Mark Hughes withdrew a reluctant handshake and inflicted a potentially fatal blow to Roberto Mancini’s hopes of a top four finish as Fulham held City at Eastlands. If the visitors’ stubborn display, with attacking menaces surprised nobody – City’s inability to blow down defences, even with three £20 million strikers on the pitch, continues to baffle.

Carlos Tevez earned an assist – paltry returns from what would have been billed as a potentially profitable afternoon for his owners. Investors in King Kenny’s revival came off even worse – a tepid showing at Upton Park saw Liverpool rolled over with apparent ease. Scott Parker again led the way for West Ham, despite being patched up for a shoulder injury hours before kick-off.

With the Carling Cup Final covered off in Sunday’s Knee Jerk and it’s Robin Van Persie follow-up, here’s the notes on yesterday’s Premier League encounters.

Roberto Mancini was without two key players in Vincent Kompany and David Silva. The latter’s omission came as a surprise to Fantasy Managers, with the Spaniard featuring as a Watchlist candidate earlier the week. Silva missed yesterday’s game with an ankle knock sustained in Thursday’s Europa League tie with Aris Salonika. He was subbed with 10 minutes remaining of that game but, at the time, there was no mention of an injury. Mancini stated after the Fulham result that he hoped to have both Kompany and Silva back for their FA Cup fifth round tie with Villa on Wednesday.

“David injured his ankle against Aris and Vincent hadn’t recovered from his hip injury, but I hope one or both will be back for Wednesday.”

Those two casualties added to Mancini’s list that already contained Adam Johnson, Micah Richards and Nigel De Jong, as even City’s resources become stretched – much to the frustration of the City boss…

“If I could freshen up the side by resting three or four players, I would, but because we have so many injuries, it’s impossible.”

Mancini again went with three strikers against Fulham, with Carlos Tevez partnered by Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli in attack. The latter opened the scoring with a fine strike from distance – his ninth goal in City colours. The Italian international came under a barrage of criticism from his manager however, having frustrated the home fans with several wasted efforts and failing to display the movement and workrate expected of him.

“No, I am not happy with him…He scored a good goal but I am not happy. He should play well, better than today…For strikers it is important to score. But strikers should also play for the team. You cannot always play well. But the attitude is always important. If you don’t have a good attitude, it is difficult to play with three strikers.”

Balotelli’s place against Villa is far from assured then and a shift back to 4-4-2 for forthcoming matches seems likely. Yesterday’s 4-3-3 saw Pablo Zabaleta in a holding midfield role, with Aleksandar Kolarov shifted to left-back. The Serb again showed attacking intent throughout but was also a frustration having fired in a first-half shot from an impossible angle when team-mates were better positioned. Kolarov was also run ragged by a lively Damien Duff and was eventually subbed on 77 minutes; he is still far from assured of his starting role for gameweek 29’s home clash with Wigan.

Fulham’s performance was again encouraging. Mark Hughes was forced into one change to his lineup – Dickson Etuhu returned to central midfield for the injured Steve Sidwell. Hughes’ side have lost just one of their last eight league games and have conceded just 5 goals in that spell. Again, they were well organised defensively against City, whilst in attack Duff in particular enjoyed a fine game – terrorising Kolarov and converting Andy Johnson’s cross for the equaliser.

The Cottagers have strong fixtures to come and certainly present an option for the Fantasy Manager seeking a differential. It’s Blackburn at home next, with an Everton trip followed by another winnable home encounter with Blackpool. The likes of Duff, Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey look decent options in attacking terms, while Chris Baird and Brede Hangeland present considerations at the back.

West Ham’s 3-1 victory at Upton Park lifted them from the bottom and inflicted a defeat in 8 matches for Dalglish’s side. Scott Parker was once again the inspiration for the Hammers – he notched a delicate curling strike for his fifth goal of the league campaign and duly earned another 3 Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points. Parker has scored 8 Bonus in his last 4 matches.

Demba Ba continued to show superb form – planting a fine header into the corner of Pepe Reina’s net from a Gary O’Neil centre for West Ham’s second. Ba has struck 3 goals in 2 league starts and earned FPL Bonus in both those games.

While we’ve picked out the Hammers in “Frisking the Fixtures” in recent weeks, the potential of West Ham’s players is somewhat tempered by a run of fixtures that now stiffens considerably. Avram Grant’s side do not have an easy run-in and, in the short term, visits to Spurs and Bolton, with Stoke and United at Upton Park next – looks a testing schedule.

Liverpool’s showing was bitterly disappointing. Steven Gerrard’s return and a second league start for Luis Suarez up front failed to ignite Liverpool as an attacking force, although the Uruguayan did notch a smart assist for Glen Johnson second-half goal.

Defensively, Liverpool also looked strangely frail, despite Dalglish deploying a 5-3-2 system with young Danny Wilson holding his starting role as one of three centre –backs. Martin Kelly’s hamstring injury which saw him replaced just before half-time could cut off the obvious route to Liverpool’s defensive returns for the coming weeks and, looking at their schedule of games (MUN sun wba MCY ars), his colleagues at the back are in for some severe tests. The prospect for Liverpool clean sheets looks bleak.

Raul Meireles also suffered an injury was replaced just after half-time. He has been the shining light within the Liverpool squad in terms of attacking points, but his earning potential must also be questioned in the light of the injury and Liverpool’s forthcoming opponents.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Unfortunatly not. Everton in the cup Tuesday so see how he gets on then.

Remember that Everton double doesn't go ahead if Reading force a replay, so steer clear of early transfers if funds/rises allow.

    Early thoughts:
I think I can deal with Rafael being out of favour and just bench him so I have to do something with my attack.

