“Essential” is a big word in Fantasy Football. Invariably, the minute you go throwing it in the direction of player, circumstances twist to render such claims as pure folly. Having lauded Nani an indispensable member of any squad, Alex Ferguson opted to rest the season’s leading Fantasy points scorer in today’s 4-2 win at West Ham. To compound matters, Wayne Rooney emerged from his first-half shell to fire a superb hat-trick. It may just force a rethink.

Nani has, for so long, provided incredibly effective cover for United’s attacking returns. His 9 goals and 16 assists speak for themselves and looked to have locked him into our squads for the duration.

His importance has of course been boosted by an inconsistent Rooney. While Nani has contributed no less than 7 double figure returns in the Fantasy Premier League game, Rooney had mustered 4 in response before today. Five goals in his last 7 league starts had signposted today’s handsome haul, but with Nani firmly planted in our lineups, many Fantasy Managers will have been content to go into the gameweek without Rooney against a West Ham defence that had conceded just a single goal in their last three matches. Today’s events have changed all that.

Suddenly we will be fidgeting on Nani. Today’s decision to bench the Portuguese trickster was surely influenced by Wednesday’s Champions League date with Chelsea, but Antonio Valencia’s assured and effective return to the starting lineup is a worry. Ferguson is a huge fan of the former Wigan winger and his faith in him was rewarded by a showing that provided an assist and more crosses than any other player in the league today.

Park Ji-Sung is another player admired by Ferguson and his return to fitness, along with Ryan Giggs’ evergreen performance, highlights that the United boss now has the resources to shuffle and rest Nani at a whim.

Wayne Rooney’s points haul will inevitably raise his profile at a time when most Fantasy Managers either own or covet Robin Van Persie. With Frank Lampard and an Arsenal midfielder looking strong temptations ahead of gameweek 33 double fixtures, funds for Rooney look scarce.

The inclusion of both Nani and Rooney may also seem like overkill – United had scored 3 goals in 3 league games before today – do they warrant such heavy attacking investment with fixtures falling kindly for Chelsea and Arsenal?

Rooney will have to be considered – tinkering will be done and a route to acquire him will surely be planned by many. Plenty will be pondering the merits of Nani as a result. Unthinkable before today.

It highlights that we can take nothing for granted. Plans have to be fluid – as agile as Nani’s own twinkling feet. Ferguson and Rooney may have ripped up our established thinking and we have to be open to change. That much is “essential”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Bit of help required! The Roon/Lamps dilemma:

    Foster (Beg)
    Kolarov, Luiz, RJ (Huth, Coleman)
    Nasri, Nani, Adam, Young, VdV
    RVP, Suarez, Zigic

    4.7 in bank.

    A. Nasri/Nani/Young to Lamps?
    B. Suarez to Roon? Then Coleman to 2nd Chelsea defender and no lamps.
    C. Any other ideas?

So I had a plan to take me until the end of the season. But I'm really reconsidering my options as the plan was to keep the Season keepers/essentials nani and vdv? Do you keep? Get rid? When you've got nani, vdv, lamps, Walcott, nasri, rvp, rooney and odem what do you do?
I was originally going to take a 4pt hit this coming gw and do
Tamas > luiz and odem > welbeck, do I re consider?

Yeah, risk of CL rotation as well with VDV I suppose. I'm going with

            Nani, Nasri, Lamps, VDV, Adam

West Brom are in a battle for Premier League survival.

I don't think Welbeck is now going to offer you anything Odemwingie is already going to give you, imo.

Only thing I'd do is Nasri to Adam and the Luiz transfer.

Right then. Are either Elokobi or Stearman totally first choice?

Made a right bollock this week, selling Rooney for a hit to finance Lampard for GW32 (he better repay me!). Need a £3.9M defender to do Barton -> Lampard. The weeks I'll probably need the defender - Wolves fit the bill. Sort of. So, definite first choice?

