Spurs went into last night’s game at the Lane intent on at least taking the game to Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter final, but there was never any real likelihood of Jose Mourinho’s side letting slip a four goal lead. The leap in class ultimately proved a step too far for a home side that had previously excelled in the group stages. Here’s the notes from last night’s events…

Goals Dry Up for Spurs
With an average of three goals per game, Harry Redknapp’s side were top scorers in the group stages but they have been found wanting in the last sixteen. Over the four matches against Milan and Real Madrid, Spurs found the net just once, though Madrid were always going to be a tough nut to crack; last night was their eight clean sheet of the competition. A top-class centre forward is something Spurs have lacked all season; their three forwards have scored just thirteen league goals between them this term.

With a game at home to Barcelona this Saturday, Madrid, in truth, never really extended themselves and were happy to contain a Spurs side that -despite a very attacking midfield line-up- were simply unable to find a way through.

Formation
With Peter Crouch suspended following his sending off in Spain last week, Roman Pavlyuchenko led the line in a 4-4-1-1 formation for the Londoners, with Rafael Van der Vaart in the hole behind.

On the hour mark, Redknapp changed the formation, sending on Jermain Defoe for Aaron Lennon, with Van der Vaart moving out to the right as the team resorted to 4-4-2. Madrid were simply too well-drilled for this move to make any impact and the victory saw Mourinho became the first coach to take four different teams into the Champions League Semi Finals.

Heurelho’s Howler
The Spurs keeper was guilty of yet another basic error last night, allowing a speculative long-range effort from Cristiano Ronaldo to somehow slip through his hands and find its way into the back of the net. Coming just five minutes into the second half, this killed off the slim hopes of a home crowd that done everything they could to be that vital “twelfth man” for Harry’s boys.

Barring a couple of dubious penalty shouts, there was not much for the Spurs supporters to celebrate, but their show of support was a fine acknowledgement of a European campaign that now leaves Man United the last English club left in this season’s competition.

Huddlestone Continues Comeback
Last weekend’s home win over Stoke saw Tom Huddlestone return to the Tottenham fold for the first time since gameweek 12 and the midfielder grabbed an assist in the 3-2 victory. Huddlestone was given another start last night, joining Luka Modric in the centre of midfield and lasted 70 minutes before being replaced by Sandro.

Harry Wants More
With his first taste of Champions League football ending in the last eight, Harry Redknapp is already desperate to do it all again next season. The Spurs boss said after the game:

“It is no good doing it once and then not doing it again, we have to improve and be there next year too. You’ve seen the players we have to play at that level and we just need to tweak that squad so we can do it again. Much like Arsenal do, and Chelsea and Manchester United, that’s how they keep doing it. We have to finish above Man City and above Chelsea in the league, that is our aim – it is not going to be easy but that is what we want.”

A look at Spurs run in (ARS, WBA, che, BLP & mcy, liv, BIR) shows exactly what he means by “not easy”, with a North London derby and visits to three of the top six still to come before the end of the season.

Yep on a whole I would say it's definitely worth it, although two freebies next week does looks tempting! Sorry that probaly isn't much help too you..., I suppose you could always take a few points hits next week if you weren't happy with your team, I find it's always easier to justify point hits in a DGW.

Although a lot of people will look at Carrol's fixture, Arsenal away, and think it's not that great for him, but if Djouro doesn't play I've got a feeling Carrol could cause major havoc, remember Newcastle earlier in the season.

It's tempting to bring him in and possibly even captain him, but with so many doubles next week to look at (is Liverpool one, haven't checked?) then perhaps theres better options out there.

Also Liverpool are away, and they are shocking away from home at the moment...

Arsenal look weak at the back, can easily see them leaking 2 goals... especially with an aerial threat like Carrol getting at them... I want to bring him in for Zigic. But I've kept ziggy so long now I can't take him out just before his double unless I know he's not going to play...

How can I best bring in Lampard with 2 free transfers this week and 1.6 in the bank. I reckon

    1. A Young to Lampard
    2. Nasri to Wilshere

    Foster (Freidel)
    Luiz, Distin, Bardsley (Hughes, Djourou)
A Young, Nani, Larsson, Adam, Nasri
    RVP, Torres (Zigic)

I really don't think a double gameweek is the time to lose faith in Torres, it makes no sense really but the longer this drought goes on, the more likely he is to score in my mind, and it will be a 2 goal, 3 BP affair too, because the BP Judges will not be able to help themselves.

    Just considering some options:

    A. Nani & Berbs out for Walcott & Drogba

    or

    B. Evra & Berbs out for Djou & Drogba

    or

    C. Evra out for Terry

Get Berbs out for sure, he will play against City and probably be benched against the Castle, so I think A is a winner. Been contemplating Nani out myself and I personally think he has a pretty high chance of being benched or rested against Newcastle, he will play this weekend in the Semi Final, of that I have no doubt, we need him.

