Fernando Torres continues his Sutton-esque form for Chelsea as the Londoners are sent packing in the all-English quarter final. Carlo Ancelotti tries that old 4-3-2-1 favourite but finds his Christmas tree-shaped plans are out of season. Man United continue their push for the treble by recording their seventh straight win in all competitions, as Ryan Giggs provides the creative spark to propel Fergie’s side into the last four. Here’s the notes from last night’s Champions League heavyweight showdown…

The Other Brazilian Centre-Back
Since signing on the dotted line at Stamford Bridge back in January, David Luiz has caught the eye of Fantasy Managers far and wide with goals, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points, clean sheets and the added guarantee of being ineligible for European competitions. Now Chelsea are out of Europe and their squad is burgeoning just that little bit more – particularly at the back. Having been injured since late November, Alex returned to the starting line-up against United and while he neither shone or prove a liability last night, his return adds the further chance of rotation to the Blues back-four.

With Chelsea having just seven Premier League games remaining this season and four registered centre-backs (Luiz, Alex, Ivanovic and Terry) as well as three viable right-backs (Bosingwa, Ivanovic and Ferreira) is anyone besides Ashley Cole now safe from rotation?

Ramires Shows His Hand
Another Brazilian decided to play to type yesterday evening when Ramires (the bookies favourites for a yellow card pre-game) decided to go the whole hog and pick up not one but a matching pair of yellows. Chelsea were resultantly left with an even greater uphill task, having only 10 men for the final 20 minutes of the match. Anyone looking for a wild gamble on Ramires ahead of Chelsea’s double header can be assured that his suspension does not cross over to the Premier League. Ancelotti however, may well be questioning Ramires’ big game temperament given his double booking last night.

693 Minutes and Counting…
As this site rather happily points out, Fernando Torres still hasn’t been able to notch his first goal for Chelsea. Being substituted at half-time for Didier Drogba will likely only dent the Spaniard’s confidence and pretty much sums up his display in the first forty-five. Given that he has a weighty Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price-tag of 11.5, even ahead of a promising double-gameweek, there looks to be better options elsewhere.

Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree
Carlo Ancelotti did at least appear to try and work to Torres’ strengths with last night’s formation. As pointed out by The Guardian’s own Sir Paulos, Jonathan Wilson, just 24 hours ago, the 4-4-2 of late doesn’t help El Nino’s cause. By reverting to a 4-3-2-1 christmas tree formation, one that he used reliably at AC Milan, the man in charge appears to have acknowledged that Torres requires improved service. The change failed to help matters, as neither Nicolas Anelka nor Frank Lampard offered the creative bridge between the midfield and strikeforce required to feed Torres on the night.

Frank Lampard: Anonymous and Expensive
Chelsea’s Mr. Reliable didn’t have a bad game, but he certainly didn’t have a good one either – but we can confirm he was on the pitch. The average position of the 20 goal a season man perhaps provides solace in the fact he was given a greater influence further up the field than in recent weeks, but apart from Chelsea’s only shot on target of the first-half, his contributions weren’t significant when assessing Chelsea’s display.

Drogba Puts His Case Forward
The Ivorian striker is by no means on fire right now, but, then again, few are in the Chelsea squad at present. Drogba’s half-time introduction certainly reinvigorated the Chelsea attack and his direct approach ultimately brought reward, even if the satisfaction of his equaliser diminished quickly. Drogba might not be Chelsea’s most in-form striker right now -that honour is reserved for Danny Sturridge on loan at Bolton- but with 2 goals in his last 3 games he’s certainly worthy of consideration over Torres.

Berbatov Benched Again
A goal in Saturday’s home win over Fulham was not enough to maintain his place in the United starting line-up, as Dimitar Berbatov returned to bench-warming duties again last night. Having served one game of his two-match domestic ban, Wayne Rooney returned to the first XI, as did Javier Hernandez, with Fergie reverting back to 4-4-2, following the weekend 4-3-3. Little Pea continued his fantastic debut season with a crucial opener on the verge of half-time, further making a mockery of the minimal £6m United paid for his services last summer.

