With Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Stoke at the Emirates last Wednesday closing the gap at the top of the Premier League to a single point, Man United will be looking to re-establish their lead at the summit by taking advantage of their game in hand over Arsene Wenger’s side this upcoming gameweek.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side first travel to Wigan on Saturday, but a visit to Stamford Bridge next Tuesday evening- where Chelsea will surely be fighting tooth and nail to battle back into the title race themselves- suggests this will be anything but a straightforward double gameweek. Two wins, however, would take United seven points clear at the top and is motive enough for last season’s runners-up in a week that should see plenty Fantasy Investment for the Old Trafford side‘s players, particularly with Arsenal, Tottenham and Birmingham all without league matches this week.

The Prospects

United have not exactly shone on their travels this term; they’ve managed a mere three wins from twelve away games and chalked up just one clean sheet in their last six on the road, with injuries to the likes of Rio Ferdinand leaving them under-strength at the back. Fergie’s side will be looking to recover from their last away game, the unexpected 2-1 defeat at Molinuex that brought their unbeaten league record to an end.

Wigan are undefeated in three league games but are as poor defensively at the DW Stadium as they are away from home; Roberto Martinez’s side have kept just two clean sheets at home all season, with the last one coming in gameweek 13. With the games coming thick and fast (United are also away to Liverpool next weekend) this match will surely see the “weaker” of Fergie’s team selections this gameweek.

Chelsea’s last domestic game saw Everton end their two-year reign as FA Cup holders and, with the champions currently twelve points behind United, Carlo Ancelotti will be desperate to regain some pride in what has become a disappointing defence of the league title. Chelsea will be cheered by their winning Champions League performance this midweek in Copenhagen and, with Fernando Torres on board to face nemesis Nemanja Vidic, will be desperate to prevent United potentially going eighteen points ahead, a scenario that could unfold if the visitors arrive with a win at Wigan already under their belt.

The Likely Lads

It’s practically impossible to second-guess Sir Alex Ferguson at the best of times but with this gameweek coming on the back of a tough Champions League match at Marseille, predicting who will start both games is pretty much a shot in the dark. You would expect at least six, with a fair degree of certainty: Nani, Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Edwin Van der Saar and Darren Fletcher, with the first three clearly the most likely for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) returns.

With Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans today both confirmed as injured until next weekend, Chris Smalling (a subsequent Scout Pick choice of Mark’s for this gameweek) also looks a near-certainty to play both matches, unless Wes Brown gets a game.

Fergie’s recent decision to bench Dimitar Berbatov for the home match with Man City now casts doubt on the Bulgarian’s chances of starting the Chelsea match, in particular, despite his goalscoring exploits this season. Berbatov will surely start at Wigan, though, and as Robin Van Persie showed last gameweek, it sometimes only needs one game for an in-form forward to outscore team mates who go on to play both match.

Cheeky Punt

Having missed the recent European tie, Ryan Giggs could well be fit for the Wigan match tomorrow. The Welshman has been an integral part of the United first-team since just before New Year (he’s started eight of their last ten league games) and has picked up 1 goal, 3 assists and 2 Bonus Points in his last five. Our Members can see for themselves how similar he’s been to Nani in “Distribution and Influence” since the turn of the year, from gameweek 21, though he’s not been quite so prolific in front of goal.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    foster/gordon
    djourou/kelly/toure/coleman/rafael
    fabregas/adam/nani/brunt/pedersen
    tevez/campbell/rvp

was gonna do this to make it better.
    howard in for gordon
barton and a young in for brunt and pedersen for a 4 point hit.

not really sure what to do about adam, got a lot of money stored in him. was wondering what people thought.

Better to go keeper-less this week. Nothing to say Gordon won't end up being Ok to play tomorrow.

Brunt and Pederson both play this weekend so not sure taking them out is a wise move.Adam to Barton and save your 2nd free for next week so can get Cahill and Baines for no hit.

RE earlier: I'm going without 3 all rounders for the next five or six games... Risky business.

Captaining Charles Coventry against Canada is destined to earn me about -16 points. I like the cut of his jib though, especially the specs, and I'm hoping for a bit more of this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/aug/16/charles-coventry-192-zimbabwe-bangladesh

    My team is

    Begovic
    Kelly, Coleman, Kolarov, Huth
    Nani, Fabregas, Walcott, Adam
    Tevez, Odem

Bench – Foster, Carr, VDV, RVP

I want to get rid of my Arsenal lads and make use of the double gameweek.

    Hence,

    1. Fabregas > Merieles
    2. Walcott > Young (not sure about this one…would have bought Tim Cahill but he is a non starter)
    3. Odeam > Berba
    4. Kelly > Smalling (Carr is kept for their doubler next week)

I am tempted to do 1, 3, 4. What do you think lads???

For week 29, Tim Cahill (DGW) and Nasri will come in Merieles + Walcott/Young

Looking forward to your help lads and lasses…

I can see the logic in the moves but maybe odem to berba isnt worth it, if your trying to get 11 playing its probs not worth shifting out someone whos likely to start, berbatov could even be on the bench against chelsea.

Im deciding between young and cahill too!

      How about.

      Odem to Tevez

      Kelly to Kolarov.

Givet isn't injured so, as half his Blackburn defence is crocked he'll be playing. Plus their fixtures are decent for the run in. LIverpool are facing a tricky run and you'll probably be benching Kelly a lot anyway n the next few weeks.

You prob wont lose anything replacing him with Kolarov.

He's definitely better prospect and in better form than a lot of other popular names around here.

