“Essential” is a big word in Fantasy Football. Invariably, the minute you go throwing it in the direction of player, circumstances twist to render such claims as pure folly. Having lauded Nani an indispensable member of any squad, Alex Ferguson opted to rest the season’s leading Fantasy points scorer in today’s 4-2 win at West Ham. To compound matters, Wayne Rooney emerged from his first-half shell to fire a superb hat-trick. It may just force a rethink.

Nani has, for so long, provided incredibly effective cover for United’s attacking returns. His 9 goals and 16 assists speak for themselves and looked to have locked him into our squads for the duration.

His importance has of course been boosted by an inconsistent Rooney. While Nani has contributed no less than 7 double figure returns in the Fantasy Premier League game, Rooney had mustered 4 in response before today. Five goals in his last 7 league starts had signposted today’s handsome haul, but with Nani firmly planted in our lineups, many Fantasy Managers will have been content to go into the gameweek without Rooney against a West Ham defence that had conceded just a single goal in their last three matches. Today’s events have changed all that.

Suddenly we will be fidgeting on Nani. Today’s decision to bench the Portuguese trickster was surely influenced by Wednesday’s Champions League date with Chelsea, but Antonio Valencia’s assured and effective return to the starting lineup is a worry. Ferguson is a huge fan of the former Wigan winger and his faith in him was rewarded by a showing that provided an assist and more crosses than any other player in the league today.

Park Ji-Sung is another player admired by Ferguson and his return to fitness, along with Ryan Giggs’ evergreen performance, highlights that the United boss now has the resources to shuffle and rest Nani at a whim.

Wayne Rooney’s points haul will inevitably raise his profile at a time when most Fantasy Managers either own or covet Robin Van Persie. With Frank Lampard and an Arsenal midfielder looking strong temptations ahead of gameweek 33 double fixtures, funds for Rooney look scarce.

The inclusion of both Nani and Rooney may also seem like overkill – United had scored 3 goals in 3 league games before today – do they warrant such heavy attacking investment with fixtures falling kindly for Chelsea and Arsenal?

Rooney will have to be considered – tinkering will be done and a route to acquire him will surely be planned by many. Plenty will be pondering the merits of Nani as a result. Unthinkable before today.

It highlights that we can take nothing for granted. Plans have to be fluid – as agile as Nani’s own twinkling feet. Ferguson and Rooney may have ripped up our established thinking and we have to be open to change. That much is “essential”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

tough year for spudnaldo but when the chips have been down he's produced that bicycle against man city and the free kick today. the nature of each goal was the equivalent to about 3 goals. had man utd got one back with a tap in today i don't think it would have been such a body blow to west ham. they were a mess after that free kick

It would mean ditching RVP or Roonpig, and with Utd. having their fixture back for GW33 that would be very hard to do.

Lampard in requires major team surgery I don't think I can do and I'm stuck.

None. Ancelotti said he was planning to rotate, but Lamps is rotation-proof. Too much risk around Drogs, Torres and Anelka, I reckon. Ramires maybe, but I think Lamps is worth the extra £££.

I'm only in it for the glamour these days.

Although there is rationale. I need a midfielder for 5.0 million or under to play in the next two weeks, Wilshere is perfect*.

*obviously ignoring the fact that he only has been involved in 3 Arsenal goals this season.

        I'm banking on baps galore.

The thing is, Nani is just as capable of getting a big score next week.

Last 2 weeks Rooney did nothing and he may well do nothing again for another 2 weeks now.

I wanted Rooney this week instead of Bent. Would have needed an 8 pt hit to have gotten him. In the end Bent's score justified my decision not to go down that route as I would have been no better off after the hit.

Haha nice number, 200th in the world, even with 3 captaincy fail in a row. Considering doing Kolarov to Luiz tonight as first of my freebies. No brainer right?

Sorry Lolarov but the time has come for us to see other people and don't take it personal.

Just look at Odemwingies scores over the last 10
    12, 2, 5, 2, 5, 2, 1, 4, 8, 10

For 5.0m he should get more interest.

The problem with him was that Woy benched him when he got the job and lot if us (me included), thought that he is bench material. And we got Zigic, oh my oh my, what a fail 4 point hit was that.

True a lot of people went Odem->Zigic for the double.

I did this with both Elmohammady and Coleman straight after they were dropped earlier in the season. 2 weeks later they were regulars again and knocking in the points.

He plays for WBA, unfortunately. Same problem for Demba Ba

He used to have loads, and he let people down consistently. Add to that the fact that he was dropped for a couple of games when Woy first came in.

People will only still have him in their sides because they will have had more urgent matters to attend to. No one actually wants him.

Besides, aren't WBA's fixtures rubbish for the foreseeable future?

Fpl have his form as 7.3, that's outrageous for somebody playing for survival

Looks like at least 50 teams out of 138 in trouble before hits in the Millionaire Club. Getting down to the business end. 🙂

What are the chances that either one of hughes, tevez or kolarov doesn't play?
