Manchester United are facing up to a defensive injury crisis after picking up further casualties in tonight’s 2-1 Champions League triumph over Marseille.

The win, inspired by a brace from the blossoming Javier Hernandez, was marred by hamstring injuries suffered by both John O’Shea and his replacement Rafael.

These setbacks arrive on top of concerns surrounding Nemanja Vidic who missed tonight’s game with a calf injury, while Rio Ferdinand remains sidelined with his own calf problem.

O’Shea began the evening at right-back with Wes Brown partnering Chris Smalling in the centre and Patrice Evra skippering the side at left-back. O’Shea failed to complete the first-half however, pulling up, clutching his hamstring on 36 minutes. Substitute Rafael then appeared to suffer a similar injury and was stretchered off after 69 minutes to be replaced by brother Fabio.

It’s early days, but it seems pretty safe to assume that the pair will face a spell on the sidelines. Alex Ferguson now faces up to a potentially testing Old Trafford meeting with Bolton this weekend with a makeshift back four.

Reports earlier tonight stated that United had confirmed that Vidic would be sidelined for around three weeks, missing Saturday’s game and the West Ham fixture to follow. Ferguson however, failed to shed any light on the Vidic situation post-match, providing a rather coy response when asked if the inspirational Serb would be back in his defence against the Trotters…

”We’ll have to wait and see…Jonny Evans started training this week so hopefully he will be back.”

The availability of Jonny Evans will at least hand Ferguson a new option in the backline, even if it will fail to inspire any confidence in United fans and Fantasy Managers alike.

The United rearguard is clearly hard to predict at this stage, but a quartet of Brown, Smalling, Evans and Evra could well be the lineup that takes to the field to tackle the threat of Kevin Davies, Daniel Sturridge and Johan Elmander come Saturday.

There are defensive mid-price options to explore there but, given that United have kept just a single clean sheet in their last seven league matches, investment seems a long shot. Looking at the situation from a different perspective, Ferguson’s side will likely need at least a couple of goals to see off the Bolton threat. With attack United’s most effective form of defence in this scenario, we could well see the likes of Nani, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez fetch sizable returns should Owen Coyle’s side stretch the patched-up United defence.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Tevez > Rooney

Anyone thinking of bringing in Chicharito instead of Rooney? There's obviously a school of thought that he doesn't play enough to justify bringing him in, but he's started ahead of Berbatov in four out of the last five games and the only one he didn't start in (Anfield) he came off the bench and scored.

If he does keep playing then I'd argue he's more likely to score than Rooney is. Obviously Rooney is better due to the lack of rotation risk, but you're paying an extra 5.5 million for that security.

    GK: Foster, Begovic
DF: Coleman, Johnson R, Kolarov, Huth, Luiz
MF: Young A, Nani, Cahill, Walcott, Adam
    FW: Saha, Odem, Tevez

    i still remaining 5.5M.

Nani, Cahill & Walcott are doubt to play?
should i do Cahill/Walcott -> VDV or Odem -> RVP?
    or any better sugesstion?

Just a few pointers to everyone about the hernandez over berbatov debate.

Hernandez= 9 starts/ Goals 10/ Mins 950 odd/ 15 Points won for Utd with a contribution of 9 goals and an assist!(only one goal that we cud've done without). Effective contribution

Berbatov= 23 starts/ Goals 19/ Mins 1900 odd/ 18 Points won for Utd with a contribution of 12 goals and 1 assist (7 goals we could've done without). Pretty effective as well no doubt but pales in comparison to hernandez's stats.

Also, surely you have more pressing trades to make with injuries about. Both Nolan and Yaya are decent options for their price. If you must, a coin is probably the best way to separate them.

Kolarov to Walker makes sense, but I don't think you need to take the hit for Brunt to VDV. Although I have VDV already I'm not convinced that he's on form and fit. Given Arsenal's defensive problems then I'd keep Brunt for another week.

But what do I know. 🙂

            Huth Walker Baines Vidic (Coleman)
            Nani Adam VDV Downing (Barton)
            Tevez Beckford (Zigic)

            8.1 in the bank.

Thinking of doing no changes this week and hoping that VDV and Zigic play. Looks like Vidic may be out and see above for my concerns about Nani.

If any changes then probably Zigic to RVP/Wellbeck/Bent/Sturridge.

I'm kind of vexed though, since I've already doubled up on Stoke defenders (Huth/Begovic) and Everton defenders (Baines/Coleman) and also have two Villa players already (Walker/Downing) so although Bent has a very good fixture for the next three weeks then so does RVP.

Since I have no Arsenal coverage then Zigic to RVP makes sense. But he does tend to get crocked a lot.