Valencia Gets a Rest and Some Praise From the Boss
With United still in the hunt for a possible treble, rotation will surely continue to be an issue over the next few weeks. Having just returned from long-term injury, Antonio Valencia has been in fantastic form of late but perhaps with the club’s packed schedule in mind, the right winger found himself joining Berbatov on the bench last night. The United boss found time to praise Valencia prior to the match:

“We expected Antonio to come back like this. He is an outstanding footballer, who is very capable of being a threat. His understanding of the game is terrific. He has a great tactical brain. The boy has everything, balance, power and speed. When we got nearer the time, we couldn’t get him back quickly enough. We arranged closed-doors games to get his tempo and rhythm back.”

Ji Sung-Park started instead on the right and vindicated his selection with a busy performance and the goal that effectively killed off Chelsea’s hopes of a revival, literally seconds after Drogba had given the ten-man visitors a lifeline.

Giggs Tore Them Apart, Again
Playing in central midfield, Ryan Giggs showed real class with two sublime assists that cut through the dogged Chelsea resistance. The Welshman has now assisted United’s last four goals in the competition and, with such a vital contribution on this European run, no one would blame Fergie if he was rested for this upcoming weekend for United’s trip to Wembley and preserved purely for the semi-final, which will surely be against Schalke.

United Defence
John O’Shea got the nod over Wes Brown at right-back, with Rafael not 100% ready for selection. Rio Ferdinand started alongside Nemanja Vidic and within ten minutes it seemed like the ex-England captain would have to depart the proceedings, but the injury worry subsided and Ferdinand saw the 90 minutes out without any further complications. The Drogba goal was only the third United have conceded in the Champions League all season, in a run that has saw them chalk up seven clean sheets along the way.

Fergie Delighted with Form
There was no hiding his pride after the 3-1 aggregate win saw United reach the semi-finals yet again under Sir Alex Ferguson. With the afore-mentioned treble still very much on the cards, the United boss beamed post-match:

“I think we’ve hit our form. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. It’s a great moment for us and I think the players are enjoying it. They’re relishing the challenges they’ve got now. I think you saw that tonight…Momentum is a great thing. The bonus I’ve got is that all my players are getting fit again now and that’s a great boost for us.”

With Man City still licking their wounds from Monday night’s Anfield hammering and more than likely to be without the talents of Carlos Tevez, Fergie will be looking forward to this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final against the “noisy neighbours” with a certain wicked relish.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Appreciate a bit of advise on my team...

    Foster Al-Habsi
    Vidic Coleman Luiz Walker Kelly
    Nani Fabregas Adam VDV Barton
    RVP Odemwingie Tevez

Thinking about what changes to make, willing to take a point hit too as my main rival has taken an 8 point hit.

    1) Barton and Tevez to Lampard and Hoilett

Its likely that Hoilett will be a sub for the next two gameweeks because I would play the other 7 over him and will probs change Odemwingie to someone like Zamora in Gameweek 34....Or

    2) Coleman, Barton and Tevez to Djourou, Lampard and Sturridge

    OR

    3) Vidic, Barton and Tevez to Djourou, Lampard and (Carroll or Zamora)??

    OR

    4) Tevez to Drogba??

I think we could do with a "To Frank or Not to Frank" article ahead of this GW... anyone who doesn't have him [including me] is facing a season-defining decision on Saturday am.

On the one hand, if you don't have him, he is very capable of scoring ~15/20+ points across his two GW33 games, form or no form, and if you don't have him as captain that's going to be hard to make up with only 5 GWs remaining afterwards. And on the other hand he is not playing well at all recently, very expensive and will require at least a 4pt for most teams to get him in.

Personally I don't think I'll have the nerve not to get him in and will captain him for GW33. I've held off getting him in for the Man City, Stoke and Wigan games, and it has worked out well, but realistically how long can this drought go on for?

