Spot the Differential

We’re on a bit of a roll recently with last weekend’s matches gave us another high scoring result for the “Differentials”, with Bobby Zamora, Adam Johnson and Jermaine Beckford all getting the ball in the net (well, over the line at least). We’ll be looking to keep that momemtum rolling for as long as possible as we go rummaging in the bargain bin once again….

Antonio Valencia

Perhaps not such an unknown as some of the others to make the Differentials, Valencia is nonetheless owned by a paltry 2.2% of all FPL managers and can be picked up for just 7.8m, making him a decent alternative to Nani, the game’s most popular player with 44% ownership.

While Nani owners will have been aggrieved to see him come on for just 4 minutes against West Ham, Valencia has now played the full 90 in each of the last two games and has surely proven his fitness enough to merit inclusion as a fantasy option. With Ryan Giggs and Ji-sung Park also fit and able to play on the wing, rotation is a concern but Valencia is a big favourite of Alex Ferguson’s and the right flank spot looks his to lose right now.

United play host to Fulham on Saturday, and Valencia is expected to start on the right flank with Nani again shifting across to the left. The ex-Wigan winger offers less of a direct threat on goal than Nani, but his pace and crossing ability will surely see him rack up the assists and possibly Bonus Points to compensate.

Junior Hoilett

Hoilett makes the picks for the third time this season, and I’m going to keep banging that drum till everyone knows just how good the young Canadian is as a Fantasy prospect. The first two times he was picked, he hit nine and eight points respectively so with a home tie against fellow relegation strugglers Birmingham up next, I’m going for the hat-trick; at just 4.0m and an almost guaranteed starter, he has got to be one of the best value players around.

Steve Kean likes to mix up his formation depending on their opponents, mirroring Blackpool’s 4-3-3 and Fulham’s 4-4-2, while opting for a 4-1-4-1 against Arsenal. As a result, Hoilett often sees himself moved out onto the flank, but don’t let that put you off; his energy and pace means he gets into plenty of dangerous positions wherever he plays.

A look over the OPTA stats (where Hoilett is classed as a midfielder) certainly backs up his consistent FPL returns. Over the last three games he has supplied seven key passes (assist attempts), made 14 successful dribbles and scored his two goals from a total of eight attempts on goal. Impressive stuff.

Daniel Sturridge

Another one to have made the “Differentials” previously on the tail end of his 4 match ‘goal a game’ streak, Daniel Sturridge looks too good to ignore this week, as Bolton face off against West Ham at the Reebok. He could have had at least a couple last weekend, were it not for the heroics of Birmingham stopper Ben Foster and Robert Green will likely need to be on his game to keep the Chelsea loanee at bay.

Since arriving in the January transfer window, Sturridge has become an essential part of the Bolton attack, and as former Fantasy favourite Johan Elmander has been moved out to the wing to accommodate him, he looks almost rotation proof. At 5.3m then, he looks a fantastic value pick and the 3.4% of FPL managers that have him in their teams will be hoping for a high scoring game against the Hammers.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake

Veterans of these comments boards will remember the hysterical pre-season hype surrounding Ebanks-Blake before he began his first season in the Premier League. He ended up delivery a disappointing anti-climax, the likes of which only Mauro Boselli and Graham Dorrans have come close to matching since. Despite scoring 25 goals in the 2008/9 season and winning the Championship’s player of the season award, his first season in the Premier League was a disaster; unable to hold down a regular place in the side after picking up several niggling injuries, he scored just once all year and was eventually relegated to the bench in favour of Kevin Doyle.

The ex-United youth striker has mostly been used as a bit part player this season, but even so, it has been a huge improvement with seven goals to his name so far. The long term absence of main striker Kevin Doyle means he will almost certainly be Wolves’ first choice striker until the end of the season, and he will be desperate to prove his worth. At 4.9m and with ownership of just 0.7%, Ebanks-Blake looks like a great option as a third striker, as long as you are happy benching him for next week’s missing fixture.

Best of the Rest

Danny Wilson looks set to start again for Liverpool this weekend, and is good value at just 4.2m. He would have been a shoe in for the picks if they had an easier fixture, and is definitely one to keep an eye on. At the other end of the pitch, Dirk Kuyt deserves an honourable mention after scoring 4 goals in his last three games and has a good chance of notching again this weekend with City’s defence still vulnerable. Finally Salomon Kalou is an option we’ve presented several times this week – classed as a midfielder in the Fantasy Premeir League game, he could well start up front for Chelsea against Wigan, a scenario that screams potential for those willing to take a punt.

Simple question, do you think Wellbeck or Sturridge will score 4 or more points than Kolarov in this gameweek?

I'm doing Cahill->Lampard this week but I need to chop 2.1 points off my team in order to fund the move. I think I'm trading Rooney out but I'm not too sure who to get in return. Tempted to go for Berba or Hernandez against Fulham at home but I'm not sure if it's a great mid-term prospect. Bent seems tempting and Gyan looks okay. Agbonlahor seems like a differential.

    Thoughts?

