Mark Hughes withdrew a reluctant handshake and inflicted a potentially fatal blow to Roberto Mancini’s hopes of a top four finish as Fulham held City at Eastlands. If the visitors’ stubborn display, with attacking menaces surprised nobody – City’s inability to blow down defences, even with three £20 million strikers on the pitch, continues to baffle.

Carlos Tevez earned an assist – paltry returns from what would have been billed as a potentially profitable afternoon for his owners. Investors in King Kenny’s revival came off even worse – a tepid showing at Upton Park saw Liverpool rolled over with apparent ease. Scott Parker again led the way for West Ham, despite being patched up for a shoulder injury hours before kick-off.

With the Carling Cup Final covered off in Sunday’s Knee Jerk and it’s Robin Van Persie follow-up, here’s the notes on yesterday’s Premier League encounters.

Roberto Mancini was without two key players in Vincent Kompany and David Silva. The latter’s omission came as a surprise to Fantasy Managers, with the Spaniard featuring as a Watchlist candidate earlier the week. Silva missed yesterday’s game with an ankle knock sustained in Thursday’s Europa League tie with Aris Salonika. He was subbed with 10 minutes remaining of that game but, at the time, there was no mention of an injury. Mancini stated after the Fulham result that he hoped to have both Kompany and Silva back for their FA Cup fifth round tie with Villa on Wednesday.

“David injured his ankle against Aris and Vincent hadn’t recovered from his hip injury, but I hope one or both will be back for Wednesday.”

Those two casualties added to Mancini’s list that already contained Adam Johnson, Micah Richards and Nigel De Jong, as even City’s resources become stretched – much to the frustration of the City boss…

“If I could freshen up the side by resting three or four players, I would, but because we have so many injuries, it’s impossible.”

Mancini again went with three strikers against Fulham, with Carlos Tevez partnered by Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli in attack. The latter opened the scoring with a fine strike from distance – his ninth goal in City colours. The Italian international came under a barrage of criticism from his manager however, having frustrated the home fans with several wasted efforts and failing to display the movement and workrate expected of him.

“No, I am not happy with him…He scored a good goal but I am not happy. He should play well, better than today…For strikers it is important to score. But strikers should also play for the team. You cannot always play well. But the attitude is always important. If you don’t have a good attitude, it is difficult to play with three strikers.”

Balotelli’s place against Villa is far from assured then and a shift back to 4-4-2 for forthcoming matches seems likely. Yesterday’s 4-3-3 saw Pablo Zabaleta in a holding midfield role, with Aleksandar Kolarov shifted to left-back. The Serb again showed attacking intent throughout but was also a frustration having fired in a first-half shot from an impossible angle when team-mates were better positioned. Kolarov was also run ragged by a lively Damien Duff and was eventually subbed on 77 minutes; he is still far from assured of his starting role for gameweek 29’s home clash with Wigan.

Fulham’s performance was again encouraging. Mark Hughes was forced into one change to his lineup – Dickson Etuhu returned to central midfield for the injured Steve Sidwell. Hughes’ side have lost just one of their last eight league games and have conceded just 5 goals in that spell. Again, they were well organised defensively against City, whilst in attack Duff in particular enjoyed a fine game – terrorising Kolarov and converting Andy Johnson’s cross for the equaliser.

The Cottagers have strong fixtures to come and certainly present an option for the Fantasy Manager seeking a differential. It’s Blackburn at home next, with an Everton trip followed by another winnable home encounter with Blackpool. The likes of Duff, Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey look decent options in attacking terms, while Chris Baird and Brede Hangeland present considerations at the back.

West Ham’s 3-1 victory at Upton Park lifted them from the bottom and inflicted a defeat in 8 matches for Dalglish’s side. Scott Parker was once again the inspiration for the Hammers – he notched a delicate curling strike for his fifth goal of the league campaign and duly earned another 3 Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points. Parker has scored 8 Bonus in his last 4 matches.

Demba Ba continued to show superb form – planting a fine header into the corner of Pepe Reina’s net from a Gary O’Neil centre for West Ham’s second. Ba has struck 3 goals in 2 league starts and earned FPL Bonus in both those games.

