For those without Wayne Rooney owners, Saturday was a painful day (I bet you did better than me though). Hopefully there’s something on offer this Mothering Sunday, with two Premier League fixtures to close the gameweek out (good riddance).

The Dugout Discussion chatroom is open in time for Blackpool’s trip to Craven Cottage. The team sheets have been handed in and read like this…

Fulham XI: Schwarzer, Baird, Hughes, Hangeland, Salcido, Duff, Etuhu, Murphy, Dempsey, Zamora, Dembele

Blackpool XI: Kingson, Baptiste, Cathcart, Evatt, Crainey, Grandin, Adam, Vaughan, Ormerod, Beattie, Taylor-Fletcher

Fantasy favourites Charlie Adam and Clint Dempsey both feature as does Fulham striker Bobby Zamora. That’s his first league start since his injury back in gameweek three, and his presence relegates Andy Johnson to the bench. Other than that, Fulham line-up as expected.

As for the visitor’s, DJ Campbell competes his three-match suspension today, which allows Brett Ormerod to play alongside Gary Taylor-Fletcher and James Beattie up front.

On a more comical note, Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed has erected a statue of Michael Jackson outside Craven Cottage. No, really.

That monstrosity aside, and it’s perhaps the final game of the day at Eastlands that has our interest, as Man City play hosts to Sunderland. Will Carlos Tevez’s owners be rewarded for holding on? I hope so.

      Surely not again!

Wouldn't put it past him though, dropped at about 70% meaning I had to take a hit to get RVP in.

Hey guys I'm new here just discovered the blog. I'm a huge fantasy addict and am thrilled to finally find a proper place to discuss it all!

I had a bad week this week, left nolan and merleiles on the bench and had adam nani and vidic gain me a total of 2 and RVP captain let me down. Ended up with 43 I'm gutted about the Kolarov decision, cost me a h2h. I've been consistently top 1000 all season (fell to 659 this week), and want to try and stay there til the end of the season, but my midfield has been letting me down recently.

    My team is:
    Foster, Begovic
    Vidic, Hangeland, Kolarov, Clichy, Luiz
    Adam, Mereiles, Nolan, VDV, Nani
    Beckford, RVP, Tevez

Beckford I got in for the double everton gameweek and was going to give him the boot but reckon with Saha injured he'll get a good run and will be a useful squad player. Adam I've had since week 1 (bar transfering out for suspension gameweeks, he's been my real triumph this season) and is the only midfield player currently totally safe. I'm fairly happy with my defence and keepers and don't want to jump on the Rooney bandwagon so reckon I'll keep my stirkers and do without Tevez week after next.

My real problem is midfield. Not been happy with mereiles or nolan for a while but 5 and 8 have got me thinking. VDV is off the pace atm but worry that he'll find form again at a moments noticem, and nani I'm unsure with him being selected now and cant afford him putting in 1 pointers. I was thinking of maybe getting Hitzlspurger as I reckon he'll get some points in and is cheap, to help increase my kitty incase i need it (I have 1.9 spare atm).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Gnu. You make a good point but I'm really fretting over this midfield really dont want to fall out of the top 1000 after spending so much time and effort staying there.

Just for the record I still have nightmares about gameweek 23 when I left the 28 points of odemwinge, distin and vidic on the bench, so I am still prone to some shockers :p

Ye good point about nani, and considering I bought him back right at the start of the season for around 8 I would be taking a big value hit selling him now. VDV does worry me doesn't seem to be recovered from his injury, might wait to see how he does vs madrid before deciding.

Cheers, missed the nolan suspension, glad you pointed that out, although he was probably first in my firing line if I'm totally honest anyway.

Hmm his fixtures do look tough but considering West Ham's performance vs spurs I reckon they can get a result in one of the tougher games and they have a nice final 3 or 4 games.

Nolan should go, excellent mid, and Vidic needs to go for some cash (hard to release a steady,"old timer" but too expensive -- then just get a better midfielder hope for some luck . Cahill could be your secret weapon soon. You've done well,

Ye Nolan is a gonner for me now. Never really felt too comfortable bringing him in to be honest, was one of those plyaers who I always maintained will get you 2 or 3 one week then nothing for 5 or 6. I eventually capitulated a few weeks back and wish I hadn't.

Not sure I could face losing Vidic, he's been a firm favourite for years (I'll always remember when he got me 50 odd as a DGW captain last season) and he'll alwyas get you points. I'll keep it in mind though.

