Aston Villa arrived at Eastlands with match winning talent on the bench, granting City’s star-studded lineup an easy passage to an FA Cup Quarter-Final. Down at the Emirates meanwhile, Leyton Orient are left dreaming of Vegas as Arsenal’s Nicklas Bentdner hits the jackpot with a hat-trick to cement his place in Van Persie’s non-pink boots and maybe even the minds of Fantasy Managers…

Inexplicably Gerard Houllier chose to make no less than eight changes to the lineup that destroyed Blackburn at the weekend. Significantly both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing were rested to the bench – good news for their Fantasy owners, but surely baffling for the Villa fans who made a hopeful trip to Eastlands.

Houlier handed a first start to new signing Michael Bradley in midfield. He lined up alongside Barry Bannan, with Fabian Delph also given a midfield role and Stiiyan Petrov recalled. Nathan Delfouneso started in attack, with Gabby Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey up with him. There was little to take from the Villa performance here – very few involved boosted their first team credentials and Houllier will surely recall the likes of Young, Downing and Albrighton for the trip to Bolton this weekend.

City, in contrast, fielded a strong starting XI, although it must be said that Roberto Mancini did take the opportunity to rest Carlos Tevez. He emerged from the bench on 60 minutes but it was Mario Balotelli who was handed the start up front in a 4-5-1. Micah Richards made a return from injury at the back, with Jerome Boateng and Joleon Lescott in central defensive roles and Pablo Zabaleta at left-back.

Aleksandar Kolarov was in the left midfield role once again then. As usual he fired in a few ambitious efforts on goal, but it was his corners that were the real feature of his game. His deadball delivery continues to offer City a threat and could yet bring him assists this season.

Yaya Toure was back in an attacking midfield role and offered a reminder as to his Fantasy potential, scoring the opening goal and then providing the assist for Balotelli’s strike and City’s second.

David Silva sparkled throughout and his 20-yard effort for the third goal announced his return to the City lineup after missing the 1-1 with Fulham with an ankle knock. He will surely lineup against Wigan at the weekend and offer a decent midfield prospect as a result.

Baltotelli has now scored 10 goals in 18 appearances for City, gathering 9 bookings in the process. He also added to that tally last night, picking up a yellow from Mark Clatternburg for a stray elbow sent in the direction of Villa’s Chris Herd. He could well find himself on the bench for the Wigan clash this weekend with Tevez certain to be recalled. Edin Dzeko could also earn a chance to impress. Mancini gave us this brief insight into his thinking going into the weekend…

“I hope to have Vincent Kompany and Nigel de Jong back for the weekend and it was good that Edin Dzeko had a rest and Carlos only played for 30 minutes. It was a good night for us.”

Arsenal’s routine 5-0 win over Orient was notable for one thing – Nicklas Bendtner’s hat-trick – a feat that surely puts him in the box seat for the striker role in a 4-2-3-1 against Barcelona and, at the same time, offers a reminder to Fantasy Managers as to his frustrating talent.

With Robin Van Persie sidelined, Arsene Wenger “auditioned” both his understudies for the role. Marouane Chamakh started up front last night, Bendtner began life out on the right flank. Elsewhere Tomas Rosicky was the only survivor from Sunday’s Carling Cup misery as Wenger blooded several youngsters and handed recalls to the likes of Abou Diaby, Denilson and Emmanuel Eboue.

Chamakh’s opening goal (his first since November 27) from a Rosicky assist got the ball rolling and duly sparked Bendtner into goalscoring action. The Dane looped a header from a Kieran Gibbs cross for his opener, before blasting a fine cross-shot home for the Gunners third. His hat-trick was claimed from the spot after the lively Gibbs was hauled down.

While Bendtner presented his credentials as Van Persie’s stand-in, the Arsenal boss took the opportunity to enlighten us further on the injury status of the Dutch striker in his post-match analysis. The verdict is that Van Persie will be out for four weeks – and that is Wenger’s optimistic view…

“It is a ligament at the back of the knee, a tear in the ligament. It is three to four weeks, I take the short delay because I am an optimist but it could be four. As well it is the international break during that period so is it three or four, for us it is the same.”

That would appear to pencil in a return for the league fixture with Blackpool on April 10, although Wenger admitted that, with such an injury, a setback is always a possibility.

“Let’s hope he can play after the international break. I listen to what the medical people say to me and you never know, he can have a setback. You can never guarantee.”

Fantasy Managers certainly seem unlikely to hold on to Van Persie as an asset given his history of injuries and complications. There are numerous alternatives available, our current poll on the frontpage is currently canvassing opinion on the most likely. It will be interesting to see if Bendtner fares better in that particular vote after last night’s events. He currently has just 2% of your vote.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm starting to buy into the Balotelli hype, his finishing is extraordinary and so is his combination of power and pace for a player his age. He might very well be the best "young" striker there is.

On the other hand I don't really think he'll ever be able to fix his mental issues, so it might mean nothing in the end. An interesting one to follow for sure.

I am doom. After doing 8 points hit, my team will be
    Foster
    Coleman Kolarov Huth
    Nolan VDV Nani Nasri
    Tevez Torres Rooney

First eleven sounds good, but look at my bench:
    Stockdale, Murphy,Kelly, Ohara.