While we’ve picked out the Hammers in “Frisking the Fixtures” in recent weeks, the potential of West Ham’s players is somewhat tempered by a run of fixtures that now stiffens considerably. Avram Grant’s side do not have an easy run-in and, in the short term, visits to Spurs and Bolton, with Stoke and United at Upton Park next – looks a testing schedule.

Liverpool’s showing was bitterly disappointing. Steven Gerrard’s return and a second league start for Luis Suarez up front failed to ignite Liverpool as an attacking force, although the Uruguayan did notch a smart assist for Glen Johnson second-half goal.

Defensively, Liverpool also looked strangely frail, despite Dalglish deploying a 5-3-2 system with young Danny Wilson holding his starting role as one of three centre –backs. Martin Kelly’s hamstring injury which saw him replaced just before half-time could cut off the obvious route to Liverpool’s defensive returns for the coming weeks and, looking at their schedule of games (MUN sun wba MCY ars), his colleagues at the back are in for some severe tests. The prospect for Liverpool clean sheets looks bleak.

Raul Meireles also suffered an injury was replaced just after half-time. He has been the shining light within the Liverpool squad in terms of attacking points, but his earning potential must also be questioned in the light of the injury and Liverpool’s forthcoming opponents.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm thinking of bringing Saha in but have three Everton already and would need dbl hit to do it.
Before you say this is mad,the reasoning is that Saha needs a couple of hatrick bonuses to buy a new car.

Insight: Dr Dre doesn't release any music for 5 years at a time, then re-emerges briefly to collaborate with Eminem on a track about him not releasing a record in ages.

Conclusion: Dre can only rap about not rapping in ages, and no-one knows who he is, so he has to rely on Eminem to get the track played. He will also allude strongly to his 1996 album, Aftermath.

I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment. When I hear Devlin for example, I get embarrassed on his behalf. If he ever does learn how to rap, he's going to look back on this part of his career and want the ground to swallow him up.

He's more like a godawful "street poet" with no flow.

Anyone who is actually into Hip Hop doesn't listen to what's in the charts and on the music channels, that's always been the case, you have to dig a bit deeper to find the good stuff. The general public can't handle anything with any content, they need over produced tunes with nursery rhymes to understand the lyrics.

The more I think about it the more it annoys me..

People who captained Rooney could have had -4 yet they end up with at least 22, possibly even 26 or more. And the people who held on to RVP may be getting a cruel twist from the weekend as well. Clattenberg must be fighting near the top of his mini-league.. 😉

I spent 8 points getting Rooney in, I like to think I got rewarded for the bottle to do that, yes, got a bit lucky that he didn't say read, but the same can be said for every bobble of the ball allowing a player to score, an unexpected mistake from a keeper, a fortuitois rebound from a post, etc etc, this game is so heavily reliant on luck, I can never understand why people try and argue that it is more about skill.

I went from 144,000th 5 weeks ago to 17,000th, and while yes I have made some good moves, I have just gotten lucky with my captaincy picks, and alot goes down to that.

Oh I know Johnny, huge amount of luck involved. Just annoyed at Clattenberg's incompetence - If he saw it why didn't he send him off or if he didn't why did he react to the crowd? Shot himself in the foot either way.

I didn't buy Rooney because he isn't playing well and United's away form has been ordinary at best with their performance at Wolves absolutely shocking. Couple that with an away trip to The Bridge where they haven't done well in recent seasons and a trip to Anfield the gameweek after, with RVP hopefully returning against Sunderland after beig declared fit for the Cup final, I thought I was justified.

Then again, I love fantasy football for the twists and turns it provides - The opportunity to give yourself a pat on the back or equally berate yourself for benchig the wrong player or captaining some muppet whilst a rival captain revels in it. Swings and roundabouts!

He has a few points of late yes but he is still out of form, even he himself has said that, so I decided against.

I was thinking of WCing in 32 to get stocked for the DGW and also to get on some teams with improved fixtures ie Sunderland but now I'm wondering where to do it next week as Spurs have a turn around in fixtures plus i might want Carroll if he's back and it's will be easier to get some big Chelsea players too.