Cahill is a nice thought, he did brilliantly for me towards the end of last year bringing me in points regularly. I then got him straight back after the Asia cup and he punished me with next to no points, and he's done little since. Would be a big risk, I might rely on beckford for my everton goals.

          Cheers.

      Wilkommen.

I can't argue with Hitzlsperger - owner and fan. Walcott may be worth considering too in that [kind of] ballpark as he's about to face Blackpool and then have a double so as long as he plays (fingers crossed) could be golden.

I still remember Hitz from his villa days, classy player. He tempts me a lot, but you make a great case for Walcott, although he has yet to convince me he'll hit his early season form again yet. Plus RVP has frustrated me enough the last few weeks not sure I could cope with two Arsenal players the form they're in.

Might go for Hitz to free up some funds to go for a big chelsea name for their double the next gameweek although ive tried to stay away from chelsea players (bar one defender, Cole and then Luiz) since they dropped in form and its served me pretty well so far.

Your team is far too defense heavy and you don't even have Baines.

You may struggle to stay top 1000 unless you start downgrading in defense and get some money to spend on Chelsea attackers.

I've always been a big believer in my money going on defense and forwards predominantly, it's the way I like to play it. For me a strong set of defenders can get you regular sixes and those who get you goals and assists can be very valuable. Vidic may be a bit expensive, but I have a lot of belief in him, and I don't believe any of the other players are too extravagant in terms of price.

Midfielders at any price level I've always found to be inconsistent so try and stay mid level which will give me some solid point scorers without bursting the bank. The midprice players can do as good a job for you as some of the high price ones can and if they don't perform they haven't been a huge drain on resources.

Any midfielder on his day will get you a nice haul. I'm not at all a fan of the high priced midfielders and apart from Ronaldo can't think of many times I've had a player over 10million in my midfield for a long period of time in the 5 years I've been playing now.

For me a player like Nani or VDV is by far more attractive than a Lampard, Fabregas or Gerrard who have all ultimately been let downs this season really. I often keep my midfield changing to keep up with form also, so while my defenders and forwards are fairly constant, so more suited to higher price players, I can keep chopping and changing mid priced midfielders for whoever is on form.

Futhermore I'm not keen on Chelsea this season, too many under-performing big players, too much rotation and uncertainty, and they are focused solely on Europe now so may let the league suffer.

You write and reason well, but I feel like your strategy is flawed. The fact that there are always 3 players you've got to bench will hurt you over the season when you've got value sitting there and when you make poor decisions, which you are bound to do. Getting higher priced players with proven FPL pedigree not only gets you consistency, but more captaincy options. It's worth splashing out on a few higher end players imo just for that.

As a result, I feel like you're making a big mistake not getting Lampard, but admittedly, it doesn't agree with your style of playing FPL, and it's worked quite well for you apparently, so who am I to judge?

One other thing I like to consider is that if I have say 3 good defenders and two weak defenders, then it can often lead to some bad situations. Say my three top defenders all play teams in the top half away one week, and my lower defenders have average fixtures, I've pretty much conceded all defensive points that week, since it is unlikely that more than one, if any, will yield 6 points since my lower defenders will not be scoring good points regularly to compensate in for those tough fixtures the others have.

If I have 5 top defenders it is significantly unlikely that all 5 will have hard fixtures, and it gives me greater scope to chop and choose depending on who has good fixtures. Add to that fact that defenders who cost more usually get you goals and assists, and goals are such a big point scorer for defenders, it is an invaluable bonus to your total they can provide.

Considering that a high value defender is effectively worth a low to mid value midfielder, you get value for money in your defense by buying strongly across and keeping defensive scoring consistency, I wouldn't feel comfortable letting an area with 5 players in my team picking up less points and leaving all the onus on midfield and forwards.

I think we've all experienced weeks where you've bench the wrong players and you've lost points, but that will happen at whatever level with whoever you choose. But for me having a strong bench is beneficial in the long run as for one it allows the defensive changes week by week I mentioned before but also gives lots of scope for bans/injuries/empty GWs etc.

I don't normally have captaincy issues either, I normally have either one or two high priced forwards (RVP and Tevez atm) who are able to have it as well as some high scoring midfielders. Also I like to be a bit adventurous, Adam captain two weeks ago vs Blackburn was the saver of my week, and I often have captained Nani, VDV, Cahill when he was on form, same for Bale etc, and usually get results.

I appreciate your input a lot, it's nice to have some really indepth discussions about my approach and its made me think seriously about how I play the game. I can see why people may want to bring Lamps in but as you said it really doesn't suit how I play it, and I've bought Walcott now who I'll feel much more comfortable with in my team.

