Wayne Rooney is facing a two-match ban having been charged with โ€œthe use of offensive, insulting and / or abusive languageโ€ by the FA.

The United striker was caught using โ€œcolourfulโ€ terms following his penalty conversion which gave his side a 3-2 lead at Upton Park on Saturday. Rooney later submitted an apology for the incident but it became clear early on that the FA were to investigate the matter further.

The FA issued their verdict at 5pm today, with a two-match ban for Rooney now looming. He would miss Saturdayโ€™s gameweek 32 fixture with Fulham and the FA Cup semi-final with Man City on April 16 โ€“ a massive blow to Unitedโ€™s ambitions this season.

This is also hugely significant news for Fantasy Managers of course โ€“ Rooney put himself to the forefront of our plans with Saturdayโ€™s hat-trick and almost 20,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have already made the move for the 12.0 capture of the striker.

United and Rooney have until 6pm on Wednesday to deny the FAโ€™s charge. If itโ€™s accepted then the suspension will come into effect. Given the evidence captured by Skyโ€™s cameras and Rooney’s apology, itโ€™s going to be difficult for United to find a case to contest the matter; their official site has confirmed the charge but no comment from the club has been made as yet.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ludicrous decision by the FA. Fortunately, I'm not deaf but I can lip-read and the amount of f**k offs that get screamed at refs, every match day when decisions go against players is the more important agenda. I do appreciate there is a new initiative to be implemented next season to deal with abuse, ganging up on refs etc., but the decision today just leaves me scratching my head. I'm sure lots of players in the heat of a goal scoring moment get verbally excited but I guess they'll now be checking for microphones. Rooney's ban is, quite frankly, ridiculous.

This is coming from a Chelski by the way.

if rooney did exactly what he did 5 metre to the left i'd defend him, but he chose to do it straight down the camera on purpose. as a split second decision i'm sure he didn't contemplate the potential knock-on effects of his choice so it's unfortunate in that respect but what he did was foolish and pretty unique. by swearing stragith down the camera he was willingly allowing millions to hear those words, if you were watching you would have seen and heard it, it's not like other times when the ball goes out of play and you just about pick up a swear word. managers that are swearing on the touchline (not saying that's right either) are at risk of being heards by the couple of hundred people behind them that are close enough to hear what is being said. a couple of hundred v millions is no contest. if a camera picks up a manager or player swearing in the background they are oblivious to it happening, if someone said, "oh by the way player x what you are about to say is going to be picked up by a camera" then they wouldn't say it. rooney chose to, he may not have fully thought it through in the heat of the moment, but he still chose to.

I think the point has been made on here several times already.

We know cameras zone in on players cursing after a debatable decision or a bad shot. Nobody, not even the FA denies that.

But there is a significant difference between that, where a player is unaware that a camera may have zoned in on him and deliberately seeking out a camera and a boom mic in an early afternoon game, being broadcast around the world, and blasting out several profanities into it.

The deliberate intention to actually seek out the mic and direct foul language at it is what makes the difference here.

This news is absolutely the best thing ever!!

Those that think it's silly just because this kind of language is used all the time at football are completely missing the point that he said it right into the camera - it's a huge distinction and to be honest a pretty silly point to make. Also he can hardly feel hard done by given the elbow incident.

That said i think it's daft - he apologised which imo should have been the end of it.

one thing i don't like is that professional footballers have to be role models. they don't imo they're there to be professional footballers, not professional people. really don't care what rooney or terry are like, i appreciate their football skills. if england won the world cup with the starting XI of 3 rapists, 2 coke dealers, 2 shoplifters, 2 fascist dictators and 2 car thieves i would celebrate as if any other side i supported won.

Who has said that though? Just that muppet journo that all the united fans absolutely love now.

That's not the point - he's a professional so should act like one. I don't want what i'm saying to get twisted because it's something which has already been blown way out of proportion - as above i think an apology should have been the end of it.

But similarly its not as if its a complete non issue - he shouldn't have done it and not for the reason that children might be influenced because of it.

He did apologise. I'm very suprised at the ban, I'd have though the admonishment would be enough for him not to do it again.
I think the ban will be reduced to one game, the Fulham one. United can cope without him but it's annoying for me as a Rooney owner.

the elbow was bad but they let him away with it. had they not done something with this, then it would have been alleged from SALL cornbers that Rooney could do what he wanted and was bigger than the league.

simple as that really, they had no choice.

I'd be the first to jump on Rooney if i thought he deserved it but he really doesn't imo. And the elbow was filth but is really done and dusted now - except to shoot down anyone who things Rooney has been hard done by with this incident.

yeah but you cant seriously think the ban and the two incidents arent related. If rooney hadnt been on the radar already after tht elbow, nothing would have been done.

Im delighted it happened, cos he deserved it after the elblow.

and theres also the argument that the effect on rooney's own mentality of the FA ignoring his elbow, let to the mindset of him deciding
/subconciously allowing himself, to say f*ck you to the people that pay his wages.

i wasnt offended, at all. But he's an awful dope, he'd jsut scored a goal for chirst sake, and the tv camera wasnt slagging him.

Thats what i meant - he apologised and that should have been the end of it. A ban is ridiculous, i think a fine would have been too much.

But i don't know why people keep banging on about role-models and children as if that is the only reason he shouldn't have done it.

He shouldn't have done it, but it's really a complete non-issue - hence me thinking the apology should have sufficed.

