“Essential” is a big word in Fantasy Football. Invariably, the minute you go throwing it in the direction of player, circumstances twist to render such claims as pure folly. Having lauded Nani an indispensable member of any squad, Alex Ferguson opted to rest the season’s leading Fantasy points scorer in today’s 4-2 win at West Ham. To compound matters, Wayne Rooney emerged from his first-half shell to fire a superb hat-trick. It may just force a rethink.

Nani has, for so long, provided incredibly effective cover for United’s attacking returns. His 9 goals and 16 assists speak for themselves and looked to have locked him into our squads for the duration.

His importance has of course been boosted by an inconsistent Rooney. While Nani has contributed no less than 7 double figure returns in the Fantasy Premier League game, Rooney had mustered 4 in response before today. Five goals in his last 7 league starts had signposted today’s handsome haul, but with Nani firmly planted in our lineups, many Fantasy Managers will have been content to go into the gameweek without Rooney against a West Ham defence that had conceded just a single goal in their last three matches. Today’s events have changed all that.

Suddenly we will be fidgeting on Nani. Today’s decision to bench the Portuguese trickster was surely influenced by Wednesday’s Champions League date with Chelsea, but Antonio Valencia’s assured and effective return to the starting lineup is a worry. Ferguson is a huge fan of the former Wigan winger and his faith in him was rewarded by a showing that provided an assist and more crosses than any other player in the league today.

Park Ji-Sung is another player admired by Ferguson and his return to fitness, along with Ryan Giggs’ evergreen performance, highlights that the United boss now has the resources to shuffle and rest Nani at a whim.

Wayne Rooney’s points haul will inevitably raise his profile at a time when most Fantasy Managers either own or covet Robin Van Persie. With Frank Lampard and an Arsenal midfielder looking strong temptations ahead of gameweek 33 double fixtures, funds for Rooney look scarce.

The inclusion of both Nani and Rooney may also seem like overkill – United had scored 3 goals in 3 league games before today – do they warrant such heavy attacking investment with fixtures falling kindly for Chelsea and Arsenal?

Rooney will have to be considered – tinkering will be done and a route to acquire him will surely be planned by many. Plenty will be pondering the merits of Nani as a result. Unthinkable before today.

It highlights that we can take nothing for granted. Plans have to be fluid – as agile as Nani’s own twinkling feet. Ferguson and Rooney may have ripped up our established thinking and we have to be open to change. That much is “essential”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

hat munster from when they went down to 20-9. backed them all the way in from 8/1. pulled about 150 out of betfair. im very lucky, but i was so unlucky earlier- harlequiins + 4 the last on an accumulator, and they lost by 4, missed a penalty a metre under the bar...was devastating.

        back even now,

WAHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! DELIGHTED.!!won me money back too babe, so not down anything for the weekend !! ronan o gara is a true irish hero, a modern day legend, in the pantheon of micheal collins..

I find it hard to support Leinster because they're all D4's, especially for me coming from a rugby school.

So I didn't mind today, many relations in Munster too.

              When I say D4 I generalize a bit.

They all come from private rugby schools, and rugby seems to be an upper-class thing in Leinster.

I support them, a bit. But my interest in rugby has been dented in the last two years.

Have two free transfers this week. Which plan is better?

    a) Kolarov out, Luiz in.
    Meirelies out, Walcott in.
(With a view to getting Lampard for the double the week after.)

    b) Baines out, Luiz in.
    Meirelies out, Lampard in.

No, I'm absolutely shit. Only started two Easters ago, and last year I f*cked my knee on the second day so couldn't do any more!

              At Courchevel right now.

Good thing I already own Rooney, Lampard and RVP 😛

I could afford to get Nani back without having to sell any of those 3, but Nani looks like a rotation risk again. Will get VDV ahead of Nani now.

Once VDV gets back to fitness and with a good run in and DGW36, he'll be a good acquisition. Won't be getting him in before DGW33, as I'll be beefing up my Arse/Chels/Brum doubles before GW33. Just saying that I'm willing to go the rest of the season without Nani, especially now that he's a rotation risk.

Truth is that I don't know what I'm doing most the time. Getting used to this FPL malarky now, as this is my first season doing it. First half of the season, I was making stupid choices and taking too many hits. I didn't even know what the WC was for and balls it up by making only one transfer with it in GW1 *facepalm*. My mates rip the sh*t out of me after I told them what I did 😀

I am thinking of the following transfers this week (I have 2 freebies):

    Evatt > Luiz
    Yaya > Lamps
    Tevez > Welbeck

    Then next week:
    Barton > Adam

    Leaving 0.3m in the bank

    That would give me:

    Foster Begovic
    RJ Dawson Coleman Luiz Walker
    Lamps Nani Nasri Young Adam
    Rooney RVP Welbeck

Not sure whether to do the Luiz transfer now, before the price rise tonight or wait until later in the week after the CL games, or maybe get Adam in this week and take an 8 point hit. Any thoughts greatly appreciated! Thanks

Dawson does well with bps, he got one last week. Defensive points are random but normally if they are dished out to the smaller sides, they go to the same defenders everytime. See RJ, Huth, Cahill, Samba.

Probably going to ask this question many a time over the next week but do these transfers sound good?

Gw32: Tevez and Nolan -> Welbeck and Lamps
Gw33: Young and Kolarov -> Adam and Luiz