    NONE OF THEM CAN PLAY.

I wouldn't rely on VDV playing if you need him to field 11.

Take a step back.. Have you taken the 8 point hit yet? If not, what is your squad, there must be a better way of ensuring you can field 11 men?

        It's actually a mistake by me. I did my 8 points hit for Cahill->Nasri, RVP->Torres, Brunt->Ohara

The Brunt->Ohara was a mistake. Should've wait for more news on VDV before doing that move. I worried I will not have free time to do transfer the next few games though.

So just praying that VDV will play. Come on you Dutch genius!

Agreed on wait and see. I hate taking hits! But with 7 guys out I had no choice! My list includes Nasri obviously, Lamps would leave little money to get likes of VDV back. Also thinking getting Djourou back for Kelly or even a 4 pointer getting Baines for Vidic as he has DGW and could make a profit there.

I certainly think Djourou has better prospects than Kelly (not just because I've got him) and Baines or Coleman have a decent run until GW33.When Kelly may be a good trade back in.

        Foster (Begovic)
        Baines Coleman Carr (Kolarov/Rafael)
        Silva/Young/Nasri/Ferguson (Nani)
        Rooney/Saha/Bent

The reason for benching Nani is due to me trying to catch a lead with everyone above me having him, so hoping hes doesnt do much against Liverpool or is it best to not risk loosing possible ground?

As much as I realy want to play Kolarov and know he has great attacking potential I dont want to remove any of my DGW defenders so if Nani comes in who should drop to the bench from Bent or Ferguson?

One of the most baffling decisions ever last night with Houllier bringing Young and Downing on with the game already well and truly lost at 3-0. If he didn’t start with them there was absolutely no point bringing them on after that, if they had gotten injured there would have been a revolt.

Can't believe he didn't start them in the first place. Beat Citeh and then you have a home quarter final against Reading and then after that who knows...

Had to laugh at Houllier justifying the selection, talking about how many internationals he had starting. Nowadays, most squads are bursting with internationals, doesn't mean they're any good.

it was shambolic. A complete disgrace of a performance. People wonder why theres violence in the streets? both managers should be ashamed.

But you've got to love the passion 🙂 next two are the important ones imo. League cup final and league game at Ibrox 🙂 i still think we can win the league and with a bit of luck beat PSV 🙂

Couldn't agree more, did he really expect Young and Downing to go and rescue the game at 3-0, against City? Was very frustrating to watch and I'm not even a Villa fan.

On the plus side, did you see the two Villa fans keeping the ball and doing headers in the crowed?

Nasri is good for this week. But once Fab is back - and it looks like he will be for the next prem game at least - then Nasri becomes a 2pt wonderkid.
Longterm Nasri is not good but for this gwk he's the one player I don't have that I fear the most.

I would say that you should get rid of RVP and Kelly first as they are the longest injuries. Keep Adam as he's back next gameweek and is a bonus point magnet. Maybe bring in Beckford because of his good fixtures for the next few weeks. Hope this helps

Here's the team for the weekend. No hits, already made my free sub Odem -Zigic and plenty of doubts.
        Foster
        Djourou Huth Coleman
        Nani VDV Barton A Young
        Zigic Tevez(C) rooney

Bench: Adam - Vidic - Evatt

Anyone think I should do a pts hit and ship Evatt out for Luiz/Ridgewell? Barton and VDv are both doubts at this stage.

Probably best you take a hit for DGW'er. More likely to get your points back. Which one however I do not know. Maybe get rid of Barton or VDV as they are injured, whereas Evatt will at least play

            EVatt v chelsea = 0-2 pts.
Barton may play and could score big.

I think its important with dgwks to think long term as well and only get players in you are happy to keep for a few weeks anyway. that's why I got Rooney in last week and Zigic this week.

Evatt out for a bham defender like ridgewell or the get him while he's cheap Luiz makes more sense to me. But if VDV is definitely out it would certainly through a points hit sized cat among my pigeons.

he'll play, he's on form. He has a double...and then another in a few weeks and looks to be bham's main goal threat. He moves like Hattie Jaques but is as tenacious in the box as Sid James.

        Foster Bego
Djourou Jose Enrique Coleman Kelly Shawcross
Nani Ash Young Arteta Bentley Silva
        Tevez Odem RVP

Thinking of shipping Odem but is anything else worth doing? I would lose RVP but nobody fills me with confidence of a big return, i'd lose Kelly but whoever i bring in a might not even play so what a waste of a hit?

Trying not to, probably just going to do RVP to Rooney and hope either Barton or RJohnson plays. With so many players out I don't want to take a hit shifting out Odem, the only attractive midfield prospect seems to be Nasri (not too keen on Arteta) and if I've got Fabs coming back next GW I don't see the point. I could do Cahill to VdV next week perhaps.

        Morning guys,

Do I need to take any hits this week? Already used my freebie. Squad is:

        Foster
        Coleman, Kolarov, Djourou, Rafael
        Nani, A Young, VDV
        Tevez, Zigic, Berbatov

        Subs: Stockdale, Kelly, Adam, Cahill
        Bank 3.4m

I think it's unlikely i'll be able to field 10 let alone 11 so thinking about Rafael & Cahill -> R Johnson & Nasri for an 8 point hit - good or bad move? Thanks!