That being said, Fergie's team selections have been notoriously hard to predict this season and Nani could very well play against Newcastle. The away factor is paramount to any decision to take Nani OUT this week in particular however, he always tears it up at home and is less likely (statistically) to do the same away, it is the stage of the season where one cannot afford expensive players on the bench, so its certainly a balls to the wall decision, I am leading all my mini-leagues, if I wasn't, Nani would be out in a heartbeat, less to lose.

      A.

Thanks chaps - nice replies. I'm leading mini-leagues, but really want to push on for overall rank. I think Drogs and Walcott in particular could be useful differntials. Plus, having 12-odd million up front means Rooney or Tevez can get moved in easier later on.

Alot of potentially ballsy decisions to be made this week, and most people, me included, are looking for advice on one of Nasri(unlikely)/VDV(probably) and Young (possibly) OUT of their sides.

I had a look at the OPTA stats for the last 6 games last night and when looking for a Chelsea midfielder realised that Malouda and Lampard are neck and neck for attempts on goal, and attempts on goal on target. Similarly, they are pretty close on through balls too from what I recall. This has changed my thinking on the necessity to get Lampard in, yes, he takes free kicks, badly. Yes, he is on penalties, and of course this makes him more attractive for that reason, BUT, the fear factor with Lampard is that he has had major "bumper" weeks in the past, the one where he scored 4(5?) springs to mind, and I think this is tempering judgement on here a little too much.

I don't think there could be any argument that if Drogba was guaranteed of two starts, then he would be a better attacking prospect than Lampard, let's leave Torres and Anelka out of this head to head, Torres will get off the mark sooner rather than later, and of course, these fixtures are perfect for that (but so have many others), so, where Drogba is not guaranteed starts we have to look to the midfield. Malouda has seen a drop in form and as a result is down the pecking order in fantasy manager's minds.

A straight comparison between Malouda and Lampard over the past 6 weeks reveals the following:

    Malouda - 16 attempts on goal - 8 on target - Malouda 1 goal

    Lampard - 15 attempts on goal - 8 on target - Lampard 3 goals

So pretty close, but Lampard has been more efficient with his conversion to goal ratio. Lampard has not scored a penalty in the League this season, he has missed one, and has not had as many generously handed to him as last season (10, right?).

Basically, both Malouda and Lampard have created the same amount of chances, Lampard has pens, but, at 9.4 and 13 respectively, is this the premium you pay for penalties? I am still not sure myself to be honest, but, the more I think about it, and having watched Cesc's masterclass (against Blackpool fine) at the weekend, I think I will be getting Cesc, 10 through balls to Lampard's 2 at the weekend, and Nasri/RVP scuffed so many we could all be debating Cesc in now as opposed to this Lampard dilemma.

I think that he will start one and come on in another, and therin lies the rub I suppose, Benayoun back gives Ancelotti some options, and if anyone is going to help Torres break his duck it will be an ex-Liverpool fan.

I suppose my point is that I don't want to get Lampard in purely because he will start the two games, that still means 4-6 points if he doesn't score, and there is a 3.6m difference between him and Malouda, as I said in the post, I just don't know!

I feel a little nervous with my inclusion of Anelka last week. Will he get the minutes? Will he create or get goals? Will he be able to get in a near fit Chelsea team?

Chasing the leader down in my mini-league and had to think of differentials but a transfer would be near pointless with a 4 point hit when no Chelsea forward is assured of the minutes!?

Maybe, just maybe, could be one of the worst transfers of the season for myself though did get Zigic for the last DGW and gratefully still have him...

I just remember watching him v man city and stoke recently and he wasn't playing anywhere near his his early season/last season form. Quite gash actually tbh. But as your stats show because he plays for chelsea he'll get plenty of chances especially against weaker teams.

Just because I think it's not worth getting rid of Nani(yet) and you won't take any hits.

You can get VDV back later for his double or maybe Bale/Modric. Still a while to go to Gw 36.

    B) Coleman & VDV -> Terry & Adam (no hit)

    Nice article.

"A look at Spurs run in (ARS, WBA, che, BLP & mcy, liv, BIR) shows exactly what he means by “not easy”, with a North London derby and visits to three of the top six still to come before the end of the season."

I see your hovering in the top 10k, where u hoping to finish? The moves below look good, I'd maybe get rid of Young over VDV but it's tough call. Opnions on my options above?

I'm trying desperately to get in the top 1K, still not managed it thanks to a couple of stupid decisions, Rooney transfered out for his hatrick and Carroll on the bench instead of Adam which I was originally gonna do the opposite!

I just did Tevez to Carroll (prob should of done it this morning as I think one went up and the other down today).

And have same dilemma Nasri (rotation risk), Nani (rotation risk), or VDV (form) to Lampard.... I'm keeping Young for the upcoming fixtures.

So Tevez likely to be out for City's nice fixtures of Blackburn and West Ham, I guess Carroll or Suarez it is!
