Manchester United are facing up to a defensive injury crisis after picking up further casualties in tonight’s 2-1 Champions League triumph over Marseille.

The win, inspired by a brace from the blossoming Javier Hernandez, was marred by hamstring injuries suffered by both John O’Shea and his replacement Rafael.

These setbacks arrive on top of concerns surrounding Nemanja Vidic who missed tonight’s game with a calf injury, while Rio Ferdinand remains sidelined with his own calf problem.

O’Shea began the evening at right-back with Wes Brown partnering Chris Smalling in the centre and Patrice Evra skippering the side at left-back. O’Shea failed to complete the first-half however, pulling up, clutching his hamstring on 36 minutes. Substitute Rafael then appeared to suffer a similar injury and was stretchered off after 69 minutes to be replaced by brother Fabio.

It’s early days, but it seems pretty safe to assume that the pair will face a spell on the sidelines. Alex Ferguson now faces up to a potentially testing Old Trafford meeting with Bolton this weekend with a makeshift back four.

Reports earlier tonight stated that United had confirmed that Vidic would be sidelined for around three weeks, missing Saturday’s game and the West Ham fixture to follow. Ferguson however, failed to shed any light on the Vidic situation post-match, providing a rather coy response when asked if the inspirational Serb would be back in his defence against the Trotters…

”We’ll have to wait and see…Jonny Evans started training this week so hopefully he will be back.”

The availability of Jonny Evans will at least hand Ferguson a new option in the backline, even if it will fail to inspire any confidence in United fans and Fantasy Managers alike.

The United rearguard is clearly hard to predict at this stage, but a quartet of Brown, Smalling, Evans and Evra could well be the lineup that takes to the field to tackle the threat of Kevin Davies, Daniel Sturridge and Johan Elmander come Saturday.

There are defensive mid-price options to explore there but, given that United have kept just a single clean sheet in their last seven league matches, investment seems a long shot. Looking at the situation from a different perspective, Ferguson’s side will likely need at least a couple of goals to see off the Bolton threat. With attack United’s most effective form of defence in this scenario, we could well see the likes of Nani, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez fetch sizable returns should Owen Coyle’s side stretch the patched-up United defence.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Smalling more regular at the same price.

Sturridge is a major threat to that cleanie though.

Barton still doubtful. Go with Sturridge.

Against Utd's makeshift defence he could do some damage.

I like his goal scoring nose, but I think his stock will go down when Park is fit, then SAF can roll with 'the Matix' again.

    my team for next week:

anyone any suggestions on the subs?

    Al Habsi

    Baines Huth Walker

    Nani Adam Young VDV Nasri

    Van Persie Tevez

    Subs:
    Hangeland Coleman Odemwinge

am tempted to play Coleman with arteta out and drop Tevez.
    Does that sound crazy?

No, that's not necessarily crazy, but it is a waste of a £12m player.

Like I said in the prev post, rather than drop Tevez why not get Rooney instead and play him?

You have Baines already so Coleman is not necessary.

It gets worse. The Swiss media have just reported that the Swiss FA have now accepted Arsenal's assessment that Djourou will be out for a long while.

    http://news.search.ch/sport/fussball/2011-03-15/fussball-ohne-djourou-gegen-bulgarien

"According to a statement from the Swiss FA late on Tuesday evening it is "impossible" that Johan Djourou will play in the Euro 2012 qualifying match in Bulgaria on 26th March. Djourou will be examined on Thursday by a specialist. A decision will then by made as to whether an operation is required on his dislocated shoulder. Either way, his club Arsenal believes that he will be absent for several months. Djourou had been injured on Saturday in a collision in a Cup match against Manchester United (0:2)."

I can't afford to take anymore hits, so i'm going to hold onto Vidic and review after the Bolton game, if he starts then that's a bonus but if not i'll look to downgrade for the following GW.

Here's my plan: Walker in for Vidic. Van Persie in for Odemwingie..
    Wait.
    Lampard in for Nolan.

Gonna leave me with a pretty gutted defense of:
    Coleman, lost his place,
Simpson budget option on average defense
    Carr ditto
Walker ditto with a bit of attacking potential.
and Kolarov never know if he's going to start. Ugh.

@ Greendreams. I haven't sorted that dilemma out yet, most likely Yaya and tevez ➡ Arsenal coverage and
    Kolarov ➡ Luiz
won't be doing all 3 transfers as i'll possibly hold off till Citeh have played Sunderland at home, and like everyone else I've got a few injuries in my '15'to ponder.

Kos is a very good young defender imo but the point is for kos to get cs points then you have to rely on squillaci's ability. Makes him a poor choice imo.

You see the way he talked about conceding less goals - ya will that was relevant to a conversation about buying a defender, And comparing to United defense general accepted as the best is also relevant since the stats shows they are similar enough regarding goals conceeded.

You again using anyone conversation to say "ohhh look we are ahead te heheheh" is amazing

And yes having more points is irrelevant when considering cleansheets. You brought this up why?

Wolf i wouldnt buy Kos btw all things considered, Arsenal dont have that much of an amazing run to come when looking at defence.

I would certainly buy an Arse defender over a United one atm, but when Vidic and/or Rio are back I think there's only one winner.......

It was never about and Arsenal defender vs A Utd one. AP just found it hilarious that i was considering Koscielny even though we've conceded less goals then other top sides this season.

Yeah, that was a bit irrelevant tbh

I've certainly got nothing against Arse defenders in FPL on principle, but with Almunia or an out of practice Lehman possibly in goal I'm steering well clear.....

btw- don't get kolarov, I'm extremely annoyed at myself for bringing him in and I think he's becoming a rotation risk......

Great post. I do love it when AP brings up irrelevant points when he knows he's wrong.

I don't see many better options then Kos at the moment. I need to replace Kelly, Kolarov and Coleman soon.

Depends on funds. 90% sure im going with Bale as it means i can get Lampard in for Silva without taking a hit later. Walcott will come in for Bale in a few weeks anyway.

Stoke's fixtures are pretty dire, i'd lose him.

      Just play:

      Foster
      Huth Coleman Ivanovic
      Nasri Nani Lampard Adam
      Berbatov Tevez Zigic

Assuming that the word is that Zigic will be fit to start. If not, then I'd take a hit to get rid of Barton.

Arteta dropped today and fantasytools only had him at 69%
They were way off - not just by 5 or 10% - this time

I had him as a possible faller on my site. Drops are pretty random now.