9.0 seems pricey for Arshavin. I'd look to lose Arsh, Barton and Berba for Lamps, a cheap forward like Welbeck or SEB, and maybe Walcott if you can afford it.

Might have to re-think my 4 plan!!

Very hard to afford lampard without making lots of transfers. Id need to do 2 transfers just to get one man in.

Me too. Sold RVP for Zig and had to buy him back for the last couple of GWs at the sodding same 10.4 price which I thought would plummet after Arsen said he would be out for three week or so.

In the meanwhile RVP was protected so didn't fall in price at all, whilst Zig contributed the sum total of sod all to the DGW.

Beckford hasn't done me a lot of favours either. ðŸ™

still deciding. you take away penalties and lamps' post injury scores have been: 1,3,2,3,3,7,2,3,4,13,3,2.
before someone says yes but penalties still count, my issue here is imo pens should make a good scorer even better. you think of lampard second half of last season and his penalties were making his already amazing scoring ludicrous. no i'm not saying he can't score from open play anymore, just when he only does it once against blackpool in 12 games, plus average position maps show he's deeper than ramires these days talk of him beign essential baffles me.
basically want to see more than a reputation as a reason to shell out 12.9 for the double. only 1 match left to see that improvement

i'd keep berbatov (eek) and give him one more game. they should play 2 up front at home so if i had him would be tempted to give him 1 last hurrah and hope it's his name next to rooney's, not chicharito's. it would be classc berbatov this season if he got a 13 pointer against fulham. if not for 9.8? i agree with the watchlist and the likes of bent, gyan and suarez (in that order)

i guess you would have to get rid of nasri to fund drogba but i wouldn't sell nasri the week he goes to blackpool. did like the look of drogba though, 2 woodwork hits away from a hattrick. see how he does against man utd in midweek. if he looks like he's back to wigan-slapping form then i guess go for it and just hope berbatov is benched again

Really not feeling the clamour for Lamps. He's been substandard all season and is past his best now IMO. He's been average for a long time this year in an oft misfiring Chelsea team and don't see how one pnealty and 2 goals vs Blackpool (who my granny could probably nick a goal against) suddenly constitues a worthwhile signing. at 12.9 it's little more than daylight robbery IMO.

Not forgetting Wigan will not be the pushovers many expect (they often seem to get one result vs chelsea a season and are desperately fighting for points at the bottom), West Brom haven't lost for a while and are very well drilled under Hodgson now, while Brum will probably park the bus and hope for a point.

I'm certainly not wasting my cash on him, I'll be looking elsewhere for the DGW because hopefully I'll be laughing while the rest of you fall flat on your face with your Lampard(c)8pts.

Watch him go and score 3 hatricks in the next three weeks now!

I'm pondering Essien or possibly Ramirez for my Chelski Wig(h) + DGW coverage(have Liuz already).I agree that Lamps is not value and not worth the disruption to shoe horn him in but there's plenty of time for that idea to change.

Essien has sat too deep for me this season for an option at his price, Ramirez is subject to a bit of rotation and wouldn't trust either of them in my team right now. Also let's not forget fat Frank could end up being rested with the massive champs league games which Chelsea are so patently focusing on. I'm tempted to just stick with my policy of avoiding all chelsea midfielders and forwards I've kept since around GW10 which has served me so well.

Might just go for Walcott for the DGW.

Ashavin has never enticed me once, too much cost for a player you have no idea what he'll produce. Fab too expensive IMO for what he gives, especially when he's being benched vs Blackburn depite no midweek game = madness. Nasri will go down as a half season wonder I think while looking down Wilshere's points tallies for the whole season hardly inspires confidence.

I'm thinking now Walcott for Nolan this week for the DGW and Bpool, didn't realised until I just checked he was only 6.9 seems a steal.

Berba is a tough one, he's a very streaky player. I've done well with him this year getting him in and taking him out almost at the perfect times, but right now I can't call him. He's due another run and can't see him starting the cup games so might get a go out in the league and they have some nice fixtures coming up. It's a blind stab in the dark with him I'm afriad. The other thing to keep in mind is if you make Berba for Drog you lose the chance to sub someone else in and out for the DGW

        Set pieces.

Chelsea are scoring most of their goals from set pieces, and Lampard is on all of them, not to mention penalty duty. For the fact he'll also start every game, he's worth the price considering Chelsea's fixtures.

Who else would you get and where would you spend your funds if you didn't get him?

