence currently.

        Yes rotates very well. But its the same price as my current 3
        Foster, Stockdale, Vidic goes to Fos, VDS, Baines and money.

        May actually just keep Odem and bench him for a while.

            Il prob downgrade Baines after aswell which gives even more money.

                Yes but United have some excellent fixtures coming up and Vidic evra are expensive.

                This saves money and Robinson under Kean at Blackburn are not as tight at the back and United will keep more than Stoke.

            we like the little russian gargamel but he doesn't work backwards enough (partly due to fitness) and has zero defensive qualities. if we play arshavin walcott and van persie in the same team, fabregas can't get forward enough because he has to cover + clichy is left exposed, that's why i prefer nasri on the left wing.

              Yeah fair enough. But he's so much better than Walcott, I think it's Walcott who should be replace by Nasri and not Arshavin. Walcott has got so much undeserved hype lately imo, his performance against Barcelona is up there with the worst I've seen lately.

              Agreed that it's a worry that he's crap defensively, as Clichy isn't the player he used to be either. Hmm.

            Don't get me wrong, i think he's alright. But I would rather play Nasri and Walcott in the wide spots. He's very frustrating, a bit like Bendtner - gets in loads of decent postions but has a dire conversion rate. If we got offered in the region of 15m i think we should snap that up and replace him.

        3-1 West Brom. Odemwingwe brace. As long as Duisburg women stays 2-0 in the next 10 mins then, if either west brom or arsenal win 3-1 ive got at least 20 quid back from 2.if both win 3-1 410 quid. but meh it wont happen prob.
