A senseless dismissal for Robin Van Persie. A seething response from Arsene Wenger. A public apology from Cesc Fabregas. Beyond all the noise, it’s difficult to deny the quality of Lionel Messi and Barcelona, as Arsenal were again beaten in the Nou Camp to end another Champions League campaign.

Robin Van Persie’s inclusion in the Arsenal lineup was a cause for optimism. With 56 minutes gone in a compelling encounter, that was to melt away as the Dutchman provided the pivotal moment for all the wrong reasons. The red card shown to Van Persie was of course ridiculously harsh – although it must be said that his earlier booking for a hand in the face of Dani Alves, a flashpoint stirred by sheer frustration, was folly on Van Persie’s part given the intensity of the match. While referee Massimo Busacca arguably “killed the game”, the spectacle of Barcelona ruthlessly dismantling Arsenal’s ten-men was still worthy of admiration.

Fantasy Managers will again be concerned of how another key defeat will impact on Arsenal’s season. The fact that one refereeing decision proved so crucial could provide consolation; Wenger has not surprisingly taken every opportunity to focus the actions of the referee, rather than any of his team’s failings on the night.

Van Persie certainly failed to make an impression in his 56 minutes. He was not alone. The same could be said of Cesc Fabregas who returned from injury to make a muted contribution – significant in the main for his errant back-heel which led to Lionel Messi’s masterful finish for the opening goal. It also led to a public apology from Fabregas via Twitter…

“Great support from the arsenal fans. I take full blame for the result tonight. One of the worst moments of my life. I apologise.”

Arsenal’s next opponents are United in the FA Cup. Saturday’s Old Trafford tie will decide whether the Gunners will then face at trip to West Brom in gameweek 30. We need a positive result for either side to ensure that. Should the West Brom trip remain intact, then Wenger will surely be looking to get his title ambitions back on track by fielding his big guns at the Hawthorns. His lineup at Old Trafford will be interesting. On last night’s evidence both Van Persie and Fabregas have work to do on the training ground; the break for the FA Cup should hand them the time to regain sharpness to threaten further Fantasy returns once we resume gameweek action.

Van Persie’s return to fitness confines both Marouane Chamakh and Nicklas Bendtner, who wasted the opportunity to write himself into Arsenal folklore thanks to a heavy first touch late on last night, to cameo roles. The return of Fabregas meanwhile will offer slight concern to those who turned attentions to Samir Nasri – the Frenchman will surely remain a key figure for Arsenal’s run-in but his role at set-plays will likely diminish. Some rotation with Andrey Arshavin, however infrequent, could also be a factor.

The Gunners could also be without keeper Wojciech Szczesny. Wenger confirmed that the Pole suffered a dislocated finger in the first-half last night and will be assessed later this week. Manuel Almunia’s showing in the Nou Camp will surely put him back in favour and he could now stake a claim for the number one spot for the run-in.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Alright guys, whats the best way to hold onto a lead? I'v got a 110 point lead in my mini league at the momemnt, but it used to be 150+

    Do i try and match my rival teams, try not spend any points on tranfers or continue as usual (bringing in players who i think will do well regardless of what rivals do)???

    I'm 86 points behind with this team (and 4.3 in the bank)

    Foster, Al Habsi
    Kolarov, Huth, Coleman, Rafael, Djourou
    Nani, Van der Vaart, Nasri, Downing, Meireles
    Tevez, Berbatov, Zigic.

    Lots of changes need to be made, particuarly with the 'stereotypical' players - Kolarov, Huth, Coleman, Rafael, Nani, Berba, etc.

    Where would you start and what would you do? Am willing to take a few 4pt hits over the next week to change things up quickly and starting getting points in...

      nani to lampard
      rafael or kolarov to luiz
      berba to anelka for the chances of him playing both games in the double, or carroll if he looks like starting for liverpool

        Thanks man, I'd had a few similar ideas:

        Nani -> Lampard
        Nasri or Meireles -> O'Hara
        Berbatov -> Rooney
        Zigic -> Sturridge, Suarez or Carroll
        Rafael -> Luiz
        Kolarov -> Hangeland/Hughes

        Agree/disagree with any of these?

    Begovic Szczsney
    Kolarov ShawX Simpson Coleman Carr
    Nani Barton Lampard Young Adam
    Rooney Zigic Tevez

    2.0 in the bank

    I was thinking

    Tevez Barton & Kolarov - VDV RVP & Djourou

    Any other transfers you would consider?

    Great guy and even greater manager, this Pep Guardiola. Despite outplaying the Gunners for 90min he said that he can understand Arsenal's anger about the red card decision. Could you see Sir Alex, Arsene or any other PL coach making such a comment. His attitude is as impressive as his players passing game.

