Man United found an uneasy passage to the last eight of the Champions League, surviving a fretful conclusion to see off Marseille courtesy of a Javier Hernandez double strike. Further injuries at the back blighted an otherwise jubilant night at Old Trafford – here’s the notes…

Alex Ferguson was without Nemanja Vidic at the back as the Serb missed out with a calf injury. Reports last night suggested that Vidic would be sidelined for three weeks – Ferguson avoided confirming this post-match. The absence of Vidic meant that Wes Brown and Chris Smalling took up the central defensive roles with Patrice Evra skippering the side. Nani returned from his shin gash to take up his role on the flank, with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick also earning midfield starts. Antonio Valencia completed his comeback from long-term injury by replacing a tiring Nani on 61 minutes.

Hernandez has now notched 16 goals in United colours in his first season – a superb return from the Mexican. Alex Ferguson was, not surprisingly, eager to lavish further praise on his fledgling goal-poacher following last night’s haul…

“We thought he was a young lad who was going to progress and maybe have to get used to our training and English football, but he’s been an absolute star and a real bonus for us…His movement is fantastic, he’s always on the move, and his timing of runs is terrific. He’s always on the last defender.”

For Fantasy Managers, the blossoming partnership with between Hernandez and Wayne Rooney appears to cast serious doubt over the involvement of Dimitatr Berbatov. Ferguson went on to pick out the effectiveness of his current strike pairing, offering further evidence to suggest that they have become established as a first choice option…

“They’re a good combination. Their partnership has been developing really well. Where Wayne has played in the last couple of games has really threatened teams. He’s got such power and speed with ball.”

Berbatov has started just one of the last four league games and, following this latest brace from Hernandez, he looks set to be frozen out again when Bolton arrive at Old Trafford on Saturday. Over 29,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers have already transferred Berbatov out of their squads in the gameweek, with over 70,000 doing the same in the previous gameweek. Hernandez, at just 6.4 in the FPL, has so far seen over 9000 transfers in but could attract more interest ahead of the Bolton clash.

The injuries sustained by John O’Shea and his replacement, Rafael, were covered in our earlier article. United have this morning offered little new information on their situation but have at least posted some official comment. As indicated previously, Ferguson now faces the prospect of facing up to the Bolton attack with a patched-up back four with Patrice Evra his only available first-choice defender.

Paul Scholes will sit out of Saturday’s clash with Bolton through suspension while Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park will be remain doubts having missed last night’s tie through illness and a hamstring injury respectively. Valencia could see more action against the Trotters, although, at this stage, he would seem likely to start on the bench once again.

United’s progress will see them face a Quarter-Final first leg tie on April 5/6. That will follow a gameweek 31 trip to Upton Park in the Premier League on April 2, while the second leg on April 12/13 will follow the gameweek 32 home clash with Fulham. Fantasy Managers will need to be wary of the threat of rotation around these fixtures then – although right now, Ferguson’s options are severely limited in defence and midfield by a string of injuries. The Berbatov situation up front is certainly one to monitor however – it’s possible that the Bulgarian will be given league starts with Hernandez used for the European ties – or vice versa of course.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

SAF said Vidic had a slight calf problem, and if he played him last night he could well be out for three weeks. Precautionary thing by the sounds of it. I'd expect him to play this weekend.

Thoughts on this djorue/Kelly situation....week ago plan was Kelly to Walker, two days ago it was Djorue to Walker and now we are back on Kelly to Walker.

I wouldn't play Kelly until gw34, so it's absolutely definetely worth to take a little gamble and ditch Kelly now and hope that Djorue will be back for gw 32 or 33. Yes or No?

Transfer involves 4 point hit though, so I suppose I can sleep my nights confident of Walker place in starting line up?

    Cheers!

I'm in the same situation. normally i'd do Kelly - Walker but wondering if Walker is really likely to score more than 4 points to make the hit worthwile, might be better just to use 10 players?

He's supposed to behind Harnandez right? Maybe it was the way Marseilles was defending, but a lot of the time I recall him running up the left and trying to cross in, like Valencia on the other side, with Scholes and Giggs more cantral.

But I wasn't paying that much attention. so a heatmap would be nice... hint hint...

    STATS (cricket)

Does anyone know if it is true that Jonathan Trott has scored the most runs at International level in 1 day cricket - 1,147 - without ever hitting a six?

If true, that's extraordinary! Isn't his strike rate quite reasonable as well??

Apparently Dion Ebrahim of Zimbabwe scored 1443 ODI runs without hitting a 6.

You can't argue with Trott's average and speed at getting to 1000 runs but I just think its not acceptable to have a batsmen who can't hit 6s in ODIs

The point is, sometimes you need sixes. If you can't hit them, you're not much good to anyone. Even most tailenders can smash it over the fence.

Having said that, I think Trott can. He just doesn't, so as not to risk his wicket.

I am getting rid of Berba. Although many say it could be one of those crazy games for him, it's more likely that he will start on the bench. It is more likely to be one of double digit games for RVP than the other way round.

I rarely gamble and only for 10p trebles on six or seven football teams so about £3.60 stake.Never on line as it makes gambling too easy.I was a croupier many moons ago and watched quite sensible people wank away a life's work.If it's fun stakes I see no real harm, the problem can be escalation, but then that surely is the same with drink and many other things.

fruit machines are too expensive now. the old £25 jackpot ones were ok as realistically if you put £40 in you would always get jackpot at that point so unlikley to lose a lot of cash

Tosey/stilicho - re the berba dilemma...

    I have tevez/berba/saha(don't ask!)

Which one of the above should I let go, and for who: Rvp or Rooney?

Last time I had Rooney + Berba it paid off as they scored 40 pts in gw 24 between the two of them...

Saha could still come good I reckon, the fixtures are good and they don't have a blank in 33. I'm actually considering shipping Tevez for RVP if Mancini keeps arsing around with Balotelli and Dzeko. Berbatov must be a frustrating player to have right now but I'd be tempted to give him one more week.

he has west ham away which is tough

fulham home which looks easy on paper but never turns out to be

      then a blank gameweek

id have a look at utds forum, redcafe, later in the week and see if most think he'll start or not, if he is likely to start hold onto him then switch him out next week