    Myhill, Brunt, Rooney, 6 points

    vs

    Vidic

Fantasy Cup alive and kicking. Unless united keepa cleanie and Vidic gets attacking and bonus points and rooney doesnt play and brunt and myhill do nothing, should get through to next round.

Will be down to 1,024 managers. Is it ok to be excited about this? How far have you gone in this thing before?

I just need to merge all the information in 2 tables where two fields (one in each table) match.

And then, slightly more complex, if there is no match, it needs to do the same with another table.

So I think it's something like:
        select * from table_a
        merge * from table_b where table_b.index matches table_a.index

            select a.*, c.*

                oh, that's perfect!

I realised that I didn't have the right column, so I'm having to rebuild it now, but I'll give it a try.

                I had a go with:
                SELECT * FROM `table_a` WHERE 1
                JOIN index
                on table_a.index = table_b.index

But that's the simple version it was the . I was missing as well.

Swaying towards c) but have 3 issues:

      1) Already have 1 Everton defender
      2) Uses all free cash & will make doing Adam -> Nasri difficult

exactly. Though it is an elbow, the initial infringement is McCarthy's (if there is any doubt btw, when someone properly hits you with an elbow, you go down ...fast).

A ban only serves to make the more cynical and equally dangerous blocking-off-off-the-ball fouls more popular.

Once a fierce competitor, always a fierce competitor, don't like when this stuff happens between managers, but I also think that Mancini can be an arrogant son of a gun, and two wrongs don't make a right, so Mancini could have been the bigger man and looked him in the eye rather than getting his own back kind of thing.

Maybe I do look at the world in United tinted glasses!

So, no boners for Arteta at the weekend, am I to take it that he wasn't that good and got a lucky assist or what's the deal yo? I also so an article the other day about Moyes saying that even more set pieces would be taken off Mickey A where he felt that there was too much pressure on him, everything is pointing to Baines, but I have Coleman and am happy with the rest of my defence!

I thought he warranted Distin's 1bp to be fair, but no sign of him playing further forward as yet. In a number of Everton attacks (late on), I could see Beckford, Osman, Cahill, but no Arteta - I assume he'd started the move and was sitting deep.

I don't think we can expect the fantasy point returns of old with Arteta in his quarterback role. I want to believe we can, and have had him in my squad on two separate occasions this season, but in previous years he's played wide or supported Yakubu / Saha. More often than not, he's going to be assisting the assister when playing in a deep lying role.

Having said that, he got forward well for Beckford's second goal; neatly cutting it back and laying it on a plate for him. It might be worth a look at his Opta Stats for the Sunderland game compared to previous performances.

I'm on my lunch break and am now waffling in case you haven't guessed!

Having said all this mate, I'm coming round to thinking that there is a touch too much arrogance in the Arsenal dressing room - Fabregas, Bendtner, Song, Wilshere - a problem that I believe needs to be addressed if they are to progress ... I hope I'm wrong, though.

There was a moment yesterday, in the second half, when Nasri obviously couldn't care less about the team ethic, and just dribbled on and shot in his own sweet way, head lowered between his shoulders ... I think Arsenal lost at that moment.

Ha, that was a bit of a low blow wasn't it.

Having said that, Wilshere is a devilish little one as well, he has a touch of fabregas about him, didn't like it when he just looked at Bowyer's hand and refused to shake it.

Wilshere is an exceptional talent, but I can tell he will be a total bell-end, his face annoys me even, he will be, if he isn't already, a cocky little twerp.

That being said, he is right, very low blow, and completely uncalled for from Birmingham player.

last week, shot a kid on work experience with his air gun, how does that even happen in a professional training ground, I would of thought the presence of an air gun flies in the face of the health and safety concerns at a training ground.

Think I may take a gamble on Rooney -> Torres this week if Rooney gets banned.

Fixtures of blp MCY stk WIG wbaBIR WHM look pretty nice. If RVP is out then there aren't an awful lot of strikers I'd fancy instead of Rooney. Torres will come good.