Lamps is the big decision this gameweek but it could be worse. You could have got him last GW and captained him like a few of us including myself :S

I've made my bed though so I'm gonna lie in it. I'm gonna captain him again this gameweek.... I thinK!

I have him...and at the moment he is a surprise diferntial in my mini league. If any of my rivals want him they have to take a pts hit.

My arguement for having him have been well covered:history, penalties, tendancy to get jammy chances around the box.

But I think that if you have Drogba or Malouda you are well covered in terms of Chelsea attack. Both will probably score more than Frank.

It is a risk not having him but not a seaason defining one. I'm not captaining him though. That honour is for RVP.

i almost made the same mistake last week of cpt lamps over RVP. i had a last minute change of heart on sat morn and made RVP capt. this week is a lil different because there are so many factors to consider. who has an easier fixture list: lamps, who is in better form: RVP. who will play both games: Lamps...who could easily pull up injured: RVP.

all the signs are suggesting lamps is the obvious choice but hes form tbh has been pretty poor in comparison to his usual high standards!

for me i think im swaying towards lamps.....purely becuase my closest rivals have about 5-6 players out where as i have a full team (after taking an 8 point hit).

if lamps fails me Hopefully my other players can pull their weight!

If Malouda wasn't under threat of rotation he would definitely be an easier way to cover potential Chelski attacking returns. But he could end up only playing ~30 mins in 1 game with Drog/Anelka/Torres/Kalou also vying for places?

Its times like this a crystal ball would come in very handy!

I expect Rio to be protected so he can play the FA cup, Champions League and the Arsenal and Chelsea games in the league.

But given how he was hobbling for the majority of the game last night I don't know if he'll be fit for the City game at the weekend.

I'm thinking, this is dangerous but I might get rid of Nani....

Rotation factor, some tough fixtures, he will obviously have the odd game where he will score big but I would guess their will be at least 2 or 3 games now till the end where he won't start or will come on for a cameo, I think it might be worth the risk. Thoughts?

Need to improve my defence a) because it sucks and I'm chasing a big lead, b) because injuries & blank GWs have wrecked it.

    Current defence:
    Luiz, Huth, Kolarov, Coleman, Djourou

Will probably transfer out Kolarov & Coleman. Who to get in?

Is Johnson worth getting in even though Foster is my keeper? I'm a tiny bit wary of doubling up on Brum when they'll probably concecde, but can be convinced.

As for doubling on Chelsea, I'm tight on money, so could only do that if I took a 4pt hit to downgrade someone like Meireles. Worth the hit?

          WBA A
          Chelsea H
plus he's semi-injured and a big roatation risk. If you want a hit, then go Chelsea def and ditch Meireles, or if you dont want a hit go R Johnson, nut they have 4 away games in final 6

Advice on how to improve this team? About 30 points behind in mini-league so next week or two is crucial.

    Foster, Gordon
    Luiz, Huth, Rafael, Coleman, Walker
    Fab, Nani, Barton, Downing, Ferguson
    Rooney, RVP, Welbeck

    Was thinking
Rafael to Terry/Ivanovic for extra Chelsea cover at the back. Is there rotation risk with Chel, surely Ivanovic will be RB
    and Barton to Adam?

He's getting a lot of stick, most of it is unfair. Chelsea not playing with any fluency or creativity. It's been like that since November, but all of a sudden it is all Torres fault. He's actually creating chances for him? Nobody. I think after he gets the summer off, he'll bang in the goals next season.

Rafa benitez, for all his shortcomings, knew how to get the most out of el nino. Look at his time for atletico, spain, liverpool under woy & now chelsea and he's been a shadow of the player rafa had banging em in for fun. If Chelsea are to see the best of him next season then drogba and anelka need to go and they need to get a real good creative centre mid imo. 1 up top and build the rest around him with sturridge his deputy.