Well since i've backed Arsenal so much this season my fate has pretty much been tied with theirs.

I've completely bottled it over the last few weeks in other words. So frustrating that they've had so many opportunities to do something but just not.

Fair play to United i suppose - i don't think they've particularly played very well this season, but that has certainly been the difference - alot more fight when it counts.

This 'great football' label is also hugely exaggerated. The last few weeks I've watched their games I see the same predictable pattern emerging. Great flying starts to their games, lots of tempo and slick passing looking threatening, followed by a mid-phase where the ball pings between players with little cutting edge, followed by and end phase where desperation takes over with the introduction of the taller strikers.
The whole point of football is the finishing, it's the most beautiful part of the show.

Agree....great football in principal but my point is that wenger does need to change their play - perhaps get a quicker start in games via two strikers to threat the goal a little more and then play the "great" football when in front.

They didnt really cause too many problems today and should be putting games like that to bed.....

Its not a title race as the others dont seem to be taking part 🙁

It doesn't help at all that there is no stability up front. I don't care how good RVP is when he's playing, you can't build a team around a player who plays half your games, SAF eventually learnt that with Saha.

Totally agree they should start with Chamakh.

I think a bigger difference than fightng spirit is that ManU have more quality in the most important team parts. Arsenal might have a better midfield, but ManU have three great goalscorers versus Arsenal's one (who is more injured than fit) + a better defence and goalkeeper for sure. They can compensate losses in those sections easier.

As much as it hurts me, the title race is over and ManU earns the PL crown 🙁

See there is a plan B, a 4-4-2, but they would have to drop one of Song, Wilshere, Fabregas/Nasri. If I was Wenger, I would drop Song.

I agree with many of your guys points here but I also feel you're hanging yourself up on the formations on paper.

I'm opening a can of worms here but have a look at Rooney in the last few weeks, his role has not been different from those of the players of the 3 of Arsenal's 4231 but he's still providing a cutting edge. And also look at other teams with similar 4231 - Real Madrid for example - where Ronaldo is wide in the 3 but gets into the box at every possible occasion when there is a chance a ball might be crossed in to aid the striker.

My point here is that I think formations on paper might fool you into logical errors when it's more about the roles and ideas of the individual players. Nasri, Arshavin and Fabregas have all at parts of the season just not been up for it, so they have to share the blame with Wenger for not motivating/instructing them better.

        That is a good synopsis.
Everyone labels Arsenal bottlers or chokers, but most importantly they are simply not good enough overall. Even if the points were level now I would always fancy United to go on and win the league.

Pretty much flogging a dead horse talking about them not being good enough at the back - been the case for the past few years now, will be very telling to see what Wenger does in the summer imo.

Not sure i entirely agree with the great football comment above - when they are on it they are better than anyone in the PL imo, the problem is their inconsistency, sometimes they can't play at the level they aspire to which is where it all seems to go wrong, but absolutely nothing wrong with aspiring to it!

Regardless of any criticism that is rightly mounted against Arsenal i still think its admirable the way they go about things off the pitch, which is too often overlook imo.

I don't believe this bottlers and chokers think neither. You need quality as a team to play on this level (Top4) consistently over years. Of course there are one or two players who don't perform in important games and the manager has to sort this out. Wenger didn't do it with Almunia and cover injury prone players like RVP, Walcott,...

I think one quality striker, one CB and a decent GK would have been enough to win the title. I'm sure we'll sort that out neyt season (joking)

Almunia doesn't deserve 6 pts for his performance today.

Lehman will be in goal next week, Almunia is a disaster.

You are right to be concerned, Arsene.

They need to put Blackpool to the sword next week because the last 2 league performances have been wasteful to say the least. Maybe Fabs starting will help them.

        Foster - 7 points
        Odemwingie - 10 points
        Nani (c) - 2 points

        Schwarzer - ?
        RVP (c) - 4 points
        Nani - 1 point
        2 transfers made - -4 points

        Makes perfect sense to me.