Many will probably say i don't know what I'm talking about, but this kind of stupidity is why i hate it when Rooney is considered to be one of the greats.

This kind of behaviour and attitude is unnecessary and just has him subsequent to a ban. And for what? Looking like a prat on TV as far as i am concerned.

Until he gets it in check (something that i'm sure he has been told before) he will never be a great player for me. Jack Wilshere has an attitude too, am I wrong to miss players like Gary Lineker?

Yeah I know. Didn't mean to sound ignorant, but I think you need to win bigger trophies.

That's not disrespecting players who play for 'weaker' teams all their career, I love that, but they're rarely considered 'greats' when their careers are summed up.

To be honest that distinction I and many others make is massively unfair to players who are born in countries with no chance to win the World Cup.

There are a handful of players I consider all time greats who've not done anything on the international stage but they're not many.

                Perhaps.

There's still time to reach legendary status, and also time to lose out of the 'United great' status too. I think.

Great players are judged by their footballing prowess on the pitch not by their suitability to be considered role models.

Maradona was a nut-case on and off the pitch. Case in point...

    Bit of a muddle here

    My Team looks like this

    Scezza Bego

    Walker, Luiz, Kelly, RJohnson, Coleman

    Bale, Mereiles, Lamps, A.Young, Nani

    RVP, Tevez, Zigic

    Bank 0.1

Need to ship a midfielder to get a better keeper other than Mingolet (pref Foster) also keen to bring in some more DGW players.

Don't want to take hits so will transfer a mid this week and then address the keeper.

I always remeber Chill Pill for one reason.
Last year in the last game of the season I came on here and said I was thinking about bringing in Anelka and captaining him at the same time (against Wigan)
A few people were either joking or being diplomatic about that not being the best move.
Not him - told me I was this and that and being quite unpleasant.

Anyway, 22 pts later that day........

I am a Rooney owner, but think that the ban is appropriate. After the FA's "respect" pronouncement, there is no way that they can let Rooney's conduct go unpunished. It would call their credibility into serious question.

At long last the FA have done something right and punished that Rooney guy. He was getting too big for his shorts anyway. Elbowing a player and getting away with it. Swearing at the cam after scoring! Unless people want this to be common place then the penalty should be a 4 match ban not two. He's one of the best players in recent times but he needs more discipline and decency.
    Well done FA!:-)

I can't quite believe this stuff about plastic Man Utd fans etc. People can do what they like, legally, with their leisure time. There is no 'morality' in supporting a team or liking to watch a team from another part of the world. It's like the whole charade about people who like Aphex Twin, for example, looking down snootily on fans of Glee, and saying they don't know anything about real music. Grow up people. You don't deserve respect just because you come from Manchester and support City. It's nurses, teachers etc who deserve respect.

Ha! Yeah, well, I had to put something in that box. I don't watch football anymore, really. If you start following a team on the telly when you're 7 or 8, you can never quite get it out of your system. It's like Star Wars or The A-Team. But I never said 'we' when talking about Man U. At least not since I was 9... ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Yes and no.

If people want to listen to glee over aphex that's fine - but to me that seems to imply they listen to music on a very different level to me. Not so much that i would look down on them, i just don't know if i could click with them.

With the plastic fans thing, you can be a united fan and support them with good reason, fine. But undeniably some people do support teams like that solely because they win lots - and i'm not saying that people can't do that, they can do what they want. At the same time if that is your outlook on it, i don't expect you'd understand the outlook of people that support lower league teams etc.

Basically worse, no - different, yes.

I totally understand why people can get snooty about those kind of things tbh. The foolish point would be to think that just because someone supports united they are a plastic fan, but undeniably such fans exist.

Well, I'm just agreeing with a fellow traveller. It's not like I'm going up to an Ocean Colour Scene fan and saying 'How Uncool are you'? I do believe that Bach represents the pinnacle of music, but also believe that anyone else has the right to derive pleasure from whatever music they like in their free time, without the musical equivalent of Chill Pill popping up laden with vitriol.

          Different dimensions.

Electronic music opens up a whole world of sonic possibilities that just isn't possible with instruments.

But there is a very legitimate point in there somewhere, I went to watch an orchestra at the weekend and it was another level - the biggest problem for me is identifying what i actually like, there is so much out there. I'd much rather listen to the stuff that tugs on the old heartstrings a bit more, Hans Zimmer style.

But then you don't get classical music that really kicks on a level lots of current electronic music/bands can.

All about different music for different moods imo.

I would definitely look down on any man that preferred Glee to Aphex Twin. Just like I would look down on them if they watched Big Brother, X Factor etc.

No lucky shinner this time around..

    Rooney->Hernandez
    Dempsey>Lampard

    For a 4 pt. hit

    Giving me
    Nani/Lampard(c)/Nasri/VDV (Adam)
    Suarez/Hernandez/Suarez

    Good move?

          Mihir,
Maybe I should try Rooney->Drogba instead.

          No hit.

I'm in a similar situation. Think I'm gonna invest elsewhere (see above) due to Ancelotti's rotation.

Think I might be doing Rooney, Bentley, Coleman -> Lampard, Wellbeck, Cashley for a 4pt hit.

Anyone defending Rooney now need their head examined. Rooney deserved what he got no matter how excellent a player he is. A lot of young kids look up to him, at least they know now not to follow his shameful ways too.