I got the same problem with Rooney but as I dont have Van Persie yet thinking he might be a must have. But I've got Arshavin!!
I've also got Young so worried about doubling up with Bent. In the past Tevez would have seen the obvious choice, but hes not to good at mo and ive got Silver.
Gyan could be the one especially with good run of fixtures but will he get goals from a poor form Sunderland!

    Foster
    Bardsley, Walker, Luiz
Adam, Lamps (c), Nani, Downing, Nasri
    RVP, Berbs

    Bench: Al-Habsi, Zigic, Coleman, Huth

Hey all, help please with transfers! Have:
    Foster (Begovic)
    Evra Huth Walker Simpson (Jara)
    A.Young, VDV, Nani, Nasri, Barton
    RVP (C?) (Rooney, Zigic)

    Thinking (2 free):
    a) Evra -> Luiz, Rooney -> Bent?
    b) Evra -> Luiz, Rooney -> Bent, A.Young/VDV -> Lamps (4 point)
    c) Evra -> Luiz, save 1 free for next GW.

    Thoughts/advice much appreciated!

Luiz should outscore Evra over the next two GW's given the extra fixture and the opponents. That looks a decent move. Rooney to bent will obviously give you an advantage today but you may want Rooney back soonafter - depending on your mini-league differentials. Have you thought about tidying your back four? Not sure what cash you have but Jara > Jones or Bardsley looks good.

Yeah i have a 20point lead over my opponent so figured points in the bag may be the way forward. Just seen a nice little differential tho...rooney and nani for lamps and bent.

Again need a week of two to assess nani who has been dodgy of late. and would be wanting to put rooney back in again.

Possibly the most sensible option would be terry for baines or as u say...NONE at all

Kolarov is the obvious candidate to change given a tough fixture this week and a blank next. With Luiz in place however, there's not a change open to you that appears to offer strong possibilities of an instant return - Samba and Gary Cahill would be gambles. Would opting for Walker in for Kolarov offer funds that would offer a decent upgrade on Barton?

Berbatov looks good for today...but you really need to sell him...so I would get a cheap striker such as Sturridge (who has a double coming up) and use the funds for Luiz and Lampard (who have a double and good ongoing fixtures) if you have enough cash. It looks likely that Nani (who should play today) will be rotated from now on so he might be your midfield candidate for the chop.

If it was me I would wait until next week and take a 4-point hit.

Blimey...I can't see an easy way out of that. It's a toss up between Adam vs Welbeck. Personally, I'd go Welbeck for two reasons - 1) Far more managers have Adam 2) Adam will likely need a spot-kick or a Blackpool result to get points - can't see him earning Bonus in an Arsenal win.

What's more likely - a Welbeck goal or an Adam Penalty - tough choice. If Welbeck scores or assists though, Bonus looks very likely. That's not necessarily the case with Adam as Arsenal look likely victors regardless of conceding. Both Sunderland and Blackpool take poor form into the GW so there's no help there either. Don't envy you.

    5.8m in the bank

was thinking of lamps but would need to dump 1 of Young - Nasri - VDV - Nani, all have decent fixtures.

    A B or C?

Rooney and Adam > Lampard and Sturidge

Rooney and VDV > Lampard and Anelka

Rooney and VDV > Lampard and Hernandez?

I have a real bad feeling about dropping VDV - i know he's not in form but the guy is class, could come good at any moment!

Start Coleman - Hoilett or Welbeck would have to return to pay you back and Zigic, if fit, has a double coming.

Having said that, if you're chasing, gambling on Hoilett makes sense. If don't need to take risks then revert to Plan A above.

No, other than the fact that Anelka and Kalou were both on the bench vs United in midweek. We've predicted both to start vs Wigan but it's educated guesswork.

As I have to defend a lead in my mini league I'll guess it's not worth the risk. Are you making the transfer?

As chelsea and gunners have a DG coming up all transfers in should be from these teams I guess.

I've a LOT of ground to make up. I'm bringing in Torres in the vain hope he comes in.

Out of the 3 forwards he's the shoe-in to play. We all know who's picking that team, Chels aren't going to win the title and Roman wants him on the field.

Intresting. Haven't thought about Torres so much to be honest. Wasn't he rested some gw's back? With that said I think he'll be rested this gw and Drogba playing as he was subbed against ManU.

            It's a gamble gameweek!

No idea if he'll play but if he does I think he'll bag a few. I've gambled on him and I'm even considering giving him the armband.

Think the fact that he was subbed after 60-something minutes on Wednesday might indicate he'll be playing, but I'm not confident at all since he was their best player against utd and surely will be needed in his best shape on Tues.

Unless you've a chance of winning the FPL or care about your overall standing, go with the tactics that win your mini-league. Go with Lampard - your rival will hate you for it.

If you're going to double on attacking players from one team - it's Arsenal for me. They share the goals and have more potential to explode as a team than any other. Particularly when they remain vulnerable at the back - Wenger knows he can't sit on a lead.

            Sound advice Mark
Any move for a Rooney replacement I make involves doubling up ie Tevez/Silver Hernandez/Nani Bent/Young
So looks like RVP and Arsh is my best bet.