                  Thanks for your suggestions.

Jinswick - i'm also worried about Berba. I'm selling but really need 1 more game(with some decent pts) from him vs Bolton. My mini league rival and h2h opponent both have Rooney and it's worrying me since they will prob both capt Rooney.

With Ferguson you never really know what will happen next. Little Pea playing well could mean he is first choice and gets a rest maybe? Maybe not.

Yeah, I'm torn. Struggling to field 11 as it is, and if Berba is benched I may change my plan of:

Tevez & Kelly -> RVP & Walker (4 points), to
        Berba & Arteta -> RVP & Adam (4 points)

I think we'll both have to wait till the deadline and if Berba looks likely to be benched then get rid this week. What do you think?

    Guys

Now that Valencia is back and playing is he a viable alternative to Nani or will he be rotated? If he's going to be a regular starter then a front eight of

VdV / Nasri Valencia Lampard Adam Young
    Rooney Carroll RVP / Tevez

with cash in the bank looks very nice for the next few weeks.

          Do you know what?

I'm seriously starting to wonder whether shipping out Nani and getting Rooney is a better move for me.

Rooney appears to be the best Utd player to get and Valencia may well eat into Nani's points in the remaining weeks.

I could replace with Young and get RVP too, which would give me a front 3 of Bent, Rooney and Van Persie.

With the teamsheet last night I initially thought Berba would start on Saturday, but with a defensive crisis on his hands (unless Vidic is fit) Fergie will need goals and in theory, he should stick with Little Pea and Rooney up front. I suppose Fergie will have the Blackburn and Blackpool games in mind when Berba exploded into life but Bolton will try to rattle United physically and on paper it doesn't seem like the type of game which Berba could excel in.

Unless Vidic is back, investment in the United backline looks unrewarding.

Only if you have nothing more pressing.

If you can play 3 other defs and you have other areas that need attention then I'd leave him for now.

I will get rid but I have to decide between Rooney and Van Persie this week and changing Kolarov won't help me in that case.

3 from Walker, Coleman, RJ and Huth will keep my def ticking over this week.

Vidic really is an expensive luxury now. With Rooney on form and Hernandez scoring his goal output is probably done for the season now.

Looking at the last few months it seems Berbs plays at home and Hernandez gets the nod on the road. That said, its no indicator that he won't start Hernandez against Bolton.

I don't have any Utd strikers, but my feeling is that Berbs still figures heavily in Sir Alex's plans for the rest of the season.

Hernandez could be a useful 3rd striker. But you could be left with games where he doesn't play or comes on too late to do anything. £6.4m is a lot to pay for a guy whose starting role is uncertain.

I'm likely to wait a few weeks and get Welbeck, who is £2m cheaper, won't be rotated and has nice fixtures from GW32 on.

Yeah.....and i have some other areas to look for too...oh i forgot i have 3 players to look out for ...djouru,evaat,zigic 😐
              neways thnkng this most likely
              evaat-- walker\bramble
              and thn this line up--

              VDS
              Walker\Bramble Coleman Huth
              VDV Nani Lampard Downing Ohara
              Tevez Saha

              Bench--- Foster zigic djouru kolarov

i have few worries in it--
1.no arsenal coverage(means no rvp and nasri),Arsenal have a decent fixture agaisnt west brom.
2.No Man u forward, actually ronney is the only safest bet...so mght be tevez> ronney is the option...but i just wanaa hold on to tevez for next gamweek

              Ne suggestion guys??

I wish i was drunk. But alas, i'm at work.

Basis for the Chica for a hit play was due to my team being ravaged by injuries. I wish I knew whether Berba or Chica were gonna start this w/e. If Berba then I'd probably do Tevez & Kelly -> RVP & Walker (4 point hit). If Chica then i'd probably do Arteta & Berba -> Adam & RVP. Either way though, if Zigic doesn't play then I only have 10 starters, and so the move for Chica for a hit isn't all that bad, especially if he is likely to keep his spot over Berbs. What you reckon?

I would be wary of Hernandez just because you never know when he might be benched, it would be a gamble.

I think i'll stear clear, as is mentioned earlier Wellbeck has a nice run in and is cheaper so looks a safer option for the third striker slot..

Chap sent me an e-mail in work yesterday and instead of typing "diverts" he wrote "divers"; It looked weird.

I didn't even look at the last race at Cheltenham until I seen the result...10/1!!

Lampard is overrated. He's almost certain to play like shite this weekend. If the bonus judges got some senses left in them then Lampard'd get no baps either. Penaltywise, I do hope Chelsea get none in the next few weeks.