    Great interview from Pep last night, confident but not obnoxious and in all fairness he called it exactly how it was. Funny in Wenger's interview with Geoff Shreaves where he asked him was it disappointing that they didn't register a single attempt on target night to which Wenger said it was hard down to 10 men and Geoff said that up to 56 minutes there wasn't an Arsenal attempt on target, stick it to him!

    So, consensous in the Sky studio was that Barcelona will only be beaten by a similarly all out attacking team, where they said Arsenal set up to defend, not sure I agree with this but it would at least provide a magnificent spectacle.

      I disagree with the Sky pundits there. Take them on at their own game and there'll only be one winner. They're too good.

      Inter did the job on them last year (and deserved to go through too, in my opinion) - dogged defending and hit them with pace on the counter when you can. Tough task either way.

      Have to disagree with the Sky studio there. I think Barcelona will only be beaten over two legs by a team who defends for their lives in the away leg and then try to just overrun Barca in the home leg, much like Inter last year. I could see Man United, Chelsea, Inter or Bayern doing it with some luck. Oh, and teams could always hope Messi is injured too. He's even more important to Barcelona than people give him credit for imo.

      Remember that Barcelona's away record in the CL is noway near as good as it could be. Arsenal are basically a light version of Barcelona and when that is the case teams always struggle. The teams in the Premiership trying to play with the same style as Man United for example are always absolutely battered by Man United, because when you're just doing the same as your opponent but worse that is how it will end.

        Exactly. I'm a gunner and it is quite clear that Barcelona plays the same style as Arsenal, but better, and for 90 minutes. You cant beat them at their own game. I think Chelsea did an incredible job on them 2 seasons ago and were very unlucky not to go through to the final. That Iniesta goal was crushing!

      JU

      Arsene clearly had a tactic and it could have worked. It was to shut up shop for for 60 odd minutes and then to attack them when they fatigue as Premiership clubs are naturally fitter. We scored against them 4 times in the last 20 or so minutes in 2 previous games. This was hard to do when you only have 10 men and your main goal threat was the one sent off. If that Bendtner chance fell to Van Persie it could have been a different story.

        I agree completely as to the chance at the end, Bendtner should of finished, game over almost, BUT the fact they did not threaten the Barcelona goal once in the time RVP was on the pitch, leads me to believe they weren't going to, Barcelona have more energy than any other team so I don't think tiring them out will work.

        Walcott was missed last night for me.

    Who would you bench?

    Foster
    Luiz-Walker-Hangeland-Coleman-(Gohouri)
    Arteta-Lampard-VDV-Downing-(Barton)
    Berbatov-(Tevez)-Doyle

    I'm thinking the brackets but not sure

      Despite his obvious dip in form I would never bench Tevez against the big boys, he always comes out to play even more so in those games.

      Coleman's position is in doubt at the minute, I would bench Coleman and play Tevez, Coleman is starting to have less and less impact, evidenced by his demotion to the bench of late, despite the talk of his fatigue.

    😉 Anti-football

    Since opta stats began in 2004 Arsenal are the first ever team not to register a single shot in a Champions League game.

    If you include Champions league, Europa league, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga and the Premiership Arsenal were the first team not to register a shot during a match since Almeria were defeated 1-0 by Barcelona in 2009.

    Yay or nay for the following trades:

    86 points behind and really need to do something to this team. 4.3 in the bank.

    Foster, Al Habsi
    Kolarov, Huth, Coleman, Rafael, Djourou
    Nani, Van der Vaart, Nasri, Downing, Meireles
    Tevez, Berbatov, Zigic.

    Don't mind taking a few 4pt hits over the next few weeks to change this up quick and put myself in a good position to close this 86 point gap.

    Here's a few transfer ideas... Pick the most vital (doesn't matter how many).

    a. Kolarov -> Luiz
    b. Rafael -> Cahill or Hangeland
    c. Coleman -> Baines (guy I'm chasing has Coleman)
    d. Nani -> Lampard
    e. Nasri or Meireles -> O'Hara
    f. Berbatov -> Rooney
    g. Zigic -> Sturridge or Suarez

          No Arsenal fans are saying that we would have won, or that we were the better team. It was evident that Barcelona are insanely good.

          However, a red card is a red card. 11 vs 10 is more difficult than 11 vs 11, there is no denying that. We didnt deserve to win, with or without RVP, but we wouldhave at least had a better chance, and so I dont think you can possibly say that it "wouldnt have been any different".

          Im not bitter though, I always knew our chances of going through to the next round were slim. Im proud that we at least came closer than we did last season, well done boys. Can you imagine how difficult it is to play against Barcelona? How demoralising, especially when you're used to having the lion's share of possession week in, week out.

    QUESTION:

    Sorry if this sounds stupid, I feel as though I should know the answer...

    RVP red carded, but Arsenal out of the competition. So does this red card now have no ramifications and it disappears? or will he miss the first game of next years champs league? Or have I missed the correct answer completely?