    Doubtful-> Barton,Silva,RVP,VdV
    Rotation risk -> Berbatov

I don't believe that RVP's injury is that serious, but he may sit out against SUN. I reckon it's a bruise, so I might keep him.
VDV should hopefully be back, Barton can easily sit on my bench -> that leaves me with either

    A.Berbatov>Saha
    B.Berbatov>Zigic
    or
    C.Berbatov, Silva/Barton > Zigic, Cahill (-4p)

    What do you think?

    Hi!

    My team for gw29

    Foster
    Johnson, Djorue, Coleman, Kolarov
    Nani, Silva, Ferguson, Vdv
    Tevez, Rooney

Last week point hits went for Silva, so no more for me!
Silva => Cahill (if confirmed fit)
    or
Rooney => Saha/Torres (if Roo gets banned)

Cahill has double in gw29 and then home games in gw 30 + 31.
Don't want to take too many hits, so he could be more of a long term solution (what ever that is in fantasy football world..).

If Vdv is still out, then prob will do vdv to cahill and keep silva.

    3 ppg at home
    1.9 ppg away.

He's not scored or assisted away from home at all yet.
Both of Everton's games in their DGW (should it ago ahead) are away.

Last pass is all that counts. A keeper could roll it out to someone who then takes the entire team on to score and it'll still be an assist. Bit stupid at times I admit, but thems the rules.

With Coleman/Foster and Carr, I would only have 3 of a potential 6 DGW players this week, but with injury clouds hanging over Cahill and Saha, I am not tempted by anyone else, bar maybe Baines, but I am happy with my defence.

Birmingham will be on cloud nine, but I am happy with 2, therefore I am thinking Malouda IN for Chelsea's good run of games, think again this DGW fever has set in and everyone will be scrambling on to the likes of Cahill even where they know he may only play one game, and if that is the case, Chelsea have Blackpool.

I know Chelsea are not a form side, but because of this, I feel there is now a sense of "it's only Chelsea", and they are certainly wounded and waiting to bite back. Tomorrow night could be decisive in deciding whether i go for Cahill or Malouda, but, I as I said, I am happy with 3 DGW's, for now!

I'm really thinking about getting Torres in if RVP is going to be out for a few weeks. But I know I'll be stuck with him until the end of season more than likely, as he COULD score against anyone and I'd hate to take him out. Ah well, wait for RVP news first.

Malouda is a stupid idea actually, call it Monday morning madness, would love Torres though.

Hmm, not sold on Mickey A, but if he shows any signs of regaining the form of 2 seasons ago, he would be a good purchase.

I don't think there will be a ban. It may take an appeal, but it won't happen. It's not the worst incident of its kind, and McCarthy had intent in blocking him off and trying to elbow Rooney himself.

Wow! they must have photoshopped McCarthy's violence out of the match I saw. I just saw Rooney elbow him in the head off the ball. You just can't trust anything you see any more can you?

If they follow it up, you create a counter-climate that allows off the ball blocking incidents. Just because you can't see it, or understand how McCarthy is infringing you're basically applauding the fact that he can commit a foul and get away with it - and a ban for Rooney will only encourage this type of play. Also, by the same logic, you wouldn't have minded if Rooney had retaliated/protected himself in a more cycnical/disguised manner.

7 times this season I have taken points hits, 6 times I have gotten red arrows, except for this week having taken 8, I am on 62 with 5 to play, and funnily enough, like most others, my 2 4 pointers didn't even play, Giggs and Barton, albeit that Giggs will hopefully start tomorrow night.

The hits don't work, they just make it worse, but I know I'll see green arrows again.

sometimes hits do pay off even though they look like they haven't.

for example, they may pay off over 3 weeks if not necessarily in the 1st week

and although you may have a red arrow, you might score say 65 with a 4 point hit and get a red arrow, whereas without the hit you might have only got 58 (and still would have got a red arrow), but you are still up 3 points

Yep, when I take point hits its generally with 3-4 GWs in mind, not just the immediate GW.

that is true, more often than not you will pay for it the week you take them, but if it is a medium term move it will pay off, just nice when it pays off the week you do it, albeit that it has nothing to do with the actual guys you brought in, although they did allow me to fund Odem to Rooney and Rooney was (C), so, there you go!

      Odem > Zigic seems popular.
Kelly > Walker or another cheapie perhaps but depends what your priorities are.

I think my 3 defenders should be ok this week (Coleman, Kolarov, Djourou) so will probably ditch Wingie for someone given his tough run of fixtures. Probably Zigic although Saha is tempting given Everton's recent turnaround in form....which do you think is better? Saha/Zigic?

Hmmmm, Wingie to Beckford/Zigic, thats all I'd do, would give you 4 DGW players with no hits

It's between Wingie -> Zigic or Saha i think. Maybe Zigic as I already have 2 Everton players (Coleman/Cahill). Who to bench tho? Berbatov?!

Sit it out and save a transfer. You could consider transferring Kelly out but you'd probably bench his replacement anyway.

Even with the double GW? I think it makes sense to bring in a double GW player with my free?

I would just like to announce the most stupid, boneheaded, impatient double transfer I have made this year as (without knowing about Rooney the twit mindlessly elbowing a player (and somehow being able to finish the 90 minutes)) I have swapped Fabs and RVP out for Nasri and Rooney. 4 point friggin' hit to bring in that Rag b*stard. I’m dipping again. He will most assuredly be banned 3 matches for that. FML

Got a feeling Brum will let us down in the DGW, 2 loses in my opnion. Think they might take their eye off the ball and try to coast to the end of the season. I'll stick with Foster & Johnson I think.

Torres is a risk. I'd only do it if you're playing catch up.

I am slowly catching first place. Is Blackpool away such a risk? Hes been getting into good positions but not finishing, he will at some point.