I think Barton is a good move this week because he's a guy you can play for the next few weeks. Will you want to play Silva in a few weeks time when the likes of Walcott and VdV are fit?

We sometimes need to think beyond just this one gameweek and look at what we want our teams to look like 3 or 4 games down the line.

The people madly scurrying around now having to make 3 or 3 changes this week just to field a near full team probably paid more attention to cramming in juicy double gameweekers than to what would happen after the doubles party was over.

A four point hit will give me this:

    Begovic (Foster)
    Vidic, Kolarov, Coleman, Kelly, Walker
    Nani, Young, Barton (VdV, Bentley)
    Tevez, Odemwingie (Van Persie)
    Bank: 4.0m

Fabs, Adam and Djourou would go. I would probably want Djourou back quickly and Adam after his suspension but I will also want to upgrade Bentley to Nasri and Odem to something better.

    Any thoughts, guys?

Thanks. I had planned for this GW but the yellow for Adam plus injuries have screwed things up a little.

I had considered Cahill and Arteta but I figure Coleman is enough Everton coverage for the moment given the form of those two and the doubt on the GW.

I'm not overly sold on Young either but I'm going to get him for this nice run of Villa matches and see how it goes.

Why sell Djourou when he's perfectly playable next week and you have 4 good defenders this week?

You can only play 1 of your current Mids (Nani). Barton and Young with your 2 freebies and RVP to Rooney or Berbs.

You'd have 3 utd players so thats 6 games between them.

Not keen on Berbs and Rooney long term to be honest. I want Kolarov in and the plan would be to bring Djourou straight back for Kelly. Hopefully the rest of the team would be OK for a week or two.

Sorry for the re-post....my team is:

    Al-Habsi (Foster)
    Murphy Kelly Coleman Ferdinand (Djourou)
Adam Fabregas Nani Yaya Toure (VdV)
    Odemwingie Tevez (RvP)

As you can see after a good few weeks my team is in ruins!

Have two free transfers so definately thinking:

    1) Adam to Barton

    2) Murphy to Kolorov

For a 4 point hit was thinking about:

    3) Fabregas to Young/Cahill (Who? Worried Cahill might not start)

Does anyone think its worth an 8 point hit and also do:

    4) Ferdinand to Vidic

Even with a 8 point hit I may only still have 10 players playing but worried getting in Vidic might not be fully be worth losing 4 more points!

    Need some advise please!!

Not keen on an 8 point hit myself but these are exceptional circumstances. Look at it this way:

      Ferdinand scores 0
Vidic scores more than 0. The question is how much more as you are effectively paying 4 points for him. Can you see him scoring more than four over the two matches?

They were class! All that early 90's Manchester stuff was great. Oasis did get pretty crap after a bit though, I blame Liam - he always seemed a right twonk. Saw them live at a massive festival in Ireland a few years ago and they were pretty disappointing. Ian Brown was playing as well but he was off his face.

As it stands I have 9 playing (if Kelly plays) and I'm going to shift Walcott & Fabs; which two would you pick out of Meireles, Cahill, Arteta and Silva? (I have Young)

And also would you bump it up to an 8 point hit to switch Kelly for one of Baines (I do have Coleman), Smalling or Vidic? Obviously United have a double but I like the look of Everton's next 5/6 games.

Arteta is on 1.7 per week on form and has appeared to be playing defensive midfield all season.

Cahill hasn't looked the same player since the Asian Cup and is possibly injured

Meireles has never before had a season like this. Can he go on?

Silva could be worthwhile but is a bit of a punt.

Wouldn't do an 8 point hit removing a player who may be fit and can play.

      I am tempted to do

      1. Fabregas > Merieles
      2. Walcott > Young (not sure about this one…would have bought Tim Cahill but he is a non starter)
      3. Odeam > Berba
      4. Kelly > Smalling (Carr is kept for their doubler next week)

I think the bandwagons over the next few weeks will be

        Tim Cahill
Nasri (While fabs and theo get better)
        Caroll...

I've hit Fabs > Silva confirmed now so that's my free transfer gone. Probably wise advice on the Arteta/Cahill front Murmuring, cheers. Now torn whether to just go Walcott > Meireles or whether to try and wedge Baines in too, I may leave Baines for next week. Anyone you'd recommend instead of Meireles? Not 100% on him (although I've said that the last few weeks and he won't stop scoring!)

I'm looking at the cheap end personally. Newcastle have three home fixtures in the next four and have some nice midfield options.

I'm assuming if 4 players don't play in your starting 11, then if all 4 on the bench do, they'll all come on?

It'll trust me to be trying to be clever if there's a max of 3!

also no need to really do that. Although it is funny to wind up rivals, its harder to gauge where your current weekly rank is. Especially when you will need to wait to after Chelski v Utd to see where you finish.

Not really. You can't gage anyway, as different people get lucky with their subs on different weeks. I've done it before, and it's always nice to know you have points to come off the bench.

Admittedly, if I wasn't a decent amount in front I probably wouldn't, for peace of mind, if nothing else.

Basically one of my rivals (who's a mate of mine) always gets excited before people come off the bench. Knowing 4 of mine don't have a game, I've started them for the points to come in right at the end.

It'll be worth it when he's checking the scores on his iPhone in the pub.

Then bring in Young for Fabregas
and then either meireles or Cahill( if you want a risk) for Adam.

Don't see City burying Fulham - perhaps 1-0. Silva offers plenty of assist value, but not convinced on him as a purchase myself. Not too many 'reasonable' midfield options out there at the moment for this gw...

      Walcott > Young or Downing.

      Adam > Nolan or Barton.

I've got Nolan and will probably bring in Downing.