Still can't see him scoring significantly in the next couple of weeks, especially with he champions league coming up where the focus will be, and he may well be rested for one of the games in the DGW especially after playing for England last week too.

I'm going to go for Walcott in my midfield this week and then won't have more than around 9 million to buy a midfielder.

Personally I'm leaning more and more towards getting Walcott in this week, keeping Baines, and saving the Lampard transfer to be done the week after.

Lampard's current stats (admittedly I haven't looked at his stats from the Stoke game), I warn you, are extremely impressive, and well above the average that he's been getting for the season. Getting in the shots and key passes very regularly - and with the set pieces as others have mentioned - he is garunteed to be involved in goalmouth action over those fixtures.

I disagree Lamps is on all set pieces; he lost all FK to Drog, and is on half of the corners (Malouda and even Drog getting the rest).

I'm looking at bringing Drogba back in too.

Can't afford him without a 4 point hit though, and although I want to get rid of Coleman then I can't identify a defender who is nailed on for a DGW soon and costs less than him.

I could always sell Rooney or RVP for Drogba though.

Will have to see how things pan out after the CL games this week, I think.

I am only a first year player and four thousand miles away, but I'd say SEB, .......Welbeck is great, but I was surprised how adrift Sunderland was today and some stats about being 20th of all 20 teams in points over the past six matches plus a goal drought.

SEB has a DGW, that alone would be reason enuf for me.

I have a keeper question. I currently have VDS and Foster and have planned my transfers to get a new keeper this week or next...your thoughts please:
    (1) VDS to Cech (Cech & Luiz for DGW and beyond) Problem with this is that Foster has a DGW on the same week. Seems a waste to bench one of them.
    (2) Play Foster for DGW and do VDS to Begovic for his DGW in 34.
    (3) VDS to Mignolet.

Thanks guys, this one's buggung me.

Would do 2 unless you desperately need the cash, in which case do 3, but consider Gomes too..

or Hennessey if you're feeling crazy..

Yes, option 2 is clearly the best, then roll on with Gomes/Hart in GW36- I think that's a clever alternative to the misery a midfielder might bring the rest of us.

Wouldn't go for Mignolet personally, made the same mistake earlier in the season and he got shafted for Gordon after a couple of weeks. Bruce doesn't really seem to know his number one and could be prone to change with the bad form they're in. I'd go for number 2, Begovic and Foster have served me brilliantly for about half of the season now.

    My GW33 (DGW) team
    Howard
    Luiz, A.Cole, Ridgewell
    Adam, Lampard, Young, Nasri, Nani
    Gyan, RVP

    Subs: Mignolet, Carroll, Walker, Simpson

To do that all I need is to do Szezzers out for Mignolet & Kolarov out for Luiz this week. Then VDV out for Adam and Coleman out for A.Cole.
That's the final battleplan, desperate times call for a little mentalness.
Now if any of those buggers gets bloody injured or has unexpected price changes/suspensions I will cry bitter tears. That is a beautiful team.

A bit concerned you don't have Rooney but two cheap strikers.
Would start by downgrading Kolarov and Baines to Walker and Bardsley who have good fixtures till the end of the season.
VDV to Adam is another fund raiser worth some consideration.

Baines for either defender this week; Fabregas for Lampard the following week.

Yeah, I'm now also concerned that I don't have Rooney! Problem with my 2 other strikers is that Welbeck now has a decent run of fixtures and Zigic has a double in GW33. Was thinking about either:

        a) Kolarov & Zigic -> Walker & Hernandez
        b) Kolarov -> Dawson
        c) Coleman -> Walker

Which you think is best of these?

I'd like to keep Baines & VDV due to set pieces, fixtures, form etc. Nasri -> Adam in GW34 is probable.

So another gameweek passed and it's time to make new plans...

I suppose we agree that to fund Lampard move, it's better to get rid of torres than rooney?
In comes prob welbeck or even ebanks-blake

    Gw 33 is where the problem is, all help/opinnions appreciated;
    a) coleman/walker, ferguson and rooney + save transfer
    b) terry, ferguson and rooney (allready have luiz)
    c) coleman/walker, wallcot and rooney
    d) coleman/walker, ferguson and drogman

    Annoying factors;
a)ferguson never gets double figures, even on double gw
b doubling in che defence - one goal conceded and there's not that much to get (prob will have to take a point hit later..)
    c) again, have to get 4 points more than ferguson to make it right
    d) changing torres to drog, takes two transfers and still might get in rotation mess..

    cheers
