We’re back and it feels good. An early pint on Friday evening. A lie-in on Saturday morning; the break had its benefits but the empty void of a weekend without gameweek action seemed suffocating.

The nervy twitch at 11.30am on Saturday was still there, but the brain remained confused as to why I was being led aimlessly around shops when I should have been sifting statistics and tinkering with transfers? What’s this fresh air business? Where’s the comforting glow of the laptop with Jeff chattering in my ear?

Everything was wrong back then, which is why I’m not the only one around these parts eagerly embracing the return of the Fantasy routine. That routine includes the Scout Picks – my way of getting my brain in gear for the gameweek and opening the floodgates for Friday night’s Fantasy musings. Let’s waste no more time.

The Defence

Finding five clean sheets looks a big ask yet again. While the likes of Aleksandar Kolarov and Leighton Baines both look shaky shutout choices, their attacking threat is sufficient to see them earn the nod in the Picks yet again. Both are set to play a major roles down the left-flank and at set-plays – Baines in particular will surely benefit from Mikel Arteta’s absence on direct free-kicks.

Around those two, I’ve opted for Birmingham’s Roger Johnson – preferred to his keeper Ben Foster, due to his set-piece goal threat and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus potential. The Arsenal back four is my other selection for a clean sheet – while I see United conceding at West Ham and Chelsea surrendering a goal at Stoke, Arsene Wenger’s men should dominate a travel-sick Blackburn at the Emirates and offer decent defensive potential as a result. Selection is difficult – with Johan Djourou and Wojciech Szczesny sidelined, there is no cheap route to take here. Laurent Koscielny at 5.9, offers the cheapest route and one which provides the greatest attacking threat from set-plays.

That leaves my keeper, a spot that goes to Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer. Blackpool will no doubt pose an attacking threat at the Cottage but Mark Hughes’ side have conceded just a couple of goals in their last five home encounters. Schwarzer, a key Fantasy signing last season, has never lived up to that billing this time around, but will be expected to return Save Points at the very least this gameweek.

The Midfield

Two of the midfield look pretty much essential for this and gameweeks to come. United’s Nani is the top scoring player in the Fantasy Premier League game and can be relied upon to threaten returns against any opposition. With West Ham posing a real threat to United this weekend, it could very well draw a real sting from the Portuguese winger.

Chelsea’s Frank Lampard meanwhile is becoming a more influential factor in Chelsea’s make-up and is always a key figure from set-plays and spot-kicks. Carlo Ancelotti’s side take strong form to Stoke – they will likely need to score at least a couple to come away with the points.

The remaining two midfield spots were up for grabs. Arsenal’s attacking potential at home to Blackburn has to be covered and in the end I’ve stuck with Samir Nasri as my pick. A slight gamble given Andrey Arshavin’s form and Theo Walcott’s return from injury, but I fully expect Nasri to start and to be an influence in a Gunners win, despite the presence of Cesc Fabregas to draw Bonus alongside him.

The final spot shows my confidence in Fulham – Clint Dempsey gets the shirt, despite international exertions with the US. Ian Holloway’s Blackpool side have conceded 15 goals in their last five away trips, while Fulham have won four of their last five in front of their own fans, scoring nine goals. That points to a home win with two to three goals in the game for the home side. Dempsey, as one of the biggest goal threats from midfield in the league, looks a good bet to be involved.

There are viable options elsewhere. Doubts over Tim Cahill’s starts dented his prospects but the Everton man remains a clear option at home to Villa. Equally, Ashley Young in opposition will take the confidence gained with England into a fixture that has brought the best from him in the past. Newcastle’s Kevin Nolan is worthy of a place on my Scout bench with Wolves at St James’ Park, while Tottenham’s Rafael Van der Vaart looks a starter and a key figure as always for Spurs at Wigan.

The Forwards

With Robin Van Persie given the all-clear after a midweek injury scare, his place in the Picks is assured. Arsenal will be expected to inflict some damage on a back four that no less than 16 goals in their last five away trips. If you’ve confidence in Van Persie starting, it’s difficult to look beyond him for your FPL armband.

Carlos Tevez is the obvious partner alongside him but his form is dismal, while opponents Sunderland have let in just six goals in their last five away journeys, with a 0-0 at the Emirates last time out. This will not be an easy weekend for Roberto Mancini’s men – Tevez included.

I’ve gone with the form guy then – Luis Suarez gets the final slot with Liverpool taking the trip to the Hawthorns to meet former boss Roy Hodgson. He’s tightened up the Baggies of late but then they conceded twice to Arsenal last time out and played Wovles, Birmingham and Stoke prior to that. I can see Liverpool notching a couple and Suarez remaining the key creator and threat – particularly with Andy Carroll providing ample distraction in support.

Beyond this little lot, there’s no doubt that Fulham’s Moussa Dembele and Bobby Zamora show potential, as does Jermain Defoe at Wigan and Wayne Rooney at Upton Park. I’ve opted for Everton’s Jermaine Beckford for my bench though – be sure to check out Big Dunc’s “Differentials” later for further insights into him and other “alternative” picks for the weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yep Walcott's your man for attacking pts dribb imo

Ps. Arsenals easy fixtures are running out fast though and yes I agree with you re bp's for nasri once fab and rvp are fit there is only 1bp left to split betweeen wilshere, walcott, nasri and maybe arshavin (arsh brings the threat of rotation for nasri into it also imo).

Anyway thats my two cents worth. How you doing this year? I have a disaster but still hanging onto 13k or so with a bit of time to pull my socks up yet 🙂

Wow great comeback Dribb, its been a crazy season though, really random.

Looking at your team your heading for choppy waters though imo. Jags, brunt, nolan and saha have to be moved on imo

You could do something like jags to walker/bramble, brunt to walcott, nolan to lampard, and saha to welbeck? Longer term I would look at doing foster to mignolet too

If I were you I would try and angle to get lamps in for the double but failing that your are prob better off leaving him and just getting young in as excepting gw32,32 and 34 I am not too bothered about lamps.

Sorry I have not got more time to look into it but have not really looked at my own team over the break so need to do a bit of study myself. best of luck

Whenever he has been fit he has played, as far as I can remember. He started laying off RVP, and vice versa, quite a bit before he got injured.
I just hope Nasri proves me wrong tomorrow and bags a goal!

Agreed exciplex and his pts per game ratio is actually higher than nasri even though he has had so many games where he was brought on late or did not last the full game(coming back from injury).

I am not sure but his pts per game WITH fab and rvp in the team would be higher even than the 5.3 it is whereas I think nasri's pts per game actually goes down when fab and rvp are playing (I am really not sure on this as it is only a gut feeling of mine so probably take it with a pinch of salt).

My feeling is if you have a decent front 8 then walcott should be a shoe in (I brought in nasri for a hit when walcott got injured last time and it was one of the worst moves I've made all season imo).

Ps. I agree with your observation re his position in relation to rvp also. I thought he was almost playing as a striker before he got injured.

OK and Dino appears to agree with you...but are you really saying Arshavin and Nasri will split the left-wing duties while Walcott plays every game on the right...when Walcott was playing were Nasri and Arshavin both fit?...or will they play Song holding and Fabs and Nasri central with Wilshire benched?

I'm still unconvinced about Walcotts pitch time

Ashavin will be the bench player coming in for nasri depending on how the game is going I'd say. The evidence was is that walcott has played when fit although there is a big if re his fitness but the position you are in he is a lovely gamble but if you were leading a league you might be better off staying away from those kind of gambles I suppose.

but I'm talking for the rest of the season...so I disagree that Arsh will be benched regularly so that Walcott plays if that's what you're saying

Thats the call and the gamble I would be taking if I were you and looking for a mid range arsenal midfielder. I do really think arshavin and nasri will share that right wing spot with walcott playing every game he is fit for.

I wish I had walcott over nasri and I am even thinking of taking a hit to do the switch but I dont think I will be able to bring myself to do it.

I sold Tevez a couple of weeks ago. Not sure what's happening at Man City but they look decidedly lacklustre at the moment.

If you still have him then I'd play him, but his form and points recently have been piss poor, so you have to hope he'll regain some form.

    CRICKET
its a fair assumption that whoever wins the toss tomorrow will bat and i suggest win ,thus they bet 10/11 either team to win the toss ,so the bet is 11/8 sri lanka win and if they win the toss youve basically got 11/8 a 10/11 chance.

    Nani, Adam, Ash Young, Nasri
    Tevez, Van Persie (C), Saha*

    Subs: Begovic, Adam, Carr, Huth,

Felt i needed to use my free this week to bring in Adam, and since I have taken too many hits the last few weeks, I do wanna try to go without one this week. But my defence is weak, but I have to pick anyway. Shawcross vs Chelsea or Evatt?

Also, start with Berbatov or Meireles? The one I am chasing in my minileague got Berbatov, but the one chasing me also got Berbatov, so I am not sure what i should do.

the more i look at that...wow! its BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

losing young for adam, one away mid for another...tactical genius mate! Then Luiz in for the defender he's playing against AWAY from home!!! You need to apply to sky sports for Andy Grays Job man....the tactical nous, and your ability to make incisive, meaningful decisions is unparallelled.

      1. How are you going to get CHS players in over next 2 gwks?

      2. Sczczczny will have to swapped before 33.

      3. You have a decent side out this week-why not save a transfer for two freebies next week?

Somehow managed to find myself in 496th this week. Only 42 points from top 50. Mental.
I would appreciate any advice to push me on..

    Foster (begovic)
    Luiz, Coleman, walker (Hughes, djourou)
    Nani, nasri, Adam, Vdv, Dempsey
    RVP, tevez (Saha)

4 mill in bank. 1 free transfer.
Want lamps in. Prob for Vdv/ demps.
Will swap Saha for welbeck/Carroll to free up cash.
Swap tevez for Rooney? Or wait and have 2 transfers next week?
    Any advice appreciated. Danke

Finding a captain this week is difficult as I have Rooney, Nani, Fabregas and RVP. Had it on RVP (not convinced that he'll start or play 60+ minutes) then Fabregas and just changed it to Nani now. I think I've gone for the safest choice looking at Nani's history, but would a gamble in Fabregas be a good idea do you think?

Fabregas is just not returning big points hauls at present to justify a place in my team let alone cap'n'cy.
Go with your gut-it's usually right: RVP.
